Problem is there are too many apps out there to learn :(
Oh, remind me to tell you about the 1080p @60FPS MP4 export hack in PowerPoint
It's not really a hack, just a VB script
kiddy script
j/k I've written a cool VBA bar coding app in the past.
Well, here's another dupe

Q: Ubuntu don't render the window boundaries and top left corner correctly after sleep

PaulDongReally I have no idea how this happened or how to describe it correctly. I think it started after an sudo apt upgrade, and every time I close the lid on my laptop and re-open the lid, this happens. It is pretty annoying and really appreciate if any one can help. Thanks

Nvidia really needs to fix this
If this were a Windows driver bug, it would be fixed in a day or two
02:08
I don't think I'll ever use my nVidia GPU except for in Windows 8.1.... in Linux just the HD4000 Intel.
But, this is Linux, so they don't care about us :(
What do you expect when a Windows game costs 100 bucks?
And Linus Torvalds doesn't like Nvidia either
ie Mass Effect Andromeda
Linux doesn't like Ubuntu either, saw the video yesterday.
$100 for a game? That's ridiculous
For that price I could buy a brand new Win 7 Ultimate license off EBay
02:10
What really needs to happen is for a new graphics card producer to enter the market and kick Nvidia's butt
Or 16GB of RAM
Let's face it, Nvidia and AMD hold monopoly
Or a better CPU cooler
The game offers a die cast model for 100 bucks or an RC model with camera for 300 bucks
WHAT? That's insane!
02:11
And the game is made here in Edmonton where I live :D
Who the heck would pay that?
The $300 RC 6 wheeler is sold out on Amazon and it's not released until Dec 2017.
@AndroidDev hardcore gamers ?
I guess
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy yeah, but there's a reason why Intel is so behind them in the GPU market: it's essentially impossible to build a GPU without infringing on either of their patents
Intel just release another suite of Vulkan drivers.
02:15
@AndroidDev hard to believe that in the last 20 years of computing nobody came up with other patents
At the end of the day one must ask themselves "are we in the computer business or the patent business?"
Blackberry's stock price drop coincided with their lawsuits over patent infringements.
@AndroidDev Read that. Just repeats same thing that i have said - two monopolies. Sure they hold tons of patents but I still can't believe there isn't a design that would be unique and not infringe on either company's patent
Seriously, something has to happen to the GPU market
02:30
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Why can't programmers make a startup for that ?
study micro devices
and rock on
That would be nice
@Lorenzo Hi
Who knows. Idea is good, but there's probably obstacles of sorts
that avatarless of you make me wonder
A GPU is nothing but a re-purposed CPU in the first place. Enhanced for floating point and memory transfers... The secret is a standard like Vulkan.
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy What if Intel is waiting to get OpenCL to mature ?
so we can get CUDA cores
or maybe there are too few OpenCL programmers
sup peeps
@WinEunuuchs2Unix llvm is where it's at. there's even an llvm compiler for the raspi gpu.
02:34
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy see ya
Then take OpenGL and make it more efficient
I still think if the hardware and software companies coalesce around open standard Vulcan it will be best for all.
02:59
I don't get nearly enough credit for not turning into a psychopath . . .
I'll give you credit for at least taking a path
at least that is OK

hahahahaha
Well after a REAL long time, Postfix + Dovecot + Amavis + SpamAssassin + SPF + DKIM + DMARC is all done.
the clamav stuff, I have to see if I can recompile to NOT have llvm in it, so it's a much smaller binary.
++++++ = accomplishment then
@WinEunuuchs2Unix you're short a + there
7 out of 8 parts "complete"
@ThomasWard It was impromptu
And on that impromptu I bid Ubuntu Adieu poof
Congratulations, @ThomasWard! you're a real sysadmin now!
03:30
aaaand clamav is... eating too much memory.
meh, on my network everything goes through Snort so blah
Just pushed another commit to work. \o/ for productivity
@ThomasWard that's 100% normal.
I think it dies down after it updates definitions and gets a "feel" for the system
though it is using 500m on my vps right now.
@ThomasWard Is ClamAV necessary?
04:40
Oy.

Q: Turn on my Ubuntu server remotely?

jonneymendozaHi i have a ubuntu server 16.10 computer at home and was wondering if there is a way to turn it on remotely when im away from home? I set up Wake-On-LAN but that only seems to work when im using another computer connected to the same network as my ubuntu server. Any ideas on getting WOL working...

Never heard of libreboot before
@Anwar lib-reboot or libre-boot? >:)
very confusing name :P
@Rinzwind libreboot it seems libreboot.org :D
it could be a LIBrary for reboot >:)
don't know. try to figure...
hmm they do not support a lot of hardware :-P
07:40
hmm. After reading the two messages, last para helped. it's kind of booting mechanism to replace EFI/UEFI thing i guess
they claimed that UEFI may contain backdoor. I wonder if there are any proof for that..
All blobs contain backdoors :=)
But not all backdoors are bad.
Same as with those BIOS passwords. Yes you can set one and stop some noob trying to get into your machine but we all know there are generic passwords that always work. Is that a bad thing? Not really. Otherwise you would have to throw your computer in the bin if you forget the password.
hmm

@zanna I can't reproduce that screenshot - have no backup of it. Should I delete the question? What do you think?

I don't know how else you can fix it... maybe you can describe it!
it's up to you. But I would vote to delete it if it wasn't by an active user

Hi, need help regarding flagging a post. Is this post considered link only? askubuntu.com/questions/63022/convert-filesystem-ntfs-ext4/…
Joker told me that you all have weird rules
I think it is LOA. But maybe we could fix that one
I usually fix them if I can make anything of the link
Ok, so no flag there, right?
borderline :/
oh... I would say no flag
because there can't really be anything but a link
That's fine. Just some feedback for my bot. :)
Thanks!
:)
any time!
edited the post haha
11:09
@BhargavRao Weird how?
(not taking offense, just curious)
@terdon you are a mod :=) can it get any weirder?
Woof, woof whine. I mean, He has a point there.
jman! :)
@JourneymanGeek Nobody asked you, Gaspode. :P
@TheWanderer hahaha :D
@terdon he told me that if there are no other answers, then the post is not flaggable. Some convo starting from here chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/36449374#36449374
11:47
Um. News to me.
@BhargavRao And I don't see him saying that anywhere. Hmm, I guess we should talk about that :)
As a general rule, I'd say yes, flag link only as NAA. The only problem I see is when such a NAA is accepted and the only answer. . .
in SEBotics, yesterday, by jokerdino
@BhargavRao I ended up deleting that because we got better answers.
@terdon I took some data from this -----^ and came to a conclusion that "link only posts are not flaggable if there are no better answers"
@BhargavRao "A mod fixed something manually" != "not flaggable" :P
This was about this, right?
errm, then I guess I misunderstood that completely xD
@BhargavRao Dunno. One of us did, anyway :)
@terdon yep
11:52
I also asked Joker in the mod room. We'll see what he says.
@terdon lol, that's why I'm asking for feedback here so that I don't screwup my flagging and get flag banned :D
12:17
have some cookies!
how is that for feed back?

Anybody wanna read a novel about indicators ? askubuntu.com/a/900074/295286
@ByteCommander remember that wireless speed indicator question ? Answer posted
Actually, that's two in one answers
@terdon Joker is on SE ? we need Batman then

Deep Woods, EU ?
people come up with all sorts of things
That wireless indicator made me quite excited actually. It will be just a beginning. I plan to develop it much much more
13:23
@terdon I wonder what part of Illinois Batman is from.
If it is somewhat close maybe I can confirm if he really is Bruce Wayne or not.
@TheXed Metropolis, of course.
No Gotham, sadly, but Metropolis is the same universe :P
Metropolis is Southern IL, almost Kentucky, a good 8 hour drive...
It is a tiny little town....
I have never been there...but I have a friend that was born there...
@TheXed Named Clark, I hope.
I guess more people live there then I thought....but still fairly small...compared to say...Chicago...
@terdon actually my friend is female...
@TheXed Lois?
13:28
and as far as I know she doesn't have any super human powers...
:(
Boring.
I know...she is rather boring...
I don't even know why she is still my friend...no super-human powers...
You know what else is boring ? Denver weather. We've snow again
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy it is supposed to snow here tomorrow....
Well, at least I'm not the only one
13:31
From what I hear it could be a measurable amount...
Did everyone get out to vote in their local elections today?
"Everyone" meaning "those of you in the US", I assume?
@terdon well yes..
What were you voting for?
Mayors and such like?
things . . . now, i wish we only knew what things
I've an idea: #VoteForSerg
yeah local politicians if their terms are up...(mayors, school boards, town/city officials) and new laws...and for us whether we build a new school building or not...
13:40
Um. I just read this in an article on the Guardian:
> In 2015, I failed a background check for a new job because, according to the NYPD, I hadn’t paid the ticket “I” had gotten for walking in a park in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn after hours, at 10pm. Now there was a misdemeanor on my record, and I had 60 days to clear it up if I wanted to keep the job, which meant trekking to lower Manhattan to criminal court.
You can get fined for walking in a park? WTF?
At 10 in the evening!?
o.O
Uuuuhmmm... well that's a new one
I mean, I'd heard of this weird "jaywalking" thing you guys have, but walking in the park?
"after hours"
0_0
13:48
Yeah. 10pm is dinner time here FFS!
@terdon you can get fined for flying drones in National Parks too...
Even though the FFA doesn't like it...
@TheXed That makes a certain amount of sense. Being fined for walking is absurd.
as it isn't restricted air space....
Yeah, but it is supposed to be wild nature so having noisy things wizzing about isn't a very good idea.
@terdon they aren't noisy...in fact that is part of the problem...you can't hear them before they are about to crash on your head...
13:52
Depend on the drone then, I guess. I've seen some noisy (cheap) ones.
I think manufactures should have to put some kind of beeper on them so if they do fail the beeper starts going off so people can have an advanced warning from an object falling 400 feet directly on their head...
But that is my opinion, and like arm pits...it probably stinks...
@terdon damn :D
@TheXed Agreed. But don't tell Nathan. :P
@terdon Well, on the other hand though, if there's a big sign saying "Closed after 10PM" and you jump over the fence or something... Now of course, I don't know any specifics here.
@AndroidDev That's breaking and entering, a whole different kettle of fish.
13:57
@AndroidDev that would be trespassing... jumping over a fence is not breaking and entering...he didn't break anything in the scenario...
and you have to steal something for it to be breaking and entry...
@TheXed Right, the question becomes what kind of signage there was
@AndroidDev the signage doesn't matter.... if there is a law on the books, and a person violates the law, ignorance is no excuse...
You don't have to be warned before you commit a crime...
@TheXed True, trespassing sounds right. IA very much NAL
Yes, that's true, but if there's no sign saying you can't enter past 10PM or something like that, then yes, that is absurd.
OK, so it isn't normal.
Reading the rest of the article it is also implied that this only happened because the person walking was black. Which makes only too much sense.
14:01
@AndroidDev but we don't know if there is a sign or not.
Most of the parks around here are very vague and have signs that say they close at dusk...
@TheXed Right. Like I said, I don't know any specifics of this particular scenario ¯_(ツ)_/¯
@AndroidDev so we can't assume that it is absurd...
@terdon jaywalking is dangerous
@AndroidDev jay walking is indeed dangerous...but it is not immoral.
@AndroidDev Sorry, but that's absolute bull excrement. Crossing the road without looking while cars are coming is dangerous. Doing so if you've checked there are no cars around is not. Jaywalking, as I understand it, means crossing the road anywhere there's no zebra crossing and making that illegal is just silly.
Like making it illegal to jump off of high buildings.
A certain level of basic intelligence should be assumed.
14:07
Yeah, well, that's government for ya. No, I'm not justifying it....
Frankly , as a driver, I've mixed feelings about this. There's people all the time crossing road during traffic where speed limit is 45 miles per hour, just a few feed away from zebra. Like take 5 minutes to walk over there, you idiot
If I hit you because you were stupid , cops are going to think it's my fault, while it's really you who put "convenience" above safety
That too --^
@AndroidDev Well, no. That's a very specific government for ya. AFAIK, the vast majority of countries around the world have no such law, or even a term for it. Some do say you should use the crossing if one is within X meters of you, but that's about it.
@terdon actually the definition of jaywalking in the US, is crossing the road where not permissible, or safe...
Jaywalking occurs when a pedestrian crosses a roadway where regulations do not permit doing so. Examples include a pedestrian crossing between intersections without yielding to drivers and starting to cross a crosswalk at a signalized intersection without waiting for a permissive indication to be displayed. In the United States, state statutes generally reflect the Uniform Vehicle Code in requiring drivers to yield the right of way to pedestrians at crosswalks; at other locations, crossing pedestrians are either required to yield to drivers or, under some conditions, are prohibited from crossing...
14:09
but we don't really have zebra stripes in our roads...that would just confuse american drivers...
@TheXed Yes, but as I understand, in many cases (states?) it isn't permissible to cross anywhere but at a crossing.
Well state laws can be very different then federal laws...
@terdon --^
What also pisses me off is bicycles. Again, high speed road is no place for a person weighing under 200 pounds to argue for supremacy with 1.5 ton car. You can joke with law or people, but you can't joke with physics
@AndroidDev Yes, I know. That's what I said.
14:12
@terdon Oh, I didn't see the second message you posted. Yeah, you did say that
Let's nuke this:

Man. Why does every script kiddie in the world imagine that if they can just install Kali they will magically be transformed into 7up3rHack3rMan?
Because most "tutorials" online use Kali and Backtrack
those who don't know any better assume that having that OS makes them a h4x0r
It's a real problem in Unix & Linux

@terdon I don't think its harsh. I'd go so far to create a canonical "How do I do X on Kali" that just says "RTFM" and dupe every Kali question to that one
Just some random examples :P
You'd need a 3k rep bot to do that.
Or you'll need to run it on your account.
14:23
@terdon funny you might say that...
Get 5 volunteers, and [kali-linux] posts are automatically closed in ~5secs
I primarily use my sock to snark on kali linux questions

14:27
@terdon what about this one? askubuntu.com/a/900120/671840 Flagable or not?
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Wait, wasn't it you that I told about the Chrome task manager?
@AndroidDev yeah
And you discovered it was a plugin using all those CPU cycles?
@BhargavRao Yes. Link only should be flagged as NAA. Just like everywhere else, I don't think Jokerdino meant to say anything different.
14:28
@terdon ah, I guess I got confused. Danke!
@BhargavRao Bitte
(That was meant to be German, not French, in case any francophone was shocked)
translate: Bitte
(from German) Please
so yeah, it was german!
Or thank you (I think)
@terdon even though this a a verbatim quote, would it be acceptable to not put it into a block quote in order to make the code blocks more visible? askubuntu.com/a/900121/518562
@AndroidDev thank you for reminding me ! it's a VPN extension that I have that is causing high CPU usage, but also youtube
I sometimes learn and forget things
14:31
@BhargavRao Look up bitte in French. I see no reason to post it here.
Oui. Merci
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy So problem solved again?
@AndroidDev Argh, I see what you mean. IMO, I prefer to have it in the quote block since that's the rule, but you do have a point about readability. Maybe take it to meta?
@terdon I have (sorta) taken this to meta, and it just gets ignored!

Q: Feature request - Change color of block quote

Android DevI'd like to request that the color of block quotes gets changed from a light gray to a light yellow (like SO, AE) As it is now, it's very hard to see the difference between a block quote and a code block. My answer to this post is a perfect example: Customize ubuntu (change logo and startup app...

@AndroidDev not quite. Youtube videos still take like up to 50% CPU, but it's 30% on average
14:33
I post things like that
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy This is why the person always has priority over the motor vehicle irregardless of the scenario in the US.
@TheXed it does have priority, I don't deny that. But also person shouldn't coming close to potential danger, no ? Especially at high speed roads.
Yes, and if they continue to walk out in traffic they are obviously very stupid...but if the same person is hit by a car, then the person driving that car should be charged, depending on the injuries. According to the law.
And this is where I disagree with the law
14:43
If this guy had just done a 15-second Google search...

Q: vboxdrv.sh: failed: modprobe vboxdrv failed. Please use 'dmesg' to find out why

Homunculus ReticulliI am having problems running VirtualBox on my Ubuntu laptop. My laptop is dual boot, and running (Windows 10 - I think, haven't used it in years), as well as Ubuntu 16.0.4 LTS. I have secure boot enabled on the BIOS settings of my laptop. I am aware that there are similar questions posted on h...

He would have found the answer...
@TheXed especially I disagree with the Pathos argument about "the children". I live not too far from high school + middle school. There was more than one instance where urine infuses teenage brain and one of them decides to run accross the road , almost in front of incoming cars, causing everybody to stall and hit brakes. Adn that's again - feets away from zebras
Isn't it amazing how much better things look after an edit? askubuntu.com/a/154184/518562
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy I think if they are under the age of 18, if they display their stupidity then we should be allowed to hit them without consequence...
@JourneymanGeek Heh, I'd even upvoted that
Part of the problem is the law stipulates 100m from a zebra....We don't know what 100m are...
14:53
ugh
why does cp -v only show the source file?
@TheXed well, I wouldn't go too far like that, but at least the law should start taking into consideration the "stupidity" of pedestrian and stand on driver's side a little more
$ cp -v arping.py  arping2.py
'arping.py' -> 'arping2.py'
@TheWanderer you are using cp on your android again aren't you ?
yehs
and it's doing the stupid thing again
where the destination path strips a folder
Think -vbf will help?
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy the real problem is, that the driver is driving a 2k lb+ vehicle and should be in control of it at all times...
irregardless of how stupid his surroundings are...
IF_G5=$(printf '%s\n' "$1" | sed 's/G5//g')
echo "$IF_G5"
cp -vbf /data/media/0/Zacharee1Mods/"$1".apk /system/priv-app/"$IG_G5"/"$IF_G5".apk
that echoes what I'd expect
but it copies to /system/priv-app/"$IF_G5".apk
ignoring the folder
aha
why isn't the BusyBox version being used?
weird
well now I can at least debug it better
