2:00 PM
@TheWanderer obviously he's a civil engineer. And through out my interaction with them, I can see that CE are not interested in programming at all. Basically each time I tutor a CE , they just want ze codez and that's it
So yeah . . . that pisses me off
Meanwhile, I've exam tomorrow, and we agreed to meet up again.
So I think I'm gonna give that guy ze codez and go on my merry way all the way to victory town to study EMF stuff

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy get used to it. I've had to teach people like that very often. The thing is, most people dont' care about programming and there's no reason a civil engineer would find it interesting. They want to learn how to build bridges, not programs. So I can understand why they don't care and only want something that works.

@terdon I understand that,too, but at least for the sake of passing the class maybe a little effort would be nice ?

When you don't care about what the class teaches, you just want to pass the damn thing and move on to the things you find interesting. It's one of the problems of teaching people subjects that are only tangentially related to what they are actually studying.
And if you think civil engineers are bad, try teaching 20 biologists how to write perl scripts.

Oh, I feel you there

Q: How to install grub on existing Lubuntu installation?

Ionică BizăuI have Lubuntu 16.04 on an USB flash. It kinda worked, but grub failed to be installed. Now I'm struggling to install grub. I'm in the live cd right now. Any ideas what I should do? I tried to mount the partition and run: grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda but this failes with The...

I asked this question ^ I'd really appreciate any suggestions!!!

2:05 PM
Program: `Missing right curly or square bracket at /home/terdon/scripts/foo.pl line 4, at end of line`
Student: "Whaaaaaaaa it's not working, I have no idea why"
Terdon: *sigh*
@IonicăBizău Come on, give us something to go on! Are you chrooted? How did you mount the local drives? Hint: looks like you're not chrooted. Just follow the instructions here:
11
A: How can I fix/install/reinstall grub?

terdonSo, it sounds like you have not installed a boot loader (e.g. grub) on the disk. This means that although you have a valid OS on it, there is no way to boot it and so you can't use it. You need to attach the HDD to a working computer (you can use a live CD), set up a chroot environment and insta...

@terdon Exactly, not chrooted.
Thanks, will check that out.

@terdon Well, what would you suggest : git commit to teaching that guy today or just write ze codez and go focus on my exam ?

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Depends on i) exactly what your job is and ii) what the student wants.

@terdon grub-install /dev/sdb fails with The program 'grub-install' can be found in the following packages:...
@terdon Should I run that when I'm in chroot?
And apt install grub fails with E: Package 'grub' has no installation candidate

Yes, everything needs to be run from the chroot environment.

2:11 PM
OK, how to solve that?

Run it from the chroot.

This got so frustrating... :-( But I think if you solve it I'll give you a bounty

And are you sure the name of the grub package is just "grub"?

The program 'grub-install' can be found in the following packages:
 * grub
 * grub2-common
 * lupin-support

OK.
Are you running everything from the chroot environment?

2:13 PM
I think it has internet connection issues... :-(
Yes
# ping google.com
ping: google.com: Temporary failure in name resolution
Any ideas?
It fails to access the packages too.

OK, then edit your question and add all this. I had no idea what you were doing from what your question said.

@terdon This will sound bad, but I can't even edit the question.

Did you follow all the steps when doing the chroot? Did you mount the /dev directory?

It's slow only on specific sites.

@IonicăBizău ?

2:14 PM
Yes.

What is, the live system?

When not chrooted it works fine.
It's Lubuntu 16.04 live cd

Then exit the chroot, edit your question and add all this information.

Hello :)

@terdon I cannot do that because askubuntu is terribly slow in the browser.

2:15 PM
@IonicăBizău Didn't you say it works fine when not chrooted?

@terdon Yes, but that's in terminal, not in the browser.
I'm trying to edit the question.
Maybe the upload speed is terribly slow, have no idea...
mount --bind /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/foo/etc/resolv.conf solved the internet in chroot
Doing apt update.
@terdon OK, so that command you suggested failed like this:
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Unknown partition table signature
Unknown partition table signature
Unknown partition table signature
Unknown partition table signature
Unknown partition table signature
The file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly.

@IonicăBizău nice

@terdon So, how to solve this?

Is your /boot a separate partition?

(sorry, updating the question just hangs)––will do that once I'm home
Hmm, to be honest I don't know...
How can I check?
I don't think so.

2:25 PM
@IonicăBizău df /boot

# df /boot
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1      477863704 2650432 450869364   1% /

OK, it isn't a separate partition.

So, now what would be the next step?
(I'm doing this for a friend and the evening is slowly coming... :/ )

What do you have in /boot/grub/grub.cfg?

It's a long file. Should I paste it here?

2:30 PM
Is this EFI?

I feel that's the issue: I guess it's related to bios legacy booting...
But I have no idea where to set that.
I didn't see anything in BIOS about it...
How can I check if it's EFI

Might be, might not. I don't even use grub anymore myself, I just use systemd-boot.

So, can that be an alternative?

@IonicăBizău ls /boot is there an EFI partition?

I'm really bad in this... :-(
Lubuntu was saying that I have to install grub or an alternative.

2:32 PM
But also, what exact command are you running. Is it still grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda from the chroot?

@terdon That wasn't from the chroot

What are you running from the chroot then?

@terdon I followed your steps and run the grub commands from chroot.
Before your answer, I didn't use chroot.

OK, so you ran sudo grub-install /dev/sda from the chroot?

Exactly

2:34 PM
And you also ran sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg before that?

Yes, that went fine.

Damn then. Don't really know what else to try.

Should I try systemd-boot?

When you manage to connect, please update the question. Someone with more EFI-fu might be able to help.
@IonicăBizău You could. Systemd can boot EFI systems (of course, it does everything else). But I can't really walk you through it. I did it once by following the Arch wiki but that's all I know of it.

Oh, I see.
Thanks for suggestions!

2:36 PM
Good luck!

Thanks

By the way, that seems like a very common error so also check the dozens of google results for it.

I'm doing that... but can't understand them... :-(

that whole killing process or sacrificing child seems to be a bug. Now repacked stock xenial kernel and installed. Should not happen again if they were right

3:07 PM
nah. happened again :(

@terdon How is gummiboot compared to GRUB? Wikipedia and Arch Wiki read like it is pretty minimal.
its installation and configuration reads pretty complicated though, whereas GRUB just worked™ for me

3:22 PM
It is pretty minimal, yes. But the installation was very painless for me. Everything basically worked. In contrast, I had a lot of trouble getting grub to play nice with my EFI install.

GRUB is a diva...

guh
why am I so tired

not enough sleep?
anaemia?

@fossfreedom is there no budgie-desktop package in the repos I can install?

Q: what is "kernel–user space API"?

Takis -TI am studing about apparmor. And to be more specific, for the "hats" inside the policy. In here [Apparmor Profile Language] says for "hats" that, it calls change_hat API. Can you explain the difference between the "kernel–user space" API and the "kernel internal" API? And which of these 2 differe...

aha, 16.10 has a budgie-desktop package.

still no window switcher though

Fixed broken suspend where waking to black screen for last 3 days... Why does suspend work perfectly for months and then just decide to die one day???
After many attempts of trying one thing, reboot, try one thing, reboot I stupidly changed 4 things rebooted and it worked. Now I don't which exact thing fixed it :(

@WinEunuuchs2Unix What are the 4 things you changed ? Hi Rick ! :) Good afternoon ! :)

Well I wrote notes but I missed a step in my notes hang on...
- Try changing nvidia from 304.135 to 375.39 proprietary driver.
- Run `sudo apt update` and `sudo apt update`
- Run `rm-kernels` and remove 10 older kernels
Note ^^^ I've had daily Ubuntu changed to "every two weeks" for awhile now.
@cl-netbox "Hi :) long time no chat"

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Yeah indeed ... well, I think the suspend thing is a graphics drivers problem in combination with the kernel version being in use - which NVIDIA GPU do you have ?

My GPU is GeForce GT630M (second version with faster ram and newer lib)

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy ONI STREAM

5:05 PM
@cl-netbox I did a 3 hour project that helped me get 10K (yeah!) which you might be interested in: askubuntu.com/questions/901393/…

@WinEunuuchs2Unix okay - 304 drivers are wrong ... 370 or 375 or 378 are correct - which kernel do you use ?

I use various kernels... I had tried booting 4.4.0-71 and 4.9.17 during failed attempts... last boot after successful changes was using 4.9.17.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix WOW more than 10000 points now ! CONGRATS ! Well done Rick ! :) +15 additional points from me for that ! :)

@cl-netbox Thank you very much :) It's surprising how a cute little 3 hour project generates so many votes. My 3 week project I thought everyone in this room could use for the scripts they post in AU answers would be admired but it got ZERO INTEREST. Indeed muru and terdon thought it should be moved to a different site: askubuntu.com/questions/900319/…

@WinEunuuchs2Unix use the default ubuntu hwe-kernel in case you are on 16.04 and install nvidia-370 from GPU drivers PPA ... then suspend should work ! :)

5:10 PM
@cl-netbox You missed the point... SUSPEND IS WORKING now. 375 driver proprietary is being used.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Well, then leave it as it is ... :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix for me the opposite is surprising ... sometimes I spend a lot of time to address serious issues and often get them solved - unfortunately the answers and solutions don't get many upvotes :(

Lots of people tell me how complex solutions get little votes whilst one-liners and the like get many votes shrugs

@TheWanderer who ?

5:20 PM
mark

Hi @SergiyKolodyazhnyy ! :) In 5 five hours your exam starts - correct ?

@cl-netbox no, tomorrow

We all know so much about Serg's life we should rename this room "@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Diary"

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy means in about 29 hours ? :)

something like that

5:23 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix and you don't get the strange rainbow borders with 375?
I'm happily on 381 now.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy okay ... good that I asked ... unnecessary fingers crossing avoided ! :D Now I know when exactly I have to start it ... :)

I'm gonna have to go write that stupid C program for my student, if I want the time to study for my own stuff

@ByteCommander Umm... I don't actually use nvida... after selecting the driver I use "nvidia-prime intel" or whatever the option is.

uh... ok
why did you buy the card then if you don't use it?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix so you disabled NVIDIA - no wonder that suspension works ... hahaha

5:26 PM
Let me explain why I installed it in the first place... I have a conky script that displays nvidia GPU Mhz, Memory Mhz, Temp and Threshold Temp... I just wanted the conky display to be more cool. The conky display isn't getting the nvidia information though, probably because Intel i915 driver is utilized.

@ByteCommander those are still beta ... but if they work, okay. Good evening ! :)

Wait... wat? You installed an nvidia card to get some more graphs in your system monitor?

Well no, I contemplated running games too but I only have one trilogy of windows games so far... it's not graphs,,, text fields in conky... and yes I like to do stuff like that peak into system internals :)
^^^ notice Conky nVidia fields are all null
every few months when I'm in between bash coding projects I try to get nVidia working again... I've even posted a bounty once to get a SE Winter Carnival hat.
With this room running, 8 open chrome tabs and Project M audio-visualizer running with VLC playing music CPU utilization with i915 driver (Intel HD4000 graphics) is only 5% so I have no practical reason for using nVidia.

i need to know what that overlay is. tell me

sorry.... what's an overlay???

5:38 PM
It's conky, which I never understood how to set up

@ThomasWard even more interesting would be to know why he is not on 16.04.2 ! :D :D :D

That's a very old picture though

heh

^^^ current picture

@WinEunuuchs2Unix ah ... looks much better ! :D :D :D

5:40 PM
notice sunrise and sunset at bottom. Used by display-auto-brightness app written for byte's question.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix nice, nice :)

Thanks but I think it pales in comparison to what the professional conky hobbiests make in ubutnu forums.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix no, I think it looks quite professional ! :)

I use the vnStat totals at the bottom to monitor my 150GB / month ISP plan to make sure I'm not watching too much HTML5 youtube news in the month.
I used to have youtube running all weekend and not even paying attention to it... that burns up GB's

@WinEunuuchs2Unix that's a good point ... can't you get a flat rate from your ISP ? I have one which costs only 30 Euro each month and have unlimited internet usage. :)

5:54 PM
Mine is 150 GB and it's $63 CAD which is about €50 EUR

@WinEunuuchs2Unix hmmm ... quite expensive :(

There are two major ISP's cable company SHAW and tv company TELUS and they are about same price.
Canada lacks competition and regulators you see in USA and Europe.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yeah, that's exactly the reason : not enough competition ! anyway, have to go now ... see you next time around - goodbye :) Congrats for passing 10K again ! :)

@cl-netbox Thanks :) Have a good night.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Same for you ! :) Bye :)

6:00 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix netherlands... we basically have 2 1 using cable and the other using telephone network
and the one doing cable is owned by the same company that owns HBO sooooooo the telephone network does not have HBO unless you pay where the other one offers it as part of the normal pricing

Plus we both have a queen... or at least you used to have Queen Beatrice... We have Queen Elizabeth.

Wow, I had no idea WINE was so efficient! Just for grins, I ran the Cinebench CPU benchmark in WINE, and I got almost the same score as running it in Windows 7!

6:20 PM
WINE uses Windows XP compatibility mode right? In Windows 7 that might be faster too.
To make game run in Windows 8.1 I had to set Windows XP compatibility mode.

what the bleep. the dd-wrt forums just sent me my password in plaintext. YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER!!!
you guys aren't idiots.
that really makes me want to go on a swearing tirade in their forums.. but I'll resist.

@Seth no, they are idiots. Any website/organization that distributes passwords in plain text probably deserves that title

fair enough.

6:36 PM
Sometimes it's hard to believe it's 2017 outside. People do stupid stuff that would be understandable in the 1980s, 1970s because nobody cared about security back then. Nowadays with literally daily reports of companies being hacked and data of millions of customers compromised , we still hear of stories like that where an organization just bluntly ignores safety of user's private data

@Seth Lots of peeps swearing in systemd forums... ;)

can you make that one message so we can star it ^ ?

BTW @Seth I think if Canonical/M.S. are honest, Unity was dropped because it wasn't profitable - not because the community saw their work as fragmentation. And, the only reason the community saw their work as fragmentation... is because it was. And, it involved a lot of ignoring user requests for extended periods, not realizing that the core of Ubuntu's user base is actually the regular, everyday user (not people who need stuff like Landscape), and these are the ones they let down the most
...through lack of customization options, ignoring certain feature requests because they just simply "didn't fit the vision" (what vision?), etc.

I don't think that's the case, personally.

@Zanna done

although it's true desktop users got the short end of the stick, again.

7:31 PM
Desktop users have been left behind for a while, but it's only those who were really paying attention (but not very vocal) who noticed that, it seems.
A lot of people gave up on Ubuntu and went to Mint and other distros (even Arch-based distros), not because of Unity per se (though it played a role), but because the general experience became stagnant, and honestly, it must have felt like they were speaking to deaf ears at times. I'm not trying to just be negative, to be clear, I just think that going forward, the "powers that be" need to really take a look at where they went wrong (and continue to go wrong).

well dropping Unity was just another bad move in that direction, IMO. Although I understand why it was made.

I feel sorry for the people who will lose their jobs :(

A way to save and restore changes was in the planes, but with Unity's demise I don't think we'll end up developing it.

ok, I get you.
I purchased a vps and I wanted to instal linux and cpanel on it. however, since I never used a vps before, I'm not sure if the operating system instal has been done correctly.
was looking for some small guidance

what specifically?

the vps control panel is solusvm.
i loged and then clicked on 'reinstal' and selected the OS I wanted, then pressed continue and it showed a message saying that the install had been started and it should take about 10 minutes
is this all I have to do to instal the OS? I saw some videos where they would get an actual interface for doing the instal, rather than command line

Do we have a generic "I can't hear sound" question?
Because I can't hear sound.
:P

You're deaf?
Try Health.

Nononononono :P
I mean my speakers aren't making any noise.
I confirmed that everything is physically correct because Windows makes sound.
And pavucontrol is showing audio being played.
But I can't hear it.
I've adjusted the volume in every possible way I can think of, including alsamixer.
(This is Ubuntu 16.04 on a laptop if that helps.)

sounds like a question.

It does, but don't we have one already?
I can't believe I'm the first user with no sound :P
Wait a sec...
I don't see pulse at all in "ps aux"...
And yet:
$ pulseaudio
E: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Daemon already running.
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.
Stale pid file perhaps?

time to look at the source..

10:45 PM
It starts if I do "pulseaudio --kill" first.
But still no sound :/
Time to start a question, I suppose...

@NathanOsman For my Inspiron 17R 7720 SE using Intel 7 Audio Chipset (1 generation newer than yours) I had to make sure my Dell drivers were up to date for BIOS and Windows from their website to improve things all over. HAVE I EVER MENTIONED HOW MUCH I HATE WINDOWS? CAPS LOCK IS STUCK FOR SOME REASON AND THE ON-SCREEN KEYBOARD IS FROZEN SO I CAN'T USE THAT TO TURN IT OFF.

I wonder if you can hold the shift key to type lower case?

good idea
is Seth kidding around though?

I don 't think he's kidding
And it's a bad idea I had as a solution... I was just curious :)

taping down the shift key is not a bad idea... typing in lowercase is probably more acceptable

11:49 PM
I must say in all my decades of using Windows that particular problem hasn't happened to me.

Windows has evolved
it used to blue screen on you but not on purpose.. now it restarts on purpose while you're trying to do something. How things change but don't change.

Actually after hearing Bash For Windows was created I've become more optimistic.
Now I'm redoubling my bash learning efforts here in hopes of porting them to Windows in 18 months.

huh, well good for you
why 18 months?
