12:01 AM
BANG! * BANG! * BANG! * BANG! * BANG! * BANG! * BANG! * BANG! * BANG! * BANG! * BANG! * BANG! *
so half of the world is already in 2017

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yes I find the bot very disconcerting when I write a meta question

can't believe my parents decided to make a huge argument just because their drunk heads wanted a cake and bread for sandwiches and i bought then wrong bread
un fscking believable
i can't even have new year's eve without feeling worthless and alone

12:17 AM
Oh, don't worry.
You're not alone.
At least not alone being alone.

Yeah, at least i still have AU to go to, if nowhere else

Actually I was trying to say that around me people are arguing all day as well, but what you said applies as well :)

@Serg yeah, you have your little wolfpack of ubuntu users here :D

:3
So how you guys are doing ? How's New Year so far (for those who are in new year already) or the Eve?

01:28 here
We were outside in the yard blowing some more or less boring fireworks up for about 45 min, then came back in half frozen.
Hopefully I won't get a cold from this.

12:30 AM
Nice. We ain't got no fireworks, but i'll sure go smoke outside and watch them

Some neighbors fired up some seemingly really expensive batteries, so watching was actually more interesting than shooting here too.

12:43 AM
I just walked back from Safeway with dinner and a bus packed with people passed me heading downtown for festivities, music and fireworks. I went last year and wasn't planning on going this year but now... I'm feeling like a party pooper :(

Meh, make your own party - that won't be poopable

1:05 AM
I just tried to install 17.04...talk about "poopable"... during boot "Unknown error code 30" about 6 times.... 5 minutes of purple screen cycling dots and then drops to tty and asks for Ubuntu Login ID and password, which of course don't exist...LOL
About the only good news about this saga is CTRL+ALT+DEL works to reboot.

1:18 AM
is it star something in chat time of year?
9

This is some sort of NYE question I can't fathom. Sorry Seth :p

Messaged a girl , like " Happy New Year !" She's like, "Oh, hey, I've problem with Ubuntu, kernel panic"
Gosh, it feels good to have friends who are computer-savvy like me
3

I tried to post this comment: "Using Conky it will report 1 or 2 running processes out of 300 or so almost all the time. But the other 298 aren't necessarily "sleeping" per sae they just aren't running. A true sleeping process would have issued the "sleep 999.99" command which is unknowable. Many of the other processes are Daemons waiting for an event to occur. Your question can be improved by explaining WHY you need to accomplish what you are asking."
on this review question: askubuntu.com/review/close/660215 but am told "this is an audit". Now I don't know what to do???
@Seth Now I understand you need star +-12 hours New Years UTC for a nifty 2017 hat. You've been starred :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix oh. thanks haha :P

I starred you, Byte and Serg all at once... hope I don't lose all my hats for collusion :p

@ByteCommander is first responder hat specific to posting in chat ?
Because I posted an answer like an hour ago

1:48 AM
read. description.

@Serg yes
post within the first twelve hours and get starred

> First Responder
post a message in chat within ±12 hours of the UTC New Year’s begin that gets starred

Ah, i see

So did you guys get hats or not?

yup!

1:59 AM
I didn't

I didn't get a hat for being starred in chat +- 12 hours UTC day 0 (hint)
but I starred you Serg!

Probably my hat is on the way, just lags

Yeah like my gold medal for 1,000 VTC's will be delayed.

@ByteCommander about the program. I think it might be possible to implement, but I think it would require you to be part of disks group. I'll try to play around with it, will see what alternatives there are.
I don't think it's worth posting a question yet, as I don't have any working solution, but it's up to you

People are really down on 2016 in this chat room. I thought 2016 was a bummer when my Windows 7 died, but then I installed Ubuntu 16.04 and found the great Q&A on AU. I discovered I could help out others too and a wonderful new hobby started up. So 2016 was a great year!

2:05 AM
2016 was alright. It was more like roller-coaster , with whole lots of ups and downs. Best thing for me was that I went to China for the first time, and met my gf, and whole lot of other cool people.
Also the whole rep disaster and recovery thing. I kinda feel much better about it now. Although it took me more time to recover and gain more than I had, I actually have learned a lot in the process
And of course, python and indicators. That's like one of the coolest things I've done on AU so far
So, what's the tag plans for the new year guys ?
I think I'm gonna go into and tags more. And since Kaz apparently challenged me.
I still want my silver, and later maybe gold. I'm not as concerned about it as I was about

Glad you have your [tag:New Years Resolutions] all set up :)

lol
Also, my hat arrived

Oh I see a star above for 2016 not so bad... my hat is in the mail!!! thanks guys :)
Oh if you guys want to know, you get a hat for asking a question and answering it yourself. If the question gets three up votes and the answer gets three up votes you get the hat called "Egotistical Bastrd or something like that. I have my own Q&A with two votes on either side so I'm close: askubuntu.com/questions/866619/how-do-i-setup-keyboard-macros/…

Actually, i could get that one
I have a question which I found solution to, but never got around to posting an answer

Well do it... we'll upvote both sides :)
Note to mods: 3 upvotes for a hat isn't the same as 400 upvotes for rep colllusion

2:20 AM
@JacobVlijm happy new year ;)

Jacob is another Python expert isn't he?

Yep.

Woke up with thw fir
Fireworks, damn touchscreen

Hey Ian... what's the temp in Brazil / Brasil?

I guess it's around 30C right now, not sure

2:31 AM
Well you just got starred in chat so you'll be getting a 2017 hat soon :)
It's minus 7 here... feels like minus 11 according to weather channel.
Help I screwed up on this edit... Not sure how ctrl+alt+printscreen REISUB is supposed to be typed: askubuntu.com/questions/866557/…

Well, the Stack Overflow reputation reset to 0 for 2017 failed...guess what I'm fixing this week! EVERYONE GETS A REP RECALC FOR NEW YEARS!
O_o

Oh, hell naw

Forgot all about that guy... I only remember hot lips.

I watched a few M.A.S.H. episodes way way back when I was like 8 in Czech republic . . . wow

2:40 AM
Mobile Army Surgical Hospital... Russia has an airborne one in Syria just now.
35 people killed in Turkey at a night club celebrating New Years...That's what we should mourne is all the common poeple being slain not the celebrities who died of natural causes that profit by talking about common people sufferage.

Sorry, was on whatsapp for a second, so did the rep on SO reset?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I think I got the first responder hat a little earlier :)

Nope I'm still at .16% for the quarter... when it resets I'll be tied with @Serg for the first time :). haha.

I hope that guy is trolling. I don't mind mining all the rep again, but no thanks

sorry... who is trolling?

Well, I was at less than 300 rep there, kind of hard to find answers I know that 3 other people didn't reply 10x faster there
Maybe because I'm a little slow at finding and answering questions

2:51 AM
@IanC I know what you mean.... many times I'm like "oh I could have answered that one" at the end of the work day when it was already answered 6 hours earlier.

To be honest I'm a bit slow here too, my rep has been stuck at 580 for a while haha

@IanC "Love surfing, programming and chemistry (see the relation? me neither!)" I see the relation. You love surfing AU. In the process of programming you met @Serg and built a chemistry :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix O_o . . . nice

lol wtf

Well you have 10 more points because I upvoted your only two questions which were pretty good. But you should post some answers in order to get more rep.

2:58 AM
Yeah, I probably need to get better at finding questions related to what I know better

@IanC Here's the thing: some questions which are really easy to answer, most people will pass. Or they take time to research . Take for example this one: askubuntu.com/q/866505/295286 Within 12 hours it was posted, no-one tackled , even though it's awfully simple
You also can go through old questions and post your solution. That's what I do a lot

I usually just browse the main page questions, which are often very specific about something I'm not familiar with

I agree with that Ian

I dig up old questions and post alternative solutions with what I know: awk, python, maybe sed or look up how to do something in perl ( I'm not too proficient to write it from head yet). You can do same with Ruby

I think I'll do that, maybe use tags search to get a little more specific on the subject of the questions
Well, though I don't feel like sleeping after waking up to the sound of the sky blowing up, I gotta wake up in about 4 hours to go try to get the first surf of 2017 :)

3:03 AM
Here's a trick Ian.... when a question has no answers, take the title, paste it in google search, strip out the extraneous words or reword them to be more meaningful and press Enter. If an answer pops up rewrite it into AU in simple English. 1/2 the time you'll get an upvote, 10% of the time you'll get accepted.

So, best wishes for this year to come @Serg @WinEunuuchs2Unix, talk to you later!

@WinEunuuchs2Unix and then flag it as a duplicate!

@IanC talk to you later. Happy New Year ! Glad to get to know you in 2016

@KazWolfe Google search engine includes more than Ask Ubuntu :p

Oh, didn't see you there @KazWolfe, same wishes for you too (and everyone online that I can't see on the cellphone chat :p)

3:06 AM
@KazWolfe yes, exactly that. shakes hand virtually

@Serg likewise my friend! Glad I found this place :)

@Serg Let's turn Ask Ubuntu into "Ask Scripting Questions That Just Happen To Be On Ubuntu (And Should Probably Be Migrated To StackOverflow) And Dupevote Everything Else Because Literally Everything Else Has Already Been Asked"

@KazWolfe eh, that won't fly. There were attempts, but there's even post on meta that states all scripting questions are perfectly on-topic here

so i can ask scripting questions if they just happen to be on ubuntu.
so i can ask any question as long as my OS is Ubuntu.
got it.

Oversimplifying . . .but yes, generally, if you're using Ubuntu and what you wanna do is on Ubuntu, then sure - by all means ask

3:11 AM
You are saying "How can I find a file containing ABC" should be a duplicate of "How can I find a file containing XYZ" or "How can I find files > 1 MB" should be a duplicate of "How can I find files > 2 MB beginning with the letter A"

3:21 AM
@KazWolfe Remember how I accept answer for you 3 nights ago? I need one upvote on this question and one up vote on the answer to get a new hat :) askubuntu.com/questions/866619/how-do-i-setup-keyboard-macros/…

you're welcome

Happy new canonical year 2017! /cc @Oli @Rinzwind @fossreedom @muru

Thanks @Serg (if that was you +1'ing)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yes, that was. Also, see my answer - I posted too

Nice answer +1... I read about xdotool a few times but wanted to stray from the herd this time :)

3:36 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix that's actually good question. I wanted to have something for key tags long ago. You just gave me a good reason to work on it

@Serg Thanks... I got sick and tired of typing <kbd> </kbd>

That'll make my answers more productive and faster

Jeez it's only 8:35 pm and some community close to me downtown is setting off fire works like it's July 4th.
must be special for parents with young toddlers I guess...

does @NathanOsman or anyone have any recommendations for NoSQL in go? I just need something simple, preferably with a JSON like syntax.

<kbd></kbd><kbd></kbd><kbd></kbd>

3:39 AM
@Seth MongoDB

<kbd></kbd>+<kbd></kbd>+<kbd></kbd>+<kbd></kbd>+<kbd></kbd>+<kbd></kbd>+<kbd></k‌bd>+<kbd></kbd>+<kbd></kbd>+<kbd></kbd>+

ples no spem

haha I read that wrong at first and had to reread

@KazWolfe I was just looking into that one. Have you used it before?

@Seth I've used it a bit.

3:40 AM

It, for the most part, is just a JSON-like storage structure.
Each DB holds collections, which are just a set of JSON "documents"

oh that sounds perfect. I've already mapped out all the data in JSON, but I decided file operations wasn't a good idea.

There isn't any "enforced" field, save for ID.
and as with JSON, you can always do subdocuments and the like.
The real nice thing with Mongo is that they have amazing documentation.

Mongo kinda looks like javascript

3:44 AM
really, if you're brave, you can express all of a given Mongo database as a JSON file.

@KazWolfe that's always helpful.

the one catch is they "say" it's not JSON, but it really just is, and you can treat it as such.
just note you will always have that unique _id field, but you can set that to whatever.
they call it BSON for some reason.

JASON BOURNE

@WinEunuuchs2Unix what ?

just something to be aware of, @Seth, because it can do some tricky/funny things if you're not expecting it.

@Serg The reason for "BSON".... You never read the Bourne Identity?

@KazWolfe thanks!

I've never read nor watched Bourne movies

3:48 AM
otherwise, mongo is really just a fancy way of ordering and storing JSON documents, and you're okay to treat it as such.

Happy NYE @Windows3.1 and @NathanOsman

@Seth Well, I sometimes just use JSON :D
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Same to you although we've still a few hours to go.

at least that's what I use it for, and it works really well when flatfiles just can't cut it.

Also. Guys.
The cake is a lie.

NO.

3:50 AM
Obligatory XKCD:

NONONONONONONO. BY ACCEPTING THE GIFT, YOU ACCEPTED THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS IMPLIED WITHIN THE GIFT.

@NathanOsman I tricked you I said "NYE" (New Years Eve) and not New Years :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I thought "NYE" was "New Year's Everyone".
@KazWolfe I finished the game :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix tricking mods? that's risky...

Well I guess it's open to interpretation like most things in life :)
@KazWolfe Didn't know Nathan was a mod, I would have asked him to ban you if I knew that :p

3:52 AM
oh, @Seth, watch out for mongodb authentication.
It can be a bit... annoying.
(like, very annoying)
otherwise, glad i can help.
toodles

@Seth also this may be what you're looking for: github.com/boltdb/bolt

@NathanOsman and what, just write it to/from files?

That's if JSON isn't good enough.
@Seth That's what tbot does.
If you're doing it from multiple goroutines, be sure to use a mutex.
That's about the only caveat.

Hmm. Ok.
I might start with that for now and look at moving it to a NoSQL database later. I don't have much time left and I don't need to perform more than 1 write and 1 read I don't think.
well, 1 write and 1 read per page hit. hmm.

@muru could we dupe this askubuntu.com/q/866619/295286 the other way around ? The suggested duplicate has answer that basically says "use autokey" but doesn't give no example. The one I linked is much better IMHO
@Seth Could you please merge the one i linked to muru above ^ and the one he posted as suggested duplicate ?

4:07 AM
@Seth and @Nathan I agree with @Serg ^^^^

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Nathan is chat mod, he doesn't have mod powers over AU questions
( still a cool guy tho, just sayin' )

Oh I didn't know the mod distinctions... thanks for correcting my erroneous ways :)
so if 99% of our chat is off-topic... what does a chat mod do here @NathanOsman :p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix to ban users who disagree with chat mod . . .so be nice to Nathan if you want to keep chatting here
muhahahah

4:23 AM
hi

Hi, @TheXed !

Hey Xed....27 minutes to go for you!

1.5 hours...

It's 9:37 over here, so we got what . . .2 and half ?

4:41 AM
Yup... you and I are in the same time zone
Sorry Xed forgot Chicago was Central Time Zone.... thought it was Eastern Time Zone for some reason.

What is wrong with Maria Carey?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix no worries.

Maria Carey only wants é±¼ for Christmas
By the way, guys, here's little something for you for new year
python -c "print ''.join([chr(i) for i in [72, 97, 112, 112, 121, 32, 78, 101, 119, 32, 89, 101, 97, 114]])"

4:59 AM
@Seth If by page hit you mean HTTP requests - those are handled by separate goroutines.
So you may need to be careful.
If writes can happen during requests, you need mutexes.
(P.S. what's the plural of "mutex" anyway - "mutices"? :P)

oh by the way...everyone...consider this your warning...there will be a leap second added to the end of 2016.

OMG, we're gonna have an extra second of 2016

@NathanOsman only 1 write will ever happen. Once the file is created it will never need to be modified, just read.
So I think I'm fine?

2016 is almost over and they're prolonging it with a #leapsecond?
@Seth You're good then.

@Serg yup...I wonder what hero 2016 will take from us in that last second of 2016.

5:06 AM
@NathanOsman you're awesome. I'm not good at this programming stuff, but I would never have gotten this far without your help :)

Glad to help.
I try to be the person I wish I would have had when I first started.

(That being said, I do appreciate learning a lot of things the hard way before discovering better methods.)
GitBook? Hey, that's pretty cool.

By the words of modly lord Seth I shall grant the title of "AU Hero" to Sir Nathan Osman. You can now claim your shining armor and knight sword.
Oh, that go-lang book article is written by chinese folks, they even have QQ group

Isn't that the guy that made the Beego framework?
It looks quite nice, though I tend to stay away from larger frameworks in Go.

5:26 AM
@Serg eww python2

@KazWolfe wat ? Python 2 is OK. Still better many other languages out there

But not Python 3 :D

but mah print()

You can still do that in Py2, BTW.

but py2 also allows print "x"
which is wrong.

5:28 AM
from __future__ import print_function
That will do it.

Why is it wrong ?
Also, what Nathan said

It isn't. It's just deprecated now.

you're calling a function without standard function syntax. it just feels wrong.

Meh, OK. Let me make it better for you, one sec
	python -c "import sys;sys.stdout.write(''.join([chr(i) for i in [72, 97, 112, 112, 121, 32, 78, 101, 119, 32, 89, 101, 97, 114]]))"

unnecessary.

5:29 AM
But it's a function

python -c "print(''.join([chr(i) for i in [72, 97, 112, 112, 121, 32, 78, 101, 119, 32, 89, 101, 97, 114]]))"

NAh, that's boring. Add the from future import to that

why? it's python3.

By the way, you guys figured out what it does , right ?

and i think python2 supports print() OOTB, right?

5:31 AM
well I think I have had my last beer of 2016...now waiting for it to be 2017 so I can have my first beer of 2017

Lol , years may change, but beer is timeless (?)

Well it is 11:31 pm there Xed

10:31 here

21:32 here

5:32 AM
@Pissedofflayman and happy new year to you, too !!!

22:32 here

Thanx @Serg \o/

I am wondering whether or not I should spend night productively, or simply watch livestreams, or maybe drink a few shots of the whiskey I have still lying from November in my closet

23:22 here
@Serg whiskey...easy....

Well . .. might as well . . .

5:34 AM
@Zanna Thanks you :)

Sometimes the alcohol makes me productive...as well...but no usually

inb4 2017 sucks

well, I'm not trying to compete with your guys problems, but my problem is I have a couple inches left in my bottle of Lagavulin. Should I finish it?

@Hizqeel Thanks :)

@Chan-HoSuh that's a problem?
god i'd love to be in your shoes, where that's your only problem.

5:36 AM
@Chan-HoSuh yes.
Don't let the Lagavulin go to waste (what is that anyways?)

single malt scotch

Lagavulin distillery is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Lagavulin on the island of Islay, Scotland. The standard Lagavulin single malt is 16 years old (43%), though they regularly release a 12-year-old cask strength variety, a Distiller's edition finished in Pedro Ximénez casks, and 25- and 30-year-old varieties. Lagavulin is produced by United Distillers & Vintners, which in turn is owned by Diageo plc. It is marketed under their Classic Malts brand. The name of Lagavulin is an anglicization of the Gaelic lag a'mhuilin, meaning "hollow by the mill". == The distillery == ...
can't decide if i should take my good headphones to work tomorrow.

@KazWolfe well, most people drinking scotch have multiple problems

Here's to 2016 and to AskUbuntu

5:40 AM
or if i should just buy new/better headphones.
@Serg your text is massive.

@KazWolfe because I'm pretty blind

also holy crap that picture.
i can see the pixels of your monitor in the picture itself o.o

You can ? O_o I can't really tell.
It's OnePlus Two camera by the way

also, most annoying thing ever: visual gaps between pixels.

Mmmm, that bourbon whiskey went quite smooth. Jim Beam, Kentucky Straight

5:44 AM
i should replay the submachine series too.
those were good games.

@Serg you have a OP2?

@TheXed yeah , I've had it since like November or October of last year

I think that is about when I got mine...

the thing is that my friend who has account on oneplus site had an offer, and she messaged me like " hey, do you want a phone ? i got a good deal on it". At the time i was using BLU , fairly cheap one, and my old samsung s3 got stolen. So i was like ok

@Serg yeah there not bad phones...

5:52 AM
I'm personally happy with it. Especially that it's got big screen . Typing on that miniscule BLU was a pain

I still prefer my Lumia 950 because the hardware is leaps and bounds better...
but Andriod obviously has it's advantages over Windows 10 Mobile.

Nokia always had good hardware
Lol i remember how much abuse my cousin's old Nokia could withstand

@Serg I have dropped mine twice on a treadmill and it went flying off across the room and not even a scratch...

Nice

My phone did a four foot face plant on concrete floor at work yesterday. Luckily I had the tempered glass screen protector installed.

5:59 AM
glass screen protectors are nice.
never getting a phone without one ever again.

I have tempered glass screen, but so far havent installed it. Been like 6 month already
Gonna make some tea, i guess. Bourbon will be saved for after midnight

still waiting for the next-gen oneplus though, hopefully that thing will be as good as the predecessors.

Oh yeah that was with no screen protector or case...

hmm... should i play more no man's sky tonight or nah

If you see typo s I'm on my phone and can't read screen :p

6:02 AM
@Zanna happy new year, Zanzan. Wish you more and more rep and awesome answers in 2017 !

@WinEunuuchs2Unix well better then my problem...I might be drunk...I am not sure...

zanzan's her nickname?
does she like that? lol

@KazWolfe I asked for permission first
I just like how it sounds

askubuntu.com/a/575761/61218 this answer deserve more votes. It was -1 before my vote

@Anwar to be fair, that answer needs more explanation, but that's at least my opinion. Plus, question is tagged gnome-terminal and says "default Ubuntu terminal" , but Kubuntu uses konsole, not gnome-terminal

6:15 AM
Oh. Thanks.
I found that while searching for Konsole though

6:38 AM
well it's 1:40
just finished watching the Matrix Trilogy
time to maybe sleep

@Zacharee1 HAPPEH NEW YEAR, huehuehue

huehuehue'

:D
11:45 here
Well, maybe it's time I go and turn on the TV.
But I don't have champagne

urgh

Beer is "Proletarian Champagne"
Do you have beer? @Serg

6:47 AM
i have a big lump in the head which hurts
i've been out cold for an hour
and yes, i do have a new hat
2017 BBY!

do you have both your kidneys, your liver and your morovangian's organ?

not sure what morovagin's organ means, but yeah

I just made that up

lol

@Fabby bottle saved from like 2 weeks ago

6:49 AM
i just feel PENCIL tired right now

time to go open champagne . . . talk to you in 2017 guys
<3

have a great time gettting drunk

XDDD

Happy MMXVII! @Serg
3

6:50 AM
lubuntu off a USB seems borked. Which is amusing since the live install off the same usb key worked fine ._.

time to get me old icy packy

I should just install it on the hard drive, but it dosen't like the direct, non partitioned haiku install I'm loathe to nuke

function PainError, event big lump getting iced
This seriously hurts like HELL

use a bag of peas.

pea-tastic
error type NoPeasInHouse, aborting

6:55 AM
@JourneymanGeek Works here... I've had problems in the past with really cheap USB drives though.

(im stupid)

@Fabby oh, its a decent drive
I should just consider swapping in another drive and/or nuking haiku

are you running a DE on the USB?

@Fabby literally booted into lubuntu, ran the installer to the second drive
its trying to fsck the fresh install and freezes there
Maybe I should just wait
;p
