I am absolutely pissed off about being sick
Not only I feel like carp, I'm also loosing money
OpenCL doesn't work.
:(
$ ./john --list=opencl-devices
OpenCL platform 0: AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing, 2 device(s).
Error creating command queue for device 0 (0:0): CL_OUT_OF_HOST_MEMORY
Device id 0 not working correctly, skipping.
No OpenCL devices found
AMD, we're so close.... Y U NO MAKE WORKING DRIVER?
Hmm... updates available.
Well.
I guess it's worth a shot.
@Serg Hopefully your recover soon. I know we had a bad flu season around here that knocked quite a few people off their feet for a long time.
Yeah, I was really sick in November.
Throwing up, muscle pain, etc.
Welp, carp . . .
BUT, it only took me about 3 days to recover.
So hopefully it's just as fast for you
00:13
You need a carpenter? :P
I usually take weeks . . . Let's just say my immune system isn't the strongest
You need more vegetables :D
Kind of cool you can have functions in bash / bourne shell. Do they have to come first before they are called? Do they only work with line one of #!/bin/sh or do they work with #!/bin/bash too? What's the difference between bash and sh. Should I post this as a question so @Serg can answer and make a 100 points?
How's your progress on quitting smoke btw @Serg?
Your health will benefit from that too.
@ByteCommander I need a million of carpenters , so that I can borrow 1 $ from each, open my own business, make 3 times as much , and return that million while keeping the 2 i made
@ByteCommander I've 10 days , on day 11 today.
I'll probably finish it up with a bang, get a few of my favorite smokes, and let it go for a few months
00:15
@ByteCommander See question on Shell vs Bash above ^^^ should I post the question in AU for you guys? Would it get traction?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Use #!/bin/bash if you developed your script with/for Bash, unless you are really really sure that what you made is POSIX-sh (or something else?) compatible and does not contain anything specific to Bash.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix yes, functions should be declared first before they are called
/bin/sh is default shell, which for Ubuntu is a symlink to /bin/dash
Thanks guys... but should I post the question on the mainboard so you guys can answer and make points?
Dash is very minimal shell, not suitable for interactive use, although it can be. But it's mostly for system scripting
We just won't tell Nathan the mod because it might be collusion :p

Q: What is difference between #!/bin/sh and #!/bin/bash?

virparaif I write, #!/bin/bash echo "foo" or #!/bin/sh echo "foo" both yields same. I have seen some scripts starting with #!/bin/sh or #!/bin/bash. Is there any difference between them?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix there's kind of two questions there, and both of them are duplicate of already existing ones
oh ok no point in posting then :(... Too bad I was hoping to hand out some cookies.

Q: Use #!/bin/sh or #!/bin/bash for Ubuntu-OSX compatibility and ease of use & POSIX

Michael DurrantI know that I can use either as the first line of scripts to invoke the desired shell. Would #!/bin/sh be recommended if compatibility with all unix systems is an absolute requirement? In my case the only OS' I care about are Ubuntu (Debian) and OSX. Given that, could I use #!/bin/bash and be a...

It seems like most of the questions I think of have been asked and answered 5 years ago or so. It's too bad I'm so late to the party!
5 years?
You are late to the party.

Q: What is the difference between bash and sh?

Saif BechanI see two types of code being used: #!/usr/bin/sh and: #!/user/bin/bash I searched for this online and opinions vary a lot. The explanations I saw on most websites say that sh is older than bash, and that there is no real difference. Does someone know the difference between these? Can you ...

Ask Ubuntu is going to be 7 years old this year.
@ByteCommander OK, we get it, stop block-posting :p
That was already the last one.
That's why I wanted to install 17.04 so I could have a list of Q&A for when it goes live in April :p
Everything will be fixed by then :D
00:21
wishful thinking!
IIRC, 17.04 isn't going to do anything special.
What does "IIRC" mean?
Unless they finally decide to go live with Unity 8. In that case, I'm switching to Arch.
If I Recall Correctly @WinEunuuchs2Unix
@WinEunuuchs2Unix IIRC = If I Remember Correctly.
"remember", "recall" - same thing :P
00:22
Unity 8 is there in dual login format I think.... "If I Resemble Correctness" :p
It is, but it isn't the default.
Therefore, virtually nobody is using it.
Let's just say : "If I (remember|recall) correctly "
There we go.
BRB, rebooting.
I live booted 17 last week and the first thing I noticed was screen tearing when dragging a window across the desktop. i was like "forget this I'm not installing it".
@WinEunuuchs2Unix since 16.10 already
00:24
16.10 has Unity 7.5 IIRC
Nope.
7.5.0+16.10.20160906.1-0ubuntu1 to be exact.
Apparently IDRC
BRB, rebooting for real this time.
00:25
ok if you don't come back we'll email you ARCH.
WB
apparently it worked :p
Nope. Didn't fix my problem.
Still can't get OpenCL to work.
How's the weather in Surrey? We're forcasted for +8 tomorrow and I'm getting Telus as ISP that'll give me 15 Mbps upload instead of .25 Mbps from Shaw.
Yup... I meant the rebooting worked.
Meh, mostly overcast.
00:28
Well it is Vancouver winter.... lucky it's not raining I say.
Is it possible to robotically search in google or do they block it? I wanted to make pairs of every lsmod (linux kernel module I have) and pass it to google search with "Linux bug aaaaa bbbbb" reapeat a few hundred times until "Linux bug xxxx yyyy". Then capture any pages with launchpad.net or whatever.
The reason being two modules dell SMM bios and I8K fan control were causing my system to freeze every 10 seconds for a split second. I stumbled across the bug report by accident after a week. So I'm wondering if there are other combinations of drivers that might conflict. Would this be a good AU question you guys could answer and get points on?
I committed fakebook suicide 8 years ago IIRC.
@Serg There's several important things going on: should be There are several important things going on:
@WinEunuuchs2Unix thanks, fixed
pleasure +1 for gud engrish.
+1 to @ByteCommander as well.
01:02
eim treing my besht to wreit in gud Engrish
@Zacharee1 would enjoy this ^
I know Zach has corrected my code blocks and Italics in chat even :p
I'm about to hard-reset my computer. Or maybe I should do that in VM ?
Can I run Windows in a VM or do I have to run Ubuntu in Windows VM?
You can run Windows in VM, although I heard they make some things difficult. Never done so myself though.
Just curious because I have to boot Windows to run games but still have Ask Ubuntu in another window but can't test things without linux loaded.
01:08
@WinEunuuchs2Unix running a heavy game on a VM is probably going to require heavier specs, guess you'd probably be better with a dualboot, and having a linux VM on windows for those quick tests
@IanC Hi. Thanks. Yeah I have quad boot or something now. Are there free Linux VM's under Windows?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix doesn't virtual box has a windows version?
LOL I was asking you the questions... I know there is Ubuntu BASH for Windows 10.
back in 10.
I haven't used windows in a while, can't help much with setting a VM there, but that link I pointed you to is for VirtualBox on a Windows Host, maybe there's some documentation on their website on configuring it on windows
01:24
@ByteCommander what's the nineteenth byte room number ?
around 800k?
nope wait 19 bits would be 800k or so.
you know when you're really tired?
@Serg spell checker has arrived @Zacharee1 better type perfectly now :)
I'm really tired... it's 6:30pm but it feels like midnight.
I wish it were easier to resize mounted filesystems...
01:34
it's 8:30 but it feels like 2AM :p
@NathanOsman and I wish Ubuntu supported HFS+
we can dream
@Zacharee1 It can read them with the right tools.
HFS is a file system or database?
Filesystem.
01:34
yeah but reading is basically useless
It's used on macOS.
I want to write
Don't DMG files use HFS as well?
Did they ever get Btrieve file system working? btrs or whatever it was called?
@Zacharee1 BUT Y THO?
btrfs
01:35
and sure I can take off journaling (if I have a macOS install) but that disables some important features
And it's available. I just don't recommend using it :D
@NathanOsman so I can rm -rf the OS :D
@Zacharee1 dd works fine for that.
So they didn't get btrfs working then :)... I have no complaints with Ext4 works great for me.
in seriousness, I needed it during my Hackintosh days
01:36
I'll never forget the time we used btrfs on a CoreOS cluster.
to repair the installs when they died
We had to rebalance multiple times a day or the node ran out of space.
I think I had 4 OSX installations at one point
10.8, 10.9, 10.10, 10.10
good times
Hackintosh is not an officially supported configuration. Of course it didn't work.
u two are cross talking
01:37
I know :P
I'm faster though.
@NathanOsman I had an HP ProBook, which is basically a MacBook without the style and price.
You should be faster to live up to your higher rep.
so OS X worked pretty well for the most part
Nice thing about being a lowly 7k in this room is I can use code blocks out of place.
01:38
I ended up avoiding the pain and bought the cheapest Mac Mini I could find.
Nathan may have more material rep, but I have higher spiritual rep
2
What does that even mean?
Lol.
nothing
@Zacharee1 le wut ?
I knew you were dead and typing from heaven!
01:38
literally nothing
nothing is literally nothing...hmmm
If you think deeply about it, rep on the site isn't really material either . . .
Who wants to give TypeRacer a shot and race against me?
shhhhhhh....
shush derpworlf
am gud
Madonna sings "I am a material rep... posting in an AU world".
gonna slep
Oh, right . . .@Zacharee1 thank's for reminding me . . . The return of bacon derp wolf is about to begin
01:40
which reminds me haven't seen Kaz Wolfe in 24 hours. Did someone say "Trump" again?
Is "hue" a verb?
Yay, avatar ubuntu-dated successfully
I mean, ostensibly, yes it is.
But in its cultural usage, is it a verb?
It's a noun
HUE!
Oh wait.
I'm thinking of "hew".
That's a verb. "Hue" is only a noun.
01:41
You thought hats were gone ? Well, think again ! askubuntu.com/users/295286/serg?tab=profile
YIKES!
=NSA= "How can we convince everyone trying to hide, to route their traffic through us?" "What, like a free VPN app?" "Bob, you're a genius."
holy crap you're at 41K.
I'm going to take over the NSA and hand out free anti-virus, anti-malware software.
@NathanOsman that girl in the avatar looks cute, and I'm not usually into European/Western girls . . . oh , wait . . that's a spoopy tweet
@Serg dude, that's Taylor Swift ;p
01:44
^--- this
@WinEunuuchs2Unix yep, I amn at 41k here, 3k on U&L , only 311 on code-golf (after last upvote) , and 200 on stack overflow
@Serg Maybe if I join Politics SE I can get 1 million :D
@JourneymanGeek I kind of realized that after I saw "Tweeted by SwiftOnSecurity" . . . Still cute though
I'm surprised.
I have more rep. on Stack Overflow than anything else.
01:46
@NathanOsman Holy High Road Nathan you've joined every SE site on earth!
Well Stack OVerflow is the most predominate site
I can't believe how much rep. I ended up with from this question: math.stackexchange.com/questions/48080/…
I don't even understand half the answers :P
@NathanOsman math is over rated.
How the heck do you even type that calculus crap with the keyboard? Never mind rhetorical question my headache doesn't want an answer!
I could post a question on that site "How do you express the global weather in calculus" :p
extra points for under ocean volcano inputs
@TheXed Some math is useful like 1 gross = 144. But other math is overrated like a black hole 10 billion light years away that might have a nearby planet with life we should rescue.
You know when you drill down into branches of a tree and it's called "recursive" what's a good layman's term for recursive that average joe would understand? I said "repeatedly" in an answer and got chastised.

Accurate to say the least
Did you make that?
lol, no
Just saw it
That's funny.
Not so funny when you've actually stepped on legos :p
02:20
That moment when you try to switch workspaces on Windows from the keyboard, only to get a rough reminder that Windows uses those keybindings to change the display orientation >.<
whoa hooo I got to post my first Stack Exchange Politics Beta (why is it called beta when politics is the world's second profession?) question here: politics.stackexchange.com/questions/14897/…
@Seth ikr
@WinEunuuchs2Unix no I am pretty sure all math is overrated :-P
As a warehouse receiver I have to use math all the time. Forgoing the calculator like other employees use saves time.
02:35
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I have to do math at work too, but that doesn't change my opinion that it is over rated...
@TheXed well when you realize you'd be a caveman without math maybe then you'll think differently ;p
Or will I?
I mean are we really that much better off then cave men?
Our most basic natural instincts haven't changed one bit: eat, sleep, poop, and survive...
lets stick you in a cave with little clothing and no fire. then you tell me ;)
@TheXed I would agree if you said "science is overrated"... ie margarine causes cancer use butter, no wait butter causes cancer use margarine, no wait margarine causes cancer....
@TheXed this is true enough though. I'd rather have people that took history than math.
Because if you look at it that way, it's all the people that took math but failed history that got us in this mess..
02:39
Not when history is written by liars funded by oligarchs wanting to perpetuate the lies.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix lol that isn't science, that is corporate lobbyist trying to get the uneducated folk to buy their lies...and their products...
They call it science which makes it overrated. Unlike math I use at work such as 12 x 12 = 144 which is good to know. Or math I use in hobby like 8 bits in a byte.
Here is some math for you, where in the hell did I put my headphones?
In your breif case.
02:41
I don't have a briefcase...
In your knap sack.
I can't believe I just wasted so much time with some bad question
Nope don't have one of those either...
In your glove box.
don't tell me you don't have gloves now!
Nope I have had them since the last time I went to my car...
I do have gloves, I just don't have a box to put them in...
02:42
it looks a lot like homework, the OP didn't show much effort on trying to solve the issue on its own, and I just wasted like several minutes easily writing a full answer
buy a car... it has a nifty place to put your gloves called a glove box...it's only 34K on average for a car....pretty good deal to know where your gloves are at all time.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I have a car...that is paid for...
plus a car comes with a free container for storing your gasoline!
I just don't put my gloves in the "glove box"
Found my headphones...on my desk...imagine that...
It doubles as a registration and insurance holder.
well at least you didn't find them on your ears, that's always embarassing.
02:45
Only if you register your car, and have insurance...
You REBEL!
How do I make wallpaper span across both displays?
The Gnome developer's mentality has crept into the Ubuntu settings tool.
That is already a question in AU mainboard IIRC
Now nothing whatsoever is happening...
Stupid settings app.
"span" - there we go.
That's what I was looking for.
@NathanOsman unfortunately Unity is still built on a GNOME stack
02:57
Unity 8 may be better though.
@NathanOsman Did you just say you would ditch Ubuntu for Arch if Unity 8 was default?
Did that one turn out?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix If it was default in its current form.
I have high hopes that it will be better when it's complete.
@NathanOsman but we'll be back at square 1. Remember Unity from 11.04? Or 10.10?
Shhhh.
I don't want to think about that.
@NathanOsman acceptable for a low light pictures.
@NathanOsman I might end up switching to KDE or xfce eventually.
03:02
It's an HDR shot.
@Serg I hope you don't mind my edit to your answer. I think you're right about what's causing the OP's problem and, if so, then just using a function instead of an alias (as my answer suggests) would not be sufficient. Whether the OP uses an alias or a function, the insight you have given in your answer (that it must be defined on the machine where the shell is actually being run!) is indispensable.
@EliahKagan edit's absolutely OK , plus with your expertise feel free to edit my answers any time :)
03:45
So . . . Budgie is switching to Qt Frankly, I kinda understand them there . . .
03:58
@Serg so is LXDE
Yeah, I heard about LXQT project. Didn't know that's what it was all about

1 hour later…
05:20
@Serg GNOME will never learn..
I want to believe they will learn one day with new generation of developers, but probably that time won't come any time soon
Oh, palindrome !!!
41114 :D

1 hour later…
06:27
systemd user services are awesome.
06:54
@KazWolfe looks like I'm not the only one who updated their avatar :D

@JacobVlijm Hello, I want to know if there is any way I can restrict the email insertion infront of a domain to only 21 at a time. Say I got a company order where the employees are more than 500 and using gmail. Using your Python script I can successfully seperate the domain and the respective emails with it. But while working with MongDB for insertion, it is troubling as I am making json of it and giving input the record size in MongoDB is limted
@JacobVlijm to 16 MB while the input I am generating with your script is 68 MB or more.
@JacobVlijm So is there any way we can chop out the out and create new entry in the file with the same domain name and other entries
@JacobVlijm Say gmail, email1, email2, ..., email 21 and then chopping to gmail, email22.. and so on
@JafferWilson waitwait, which script are we talking about?
@JacobVlijm just a minute let me share the link with you of my question
@JacobVlijm askubuntu.com/questions/875942/… this question answer
I am here @JafferWilson (in response to your comment)
@Zanna Hello, I have a problem I hope that perl can solve it
@Zanna you have the script with you where I am creating a JSON file. I want to know whether I can make changes in the perl that will restrict the entry of em in a particular domain.
ahh I don't know perl :(
08:09
@Zanna oops I thought you might be knowing.. well no worries.. thank you
you want @terdon :) Maybe he will be around later
@Zanna Hope so. Can you introduce ne to Terdon, please
my bad. I answered your question on the basis that for i in foo bar baz; do some commands to process text "$i"; done works whatever some commands to process text are
@JafferWilson I pinged him, and I think you have met him before :)
@Zanna may be I think so I met him.
@terdon Hello, I have some query using perl script hope you can help me in it.
@Serg more generic icon for now
08:24
Hey everbody
I have one of the most perculair problems, when I place my laptop in the same room as my router my connection drops out, but if I sit several rooms away from it it works again. Anybody have the faintest idea how that's possible?
@JacobVlijm Are you there? I hope that you have got the idea of what the problem is?
@JacobVlijm Should I place my query as a question on ask.ubuntu.com/
@JafferWilson wait, I was baking bread :) reading now...
@JacobVlijm :)
@JafferWilson Ah, I see, yes, that can be done, but we are still facing the file size issue I assume then?
Waitwait, but after the first 21, what to do with the rest, keep it in the same output file on a new line?
08:39
Yes... I want to keep it in a same file in same format. MongoDB can store duplicate @JacobVlijm @JacobVlijm records but records more than 16MB are not allowed
@JafferWilson AHA, but what about the filesize issue we had?
@JacobVlijm I have splitted them to number of different files.
@JacobVlijm and then I have processed then using your script where I need to give output folder and the get the different output file instead of one single file
@JacobVlijm But the thing is MongoDB stored one single line in the form of record or document (more technically). That means a single line should not go beyond 16 MB. That means Files size can be any. But the single line size should not go beyond 16 MB
@JacobVlijm That is why I want to modify the script and get it done. with same domain name only 21 emails each. If there are more than 21 than the output must go to new line having the same domain and print the rest emails in same 21 emails format.
Then it can be solved. I think script #3 can be edited, but could you make it another question? I think it is better to make the process in two steps 1. do the thing script 3 does, then 2. rearrange the files to a certain size (items) per line. This way, the question will also be interesting (and possibly answereable) by others, and it will be more clear.
@JacobVlijm but did you got the problem now?
@JafferWilson I think so, although 21 emails per line seems way below 16mb to me?
08:47
@JacobVlijm because I think I didn't explain it properly. If you got it then I wil make it a question again
@JacobVlijm Yeah.. that will do if it is below 16 MB
Great! That is the best I think; how to rearrange the lines into 21 items max
That way we keep it open, preventing it to become a family party (not sure if that is even English, but translated by Google :) )
:)
@JacobVlijm you can use your native language if you want to say something I will try to understand it. Do not worry. I speak 12 different languages:P
09:04
@JafferWilson WOW, no Dutch coincidentally?
@JacobVlijm A little not much... :) :)
@JacobVlijm here I have place the question . askubuntu.com/questions/877150/… please check it
good morning
@JacobVlijm Hope you are there..... please let me know what to do. Thank you
09:31
@JafferWilson back again!
@JacobVlijm May I ask you what you do? Because as you have said you were baking bread ... :D
@JafferWilson haha, no. I am no baker, just for own consumption. The regular Dutch bread is, well, horrible. I am a musician.
@JacobVlijm ooooh, I like Music and the musician who play good songs.. I wanted to be one but never mind just a Data Scientist for now :P
...I wouldn't mind doing both though.
@JacobVlijm :)
@JacobVlijm Well I hope to hear solution from you regarding my question...:)
09:44
Sure!
@JacobVlijm is there any musician profile you have. I would like to hear you comopsitions... :)
@JafferWilson I am not really a composer, but a classical guitarist :)
@JacobVlijm so you do not have any musician profile. It is good to have one...
10:21
Hi @JafferWilson posted a quick version, still need to tune, but could you see if it works for you?
@JacobVlijm sure
@JafferWilson I know his websiteadress >:-D
and where he lives. How old he is >:-D
@Rinzwind May I know about whom you are talking about?
@JafferWilson about @JacobVlijm >:-D
@Rinzwind ^ This is getting dangerous :)
10:23
lol
lol
@JacobVlijm Do you have website?
@JafferWilson not personally, but from the festival I run...
I also know he knows Pieter van de Staak >:)
@Rinzwind do you know Pieter van der Staak?
@JacobVlijm Sounds good... :)
10:25
just typing his name in google is enough >:)
@JacobVlijm no :D
That's the downside of using your own name online :+)
Globally seen Jacob and me are neighbours :+D
...Funny, Googling my name also shows a nasty biker. Not me :)
says you _o-
that is what all nasty bikers say
@Rinzwind mayby I should keep the image of the biker. FINALLY getting some respect around here.
:D :D :D
Great to know ...
10:33
another morning with nothing to answer for me :(
@Rinzwind what it means..?
oh every morning I scan the frontpage and bounties and new questions queue and pick 5 questions to answer. Found 0 today :P
@JafferWilson I saw a comment popping up, but it has disappeared?
(those 5 often get me to 100,150 rep and then I top that off later in the day to get to 200)
@Rinzwind ^ happens to me frequently lately (no questions for me)
10:35
yeah
@JacobVlijm I got nothing in the output :(
I was surprised I got to 200 a few days ago. It was such a slow day but the rep kept going up slowly. Normally I get a big boost when I answer and then it drops
@JacobVlijm The output file is blank...
@JafferWilson what was exactly the command?
@JacobVlijm I create a file NewChunck.py and used it like this
python NewChunck.py test/
I got nothing in the output but a blank file..
@JacobVlijm ok I see you have edited something
10:40
@JafferWilson You do know you need to set the full path? test/ won't do...
@JacobVlijm if the Python file and the folder is in the same directory they I can give this as input .. but I will try and give the full path again
@JafferWilson nono, you need to give the full path anyway
time for some food. 11am. Thai food. Sounds good :=)
@JafferWilson please let me know, need to go downstairs te receive some guests :)
biab
10:44
@JacobVlijm nothing this time too...
I gave the command like this:
python3 New_Chunck.py '/home/aims/Desktop/tst/'
@Rinzwind me, jealous to your food
@JacobVlijm Sure....
Needs some close votes (if I may trouble you) askubuntu.com/questions/532294/… (OP's answer is a bad version of the answer of the target)
Weird, works fine in here, will be back
@Zanna done
10:46
thanks ^_^
done, and gone for a while ... :)
thanks & cya :)
@JacobVlijm Here take this as test file. all dummy emails.
