Afternoon @lazyPower
Hello World
2
A: Is it "safe" to try out Firefox 4?

Stefano PalazzoIf you Install Firefox 4, rather than upgrading to it, it's completely safe to try out. You can just download their Linux binary package, extract it and run Firefox from there*. With absolutely no risk to your existing Firefox installation. There are a bunch of methods of testing Firefox 4, for...

Any idea why I got a down-vote on this one
@StefanoPalazzo Not sure
My assertion that it's completely safe is correct though isn't it?
@StefanoPalazzo I've only had one crash with FF4 and that was due to memory limits of my netbook not the browser code.
@StefanoPalazzo so I would say its fairly safe
@MarcoCeppi You're familiar with JQuery correct?
16:30
@lazyPower Sadly, yes
Even if it does crash, it's still perfectly safe regarding the other components
if i pastebin something can you take a peek and tell me why its not working?
Sure
@lazyPower Put it in Gist so you can see my changes (if any)
Oli
Oli
FF4 lags for me. Huge CPU spikes occasionally... And even without spikes, it can be really slow to change/close tabs Probably extension-caused because it was pretty nippy before I reinstalled them but I don't have that many extensions to be fair (firebug+webdeveloper+adblock)
Sending it as a DM on twitter

@MarcoCeppi: Note the ID's have been altered to read ct100_ i'm not sure why but ASP is appending that to all the ID's.
16:33
@Oli maybe somebody misunderstood me, though I was saying that firefox 4 will run perfectly, when I was just saying that it won't be dangerous in any way. In any case, I'll clarify it
@lazyPower Your problem is - I don't think you can capture click functions in the body. Code would have to be in the header
ah, so you cant display that inline?
Oli
Oli
@StefanoPalazzo I'm not commenting about your answer.. I'm just having a moan.
Yeah, you can embed JS in the body - but not when it's capturing click events IIRC
let me do a quick check
16:38
@MarcoCeppi: if thats the case its still not working :/
@lazyPower I'm wrong, you can!
using the hash denotes using ID's, so i have zero idea why this isnt functioning :|
Anything in the Javascript Error console?
what is this?
I just noticed someone voted all the answers and the question down, probably don't need to worry about it then
16:40
@TheX you can set a key to quickly switch layouts
Actually yes... in VS. When i include the official JQuery lib its throwing an error about .localScroll methods. :|
I never change layouts...
what packages are you installing?
I am doing updates
16:42
Is there any harmless selection available? (like None, or a key no never hit?)
Yeah I selected non I think
Don't worry about it then. Go to System → Preferences → Keyboard → Layouts to check if everything is in order
uh oh, i think synaptic died
@lazyPower I didn't get the snippet number
I can't seem to push my changes back up
errr
/me is confused
16:45
what do I do now?
It's an anonymous gist - I didn't realize that you didn't have a Github account
i do i just didnt login
:P
nothing, okay great...
@lazyPower I forked it
I won't paste it here?
i saw, already looking at it
16:46
Nice!
If that dosen't work I have one more idea
DIdnt work, it raised the event on page load
Okay, one more idea
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
what is the fix?
don't run more than one package manager at a time
@lazyPower pushed
16:51
@JorgeCastro I'm not
maybe the update manager is checking for updates?
nope
should jockey-gtk be running?
I figured it out
@MarcoCeppi: i think i've discovered the issue. They are using a trimmed set of JQuery >.>
So instead of giving me the full framework I have a limited set of methods I can use
well wait, fadeout has been in since 1.0, and u'm using 1.3.2.min.js
@MarcoCeppi: yep they are using sizzlejs cssselector. this isnt pure jquery
fml
@MarcoCeppi woo! death to ubuntu-desktop tag!
@JorgeCastro Yeah, Jeff picked up the message in the teacher's room
17:02
@MarcoCeppi: thanks for the code snippet audit anyway :)
@lazyPower No problem, if you need me to look over anything else just put it in a Gist :D
first I tried to set the house on fire, and now I can't get my computer to work
Hurray for ASP Fail! worldcitiesdatabase.com
there is nothing wrong with the .net framework....
except everything....
it makes me want to punch babies
17:13
@lazyPower wow...
I was all about it until I had to develop with it.
let me guess you are never going to have kids
then i got a taste of what its really about
I'm actually dating a girl with two kids...
then she should either take the kids far away and never let you around them... or never let you around computers...
I'm getting interested in ruby. I just havent had time to really investigate it.
bbl lunch time
17:16
I can not install nvidia drivers for the life of me :(
17:53
mmm CHicago Style deep dish pizza om nom nom
@lazyPower are you from Chicago?
Origionally from KC MO, currently living in Pittsburgh PA
oh, you just like Chicago Style Pizza then?
yep
Windy City Pizza is amazing
I have been to chicago a few times... the pizza up there is great
17:57
Indeed it is
One of the Gems of the midwest
we live about 3.5 hours from Chicago, don't go there very often... can't afford it... lol
KC has some good food too though... plus the Negro League Baseball Hall of Fame...
or whatever they call it
i havent been home in a while. Last time I was back i was down south in the Springfield area visiting my parents
Pittsburgh has the Steelers puke
Dont hate because we are on our way to seven ;)
not because "you" are on your way to 7
but because my brother is obsessed with them and will not shut up if they win
18:04
/me smirks
Its a Steeler Nation baby.
he lives in Indiana
Exactly why i say its a steeler nation. Steeler fans are everywhere
ugh...
your last 2 questions are too localized
fine goes and cries in the corner
18:20
@TheX having issues installing nvidia drivers with the restricted driver manager?
@lazyPower no i fixed that... now it is chrome
ah ok
chrome is crazy!
18:33
Chrome pwnz your socks
18:49
Hi.
Anyone there?
Hi, yes @AviralDasgupta we are here
After upgrading to a new Linux kernel version
@MarcoCeppi I have new entries in my grub boot screen (for the new versions and the old ones)
is it safe to remove the old kernel headers, files, etc. via synaptic/aptitude?
@AviralDasgupta Yes it is. Typically they recommend you leave at least one other kernel version - but that's up to you.
I would simply run sudo apt-get autoremove it should be picked up in there
@MarcoCeppi nmm... nothing there
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
In that case, yes you can remove by just sudo apt-get remove and the exact linux kernel
18:54
Sure :)
Thanks
What version of Ubuntu are you using?
10.10
@MarcoCeppi ?
That's fine - I was just curious :)
Oh
Anyway, it's on a netbook, so I'm trying to:
1. Fix up those extra entries (which you helped me with)
if you remove the packages it'll autofix the entries
I remove everyone except like the last 2 newest ones
19:01
2. Reduce boot time (mucking about with ureadahead and bootchart), will post results later
(I mean isn't Ubuntu supposed to take substantially less time than Windows to boot up?)
@AviralDasgupta Good luck!
@JorgeCastro Yeah, that's what we ended up doing
3. (I need some help with this)
Some of your questions you might want to place on the main site so all can benefit from it.
The netbook in question is a Lenovo S10-3S
Typically people will ask the question on the main site then come here to discuss it out
19:03
@MarcoCeppi sure, but this one's too specific
@AviralDasgupta Whatchya got?
anyway, Lenovo has this thing called Quick Start which lets you boot up a quick and dirty linux based OS, splashtop (boots in <5s)
as and when Google Chrome OS is released, I want to try replacing that with Google Chromium OS or Jolicloud
Now, the only "problem" I have ... is that
you can boot into "Quick Start" mode using a special button on the display
and I want (whichever OS I pick) to boot when that's pressed (like splashtop)
@MarcoCeppi That's not very Ubuntu related, is it?
@AviralDasgupta No, it's an interesting question though. I don't have a Quick Start enabled netbook (Because I don't have a netbook) but I would be interested to see if that was possible
@MarcoCeppi I poked around a bit, and it looks like there's no external (separate partition) installation, so I guess it's installed in a manner similar to wubi... also, I have no idea how booting using that button "changes things". Would be good if I did...
@AviralDasgupta It might actually be in or around the bios or on it's own SSD
19:11
@MarcoCeppi Then, it wouldn't be possible to swap, right? (btw. I'm pretty sure that it doesn't have an SSD)
@MarcoCeppi Also, it's offered as a separate download (installer) from their website.
@MarcoCeppi your smart book hasnt arrived yet?
@lazyPower No, back-ordered
Bogus... Thanks CES.... :|
@MarcoCeppi i was wrong yet again, they have the 1.4.x JQuery lib included as well.. i'm lost on why this isnt working... and my project lead isnt answering :|
Sorry I'm a little upset because I accidentally destroyed my slinky
I hate it when that happens.
19:21
@MarcoCeppi video or it didn't happen
so how did it happen?
It got tangled
and I kept trying to get it untangled
and destroyed it in the process
Yeah yeah, that sucks
19:43
@MarcoCeppi: 4ea9723e951e90d6fcf
if you can puzzle it out, i'll give you a cookie man. I'm banging my head off the desk left and right now
I get a 404
add a 0 on the end
had to let you play with the 3d 404 page :P
@lazyPower HTML5 fun :)
What's not working? Same issue?
19:47
yeah its just not doing jack.
I can include the libs if you want
ehhhhhh, maybe. Let me take a peak first
Is the code in JQuery block inside of LeadHandler?
yeah, thats what i'm trying to accomplish
just hiding the div elements
declaring them as classes, ID's is not working
So is that in the LeadHandler.js file?
si
i have the LeadHandler.js posted as well as the MasterPage
Okay, two problems
You going to use ID, or Class?
19:51
ID
Try that
uhh all you did was add a nbsp?
Nope, all I did was remove the <script> tags
No dice
in IE or Chrome
which revision control software should i use for simple text documents? svn, git, bazaar?
19:55
@htorque i'm a fan of Git
Post the library and the rendered HTML output please :)
@htorque +1 on @lazyPower Git FTW
But it's really up to whatever you are most comfortable with
it's really just writing a text document, so no fancy features needed
So, whatever is easiest and you're most familiar with :D
kzh
kzh
@htorque use mercurial
@htorque what are you using to write the document?
LyX has version control built in
19:59
definitely not lyx
although you have to install an extra package
:D
i'm not sure yet, probably kile
e60f911b98ab0b51b469
dropbox. :)
dropbox is a great solution as well
kzh
kzh
20:01
Dropbox is nice.
I'd probably use bzr then. Definitely not svn.
dropbox only if you're working solo
@dv3500ea personal vendetta against svn?
oh, I assumed solo when he said simple text files
20:02
nah, i'd don't like to put it somewhere online
yeah, solo
No, I meant "only one person writes it"
Dropbox has no conflict management
the only conflict's i'm going to have are the ones with myself :D
then dropbox is fine.
@lazyPower no but as far as I know, you need to commit to some kind of server
cvs/svn is server-client
kzh
kzh
20:03
You can collaborate with a dropbox folder.
some svn clients support local repositories.
eg: tortoiseSVN
kzh
kzh
or TortoiseHg
bzr and git you just keep everything local then push to a server if necessary
20:04
i repeat: i'm a fan of git ;)
kzh
kzh
same with mercurial.
yeah, distributed would be fine
kzh
kzh
I'm a fan of mercurial.
Mercurial is distributed.
guess i'll toss a coin for git/bzr
I have no clue about git vs bzr vs hg
i never used mercurial before :-(
well, what's wrong with getting input from experienced users?
@htorque because it's a squabble fest
kzh
kzh
I love that site, almost as awesome as howfuckedismydatabase.com .
20:08
i'm not asking, if emacs or vim is better :D
kzh
kzh
VIM!!!
Nano, Pico
@MarcoCeppi you see'ing what i'm seeing?
lol, nice
kzh
kzh
Can I flag that as offensive?
20:10
@lazyPower No?
@MarcoCeppi it keeps appending ct*_$id to the elements....
Not everything though. Which is interesting

Q: .Net Changes the element IDs

PraesagusHi, .Net is kindly changing the element ids on my pages by appending a ct100_ to them. As much as I appreciate microsoft trying to help me keep from duplicating ids on my site, I think I can manage it on my own. Can anyone tell me how to prevent this? Thanks in advance.

known issue. nice.
What just happened? A number 2 just appeared over my avatar and asked me if something was spam when I clicked on it.
It has now disappeared.
cool

A: How can I make sure one Upstart job starts before other Upstart jobs?

James HuntThe solution is to approach the problem from the other direction: to satisfy the start criteria for Centrify, it is not necessary to make existing services depend on the new Centrify service, rather make the new Centrify service depend on existing services. For example, an Upstart configuration ...

the new upstart guy is already answering questions!
20:17
@dv3500ea on chat?
@lazyPower yes. The number was blue not red like normal when someone @pings you.
interesting....
@dv3500ea Yeah, it happened to me. You're a 10k chat user
You get those blue mod messages too
Oh I see.
so was that something someone flagged as spam in chat?
@JorgeCastro You should tell him to register his account
@dv3500ea Yeah it was in another room - someone said "to hell" and someone got offended by it
20:21
@MarcoCeppi i suppose thats not hte issue though, as its not prepending to the <div's> i'm trying to modify with JQuery
@lazyPower yeah. Is it live that I can test in my browser and run firebug against it?
no, just on my ASP dev server run off localhost
Ah, gotchya
hang on let me portforward it
20:26
nevermind its denying all connections that dont origionate from localhost
alias kamikaze='sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y' - at least now i know why banshee is gone :P
haha nice @htorque
E: Broken packages => broken heart :..(
:D
the power of diversity: banshee uninstallable? so what, i'll start rhythmbox.
@MarcoCeppi i know why it didnt work now
@MarcoCeppi the div elements were not rendered yet so it couldnt hide something that did not exist. D'OH!
moving that script into an inline <script> tag below those elements worked.
@lazyPower Weird, I guess there is some other tom-folery going on that is causing the script in the head to be executed prior to the loading of the dom
20:33
You saw the source, so you KNOW thats a fact.
sifting through this hodge-podge mashup of .Net, JQuery, and VB has given me googley eyes
I noticed that there is a "span" HTML tag that's being rendered inside of the <head> for the Google Analytics which might be what's casuing that
that span tag should be injected at the bottom of the DOM in order to gather proper statistics, PS
I'm not seeing it
hold on
found it, thanks.
Theres several of them
egads
any web page experts?
21:01
@TheX Sure, I'm pretty knowledgeable
@MarcoCeppi cool just curious
I think I'm going to donate a weekend to the One Laptop foundation
21:18
hi
ELECTION UPDATE: SF, SU have elections on going
21:45
@MarcoCeppi Nice. Any particular OLPC project?
22:24
@MarcoCeppi sweet! Maybe we're coming up soon!
@JorgeCastro Howdy, Jorge! This is one sweet UI for chat and questions...
oh hi @nealmcb!
long time no see!
Indeed. ElectionAudits still keeping me busy....
hello
22:27
i want to ask, is it OK to use askubuntu as QA tutorial site?
Election Markup Language (EML) is an XML-based standard to support end to end management of election processes. History of EML The OASIS Election and Voter Services Technical Committee, which met for the first time in May 2001, was chartered "To develop a standard for the structured interchange of data among hardware, software, and service providers who engage in any aspect of providing election or voter services to public or private organizations. The services performed for such elections include but are not limited to voter role/membership maintenance (new voter registration, membership...
We should get stackexchange to make launchpad links get expanded like e.g. wikipedia (see the faq)
@nealmcb paste in a bug report. :)
@GrizzLy yes, absolutely, the more the merrier!
@jor
@JorgeCastro ok tnx :)
@GrizzLy you can edit a previous post for 120 seconds - see the faq
Let's try.... post with typo
:)
the little pencil to the left of that "typo" post shows it's been edited
can you guys see that one?
I think it went public today
22:39
@JorgeCastro Yup. Are you one of the founders?
I signed up and committed, so I was in the private beta
this is the one I hope to found ^^^
I just missed the private beta for security.stackexchange.com
But I've been having a good time there anyway
@nealmcb I'm not quite sure. I've heard about the project on and off and just now found out it's mostly open source with Git feeding their VCS
@JorgeCastro which project?
Cool, SciFi is in public beta
22:45
@MarcoCeppi Oops - I replied to Jorge by mistake. Now I get it.... Yeah, OLPC is great, even with some wobbles along the way. Fantastic hardware price/performance.
@JorgeCastro still 80 seconds to edit this to give us more clue
:)
what a brilliant question, I must say. giggles
@nealmcb I'm on guitars.se too
but I am there only to learn, so really I do is vote a bunch
@nealmcb Yeah, I'm just now discovering their reach. So I'm going to see what I can possibly contribute to them
