3 to 5 copies with one print run
depending on your ncr
colorful printing on preprinted forms.
I'm thinking for invoices and shipping documents only... not for printing out memes and emails with jpg's.
3 week programming project to webscrape AU got no votes in 3 days. 3 hour project to display current calendar and time in large letters got upvotes in 3 minutes sigh: askubuntu.com/questions/901393/…
what the hell zsh
when i press up, i expect to go to the last command i ran.
not when you have multiple terminal windows, or when you put a space in front of the command (then it's not in history).
no. same terminal.
e.g., i want to reach a systemd command i know i ran in that terminal. all i get through up is the last four or so git commands
Try Ctrl + R and type few letters to see if it comes up.
until i start typing and then press up, then it works.
I want it to work just pressing up if i havent typed anything.
00:13
It works for me going back more commands than I can remember... not sure how big the history is but it goes back days in time.
Comparing kmail with Thunderbird...
What about xmail? that was recommended someplace for emailing from bash.
it's like i can only go back up though the last 3 commands.

It looks like I have 40,052 history commands
i didn't even run ls in my current session, but somehow it's the first thing that happens when i press up.
type the command I typed above and see what happens?
and i just got "openssl passwd -1 1234" which I know I didn't run for three weeks.
I get the first 20 history entries.
Not the last 20 entries? I just did "history 1000" and it's all there.
first 20 entries.
00:18
I just did "history 4000" and I see stuff there that's over 2 weeks old.
I dunno maybe your history configuration got changed somehow?
that... doesn't help.
hmmm.... well something is broken somewhere
can somebody please explain to me why did GNOME decide to do everything in JavaScript ? I've not seen any single extension to GNOME shell written in Python
like. . . why
updating to redstone 2, wish me luck...
For some reason I just felt like watching the movie "Reds 2" tonight...weird.
00:49
god damn it oh my zsh
01:02
I wanna have some coffee but don't wanna mess up my sleep pattern again. I've been pretty cool about it last few days, passing out early and waking up early
Well my computer booted back up...
01:23
This is getting absolutely ridiculous.
Chrome is using half a gigabyte of RAM for a single Gmail tab.
I wonder if Brave is any better considering it's based on WebKit.
My gmail tab uses about 500 MB too.
must be all the NSA plug-ins... we should teach them to code better :p
You might have a point. Maybe it isn't the browser.
Firefox wants to use 450 MB too.
Gmail - we're looking at you!
01:56
60 GiB is not 491,520 MiB.
#Fail
Oh wait.
Dangit.
Argh. I am the stupid one.
are you? or is the person that designed the menu stupid? ;-)
I typed a lowercase "b" so it was correct to assume bits.
I wondered why it was so far off the number I was expecting.
oh, you used a search
02:04
Yeah.
well then, Google should have figured it out... :D
man, so I had a suggested edit rejected from StackOverflow, saw my stats and realized they are seemingly always rejecting my edits (I've only suggested a handful) for stupid reasons.
according to three reviewers, my edit makes no sense
Most of my edits fix typos.... hard to reject them I guess
I tried to correct a typo before, and it got rejected as frivolous
I changed "true" to "True" in Python code
Now that should have been a valid edit.
in most languages isn't it "true" or "TRUE"?
02:09
It won't compile with true unless you do something really silly like:
true = True
^--- don't do that, BTW
when I made the edit today, I wondered why I don't correct things more often. Now I guess I know
I have enough rep. there to cast a vote to approve edits, so in the future, feel free to ping me when you make them.
thanks :)
making the world better, one small edit at a time, lol
so it looks like the reason my first suggested edit years ago was rejected is that the answer was crap, so I tried to fix it and the rejection reason was that it changes the answer too much (from being wrong to right, I guess)
out of four reviewers, one approved, one rejected saying it should be a separate answer, and two rejected saying it changes the answer too much
I guess that raises a philosophical point... should we leave a wrong answer and not correct it because it should in theory get downvoted over time? Although in this case, it got voted up and accepted?
Yeah :|
Your edits have made it a correct answer.
But the technically correct thing to do is downvote.
02:23
Oh well. Hm, so is it late where you are Nathan?
7:30pm.
And crazy windy outside.
oh right, BC?
you have a laptop? or at least, laptop recommendations? Something lightweight, for coding mainly, ideally should have no problems with Ubuntu
I have a Dell laptop. It's an Inspiron N5110.
It was upgraded to 8 GB of RAM and an SSD.
02:28
I have an Insprion 17R 7720 SE... it's great.
Also 8GB stock, 500GB HDD stock, 240GB SSD add-on, 128GB SSD upgrade to 32GB mSata SSD.
As far as compatibility with Ubuntu, it works fine. WiFi is slow, but reliable. It's been taken apart a few times, so the WiFi speed could be caused by a loose antenna or something inside.
Buy the one with the OLED 3D screen and 3D bluray player if you can find it.
3D screen on a laptop? Nice.
Mine doesn't have the 3D... but it's better. They all have th backlit keyboard though.

Q: Portable HDD not working

Pritam BohraI just unplugged my portable WD hard drive without doing safe remove. I think that action of mine just corrupted my hdd. I did the following: sudo fsck /dev/sdb1 and I got the following result: ` fsck from util-linux 2.27.1 e2fsck 1.42.13 (17-May-2015) ext2fs_open2: Bad magic number in super-b...

02:33
I mean 3D is better screen because of OLED.
hmm, the weight thing is the key for me
Yeah mine is 10 pounds...very heavy for a laptop...17.3" screen though is nice as is 2 regular drive bays plus optical drive plus mSata 1/2 height card.
For my next laptop I'll probably get 19" screen but not sure.
you remind me of a friend who got the 17 inch Apple Powerbook, back when it was kinda strange to have such a large screen on a laptop. We all thought he was crazy
Thing is I bought mine used for $400... retail when released was $2,500... there weren't many options in that category to pick from locally used.
02:46
@NathanOsman jabascript might be to blame
getting close to 9 pm. Should i go pass out or maybe push through and try to study....
hmmm how about a third option... read something more pleasurable than a textbook/whatever and pass out while reading?
remember to brush your teeth first ;-)
that sounds like an option I've not done in a loooong time
grr
I found the perfect settings in Pulseaudio EQ but every time audio stops and starts again, I have to reapply my settings
03:07
script setting the settings? ;p
@WinEunuuchs2Unix at 19", might as well a monitor and a NUC
Doesn't have a battery though
@JourneymanGeek every two seconds?
ow
@WinEunuuchs2Unix at 19 inches? You won't have much of a battery
Still lasts longer than a $200 UPS
03:33
@TheWanderer that sounds like audio card issue
scripts can do a lot but when hardware is crap, scripts can only mask symptoms not cure the issue
04:16
:DDDDDDDD
i'm excited because i got my hands on with android wear 2.0. how long i was waiting :D
tbh i think it was over 3 months
first impressions: it's trippy at first, because of the new menu layout
I wonder how much of that will get rolled into mine
lol
(I have a android/non android wear watch with limited support for android wear apps)
04:20
i forced the update by spamming the green check mark screen for 30 seconds
it got pissed off with me and it gave up
trust me, it took a LONG time
like 30 min- 1 hr for me
it takes time to get used to it because it's different. like holding power button brings up apps, now it brings up assistant
hoi @ThomasWard
greetings minions
how are you this GLORIOUS night?
very glorious
(yes i'm insane, no i'm not drunk, yes I'm not able to sleep, so trying to blow off energy)
i hax the google servers by annoying the green tick and got myself the android wear 2.0
you know Google is in here right
they know your evils now
04:30
yes
and your IP and have reverse hacked your computer :P
nuu please no arrest me
well in other news, server RAM is expensive
yea
$89.40 for six 2GB sticks
04:31
O_O
like DAMN i can get desktop ram cheaper than that. I guess it's the ECC Unbuffered
omg it occasionally freezes
@Edity the RAM or your system
i guess a reset could do
my watch
thats because Google is after you now
they're tracking you
04:32

Q: Symlink with seperate permissions on either side

Not_LazyHow can I create a symlink that works kinda like this: There is a symlink in /home/user/ called "www" I want to make it so, "user" can go into the symlink, and everything be owned by "user" but in the real directory, everything be owned by "www-data" I know I am explaining bindfs, but it's hor...

04:56
they tAKE SO GODDAMN LONG TO SEND AN EMAIL

???
okay
now to wait till monday
05:44
Sigh...
Planet Earth.
First Canonical drops Unity, then America drops dombs, and suddenly WW3.
Can't you humans just... just... hold yourselves together for 2 days straight?
Better than America dropping unity, then canonical dropping bombs then suddenly SPANISH INQUISITION
2
Well...
You do have a point there.
So long as nobody drops GTK+ or Qt, I think we can survive.
But the moment a spec for HTML6 drops and the browsers wars kick back into high gear, we're all gonna die. Except me of course. I was never really "alive".
@RolandiXor I think HTML5 will just iterate forever.
And there is reason to hope.
Look at how fast the CSS grid API was included in current browsers.
Now... if only it worked ;)
Jk
Chrome is pretty good that way. Even Edge isn't all that bad anymore.
05:54
It works but it has been a little tricky for me at times (like randomly NOT WORKING FOR NO REASON)
(If you are referring to Flexbox that is)
No, grid is different from flexbox.
The flexbox thing is useful too but it has its shortcomings.
So I have some catching up to do
Me too - I haven't used grids either.
:P
05:55
lol
Things change so fast O_O
Remember when we had to wait six years for IE to get transparent PNG support?
Things have changed since then.
One moment you feel like an expert, two weeks later you're a beggar on the street asking "Where did I go wrong?"
@NathanOsman what is this... IE... of which you speak? :P
@RolandiXor Everything seems to be iterating faster these days.
Even C++ is clipping along. We went ten years between '01 and C++11.
Then we had C++14 and C++17.
What is especially frustrating is that it is happening faster than documentation is being written in some cases.
And they're working on the next draft already.
@RolandiXor Yes. This. 1,000 times this.
05:57
I've put brushing up on my C++ on hold.
Meh, I just stick with C++11. It does what I need :P
What's different about it for a newbie though?
The biggest thing for me is lambdas.
You mean those camel looking things?
jk
It really shines when coupled with Qt.
Instead of creating a slot, you just pass a function.
05:58
They are used for multithreading, right?
(Feel free to laugh if that is a dumb question - I haven't touched C++ since about 2012 or so)
For example, to show a message in five seconds, you no longer need a class with a bunch of stuff, you can just do this:
QTimer timer;

QObject::connect(&timer, &QTimer::onTimeout, []() {
    // do stuff
});

timer.start(5000);
Essentially three statements.
@RolandiXor They can be but they usually aren't.
It's just a way of connecting things that are "triggered" with actions.
Like connecting a button being clicked to sending a message to someone.
Signals = events that happen; slots = actions to perform
Someone needs to implement something as simple as that for the web ;)
JavaScript has event handlers.
They're not quite the same, but they are usable.
They too are asynchronous.
06:02
Javascript bores me lol
I'm currently writing a Qt library for mDNS - which is a way for programs to find services on the local network. (It's what most LAN printers use.)
I learn it when I need it and forget it the next day :P
@RolandiXor Sounds like me with Perl and PHP.
@NathanOsman sweet
Learn what you need to get the job done and then no sense wasting brain space remembering stuff you aren't using :D
06:03
@NathanOsman I do the same thing with PHP actually :)
HTML and CSS allow me to use my visual creativity, which is where I really shine. Of course, when I need to, I can be quite logical and all that, but I'm more of a visual creator so that's where I like to put my efforts.
Awesome.
CSS is perfect for that.
So you're living in the golden age then.
That's one of the reasons I want to create Anole - so I can see just how flexible CSS is, and how much bling I can get out of it without any javascript whatsoever.
You would not have enjoyed CSS in the early 2000s.
Oh, believe me, I know :P
I tried my hand at it way back when
@RolandiXor With CSS transforms and animations, you will get quite far without touching JS.
@RolandiXor Oh, you know the pain then.
Pats @RolandiXor on the shoulder...
06:06
I was never on your level with coding but I did try a thing or two
I still get nightmares (not really, the nightmares get me :>)
You would have been with more time.
There's nothing special about my skill. Just hard work and concentration.
My issues are lack of focus and dedication, burning out from feeling useless to easily, and of course... living in a country that is technologically backward compared to more advanced nations.
We learned Apache Tomcat in college... just to give you a taste :P
I find music in the background helps.
@RolandiXor That brings back memories of my local library's card catalogue system.
@NathanOsman it sure does. I either use music or put on news on yt
Or even a sermon
I tried listening to sermons, but I often find that I can't remember anything once they finish.
Best to listen to them separately.
06:10
lol
I'm different that way
You have a skill I don't have then :D
I take it background information quite well when I'm working :P
in fact, without some kind of background distraction, I find it hard to focus
I think it is a side effect of being a visual creative type
Could be.
Interestingly though, it is only true that I find it hard to focus without some distraction - if I am working on something. Otherwise, I'm fine.
I always need music - maybe it's part of being an introvert :P
06:16
lol
INTROVERTS DISPERSE!
06:36
@NathanOsman How do you identify an introvert?
........and good morning
@Anwar Thank you @terdon :)
Every time I play 0ad, I reminded why I stopped.
@Anwar good morning!
@RolandiXor hi. good morning :)
@Anwar basically, an introvert is someone who is recharged by being alone (that's a very simplified way of putting it). I'm an introvert, as well btw.
me too
26 mins ago, by RolandiXor
INTROVERTS DISPERSE!
06:43
I always thought I was an introvert.
It seems thing thing is getting more attention these days.
So someone did an unboxing of the Raspberry Pi 4 as an April Fool's joke.
hi @terdon How do you add another time in your clock in Cinnamon?
Introverts tend to be creatives, thinkers, and inventors, which is why a lot of people who are not actually introverts try to identify as introverts in order to fit in with the modern (growing) crowd of "nerds" and "geeks" (terms you should not apply to me, btw, for anyone who might. I despise those terms ;)).
@NathanOsman is there a 4?
Nope :P
Not yet.
:>
I like this person.
06:46
I can't get my hands on the Raspberry Pi Zero for a good price yet.
@RolandiXor ha ha. My thought exactly :)
Is there any relation between having less friends and introvertism?
@Anwar if you really are one though, that's cool :)
@Anwar it depends on the individual.
@NathanOsman I wouldn't know what to do with one if I got it :P
@RolandiXor I do. I saw a video where this guy built a self-driving RC car.
Let me guess, this guy also has time on his hands.
Lemme find the video...
06:51
To quote Batman:
Flash: "So, what's your super power again?"
Batman: "I'm rich."
wow
I wonder if it has a built in crash feature like Google's and Tesla's self-driving cars :>
#trololol
So the Pi uses Python? I thought it used its own variant of C++?
