12:02 AM
XP is 600MB, 10 is 4.4GB
yeesh
what a difference 16 years make

Yeah, but which one was better? ;)

7 was the best IMHO.
I still have it on my laptop.
Won't upgrade it until I have to.

I was asking between XP and 10.

DEE DEE DEE DEE DEE DEE
@Terrance 7

12:06 AM
7 wasn't an option. :P

SEVEN
SEVEN IS ALWAYS AN OPTION

OK, change the rules then. ;)

I did
forgot about the damn popup bubbles in XP
FWOP

My Experiences with Windows through the years since I have been a technician:
Win 3.0 = meh
Win 3.1x = Better
Win 95 = OK for beginning
Win 98 = Better than 95
Win Me = Garbage
Win XP = Decent Workhorse
Win Vista = Better than Me
Win 8 = UGH!
Win 8.1 = Kind of better than Win 8
Win 10 = Verdict is still pending

@Terrance Wait, where's 7?

12:15 AM
Oops
LOL

;D

Dang it, can't edit my list. Grrrrrr!!!

Win 3.1x = Better
Win 95 = OK for beginning

Win Me = Garbage

Win 7 = Really good, but not perfect
Win 8 = UGH!

what about 2000?
that thing was rock solid

Different type of Windows

wat

12:18 AM
Same line as NT

so is everything past ME
ME, 98, 95, 3.1, 3.0 are all DOS-based
2000, XP, etc are all NT

I switched to Ubuntu when XP died because (the then up-to-date) Win 8 was just unbearable and it would have been at least the same amount of work to switch to it, so why not Unix? Ubuntu really didn't make it hard…

I don't agree with the listing here as NT 3.x, 4.x, 2000, and 2003 were never intended for home users en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT

oh that's what you mean
but you're mixing things up
Windows Server 2000 and Windows 2000 are different things
But anything Windows 2000 on was based on NT

Try to install games on Windows 2000
And have them work successfully

12:23 AM
I don't think there are any games I could download that would work on something from 1999 :p

Try gaming on XP 64 bit.

I didn't even know 64bit XP existed until like 2013

Try to get half the drivers to work with XP 64 bit

but I do see what you mean about 2000
there was never technically a "Home" edition
but it was definitely marketed towards home users
probably after ME flopped

It was marketed towards business systems.

12:26 AM
'twas both
I have an old Dell Latitude that came with 2000
it can actually run 7 pretty well too

Yeah, the US Government had Dell Latitudes back then at had 2000 on them. That line was geared towards Enterprise customers.
That was back when I was doing DCAA (Defense Contract Audit Agency) Support.

Latitude C840?

Maybe. I can't remember the models. But the Latitudes were geared for Business-class and that is why they came with 2000. dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-laptops-and-notebooks/sc/laptops/…

> "Blazing bus speeds, Double Data Rate memory, and Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 processors-M are now available on a mobile platform."
It's funny to read things like that years later.
None of that is amazing anymore.

:D

12:31 AM
> "Equipped with high resolution 15" TFT displays at SXGA+ (1400x1050), UXGA, or Ultra Sharp TM (1600x1200) and nVidia's latest GeForce4 440 Go graphics controller with 32 or 64MB DDR video memory, the C840 delivers blazing graphics performance."
1400x1050 is not "high resolution", lol.
64MB of video memory is... enough to run Monopoly, maybe :P
802.11b - such fancy. much modern. so speed.

it could come with 1600x1200
but come on

Ew, 4:3.

for 2002
that thing was amazing

I'm sure it was at the time.

@NathanOsman same as 1400/1050

12:35 AM
Well, sitting on my desk here is a Latitude E7470, so they are still geared towards business, but Microsoft killed the business line of OS around the time of XP.

@TheWanderer There was an option to add a Zip 250 drive :P
Remember Zip disks?

oye
those were fun

Nice!! I still have a fully working Zip 100 IDE at home. Yay!!! :P

the C840 I had just had two battery packs in the bottom slots
I really like the modular idea of that laptop
can't we have that today?

Yeah, Dell was good at modulating the parts on the laptops.

12:37 AM
True.

I did get my Latitude cert when I was doing the DCAA contract, but that is now long since expired. Dell is very picky about their certifications.
They were almost as bad as when I had my Apple Certifications. But I won't go into that. :P

12:59 AM
Out for a while. Have fun y'all! :)

Hi, how could I know who maintains tasksel?
Please tag

7:47 AM
$ apt show tasksel
Package: tasksel
Version: 3.34ubuntu3
Priority: optional
Section: admin
Origin: Ubuntu
Maintainer: Ubuntu Installer Team <ubuntu-installer@lists.ubuntu.com>
Original-Maintainer: Debian Install System Team <debian-boot@lists.debian.org>
Bugs: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+filebug
[...]
@pntshere Just check the package information --^ If you want to report a bug though, best do that on Launchpad.

8:27 AM
Thanks @ByteCommander I meant I want to know who is the woman/man who maintains it to suggest a small feature, though). Must I become a Debian maintainer to know who these are?

Q: Monitoring CPU and temperature

Zeno RaiserI'm looking for some interfaces to monitor the use of the CPU and the temperature, i have already installed lm-sensors for temp and htop for CPU but i want something that shows them always in real-time in the bar at the top of the screen (the one which says time, battery% ecc.. sorry i don't know...

8:49 AM
@pntshere Doesn't seem to be a single person, as the Maintainer and Original-Maintainer fields above suggest. Anyway, feature requests also can go to Launchpad.

9:32 AM
Okay, that's good, I'll write to them. Thanks!

"A tsunami warning is in effect for coastal British Columbia and parts of Alaska..." http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/alaska-earthquake-tsunami-1.4499558
I'm nowhere near sea level but that's kinda scary.

10:37 AM
Buoy 46410 just northeast of the epicenter has recorded a water displacement of 10 meters (32 feet). #Tsunami
:O
Yikes.

Oops. I'm glad I don't have to watch that from the first row...

@pntshere you need to ask in on the launchpad page for tasksel; and it is not 1 person.

Q: How can I apply a background to a subset of monitors?

KholbyMy current setup is 3 monitors, 1920x1080 each, and I use feh to apply a 5760x1080 image across all 3. What I would like to do is add a fourth monitor (actually a TV) at either 1080x1920 (rotated) or 1920x1080, but I only want to apply the 5760x1080 background to the original 3. As a bonus, it ...

To improve responsiveness, is it usually advised to increase or decrease the virtual memory dirty ratio?

11:37 PM
@NathanOsman Not all printers. Color printers are usually somewhere in between good and evil, it's difficult to determine. But with monochrome printers it's a black and white issue.
