not shocking

Ya, we're a pretty friendly community.

and they call us ubuntu users the snobs :P

Who does?

it's a general statement I've heard a lot

There's quite a bit of snobbishness surrounding statements about how much better Ubuntu is than Windows.
It kills me to see people write Micro$oft.

lol
I personally prefer MacroCrap

I think each tool has its strength... it just might take a bit longer to find Windows' strength :)

@GeorgeEdison lol

one of the pics is so wrong
two of them
the middle bottom pic is nasty

the upper right and the middle one on the bottom right?
heh

and the right bottom pic is wrong because he has so little money wth!!!
that should be at least 3 times as much

:P
I did a mistake. :)
I posted a lazy question at physics.stackexchange. Lesson learnt: "Post a question only when you really want an answer to it."

12:30 AM
So... would the phrase "Case in point" be justified here?

It linked to MacroCrap!

And the two images. But apparently I don't understand how Markdown is rendered here.

RebeccaChernoff can answer that.

@ændrük lawl
I like to make fun of Microsoft and I don't like them but I'm not the anticorp kinda person you talk about on your profile :P

12:34 AM
for example I like HP, even though they can't make their mind up about linux

Now that looks familiar.

It's from your blog that I regularly follow. :)

I'm not a linux a fanboy for the record

Q: How about making it possible to set up bounty on someone else's question?

vavaMy sad story: few months ago I was looking for a solution to my problem and was about to ask a question on StackOverflow when I found already existing question with slightly different wording. Sadly, this question had almost no answers. Now if I own the question, I would just set up bounty on it ...

I'd love this.

@iamsid: You can do that.

12:41 AM
Oh this exists!

it's right there
on the question's first answer

Notice the [status-completed] tag.

:P Today is not my day, clearly! :P

Q: Which variant of English should I use when my target audience is the world?

iamsidI know that all variants of English (American English, British English, etc.) can be generally understood by everybody who knows any of the English variants. Q: grub/burg listing a lot of os's

MatthewI guess I've got more than one ubuntu installation (either two or three) along with a windows 7 installation. Each of the ubuntu installations also list something extra (maybe like a safe mode?) within grub. Firstly, how do I remove the ubuntu installations I don't use? (how do I first identify ...

@iamsid: Done.

I am running Ubuntu in VirtualBox (on a Windows 7 host). Several times now, the top-level menu bar, the task bar — and seeming...

ok so it appears this one is a dupe
however the answer is better than the original questions answers.

2:58 AM
@MarcoCeppi yep

3:35 AM
:P That worked well...

4:21 AM
@Stefano: 4 days later... :) I think I finally fixed that glitch with JetFTP.
I still need to do some more testing though.

4:43 AM
Aw.... had to pull a restart there after I locked up the computer.
Seems to pass the test now.
@Stefano: If you're not too busy sometime, could you please test JetFTP again with the same script you used last time?
0.1.6 is on LP building right now. By the time you read this, it should be built.

@GeorgeEdison Hey, what time is it where you are?

Oh, nvm :)
8:55 PM

I just got up, it's 6am, my brain doesn't work right I though it was late at night in ca

Oh, it is in Toronto :)
But I'm not near Toronto.

4:58 AM
you're somewhere around vancouver then?

Yeah.
Argh! It crashed again!

cool i got something right (:
I'll make some coffee if you don't mind (:

Sure. I must have something else messed up now.

did you profile the memory usage when the segfault happens?
you know, maybe you're just hitting some arbitrary limit, perhaps recursion depth or number of processes

2 hours later…
6:37 AM
does anyone know the su password for the live cd?

@KaustubhP what happens when you just type "sudo su" (you should be on a root-shell from then on)

@StefanoPalazzo hang-on.
@StefanoPalazzo sudo: must be setuid root

just to answer the question, the password is blank
mh.. I can't really test this at the moment.

try to type "sudo passwd root", it should ask you to set a password
if that works, you can become root by typing "su"

sudo passwd root gives me the same error: sudo: must be setuid root

that's on a normal Live CD, right?

6:45 AM
yes.

huh
you shouldn't need any password, sudo should just work if I remember correctly

that was also on the system, for which I am booting from the cd. question here: askubuntu.com/questions/21931/…

I must be missing something

I remebered that too. I also typed su and tried ubuntu, root, and a blank as apsswords

normally, you can't log in with the root account, you first have to set a password by doing the "sudo passwd root" thing,
sudo requires only the password of the current user, and that this user be a member of the "admin" group
have you tried @karthick's answer?

6:50 AM
yeas, trying it now.

No idea why that would happen on a live cd

Ok, I fixed the sudoers file, and the changed permissions of /usr/bin/sudo to 4755
now its higlighted in red, which i can only assume is related to admins

@KaustubhP Did you solved the problem?
This is my output,

7:07 AM
@karthick87 yes, i can sudo now, that fixed the problem :) thank you very much!

oh cool

the sudoers file had a problem. in one line it was %sudo = no password

Still, it shouldn't have happened on a live cd

@KaustubhP Oke you are welcome :)

ii changed it to %sudo = (ALL) ALL as given in the link

7:09 AM
you did just boot it up normally, correct? (no chroot or anything like that)

@Stefano: I ran it under valgrind - it's a programming error.
I think I can fix it, though.

@GeorgeEdison cool. Do you know whether it's to do with threading or memory?

It has to do with some memory being freed in a slot.
Apparently that's a no-no in Qt.

I see
Well I'm glad that I could make a little contribution, sorry that you now have a load of work to do on it :\

7:26 AM
@StefanoPalazzo yes, it boots from grub now, not a prob.

8:04 AM
@StefanoPalazzo I am again going out of town for a week..So i think i cant catch you..You went up high :) Good luck \O/

hehe @karthick87 :) Wish you a fun trip

Thankyou :D

8:17 AM
I'm going to be busy this week...
... just in case you don't see me around.

very good of you (both) to let the rest of us know, by the way

4 hours later…
12:07 PM
phew, our room is so much better than rooms on some other exchange site :/
*sites

12:32 PM
@KaustubhP Most of us come from a different community (Like the IRC room and Forums) So giving one-off help via the room is more customary :)

@MarcoCeppi thats why you guys, and hence chat.AU rocks \m/

12:47 PM
SF feels like the russian cold, and this place feels like a house with a fireplace in that cold!

1:18 PM
I tried to answer like 2 questions on SU once
and didn't even get a single vote. :(

yeah, i know what you mean @JorgeCastro.
Jorge Castro is here! crowd throws a riot haha ;)

I am always here

I would know, since I'm always here watching him

I have the day off so I can AU ALL DAY LONG

Lucky, I'm at work again

1:29 PM
is it possible to mark a question as a dupe, but move an answer from the dupe to the original?

@JorgeCastro We can merge the questions - but whatever question is the parent - that accepted answer will stick

hmm, maybe I can ask the person to just post on the original

However, we can "up-vote" the heck out of that question to have it rank higher than the original accepted answer
I wish MODs could override accepted answers sometimes...I guess they viewed it as either abuse-potential or dishonest to the OP

I think if the user hasn't been seen for X months that would work
oh I have an idea
when we dupe it I will yank some of that guy's screenshots too and put them in the other one
so we can make the original better

Or we can just merege the original forward
Making the newer one the parent

1:33 PM
oh we can?
oh dude, that's the way to do it, since we did all this troubleshooting on the original one
and it was all mostly just guessing, heh

Yeah, that's what I meant by "whatever question is the parent"

oh ok
if you dupe it forward I can go clean it up

When we merge one is a "Master" the other is "removed" or merged into
Line up the questions - I don't even know what we're talking about :)

ok
this should be the parent:

Q: gnome-settings-daemon doesn't apply themes, unless I kill it and start it manually

Alex BlackUPDATE: It looks like i'm experiencing this bug where Ubuntu can't do themes on fast computers (e.g. SSD drive and/or i7 CPU). UPDATE: I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a SECOND brand new computer. I logged in for the first time, and themes displayed ok, I then activated the recommended Nvidi...

then I'll rename the parent to something useful

Okay I'll go ahead and merge them
Wait - neither of these have an accepted answer

1:38 PM
well, there is no answer - it's a weird bug... you can find it numerous times on LP

Do I even need to merge at this point - or will closing be sufficient?

do we get a sign post if it's closed?
I mean, there's enough info there that people will run into it I think

On the old question yes

ok, yeah I guess a close will work

It says marked as closed duplicate of "X" and the top of the post is edited to say "Duplicate of"

1:41 PM
and then we can upvote the newer answer
rock
sometimes I wish nonupvoted comments would expire/rot after X amount of time

A: Ubuntu 10.10 forgets desktop theme.

Marcelo Cantos@zpletan's answer lead to a bit of hunting around, which quickly unearthed what seems to be the root cause of my problem. It's detailed in Ubuntu Bug #574296. In summary, my Core i7 system with an SSD starts everything with sufficiently different timings that gnome-settings-daemon runs too early,...

upboat that one!

I'm on an upboat!

leaving ... on an upboat
don't know when I'll be back again
hmm
should we have a gnome-system-daemon tag?

@JorgeCastro Can it stand on it's own or is it a meta detail?

on it's own
I just wonder if it would be popular enough

Then it is a viable subject for a tag
Almost as popular as this tag I would imagine:

no way
I can't roll myu eyes enough
actually, I should fix that

Please kill, with fire. ( the tag )

A: Probability of trouble-free upgrade?

j-g-faustusIt's an interesting question, but also very hard to answer, among other things since "trouble free" is a quite subjective metric. But we can try to triangulate some numbers: The likelihood of having an upgrade (any upgrade) work perfectly for everyone is zero. This is independent of which op...

how do I remove a tag? just untag the question?

I feel cheated

does a tag vanish if no answer uses it?

dunno

@JorgeCastro Yes, just remove it. The system will clean up un-used tags in 24 hours now

1:48 PM
@htorque yes, i think in a month.

Since we can't "delete" them

oh ok, awesome
@MarcoCeppi how can we get rid of our meta-tags now?

24 hours, or 30 days whichever is correct
@JorgeCastro Got to get the SO team to delete the tag
Since untagging x hundred of questions is kind of tedious

right

this answer is completely repulsive, now what do I do? How do I approach it without being an arse about it? :-(

1:50 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Why do you feel cheated?

close the question. the best answer is "somewhere between 0 and 1". :P

yeah that question is pretty unanswerable imo
I just ignored it

Because he uses neat tricks to appear halfway scientific, then pats me on the back and says it's not really possible, so we should listen to his unconnected ramblings instead
(see I'm already being an arse about it)

Just down vote him

so just -1
wow, we're the most popular room on chat!

1:52 PM
makes sense oops

@JorgeCastro Yeah, we're like number 3 in overall messages

all
thanks
to
marco

@MarcoCeppi which room is it again?
I can't find a meta.SO room

meta.SO and SO have their own chat server
Root access beats us though, the SU room

oh, so all SE are on one

1:54 PM
Wait, no it doesn't

and the trilogy on another?

Well SU is a trilogy site and it's on here. Just SO has it's own server

It goes like such:
The gaming room, Ours, SU, everything else
Gaming room is at 78.1k but I kind of expected them to be chatty
We're at 47.4k messages
Followed by SU at 31.5k

The SO Tavern, is that what I am looking for?

1:57 PM
That's on the other chat server

ok, on which server can I find the SO team to delete the tag?

@JorgeCastro You got to email them :D I'll drop a line in the Mod room asking for it
We're getting rid of ubuntu-desktop right?

ok, well I am off today so feel free to make me do work
yeah
and rename ubuntu-server to just server

I can do the rename that's not a problem

From the Department of Redundancy Department.

Q: Can I virtualize a pre-installed Windows 7?

SpashHitI am considering buying a new computer with Windows 7 (64-bit) pre-installed. Would it be possible to install Ubuntu (preferably 64-bit) dual-boot on such a machine, and then, using VirtualBox / VMWare, etc. under Ubuntu, make a virtual machine that "points to" the existing Windows 7 OS (without...

man, that would be such a brilliant feature
600 questions with no upvoted answers

2:00 PM
@JorgeCastro You can do that...can't you?

dang
well, I think after the fact you can p2v it up
but it would be nice if it was just an option in the installer

I thought you couldn't boot windows on two different sets of hardware?

> merge of [server] and [ubuntu-server] complete!

allright!

and so it this one!
> merge of [bandwidth] and [bandwith] complete!

2:03 PM
hah

splash-screen, splash, boot-screen, boot-splash - i'm sure most of the time they mean the plymouth splash

yeah
those should all be synonyms to plymouth

If someone wants to make the tag synonyms for those
I'll approve and push them through

ok
done
hmm, is there an easy way to see pending suggestions? I find it difficult to find synonym suggestions, I would probably vote more

2:10 PM
oh man, awesome. /me bookmarks
oh, lol, audio -> sound, I don't see how we missed that until this week

I was super hesitant on that merge
that's why I've left it

I think even if it was well defined people would mix it up anyway

In Good Subjective, Bad Subjective, we made a pretty solid first stab at defining a constructive subjective question, one that I’ve been happy with so far.

Constructive subjective questions:

But the six guidelines above depend partly on the questions, and partly on the answers. They’re a fine starting point for determining what a good subjective question generally looks like — but I couldn’t fully explain what makes a bad subjective question.

That was before I saw Aarobot’s epic meta answer on poll questions: …

silly question, cp -r foo/* /path works, how do I move, ie move all the contents of foo inside path?

mv foo/ /path/desitination/

oh, i was trying with the -r flag :P
@MarcoCeppi do i need a * after mv /foo/* ?

3:04 PM
@KaustubhP It's iffy. Let me check - however I think having the / at the end indicates contents where as just /foo is folder
Yeah, you need the *

I am always confused between /folder, /folder/* and /folder/ w.r.t. cp, mv and rm.
mv apache-tomcat-6.0.29/ /usr/share/tomcat6/ mv: `apache-tomcat-6.0.29/' and /usr/share/tomcat6/apache-tomcat-6.0.29' are the same file
had to use a * to tell it to mv the contents

Q: How to change the Unity Launcher's icon theme?

aldomannDoes anyone know how to change Unity icon-theme? For instance I use Faenza in my desktop session, but unity does not use it, both in panel and panel apps (applications and documents). So, anyone?

is this 10.10 specific?
I think the new icon one could be a dupe?

@htorque congrats dude!

@JorgeCastro yeah it's for 10.10 only (contrary to what my screenshot indicates)
I know my answer is wrong somehow, just not exactly how it's wrong at the moment :)
have you got a link to the other one?
