First one was not .gconfd Look at it carefully.
I alex@griever:~$ mv .gconfd .gconfd.backup
mv: cannot stat `.gconfd': No such file or directory
So you lost it somewhere.
Let's just move the data to another account. Should be easier to check for problems.
so move everything that's not .foldername?
Yeah.
All the not hidden files and folders.
Not even fonts?
gotta have my fonts man
jrg
jrg
12:04
.fonts dir can probably be safely moved.
Have your fonts then.
ok - where is the other account folder located?
and how will I get my programs back?
all the ubuntu-restricted drivers
all of that stuff
The program is installed /usr/ don't worry about that.
What was that command to add a new user?
I have the new user made
I just need to know where the folder is located
it is in /home/newuser/
12:08
@jokerdino I know how to cp from dir to dir within home, but how do I do so outside of home?
cp ~ /home/newuser/
eg: cp folder1 folder2 newuserfolder
ok
@Mahesh If you did it right, you should have the analytical badge by now.
@ravi I see that you have lost some rep. Your meta account has more rep than the main.
@jokerdino how would I do multiple folders?
@AlexPoulos we just did.
12:12
@jokerdino the ./folder 's werent copied?
IIRC, no
@jokerdino also how do I get all my programs, ppa settings and third party ppas back?
It is already installed in the system. None of the apps is lost.
But you might lose some of your settings. But not programs.
ppa settings?
No, program settings.
12:15
so say my regular dir is ~ /home/alex/ and I chose to cp that over to the other folder - will that just copy what's visible or also the hidden folders as well?
I believe it is just the normal folders.
If it is not, we might create another user and fix that mess. :P
thats not very reassuring Joker..
:)
lol
I have another 10 minutes to spend. Better hurry up.
12:16
should I just make a bash script and select the specific folders?
You haven't copied yet?
@jokerdino I appreciate your patience... but no, I want to know all about my situation so I can be prepared for the reprocussions
sigh
Just copy by GUI then.
Go to home. Ctrl + A all the folders. (make sure only non-hidden folders and files)
Click on filesystem on the side bar.
@jokerdino no, I'll go out on a limb, Ill copy from my current main user then if it copies the hidden folders too, I'll go through and trash them
from cli
I don't think it works that way.
12:19
...
An user account has to have those for functionality.
If you delete them, then KABOOM.
6 more minutes.
nothing is easy in ubuntu is it...?
Those comments are not necessary.
@jokerdino it was a joke
I don't have time.
12:21
ok
I did an ls
all it shows are the regular folders
in the first user folder
Yes, it should do that.
so I take it that means that it will only copy those then
correct?
Same level of uncertainty here.
Let's be optimistic and hope so.
here goes nothing
3 more minutes and I won't be here anymore.
12:23
alex@griever:~$ cp ~ /home/alex ~ /home/newusers/
cp: omitting directory `/home/alex'
did I do something wrong?
Yes you did.
cp ~ /home/newusers/
that's all you need to do.
it probably omitted it.
new users is the folder TO im copying
you should be good to go then.
Im copying FROM /alex/
~ means /home/alex
12:24
deja vu..
last minute. hah
good luck.
wait
hold on
how do I copy TO someplace?
it keeps ommitting
What does it say?
alex@griever:~$ cp ~ /home/alex ~ /home/newusers
cp: omitting directory `/home/alex'
Why are you doing cp ~ /home/alex ~ /home/newusers ?
12:26
...
that's the new users folder
the new user
Just do cp ~ /home/newusers/
or if you are adamant: cp /home/alex /home/newusers/
cp: omitting directory `/home/alex'
same thing
exact command you did?
Doubt it.
12:28
cp: omitting directory `/home/alex'
alex@griever:~$ cp /home/alex /home/newusers/
cp: omitting directory `/home/alex'
I did just as you said
we are out of luck.
And i am leaving.
Sorry but tough luck.
12:43
hey as far as i know, cp copies all folders n files.. including hidden ones
@jokerdino nope.. still waiting for my badge to appear..
13:09
and hey perhaps a day or two ago, someone posted an image here saying he needed a url to post it in his question.
Now my question:
How do you post an image here without it already being on web?
jrg
jrg
Upload... > Browse > File > Open > Upload > done
@DavidOneill This is what i was mentioning.. Found it at last! Hurrayyyyyyy!!!
@jrg wait a sec.. where'z this upload button?
jrg
jrg
@Mahesh Oh, you don't have enough rep yet. :\
you have to have 100 reputation to upload pictures.
kk thanks fr d info.. :)
hey why cant we gift rep? :P lol
13:26
Here you go @Mahesh... ;)
Hi all
Hie!! and @Takkat have we met before?
No we haven't :)
jrg
jrg
Nobody meets @Takkat. He simply is.
lol
I was traveling a lot the last days.
Before that I was too busy at work to chat.
hmm.. and @jrg stumbled across ur blahg...
jrg
jrg
13:31
Oh, my blargh. :D

jrg
jrg
@Mahesh heh. ;)
Virtual clash of brains...
yep.. watever u wish to call it..
jrg
jrg
@Takkat So you're still on your visiting streak, or did you have to break it?
13:31
ahem ahem.. i didn't get that @Takkat
I am glad I'm back at home now.
lol - look how simple an answers can be to get accepted: askubuntu.com/a/121602/3940
@aking1012 i enjoyed reading it. hi5
o/ Takkat

13:35
i know the feeling ;)
All and everybody seems to be pushing and dragging me away from that keyboard.
Sometimes ya just have to unplug

ciao
and @jrg donno y allof a sudden crossed the 100 .. :P
and now i see the upload button as well.. lol
Can't unplug my work :"( There is no wire attached.

@lazyPower cya
13:38
cu @lazyPower
Is creating a community wiki answer with summary of all posted tiny answers welcome?
and should i ask this in meta?
never mind.. asked it in meta.
http://meta.askubuntu.com/q/2945/45659
opinions go there, to keep things organized.. :)
13:54
@Mahesh I believe a super-answer is always welcome. I wonder if we really need CW for that.
what if i get downvotes for just copy pasting?? O.o
and people may think i'm trying to farm rep..
so just in case...
That's called taking one for the team :-)
@Mahesh as long as you get more up- than down... ;p
Well, CW is on the safe side then.
13:56
So... you trying to farm rep?
for now i'll go ahead and make a cw answer
I've seen a lot c&P going on here.
hmm.. i wont say no.. i need rep, but no, i gain rep only by the better practices..
I'm just joking, Mahesh
a bunch of repwhores exploiting a pair of loopholes and wwhoof! the site will no more be usable, right?
13:59
sorry, I was afk a sec otherwise I'd have said that sooner
Best for the site is a really good answer. Rep is less important than that.
:) yup..
That's what a repwhore would say though :-/
They would say anything yep.
Is it just me, or does anyone else have a love-hate thing with Ubuntu?
14:00
@ChanHoSuh hey no offence taken..
@ChanHoSuh ><
i do.. :)
i love ubuntu.. donno y..
Hey this chat interface is kind of slick...
that's the kind of thing I love about ubuntu... the community and all that
but then there's that Unity thing
and i hate it coz i spend all my time here..
and the way they randomly change things around
@Mahesh not healthy! :)
get out a bit... take your laptop OUTSIDE
lol.... i do wen i have classes.. :P
remember the signal can still reach far! :-D
14:03
i'm on a lan in ma room, but wen at class, yup the wifi reaches far.. :D
hm...I don't like the sound of that actually
too many people on laptops in the lecture hall now
(am i suppossed to reply??)
:P
nah I'm just an old man
mumbling to himself
hm, I'm such an old man, my thought is now... how do I get this chat thing to appear in my terminal instead of this slick interface?
too bad elinks doesn't support js
I think that's a feature, not a flaw, according to some :-p
I saw an interview with inventor of javascript... he invented it in X days... guess what X is
don't cheat
14:08
the thing that serves gui i guess..
haha, lol, good one.... -_-;
10 days!
10 days to?
he invented javascript in 10 days
thats.... fast
was it developed independently?
yeah... I still can't believe it
and he did a good job too...
14:11
or from java as i always imagined?
actually, only reason java is in the name is kind of marketing
they told him they wanted a little java
but basically java for dummies who couldn't program
in the end, it had nothing to do with java
hi tachyons
hmm.. but the syntax is mostly similar, right?
thatss what got me thinking..
Thanks fr d knowledge.. :)
whats the topic?
14:13
and ya, hi @tachyons
scroll up and u'll find were talking about javascript..
hm, only very very vaguely
javascript is more like c, I guess
if you look at java versus javascript, it's obvious the difference
when you look at javascript and c you see ugly garbage, so similar :-/
its been a year since i last touched js.. cant comment more..
hehe, I'm just teasing
I'm not a c guy
ugly garbage?? js is much cleaner than c...
that's not saying much though
14:16
:P lol
btw did you work on a terminal anytime?
stackoverflow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
I don't know javascrip though... probably should learn sometime
or were they already dead by the time u started working?
14:17
lol
you asking me?
@tachyons ???
yup.. i'm asking u.. :D
haha you asking tachyons if s/he worked on physical terminal?
nope.. i'm asking you !@ChanHoSuh
me?? hahaa, like shared terminal like in early days of BSD??
I'm not that old!
I grew up with Commodore 64
lol...
14:19
what's so funny? :)
actually I had 128
btw did anyone preserve terminals? atleast in a museum?
Commodore 128D
it was like the big bro to the 64
sure
my lol was to 'I'm not that old!'
thought for a moment.. i missed a pic.. :P
I missed out on original Nintendo though.. parents wouldn't get it for me
I had to always play on friends... and you know what? You can never be as good unless you have your own... so sad :'-(
you're too young for Nintendo huh?
now it's all 3D
i was afk for a while..
14:23
alright, @Mahesh, nice chatting with you
probably time to go...
maybe I'll see you some other time... I better get some shut-eye
shut eye? umean sleep??
lol
yeah
14:24
try to get some sun
k good night @ChanHoSuh :)
if that's possible wher eyou are :-)
good night :-p
i need to go have my dinner..
I hear birds chirping though... so not really "night"
lol
i wish goodnight at 11 am at times.. so no probs.. atleast for me.. :P

Dang, people are having boot problems left and right. Something in Oneiric broke, and it hit the fan.
@jokerdino Did you have your inbox explode with Matthias' uploads to precise?!
15:04
Jeez
Ask him to take a break, man. It is only Saturday.
That was a quick trip across the city and back. :)
And where is our little trouble maker?
@Mahesh In that case, you did it wrong. I got the badge in [meta.SO] after you.
Hi @Gigili Long time no see.
Hi @RemusRigo @projectshave
Hi!
What's Stefano doing? I haven't seen him since the mid Feb.
He's quite busy in real life.
Exams?
15:09
Yes, university and such.
ah, tell him i wished all the best for his exams and other stuff that keeps him busy.
He'd say thank you in reply.
@jrg Lucky I have a filter in action for precise-changes. :)
@Gigili He would say you mean?
Is he anywhere near you?
@jokerdino Yeah, what did I say?
Unfortunately not.
ok fine :)
Happy to see you, anyway.
15:13
Thank you, same as here.
What brought you here?
Who? Me?
A weird issue, I'll ask for help in a few minutes.
15:52
Hello all
jrg
jrg
16:05
@jokerdino I'm too lazy for that.
16:19
@MarcoCeppi Are you there?
jrg
jrg
@William whats up?
I need a sysadmin.
Badly.
jrg
jrg
What'd you break this time?
Trying to get a site to work and keep getting a 500 Internal Server Error.
jrg
jrg
whats your logs showing?
16:22
Well, it;s an Elgg install.
Evver heard of Elgg?
It's an open source social networking CMS.
jrg
jrg
oh, i've no clue.
Drat.
Seen Marco recently?
He's the one I should ask.
@AmithKK hello
@ThinkDifferent yeah :o
How is @keepass in here?
Ubuntuaskubuntu.com

Launched Q&A site for ubuntu users and developers

16:37
@jrg He wants mod rewrite enabled
jrg
jrg
loading fine for me.
Is?
Yeha, but it's in CSS hell.
It's not loading any of the CSS right, and you can't login.
17:15
Well hats off to their maintenance. It didn't reset my session.
I envy their knowledge of the platform. Every deployment i push out ends up resetting sessions and clobbering user experience to anyone active on the sites while i implement new features.
@lazyPower Nice Cat
@AmithKK talking about Mr Milo that i posted on G+?
@lazyPower I don't know how they did it, but I would like to know.
@lazyPower Yes
17:19
@aking1012 the only thing i can figure is that the sessions are database stored, in which case it will persist through even application restarts. As the application makes a DB poll for every active session request.
Listening to the incredibox on shuffle mode. this is pure baller.
I found a setup on incredibox that I like
its like, Gorillaz in programmatic format.
Speaking of Gorillaz... its time to have a Gorillaz marathon this weekend.
@lazyPower You followed my link?
17:22
Yessir
17:46
hi @blueXrider
Is there a mod around? If so do you want me to delete the answer here: askubuntu.com/questions/121899/… so it redirects or leave it
Welcome back @GeorgeEdison
@aking1012 it's closed, letitgooooooo
yeah, I know closed as dupe redirects if there aren't any answers though
think i just rubberduckied my answer
jrg
jrg
18:03
@aking1012 nice rubberducking.
@jrg Thanks. Do you still have that link for the clone of spacewalk? I wrote a short-ish blog article on why I think some OSS projects fail and linking to it might be a good idea.
jrg
jrg
18:20
@aking1012 Yeah let me dig it up.
I browsed kickstarter and couldn't find it
got it and linked
ty
I didn't even know that existed
last I checked though there was newer/decent support for debian based systems in spacewalk
@JorgeCastro Cool beans
That does cover pushing packages. I may need to read up on it some more. I think that may go back to my snap-ins note though...so a snap-in could be pushed as a package.
@AmithKK O.o.. the incredibox isn't working.. :(
403 error here
@JorgeCastro thx for the link on meta btw, it's in my bookmarks now
@Mahesh works for me
too lazy to crop, bt u cn see that i guess..
I didn't mean that it wasn't 403 for you, I meant that it's not down for everyone. Possibly a network/filter issue
18:40
hmm.. probably.. bt isn't 403 a server-side prob?
(I've no idea abt it anyway..)
You can generically return 403 if you want to cut off a website/webpage in a filter.
ok.. i didn't know that..
@jokerdino I did it right, and I get it now. I'm behind a proxy. A proxy that caches web pages.. and it probably means I've a very slim chance of earning Analytical badge.. :(
@JorgeCastro Updated the blog article to include a link there btw
19:42
hi co-lurkers!
@jrg @aking1012 askubuntu.com/questions/80178/… was helpful :)
2 +1s
o/ @htorque
@htorque Hi
Ask Ubuntu General Room: Awakening.
almost yawns
19:46
@htorque I like that it's a global community so it's almost always sort of awake
19:56
@Mahesh I just rebooted and got a 403. It seems they won't disconnect you, but if you've left it playing on loop for hours, they'll block your IP at least for a while
@aking1012 yeah, but it can be a pain to communicate with timezones on the other side of the planet. :-)
agreed
