@TheWanderer obviously he's a civil engineer. And through out my interaction with them, I can see that CE are not interested in programming at all. Basically each time I tutor a CE , they just want ze codez and that's it
So yeah . . . that pisses me off
Meanwhile, I've exam tomorrow, and we agreed to meet up again.
So I think I'm gonna give that guy ze codez and go on my merry way all the way to victory town to study EMF stuff
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy get used to it. I've had to teach people like that very often. The thing is, most people dont' care about programming and there's no reason a civil engineer would find it interesting. They want to learn how to build bridges, not programs. So I can understand why they don't care and only want something that works.
When you don't care about what the class teaches, you just want to pass the damn thing and move on to the things you find interesting. It's one of the problems of teaching people subjects that are only tangentially related to what they are actually studying.
And if you think civil engineers are bad, try teaching 20 biologists how to write perl scripts.
I have Lubuntu 16.04 on an USB flash. It kinda worked, but grub failed to be installed.
Now I'm struggling to install grub.
I'm in the live cd right now. Any ideas what I should do?
I tried to mount the partition and run:
grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda
but this failes with

@IonicăBizău Come on, give us something to go on! Are you chrooted? How did you mount the local drives? Hint: looks like you're not chrooted. Just follow the instructions here:
So, it sounds like you have not installed a boot loader (e.g. grub) on the disk. This means that although you have a valid OS on it, there is no way to boot it and so you can't use it.
You need to attach the HDD to a working computer (you can use a live CD), set up a chroot environment and insta...
When you manage to connect, please update the question. Someone with more EFI-fu might be able to help.
@IonicăBizău You could. Systemd can boot EFI systems (of course, it does everything else). But I can't really walk you through it. I did it once by following the Arch wiki but that's all I know of it.
It is pretty minimal, yes. But the installation was very painless for me. Everything basically worked. In contrast, I had a lot of trouble getting grub to play nice with my EFI install.
I am studing about apparmor. And to be more specific, for the "hats" inside the policy. In here [Apparmor Profile Language] says for "hats" that, it calls change_hat API. Can you explain the difference between the "kernel–user space" API and the "kernel internal" API? And which of these 2 differe...
Fixed broken suspend where waking to black screen for last 3 days... Why does suspend work perfectly for months and then just decide to die one day???
After many attempts of trying one thing, reboot, try one thing, reboot I stupidly changed 4 things rebooted and it worked. Now I don't which exact thing fixed it :(
Well I wrote notes but I missed a step in my notes hang on...
- Try changing nvidia from 304.135 to 375.39 proprietary driver. - Run `sudo apt update` and `sudo apt update` - Run `rm-kernels` and remove 10 older kernels
Note ^^^ I've had daily Ubuntu changed to "every two weeks" for awhile now.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Yeah indeed ... well, I think the suspend thing is a graphics drivers problem in combination with the kernel version being in use - which NVIDIA GPU do you have ?
@cl-netbox Thank you very much :) It's surprising how a cute little 3 hour project generates so many votes. My 3 week project I thought everyone in this room could use for the scripts they post in AU answers would be admired but it got ZERO INTEREST. Indeed muru and terdon thought it should be moved to a different site: askubuntu.com/questions/900319/…
@WinEunuuchs2Unix use the default ubuntu hwe-kernel in case you are on 16.04 and install nvidia-370 from GPU drivers PPA ... then suspend should work ! :)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix for me the opposite is surprising ... sometimes I spend a lot of time to address serious issues and often get them solved - unfortunately the answers and solutions don't get many upvotes :(
Let me explain why I installed it in the first place... I have a conky script that displays nvidia GPU Mhz, Memory Mhz, Temp and Threshold Temp... I just wanted the conky display to be more cool. The conky display isn't getting the nvidia information though, probably because Intel i915 driver is utilized.
Well no, I contemplated running games too but I only have one trilogy of windows games so far... it's not graphs,,, text fields in conky... and yes I like to do stuff like that peak into system internals :)
^^^ notice Conky nVidia fields are all null
every few months when I'm in between bash coding projects I try to get nVidia working again... I've even posted a bounty once to get a SE Winter Carnival hat.
With this room running, 8 open chrome tabs and Project M audio-visualizer running with VLC playing music CPU utilization with i915 driver (Intel HD4000 graphics) is only 5% so I have no practical reason for using nVidia.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix that's a good point ... can't you get a flat rate from your ISP ? I have one which costs only 30 Euro each month and have unlimited internet usage. :)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix yeah, that's exactly the reason : not enough competition ! anyway, have to go now ... see you next time around - goodbye :) Congrats for passing 10K again ! :)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix netherlands... we basically have 2 1 using cable and the other using telephone network
and the one doing cable is owned by the same company that owns HBO sooooooo the telephone network does not have HBO unless you pay where the other one offers it as part of the normal pricing
Nier Automata is a weird game. 1st save spot is behind the 1st boss and death means to reload from the beginning. Plus when you finish the game 3 times you get a shop... where you can buy Throphies :D
Wow, I had no idea WINE was so efficient! Just for grins, I ran the Cinebench CPU benchmark in WINE, and I got almost the same score as running it in Windows 7!
Sometimes it's hard to believe it's 2017 outside. People do stupid stuff that would be understandable in the 1980s, 1970s because nobody cared about security back then. Nowadays with literally daily reports of companies being hacked and data of millions of customers compromised , we still hear of stories like that where an organization just bluntly ignores safety of user's private data
Okay so i've been scouring the internet, but i've yet to find a guide that shows how to install os x (hackintosh) on a laptop with ubuntu 16.04 already installed.
I've been using this 16.04 for over a year now, so you can imagine that i've made so many configurations and installed so many softwa...
BTW @Seth I think if Canonical/M.S. are honest, Unity was dropped because it wasn't profitable - not because the community saw their work as fragmentation. And, the only reason the community saw their work as fragmentation... is because it was. And, it involved a lot of ignoring user requests for extended periods, not realizing that the core of Ubuntu's user base is actually the regular, everyday user (not people who need stuff like Landscape), and these are the ones they let down the most
...through lack of customization options, ignoring certain feature requests because they just simply "didn't fit the vision" (what vision?), etc.
Desktop users have been left behind for a while, but it's only those who were really paying attention (but not very vocal) who noticed that, it seems.
A lot of people gave up on Ubuntu and went to Mint and other distros (even Arch-based distros), not because of Unity per se (though it played a role), but because the general experience became stagnant, and honestly, it must have felt like they were speaking to deaf ears at times. I'm not trying to just be negative, to be clear, I just think that going forward, the "powers that be" need to really take a look at where they went wrong (and continue to go wrong).
I have been trying to add a second OS Ubuntu 16.04.2, actually I have installed Centos 7 as primary os.
I download the ISO file of Ubuntu and load it to USB drive using the DD.
I tried to boot from the USB using the grub2 terminal without success.
now i am trying to load the ISO from my hard...

Updated Intellij today to 2017.1 and it works fine but when trying to load it from Docky it won't startup. It works perfectly fine on the Unity Launcher and if I click the super key and manually type in intellij and click the icon there it works as well.

ok, I get you. I purchased a vps and I wanted to instal linux and cpanel on it. however, since I never used a vps before, I'm not sure if the operating system instal has been done correctly. was looking for some small guidance
the vps control panel is solusvm. i loged and then clicked on 'reinstal' and selected the OS I wanted, then pressed continue and it showed a message saying that the install had been started and it should take about 10 minutes is this all I have to do to instal the OS? I saw some videos where they would get an actual interface for doing the instal, rather than command line
I'm trying to get IPv6 working on my local network. I know my ISP (Comcast) supports it because anything connected to the modem/router combo I rent from them gets assigned an IPv6 address and communicate using the protocol (can connect to ipv6.google.com and gets 20/20 on http://test-ipv6.com/)....
I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 that won't play sound. To be more specific, I can't hear any sound from the speakers when running Ubuntu 16.04. I also dual boot Windows 7 on the machine and sound works fine there.

@NathanOsman For my Inspiron 17R 7720 SE using Intel 7 Audio Chipset (1 generation newer than yours) I had to make sure my Dell drivers were up to date for BIOS and Windows from their website to improve things all over. This might help you too: dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/…
HAVE I EVER MENTIONED HOW MUCH I HATE WINDOWS? CAPS LOCK IS STUCK FOR SOME REASON AND THE ON-SCREEN KEYBOARD IS FROZEN SO I CAN'T USE THAT TO TURN IT OFF.
18 MONTHS OOPS CAPS LOCK ON... I was doing some Nautilus scripts coding there... as I was saying 18 months is when I plan on buying the best laptop today at 1/3 to 1/4 the price in the future. It will no doubt have Windows 10 on it.
