@Zacharee1 dupety dupe

but not of that one

Yeah I meant... oh never mind, too sleepy to talk sense
But since it's midnight I dropped that other vote to your amd post
falls asleep

good evening!!
@Zanna sleeping though the new years eve and going surf right after dawn was the best idea! What a great day to start the year :D
I ended up waking up with the fireworks, but after a lot of effort I got back to sleep :p
while I was going to the spot I surf around 5:30, I saw how the beach had lots of trash on it, which to my surprise was apparently all cleaned by the time I was coming back, but made me think I'd probably be on a bad vibe watching the turists (and people from here too) throwing trash around

12:24 AM
\o/

an moderatoar!

man, I'm so stoked today, completely physically broke too, but stoked :)

@StefanoPalazzo are you here?
This user posted the same NAA on two separate posts

What the heck. Nougat got rid of vibrate???

@NathanOsman wut

I press volume down and it doesn't do anything.
It used to turn on vibrate.

o_O
uhhh

I must be missing something obvious...

1:04 AM
it still works for me on LG, CM and EOS
does OP build in a stock recovery?

Aha.
So it isn't my imagination.

@NathanOsman install LOS :P

Kill Apple with fire... askubuntu.com/a/866925/518562

@NathanOsman works fine for me on 7.1.1

@Seth OOS killed it for some reason

1:09 AM
o_O

I can't get vibrate. Argh!
All I want is to switch on vibrate.

@NathanOsman oh, looks like even if WIND did have normal Canadian bands, the OP3 wouldn't support it very well.

Oh?
It's not my day :(

OP3 has 1/2/4/5/7/12/17/30
Most carriers in Canada use 4 and 13
But there's also 29
It does still have 5, 7 and 12/17, which are useful for Bell and Telus
wait wat
the OP3 supports CDMA o_O
@NathanOsman I'm telling you. Get a V20 :D

man, I'm so physically exhausted even coding right now sounds like a challenge haha

1:15 AM
lol

@NathanOsman what about the little switch on the side?

@Zacharee1 that's useless to me.
@Seth that still works.

@NathanOsman CDMA is basically just useless

@NathanOsman for vibrate?

@Seth no, for what it did before.

1:23 AM
-.-

lol

@Zacharee1 +1

@Seth you should CV highly-voted posts

lolwhut?

1:41 AM
@Zacharee1 my friend is making me play minecraft
but

Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine.

using OpenJDK 8

uh

uh what?

no idea
I only see Java 9 stuff for that error
have you rebooted?

1:57 AM
@Zacharee1 got it working with java 8

2:21 AM
@Seth you watch Pocketnow right?

why is LTE so fractured?
@TheXed you shot that?

No, I took it's picture O.o

...
what ISO was that taken at?

@Zacharee1 900

hmm

2:40 AM
@Zacharee1 This was one of the easiest audits ever, lol askubuntu.com/review/late-answers/660567

lol

@Zacharee1 you have a problem with my flying bird?

it's a little noisy ;P

I know...

900 isn't all that high though, so it confused me

2:46 AM
I think everytime I export it from darktable it adds noise..I don't know why...

try RawTherapee
or can you email me the RAW?

what is your email?

wander1236@gmail.com

time to spam

lesigh

2:50 AM
K, 9999 messages sent

@Zacharee1 yeah, why?

did you watch it when Michael Fisher did the reviews?
@Serg thxm8

I emailed the RAW file to you.

@NathanOsman any idea why the go server returns 404 for my JS files?
I can't find any reason for it to.. other than not having the slightest clue what I'm doing :D

@TheXed Just out of curiosity, why would you do a 1/4000th shutter, and then ISO 900? Why not ISO 80 with a longer shutter?

3:00 AM
there's a lot to learn . . . a lot . . .

@AndroidDev because I forgot to change the shutter speed

lol
NEF? o_O

@TheXed Oh, and then the camera automatically selected a high ISO because of the fast shutter speed? I see.

Yes.
Wait, I was in AP mode...

I once did a night shot with a 5 minute shutter on ISO 80, and it turned out absolutely stunning.

3:04 AM
Shutter speed would have been selected on its own...
hmm...

Which means they messed up their algorithm

@TheXed there is a ton of weird noise in the sky

I almost had an amazing shot of a bird with blurred mountains in the background one time, but unfortunately I had my shutter too slow and the bird was blurry :(

I've never seen that, even with crazy high ISO

It is pretty bad

3:08 AM
@Zacharee1 I don't know what happened...

neither do I o_O

And 900 isn't that that high of an ISO.

that's what I was thinking

overexposed?

Considering Canon's new cameras can do 6k or something insane like that

3:10 AM
@Seth it doesn't look it
@AndroidDev I think mine has 12800
so I went crazy with the noise reduction in RawTherapee:
I can't denoise the sky though

@Zacharee1 I did the same with darktable...

@TheXed seems like RT is a bit more aggressive

@Zacharee1 Ooops, I meant 26k... (I'm on mobile)

ah

@Seth back now.
Can I see the code where you are making the files accessible from the server?

3:14 AM
@TheXed uploading image...

@Zacharee1 yeah, the EOS 70D can do up to 25600

@TheXed I think RT and DT might just not be able to handle NEF, because that's what Lightroom imports ^

So it is RT and DT's problem, not the image itself?

I think so
hang on

@Zacharee1 That one seems a bit better, but there's still a good amount of noise

3:17 AM
@AndroidDev yeah, but it's really different
That's with NR on 38 and Detail at 100
wow, that sensor is exactly 24MP?

@Zacharee1 I suppose that could be true, because the jpeg that doesn't look that noisy...

I have it set to shoot jpg + raw

ah

I do that too

3:20 AM
well the camera does do processing with the JPG

24.2MP

but it does kind of look like NEF isn't that well understood :p

For some reason, the jpeg always looks better than the RAW
Until I manually tweak it

@TheXed the photo you gave me is 6000*4000. What happened to the .2? :p

@Zacharee1 I don't know...

3:20 AM
@AndroidDev because the JPG is processed, and the RAW is just info

the specs say 24.2

weird

My camera has a 12.1MP sensor, and it generates 4000x3000

Megapixels are a myth anyways :-P

well

3:22 AM
shrugs

@NathanOsman Well that might be the problem. I've only got 1 route, but I kinda figured the HTML page would be able to access its JS files
similar to apache

One of these days I should buy a DSLR... I hate that my viewfinder is a screen. It's terrible in bright light.
But, the CHDK gives me a of extra features.

	http.HandleFunc("/page", pageHandler)
	fmt.Println(http.ListenAndServe(":8080", nil))
}

func pageHandler(w http.ResponseWriter, r *http.Request) {
	curr := parseJSON()
	t, err := template.ParseFiles("templates/page.html")
	if err != nil {
		fmt.Println(err)
	}
	t.Execute(w, curr)
}

@Zacharee1 @TheXed If either of you have a Canon camera, you definitely should look into the CHDK. It's amazing.

@AndroidDev I have a Nikon.

3:28 AM
doesn't have my model @AndroidDev

@Zacharee1 :( Actually, they only have a "beta" release for my model, but I've yet to come across any show stopping bugs

well seeing as I have a DSLR....

@Zacharee1 Yeah, but being able to run scripts is huge. There is a motion detection script that's fast enough to capture lightning!

yeah but I don't have a PowerShot

Plus, it comes with Tetris... How can you go wrong there, lol

doesn't look like spam

doesn't look like it... looking at links

but i am not sure what exactly is being asked

@Fabby well hello there

3:37 AM
I think he wants an opinion on the advice in links

well then POB

there may be a dupe target for this

mebeh

@edwinksl dupe it

3:39 AM
@Zacharee1 Not to go on and on, but look what this person got with that script: flickr.com/photos/philipws/2606871962

> Please do respond if you are familiar with pips. If you don't know what pips is, like I don't, please just do nothing.
why do people do that? ^

just a defensive response to the downvotes

@edwinksl Good one...

Uploading another picture for your criticism :-P

@TheXed :D

@edwinksl added my close vote to yours...

ah thanks

Yours would be appreciated here

it is not the perfect dupe target but good enough
@Fabby done

Thanks!
And thanks again!

Q: Strange askubuntu edit post behaviour

GeorgeIn the course of trying to edit a post that had its edit button active not greyed out I experienced something strange. When I clicked on the edit button (which as stated above was not greyed out) this happened, I was taken to a blank new page with the notice " There is a pending suggested edit ...

grab it if you want to use CVs in meta :p

@Zacharee1 did you see the picture?
I am eager to hear the awful things you have to say about it :-P

@edwinksl Voted!

@TheXed sorry, it got buried in the question stuff

@Zacharee1 no problem
@Zacharee1 need the link again?

3:50 AM
@TheXed wow. That one came out really nice actually! There's some noise, but since the picture itself is busy, it works

@Fabby nice thanks again

YW...

@Fabby I was just explaining to the OP why I thought it might be spam, since they accused me of slander basically

@Zacharee1 you are letting me down, you are supposed to be critical...not positive :-P

I'm letting you down by bringing you up

3:51 AM
@Zacharee1 That's what I confirmed:

@TheXed critical goes negative and positive. It's just without bias

It looks like SPAM but isn't: no viagra, skin care or software

@Fabby it looked like you thought I was still trying to say it's spam
also, @anyone who downvoted, you should probably remove it

@Zacharee1 fair enough...

I edited the question

3:53 AM
You'd think we're a bunch of unwashed, impotent bunch of people in need of Windows software if you value us by the SPAM we get!
:D :D :D
@Zacharee1 purfect...

Wait...whose impotent?

well, the SPAM we get is for skin care, viagra and software...

who's* :p

@Fabby I would have you know sir, I bath somewhat more than once a week

@JourneymanGeek Tell that to the SPAMmers, not me! :P
;)

looking...

@Seth Sorry.
I disappeared again :D
But I'm back now.

no problem!

And you've probably figured it out by now, but that doesn't work.

@JourneymanGeek hey, that's your dog!!!
(or a lookalike)

3:58 AM
@Seth you need something like this:

@Fabby I think you're getting confused by the beard.

srv.mux.PathPrefix("/static").Handler(
    http.FileServer(http.Dir("/var/www")),
)

That's me!
(Washing the dog)

:D Good one...
Dog doesn't seem to like blow drying!

4:00 AM
Smoke!!! BRB

its too strong. ;p

My cat is 1337 haxor - she sat on mom's laptop, and turned of sound, locked the screen, and turned on caps lock.
She totally knows how to make people puzzled about password not working

Don't most login managers warn you when CAPS LOCK is on?

@NathanOsman hm, ok.

Are you using mux?

4:03 AM
They do, but most people don't pay attention. Win 10 does that I think. Win 7 , at least on my university computers, doesn't

i have been warning people that cats are our overlords
you all better pay attention to 'em cats

@NathanOsman no, I'm not. Frankly I'm out of my league here. Just messing around and hacking it together.
What is srv a reference too?

That's cool.

Looks like an abbreviation for server.

It's an *http.Server.

4:05 AM
that makes sense.

If you want to get a somewhat helpful example, tbot may be of use.

@NathanOsman yeah I've been using it. Had trouble figuring this one out though because I wasn't sure what I was looking for.

@Zacharee1 bokeh! flic.kr/p/Px7ZBJ

@NathanOsman ah, you rolled your own server struct?

Yes, but it is almost the same.
The only difference is Start() and Stop().
The original server type doesn't provide a Stop()-ish function.
So I added one.

4:07 AM
That's cool.
@NathanOsman so are you overriding an existing struct somewhere then?
ah, in net/http.

root@rpi2:~ # stat /sys
87 433 lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 796029813 11 "Sep 29 13:01:51 2016" "Sep 29 13:01:51 2016" "Sep 29 13:01:51 2016" "Sep 29 13:01:51 2016" 32768 0 0 /sys
root@rpi2:~ # cd /sys
/sys: No such file or directory.

Sort of. Here's the entirety of the type:

go home freebsd, you're drunk

You'll notice that it has an anonymous member:
type AsyncServer struct {
    http.Server
    ...
That means "everything in http.Server should be included in this type".
...and then it adds a couple of its own methods.

oh that's what that is. Got it.
go syntax still confuses me a little, coming from java/C#/python.

4:12 AM
You'll notice the other members of the type are of the form "[name] [type]" but that one lacks a name.

yeah

The exact term for this in Go is "composition".

4:26 AM
@NathanOsman This makes me think I should go back and read/watch some more before continuing.

4:53 AM
@Seth @Seth: yup, an attempt... :P ;-) And as a famous philosopher in a galaxy far far away once said: "Do. Or, do not. There is no try."

@Fabby um, no.

Grinning, Ducking and Running....

You're allowed to say "try".

hi

Just because the word "try" is in the answer doesn't make it not an answer.. Words themselves don't mean much.
I thought we had a meta post about this..

4:54 AM
To me "try" needs to go into a comment.
Do, shall, must, will go into answers...

@Fabby Just because the word "try" is in an answer?

(but then: I'd rather have nothing at all then something that doesn't fit perfectly

There is no try, there is only do, or do not.

@Seth No, because there was "try" in the answer and a comment by the OP "It doesn;t work"

@Fabby well that's not really how SE works.. although it does come close sometimes. Either way, your comment was flagged citing some help center articles.

4:55 AM
@Fabby Obligatory Yoda quote: "Do or do not, there is no try"

@Serg see 5 lines above...

@Fabby Answers don't have to be 100% guaranteed to work. You post an answer when you think you have a solution. Most of us regulars are just overly cautious and leave comments first.

too lazy to count. I'll write a script to find that post

:D :D :D
@Seth Let me think about that...

3 mins ago, by TheXed
There is no try, there is only do, or do not.

4:57 AM
Am I overly cautious?

To some extend Seth is right too: sometimes you can be sure you have a solution but it's not always guaranteed to work, especially with hardware questions

Yeah, probably... I've seen too many servers being blown up by "Let's try this"

Not sure how relevant they are though.

@Fabby that would fall under "do not"

I ask questions, tell people to try stuff out in the comments and then when I'm sure I post a final comment: "Answer coming up!!!" ;-)
@TheXed :D :D :D

4:59 AM
@Fabby you might post a meta question about it, it could probably be discussed :)

@TheXed yeah, that's most of the time after the RCA

Funny because it is true...

@NathanOsman As usual, the very next portion of the video series I was watching starts discussing mux -.-
sometimes I think I cripple myself lol.

@NathanOsman queztion: i recall you were making raspberry-controlled Christmas lights last year. Do you have a "documentation" on that ?

I really badly wanted to write a blog article about that very thing.

5:08 AM
well . . .technically it's already 2 years ago, i think . . .

Unfortunately I haven't done it yet.
BUT.
I am glad to help answer any questions.
Are you looking for help with the electrical aspects or the programming aspects?

The only question I have is did you use GPIO library or just /sys ?

I used a Go package that I wrote :D
It reads and writes to the /sys/class/gpio/gpio[xx] special files.

@NathanOsman how do you interface the lights to the Rpi?

Solid state relay connected via the GPIO pins.

5:10 AM
4 channel relay , iirc

@TheXed starred! Just pinged one of my co-workers that we have to make one of those with our ugly faces in it and the company logo.

@Fabby lol

So . . . my stupid self just learned that you don't need any library, and actually use stuff under /sys for GPIO. After almost a year of having raspberry i am discovering it's got all i need already. dammit , but also yay.

There may be a better way but /sys has worked for me :D

5:12 AM
I really wanna go back to embedded programming this year. I feel like there's a void to be filled in.

Q: Am I becoming an old curmudgeon?

FabbyFrom a discussion in chat, opening to a wider audience: I tend to flag answers with "Try this" or "Use Y because X doesn't work" as "Not an answer" to avoid having to downvote and lose precious points (I need to get back to 30K to get the stats, after that, I'm not interested in rep any more and...

@Seth -----^ Feel free to reply "No, you're not becoming an old curmudgeon, you are an old curmudgeon..." :-)

2 hours later…
7:35 AM
Still patiently waiting for the 2017 community ads post...

@IanC wonderful to hear :)

8:27 AM
@Zanna whatever answer someone comes with to guess as to what's in the mind of Amazon, I'll open a ticket with them to ask. I'm curious now. I would naively expect AWS documentation to be better than edwinks. Clearly they need to pay him $. — Thufir 1 min ago
I think guessing what's in the mind of Amazon is off-topic...

lol

9:01 AM
@edwinksl ^^

9:55 AM
Good morning.

morning

My Hacktoberfest 2016 T-Shirt and stickers arrived today, finally! \o/
(CC @NathanOsman ^^ Yours too?)
They really shipped it via air mail from Ohio to Germany.
But given that I earned it at the end of October, they probably used a pigeon to carry it over the ocean.

10:35 AM
@Zanna lolwut i can't tell if that is a criticism or a back-handed compliment
don't really care tbh but it is interesting to get called out in a question lol

I'm not sure but it made me laugh

muru's answer is on point though
do upvote

I did!

as an example of what damage sudo pip install of arbitrary packages on PyPI could do, consider typosquatting reddit.com/r/netsec/comments/4n4w2h/…
link to original post seems dead for me

10:58 AM
oooh yeah, that is an excellent example
