@ThomasWard delivery or receiving email as well?

@NathanOsman both

^^^ I email myself all the time too :p

@ThomasWard ah. I was going to suggest Hectane for delivery.
It's way easier to configure for mail delivery.

i've got mail delivery working fine
it's IMAP logon to Dovecot that's a PITA lol

1:55 AM
.hgu

Speaking of emailing myself... I was thinking of getting cron to email me each day with status updates of daily/weekly/monthly jobs. Any caveats based on people's experiences?
I might even setup scheduled backups just to get emails :D
@Zanna you are editing the question and first answer that are 1/2 decade old. I admire your dedication :) askubuntu.com/questions/194272/…

@ThomasWard yes, I have a similar setup. It takes a while to get everything working correctly. Especially with TLS.

well I've got the IMAP connection working, I'm checking if there's a credentials issue, because it's getting the SSL part, but failing logon

Q: Why does Debian records in 1080p and Ubuntu record in 720p

FrancescLast year I was using Debian Jessie 8 as my main linux os and I used to record my screen with Record My Desktop the resolution of the video rendered as 1080p but recently I have switched to Ubuntu 16.4 as my main os and I'm using EasyScreenCast to capture my screen but when the video renders the ...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Hah that's not even the oldest

@Zanna Good morning 5am early bird... I'm about ready to hit the hay.

twerks into the room hi ppl

And the answer is not very good even after edit :/
Goodnight @WinEunuuchs2Unix :)
Only edited it because there was a delete vote on one of the answers... it's gone now
These days I tend to try to fix the whole page when I land somewhere
(Maybe I will go back to sleep for a bit myself)

Well if you are going to land on an ancient island of knowledge you might as well tidy up everything :)

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy [redacted]

now, How should I spend the night : work on two new indicators or go just chill with YouTube
@KazWolfe no matter how much you redact your posts, I still love you , you fluffy Canis Lupus

Do it all. Multitask!

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy woof

good boy
I think i will write one of the indicators, shouldn't be that hard , and post as answer

write one indicator, watch youtube the rest of the night

4:32 AM
meanwhile, over in the middle of nowhere, 3 mbps for $65
THIS IS WHY THIS SHOULD BE CW

4:46 AM
stackoverflow.com/a/42701457/3701431 "According to CIA's internal coding conventions . . . " Whoa, whoa , whoa . . .

It wastes reviews' time.

That person doesn't have enough Rep to edit CW

@Zanna answer deleted. It could have been useful back in 2012 when question was posted, although I suppose it's not anymore

You need 100

4:49 AM
And people who have 115 can also edit that freely.
Technically, running that edit means actually verifying that problem exists such as to not add false information to the post.

Thanks @SergiyKolodyazhnyy yeah I wouldn't delete it if it had upvotes...
@KazWolfe I have time to click that approve button for useful things like that

@Zanna Do you have time to actually go through and verify that the problem actually exists with the card (like editors are supposed to do, but everyone ignores)?

CW would make zero difference to reviewers in that instance anyway
@KazWolfe Of course not, but that's surely beside the point

Actually, it does.
Rep is a measure of how much the community trusts you.

What?

4:53 AM
If you have enough rep to edit a CW, we can trust that you're not making things up and actually have the problem at hand.
> Reputation is a rough measurement of how much the community trusts you; it is earned by convincing your peers that you know what you’re talking about. (from the Help Center)

I mean we would have to review that edit anyway because the person doesn't have enough rep to edit CW

We would, because we can't be sure that OP is actually having the problem and not just wanting to add his card to the post for lulz.
(of course, nobody would care enough to verify, but still... trivial things like this shouldn't be in the queue, and would in fact get normally declined as an "attempt to reply")

Should not get declined

Hehe, the measure of my rep is very misleading . . .I might be at 45k but give me powah and I'll derail this whole choo-choo train down into the woods

Well, it technically is an attempt to reply.

4:55 AM
Post is clearly a special case

We've (as chat) just decided to waive that rule, which not everyone knows.

It's obvious even in the structure of that section

What's obvious to you is not obvious to everyone.

What are you two discussing here annie-way ?

Why this should be CW. Mostly because it's a bug that affects a lot of people, and should belong to the community because canonical post.

4:58 AM
Haha biased description

Oh? Don't go down that road.

what's CW ? AU has way to many accronyms

Community Wiki

Arguing on mobile is so annoying

OK . . . Well, sure, CW, why not ?
There's plently of those around

4:59 AM
Only downside is it doesn't give Android Dev any more rep.

I get annoyed with the pain of typing even when I'm not annoyed
2

And because Atwood doesn't like them (even though he doesn't work here and his opinion doesn't matter here at Ask Ubuntu)

Eh . . . well, anyone asked Android Dev ? After all it's his post , no ?

Pretty sure he's not for it.

Grace Note on August 19, 2011

When you mark a post community wiki on a Stack Exchange site, that means …

this post can be edited by anyone with 100 reputation

this post can be edited by anyone with 100 reputation

this post does not generate any reputation for anyone when upvoted or downvoted

The main advantage of community wiki — more editing — was nerfed when we introduced suggested edits. With suggested edits, anyone, even an anonymous user, can edit anything — so long as another experienced user reviews and approves their edit. …

5:01 AM
Well, ask him, guys.
On the other hand . . . meh

well, we also got into a debate as to whether to merge into his post, or the post with higher views.

A post is helpful either way

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy he agreed with me, and my argument was mainly there's no benefit to it

There's also no harm.
And in fact there is a benefit inasmuch as more people can edit it and examples and other affected cards freely.
Especially because that question should really be closed as a bug.

There is harm imho in that people can edit more easily and might think they can post NAAs and crappy half answers

5:04 AM
And those get rolled back and deleted like they always do.

> The intent of community wiki in answers is to help share the burden of solving a question. An incomplete “seed” answer is a stepping stone to a complete solution with help from others; an incomplete question is a hindrance and an obstacle to getting a solution as no one understands the inquiry. It is in answers that the goal of community wiki, for the community, by the community, shows its truest colors.

Users will always post NAAs and crappy half answers, regardless of CW status.

That's quote from the link is a good point

Yeah, and that doesn't apply here

Yeah, I somehow don't see incompleteness in the posted answers
Oh, well, I'll just go back to youtube. You guys have fun with this

5:06 AM
There, Zanna. Protected.

@KazWolfe true but I think CW if anything encourages it. You want to make it easier to contribute to a post where I think contributing should be more than usually regulated because of the likelihood of thanks/me too type stuff
Good call

[redacted, see edit history for uselessness]
(Really, though, that question should be closed as a bug, because it really is one.)

35 secs ago, by Zanna
Good call
Yeah, although there could be a new answer fixed by nvidia but that could be an edit. I'm agnostic about whether it should be closed
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy I hate arguing :(

I hate arguing too, which is why I don't do it often, and keep especially arguable users in my ignore list . . . so far there's just one though

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy totally agree, answer-wise there's nothing to add until it's fixed

5:14 AM
either way, i've escalated this to mods, i'll let them decide because we're not getting anywhere. If they say no, I'll drop it. cc @Seth, @ThomasWard
sound good?

Well, how about a meta post first ?
we can do a mate post, too

Might take a calming nap

alright, it's yours if you want it.

naps are rare joy i don't take too often. My sleep is usually equivalent to rough SYSRQ

Lol
Probably me posting seems a bit weird though "this one user thinks we should take x action and I think we should not" it's like a non-action meta post haha
Ok going to close my eyes anyway

that's bias :)

@Zanna tag it with discussion

5:24 AM
it can be posted "should this post be meta"

@KazWolfe is it? Isn't is bias in your favour if any?

everything's biased.

Yeah, 100% true
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy I think all my meta posts are tagged

You know what else is biased ? Transistors . . . they can be forward or reverse biased

Haha
I need sleep

5:27 AM
@Zanna go get some sleep, meta shall wait. Ask Ubuntu won't fall appart if you get a bit of time for yoruself
also I need typing lessons

to be fair, ask ubuntu won't fall apart if every regular in chat vanished

But it sure would be lacking in quality maybe ?

eh
i don't think there would be much difference tbh

@Benny And no, that's not what they need. I mean, it's part of it, but the whole question makes very little sense.

Thanks

I don't think it's answerable in its present state. Do you understand if the OP wants to patch the kernel or this Yocto thing?

not really, i just want to help him to avoid the exception:

@Zanna sounds like you need a better keyboard or better posture.

@Seth oh I'm fine on my real keyboard - I meant on my phone

Ah

but thanks for the thoughtful comment :)
I do need to get a better keyboard on my phone
ie one with swipe input :S

@Zanna you need an IBM Model M for your phone...

oh yeah?

2:07 PM
@Zanna I don't know how that would really work out...I just imagine lugging around a 5lb keyboard with your phone....

it's tempting sometimes... I do waaay too much typing on my phone

@Zanna I try to avoid it if at all possible...
At least any serious typing...

sensible :)

Get a keyboard that has decent predictive text too. Helps a ton.

2:17 PM
yeah very true. I use AnySoftKeyboard which is actually really awesome and beautiful. Much better than any other I've used except that it has no swipe input

@Zanna if you want good themes look into ai.type keyboard. The predictive text requires the pro version, but it's a really good keyboard.
I just use the Google one.

@TheWanderer Yes I saw that and their answers are almost the same

@Seth hmm I should take a look. I use a gorgeous dark theme from AnySoft's extra themes pack... I'm still refusing to use Google Keyboard even though it has swipe. Every time I have to type anything at all on my nexus 7 (which I basically only use for youtube and facetime apps) I'm enraged by the crappiness of the keyboard haha so I'll see if I can follow your advice to get something better for it

Q: Don't forget you can propose a solution including instructions with another OS

userDepthI saw this question yesterday about using encrypted files in a Ubuntu system but it had to be accessed from W10. The solution was mainly about decrypting the files so the copying of files was done in the end by that OS. Since who to use is the goal of AU the solution was actually done by Ubuntu ...

4:55 PM
Rewording tickles me XD

@userDepth Did you reword that meta question? I read it three times and still have no idea what it is about. Maybe a link to the question you are referencing might help.

@terdon I did that
Yes. I did reword it

@userDepth OK. So what's the issue? I mean, what problem are you addressing? Did somebody claim that the answer was bad or off topic or something?
I mean, the answer has three upvotes, is accepted and has received a bounty.

No, but I had difficulties seeing the solution
Because of what I'm explaining
So that's a confusing explanation ?

@userDepth Very, I'm afraid. I don't even see anything that I could call an explanation.
Where's the explanation?

5:03 PM
That our main objective is to learn how to use Ubuntu so when the solution includes using a step using another OS then we don't see it

We don't?
What don't we see? The solution? That the solution involves another OS?

@userDepth I have to agree with @terdon ... I am also not able to get what mean and what you want to achieve ... can you please explain it a bit more clearly, so that we can understand ? :)

@terdon Why do you interpret it as a whole case on every post ?
It only may happen

@userDepth Sorry, I don't understand. Interpret what as a "whole case on every post"?

Is anyone going to tell him asking for accepting, even before a single comment is done is... yuck? I am volunteering. askubuntu.com/a/899807/72216

that we all miss the solutions
IUt was difficult for me to see it in that case

See what? See the solution or see that the solution was for windows?

No that W10 will be the objective of the Ubuntu solution

@tomsk Hello :) Good afternoon ! :)

and leaving it in an external HDD for any system to access it

@userDepth I still don't understand what the point of your meta post is. You found a particular answer confusing, right? OK, but what are we supposed to discuss in the meta post? We all sometimes miss details, but there's not much we can do about it.

@cl-netbox ^^ good afternoon :)
is there somebody who knows KDE very well? :D

@JacobVlijm your comment - upvoted ! if it will help ? I guess not ... unfortunately he still posts this comment under nearly every answer, even though he must have seen that some of them were deleted after I flagged them ... indeed he re-posted them afterwards !
@tomsk I have tested it on opensuse tumbleweed and came to the conclusion that KDE is absolutely not my thingie, so unfortunately I can't help you in this case. :)

@terdon OK I see so that's would be more effort from us, you could post that as an answer

5:17 PM
Um. Not really since I still don't understand the question.

I'll keep this in mind

@cl-netbox really? Im trying KDE Neon right now, and I really like it, I like that customization so much ^^

@tomsk hahaha ... exactly this is the point : for me it is too much of customization ... but I must admit that the GUI looks quite nice though ! :D

5:40 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy not sure why you are pulling fiercely (sais Google translate), but like I asked, let's not do discuss this on the question: askubuntu.com/questions/899317/…
I am fine if your experience is different from mine. Not feeling like discussing this much further. Didn't ask for it, don't see the use of it.

@cl-netbox actually, no clue...

@JacobVlijm my personal opinion : the whole topic (ccsm vs xdotool) is not worth arguing about ... :) or did I miss something important there ? :)

5:57 PM
Actually, I am trying not to discuss it.

@JacobVlijm good decision and solution ... when one person stops discussing, the discussion is done / obsolete / over ... finito - right ? :)
Goodbye to everyone ... see you next time :)

@cl-netbox I've voted to close a question as duplicate, which is a highly voted post and same as what OP of new post asks. For some reason @JacobVlijm takes offense to that, and keeps defending xdotool, even though ccsm solution is just as good.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy hellooo ^^

I don't want to discuss this as I see this is going nowhere. It's my understanding that questions which are similar are voted to be closed since there already exist solutions for them.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy yes ... of course ... often different solutions achieve the same ! :) Hi my friend ! :) I'm about to leave ... :)

6:04 PM
If someone know answer to this question askubuntu.com/questions/899515/… I would be happy :) I would like to create something like launcher List Indicator but for KDE

@tomsk @cl-netbox hello, folks !

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Do you think that @JacobVlijm has a different opinion on that ? He also votes to close dupe questions often ... afaik :)

@cl-netbox I don't think he has a different opinion, it just confuses me why he is against closing that specific question, and substantially claims that CCSM solution is worse even though it's used in multiple posts through out Ask Ubuntu for the same topic, just as xdotool is being used.

@tomsk Well, I guess this could be an interesting and demanding task for our "hero scripters" @JacobVlijm and @SergiyKolodyazhnyy ! :)

@KazWolfe good Canis Lupus to you

Nothing, just greeting

alright, hi.

Company did something dumb.

@cl-netbox I've not seen any so far. In any case, it's a solution just as good
Anyway, I would like to let this discussion go. I've other things to care about
