user136984
@rancho: When did you reach 1k and are you clicking on the number?
Where to click?
Just now I reached
That's what is all was for
user136984
It can sometimes take a while to register you've reached it, but when I reached it I just didn't know what to do. You have to click the number between the up and down voting arrows.
Nice thing..wow.Now I am 1k

@terdon: You don't happen to know anything about debug symbols do you?
user136984
Or know anyone who does? Because I'm having some issues here with it...
user136984
I need to make a backtrace for gnome-shell...
@ParanoidPanda Not really no, sorry.
user136984
Ok, that's fine...
user136984
If anyone does know then please ping me. :)
user136984
11:27
Oh dear... I was just texting somebody and then I realised that auto-correct had randomly (I mean I don't know what it 'corrected' to that because there simply should not have been a word there) inserted a racist word in there... I realised this after I had sent the message as I didn't have time to read it through before I sent it... Eek... So I hope they've received my explanation... Sheesh, why does auto-correct know such words? Even I didn't know it, I had to look it up...
user136984
They probably won't know the word either, so I hope they don't look it up...
@edwinksl thanks to you i was able to run my code
user136984
But then this phone does randomly send strange messages it types while it's in my pocket... I mean it manages to go through some quite complex steps in unlocking itself and then sending messages like "beans" and "carrots" (probably thanks to auto-correct) to all my contacts... I mean, you have to select each contact with a tick box and scroll down the list, then you have to press 2 more buttons before selecting "Send" from a list! How on earth does it manage that?! :D
user136984
I'm still not sure what networking settings it changed last time it had a crazy session in my pocket... I think every time I step the phone's touchscreen is touched.
user136984
But I mean it manages to press a button, drag a slider, navigate to messages and then do what I said, it also has to bring the keyboard up, how on earth does it manage all that for god sake?!
user136984
11:31
It's weird... :D
11:45
@ParanoidPanda What word? I'm curious now.
user136984
@terdon: I'm not going to mention the word, but it's a rude way of calling Vietnamese people according to DuckDuckGo.
Oh? Please do mention it, we can delete it afterwards. Is it something relatively benign such as viet or is there a truly offensive word for them?
user136984
@terdon: I've deleted the message now, but I think it was something like "viet", I first read it as "veal". DDG said it was rude, is that not such a bad word then (I think it probably was that)?
Việt? eh
user136984
@dino: That looks about right...
user136984
11:52
So it's not rude then or...? I'm just a bit worried as my friend is not getting back to me...
@ParanoidPanda Well, it's not nice, but it isn't very, very offensive AFAIK. I think it's somewhere near frog for the French, but I might be wrong.
user136984
It turns out that when I delete messages they go into "Deleted messages", but then I have to delete them from there too... So yes, that was it.
I don't think it is that bad of a word.
I have lots of friends from Vietnam and they get called 'the viets' and no one bats an eye.
user136984
Ok, maybe DDG just has it wrong then...
user136984
I hope so anyway, the guy I wrote to is very offendable.
11:55
@dino Yeah, that's my experience as well.
Calling Asians as Chinks or Japs would be terribad though.
Dictionary.com considers it "informal" not "offensive".
@dino For some reason, I think that chink is way more offensive than Jap. Well, not if you call a Chinese person jap, of course.
user136984
Japan is an incorrect name anyway. The actual name of the country for them is "Nihon", we just named it Japan for some reason.
@terdon They are offensive to varying degrees.
Yes
user136984
11:59
Should we really be using these words in chat though?
What's wrong? We are not using it in offensive context.
@ParanoidPanda We aren't using them, we are mentioning them, there's a huge distinction.
The use–mention distinction is a foundational concept of analytic philosophy, according to which it is necessary to make a distinction between using a word (or phrase) and mentioning it, and many philosophical works have been "vitiated by a failure to distinguish use and mention". The distinction is disputed by non-analytic philosophers. The distinction between use and mention can be illustrated for the word cheese: Use: cheese is derived from milk. Mention: "cheese" is derived from the Old English word "cyse". The first sentence is a statement about the substance called "cheese"; it uses the word...
Note that I put the words in italics for precisely that reason.
user136984
Well, it just highly reminds me of this guy I know who likes to give me 'examples' of very offensive words when the people it is likely to offend are walking past us. I have given him no indication that I would want to ever use those words, so I think that it's just an excuse for him to use them because he likes to.
user136984
Not at all suggesting that you have the same motives as him or there are any real similarity between the two situations, just bringing back bad memories of angry passers-by.
You started the topic..
12:02
But I pushed him to mention the word.
user136984
Yes, I just wanted to rant about my phone, I never intended to tell you what it was...
At least you know DDG is unreliable.
user136984
Well, I already knew that, it just confirms it more so...
user136984
And I edited one of my sentences and destroyed the grammar accidentally after misreading a little way ahead...
What did you search for? I tried viet and define viet and neither turned up anything suggesting it's offensive in the first few results.
user136984
12:08
@terdon: I searched for "viet definition".
user136984
I don't know, I find that the results are rather sporadic sometimes.
Still didn't find anything suggesting it was offensive. Weird

Q: Obscure links to promote service

anonymous2There's an interesting question that was posted recently. On face vaule, it looks like a valid post. It asks a valid ubuntu question, but if you look a bit closer, it has a link to some real estate software site on the t in the word installed in the first line of the post. My question is, what...

user136984
This situation slightly reminds me though of about a week ago when someone's phone auto-corrected my name to Nokia... :D
user136984
12:45
My name's spelling is not at all similar! :D
12:56
panda, nokia. Both 5 letters and kinda endangered.

Vim 8 is coming out!
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/vim/vim/master/runtime/doc/version8.txt
I need to learn how to use the vim text editor.
nano vs vim.
@HenryWHHackv2.0 Don't bother, learn emacs instead. It's much easier to start using it.
I only know :wq in vim .. less steps in nano ..ctrl+x ..y
And, although some poor ignorant fools people have a different opinion, it is the best editor in the world.
uh oh, editor war = started

I use Vim because it is what was introduced to me in my first programming job. Before then, I only did Python and its own IDE, and Java with Eclipse.

If i started out with Atom or emacs, I am sure I would like those just as much

Hi @all.
@terdon Hi..
Remember me?
Hey
Of course!
13:33
Congrats for becomming AU mod..
I wanna see you mod powers.. Pls remove the duplicate mark as well as the delete votes from this askubuntu.com/q/428772/202806 question, since I don't find any answer regarding apt-cache policy command on the linked question.
Lol
some copied my answer and posted it to that linked question..
I can't remove the delete votes. I could only delete and then undelete. This is the classic problem where some people seem to believe that duplicates are somehow harmful for the site and need to be deleted. Sigh.
I wish they wouldn't do that.
I'm still getting upvotes for that answer.. Maybe that particular question would be shown on the first page of google search results.
As for the dupe, it seems like a valid dupe @AvinashRaj. There is a perfectly fine apt-cache policy answer on the other one as well.
@AvinashRaj Yes, so?
Dupes are still around to be voted on. I agree that that shouldn't be deleted, but apart from that, everything seems to be in order.
13:38
@terdon two answers exists but they are posted after to me..
@AvinashRaj Um. Yes, but again, so? They don't seem to be plagiarising you.
Whatever it is, but pls don't delete that question...
No, it certainly shouldn't be deleted. If it ends up being deleted anyway, please ping me and I'll undelete.
cool..
Bye... see u..
@AvinashRaj I deleted and undeleted the post. That has cleared the pending delete votes. It should stay there indefinitely now.
13:53
darn it
The Tab S3 is coming out
Sept 2
you will buy that too ? Samsung fan
@CodeX probably not
if it's just going to have a newer processor and no real new features, then there's no point
I upvoted
@Zacharee1 not me
@edwinksl I would hope not
then I might GASP have to STOP making answers

but that would mean you would not reach 10k and gain nice superpowers

user136984
@terdon Well, then I am a proud user of vim, never needed nor got my head round emacs. :P
user136984
If I needed it I would read the documentation, but I don't need it so...
user136984
Is it really that hard? I've heard about a lot of people complaining...
user136984
14:15
Wait, you're saying it's easy and hard? What?
user136984
You know, I had odd dreams about this place... Bad ones in fact... :D

A: What's the difference between - (one hyphen) and -- (two hyphens) in a command?

Rinzwind -- is the long name version - is the short name version Have a look at man ls and some of the options: -a, --all : do not ignore entries starting with . -A, --almost-all : do not list implied . and .. -b, --escape : print C-style escapes for nongraphic characters -B, --ignore-backups : do no...

two totally different interpretations of the question, both 7 upvotes :D
well it is rinzwind AND heemayl, kings of quality answers
you are 8 now
14:30
@ParanoidPanda No, it's much much easier to get up and running with emacs than with vim. You can use emacs the first time you touch it, while with vim, you need to first understand editing modes and figure out that you can't make changes until you change modes.
That graphic is saying that vim has a very, very steep learning curve at the beginning, but once you're past that, learning new things is easy. Emacs on the other hand (always according to that image) is easier to start with but you can always learn more and more and more, some of which is hard and some is easy.
user136984
Ah... Well, isn't emacs a GUI application?
vimscript is trash btw
@ParanoidPanda Huh? No, of course not! It can be, but it doesn't need to be.
Just like vim/gvim
we can't use something which has 'mac' in its name
j/k
user136984
Well, I still prefer vim.
14:34
I don't see why not, the whole unity desktop seems to be trying to imitate mac :P
I will try emacs now
user136984
I like things which are hard to use at first. It deters people from following my ways. :P
@ParanoidPanda Don't tell anyone I said so, but vim is also an excellent editor. It's down to personal choice, as it so often is.
is emacs an OS though, that's the real question
user136984
@edwinksl: No, it's a text editor... Unless there is an OS with the same name.
14:35
@edwinksl Depends on your definition of an OS.
@ParanoidPanda really my friend ? so why then did you drop qemu / libvirt at once after not succeeding on the first attempt ? ? ? :D :D :D
It's a text editor, but it is so extensible that I wouldn't be surprised if someone had turned it into an OS. I know people who do everything (including reading emails, system configuration, shell work) in emacs.
user136984
@cl-netbox: Well, I thought I was doing everything completely wrong there and I couldn't find any documentation so... But seems all is well now and I'm using it again.
@ParanoidPanda no documentation ? what about this -> libvirt.org/index.html ? ... and this -> wiki.qemu.org/Manual ? :)
user136984
14:40
@cl-netbox: Well, I guess I didn't look very far then...
user136984
I like to just sit back and eat bamboo. :P
@cl-netbox he is Panda he can say anything
@ParanoidPanda here you have an extensive documentation -> qemu.weilnetz.de/qemu-doc.html ! :)
@ParanoidPanda so cake and chocolate are sold out in London ? :D
@CodeX he once was known as the BIGGEST FAT PANDA of AU ! :D :D :D right @ParanoidPanda ? :D :D :D
@cl-netbox Lol
user136984
Was I? :D
14:44
@ParanoidPanda aaahhh ... he is back !!! :D
user136984
@cl-netbox Yes, I ate it all... ;P
@ParanoidPanda this must have the consequence that now you are the BIGGEST and FATTEST PANDA of the whole SE universe ! :D
user136984
@cl-netbox: And full of Natto! ;D

user136984
@cl-netbox: No, I sat on my LiveUSB and crunch... My plan is to do it this coming weekend instead... And this time I think I will keep my USBs in a safer place than on my chair... :D
@ParanoidPanda oh ... :D :D :D ... I wish you good luck ! :)
user136984
Thanks! Hope I don't have to delay in longer because I do something else crazy! ;D
16:00
Use a CD @ParanoidPanda :P
@ParanoidPanda something more crazy than installing arch ? :D :D :D
@Seth or a huge amount of floppy disks ... :D

So that's exciting, to have my name and things in the changelog.
@ParanoidPanda Nice! Well done you!
user136984
Thanks :)
user136984
16:28
@edwinksl: Can't tell you that or you'd be able to find and email me. But if you manage to track it down yourself I'll give you a chocolate cookie. :P
i will get my choc cookie from you
user136984
But it's somewhere in the Yakkety proposed channel.
user136984
That's all I can tell you.
user136984
You know? I'm just constantly eating... :D
found it btw
can i say it here?
user136984
16:35
No
user136984
How did find it? And how can you be sure it is it?
not a problem, everyone knows it
user136984
Do they?
that's fine but i saw you fixed default column width
isn't that right

well as long as you are convinced i managed to find it :P
@ParanoidPanda Congratulations my friend ! :) You can be proud of what you've got done ! :) Great job ! :)
user136984
Thanks :)
user136984
@edwinksl: How exactly did you find it?
user136984
Is it the only thing in -proposed or something? :D
16:37
all i can say is all the info i needed is public
user136984
@edwinksl: I'd be curious to know more.
i could email you :P
user136984
No, I would prefer not. :D
user136984
I always get paranoid about these things. :P
user136984
@edwinksl: Is this anything for me to get paranoid about or did you just look up the history of updated packages or something?
16:45
no and no
user136984
Because I'm paranoid enough as it is... :P
user136984
Ok, well, you've got me paranoid now! ;P
user136984
Wherever you found the information, I'm assuming a list somewhere, did you just guess it was the update I did or was there anything else to suggest that it was (it being the only thing on the list doesn't count)?
i didn't use any list
user136984
Really? So how did you find it?
user136984
16:48
I'm not worried any more, just really curious. :D
:P
anyway there is nothing to hide, you should be proud of your contributions
user136984
Yes, you're right. :)
user136984
And now you'll be able to find my fat Hamster videos online too! :D
@edwinksl that is exactly correct ! :) ... so @ParanoidPanda stop getting paranoid and share the information about it yourself - okay ? :)
16:58
gah... trying to take an afternoon nap but it's hopeless...

user136984
I will have to consult my brain council on the matter @cl-netbox. But your suggestion will be heard. ;P
@ParanoidPanda nice ! :)
Oh congratulations @ParanoidPanda !!
>_<
17:08

@NathanOsman did you kill us all?

@Anwar I'm having that problem... please share your fix
17:40
oh. great then. i can verify
do you use any usb device during shutdown?
no
It happens to me when I keep my USB modem connected with the Laptop
If i pull it off before shutdown, it cleanly shuts down
I created a file at /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/enable-sleetp-wake-permission.pkla
and puts these
[Enable Sleep Wake]
Identity=unix-user:root;unix-user:anwar
Action=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.sleep-wake
ResultAny=no
ResultInactive=no
ResultActive=yes
can you check this ^ @Zanna
17:59
ahh I'm not using NetworkManager, it's on Arch
I was adding permission to this policy because when I rannmcli general permissions only this was negative
hmm interesting
@dino So the link in the T?
after adding this, I can shutdown with my Modem Plugged In
I will have to dig more in journalctl
18:02
@Zacharee1 yes. there was another one with a link on a dot
😭😭😭
how does it help them actually?
@dino they're getting smarter in avoiding deletion, but I don't see the point of hiding the spam
SEO
how so?

@Zanna everything fixed in arch ? :D
Thanks! @edwinksl @Zanna
18:44
@IanC up to you. it is your last chance of seeing your college friends, that's about it
not much time to spend with them after the graduation, cause I have to be back the next day early, but yeah, will be good to see them @edwinksl
@cl-netbox I just got firefox & Telegram up & running in Arch but I have a lot more to do :)
@Zanna Is arch your daily driver or is ubuntu your main OS ?
aaahhh ... RINZY jumped in ! :D Good evening @Rinzwind ! :)
Ubuntu is my jam... but now I'm in the room from Arch... and I can see I need to fix some fonts!
18:53
I'll go make some vitamin and go buy some food!
be right back
Well it looks like I'm waiting until November to get a new phone
waiting for something special?
@Zanna nothing now has an IR blaster
I'm willing to give up a removable battery, but I use the IR blaster too much to do without
There is the G5, but I don't really want that
I don't even know what that is...
haha @edwinksl but I guess I'm doing Arch cause I wanna intervene :)
oh I found out... pretty cool... surely should be easy to stick that on a phone... @Zacharee1
18:58
Hopefully the V20 or G Flex 3 will be good phones
@Zanna apparently, not enough people use it to justify its presence

Why do people come to AU for Mint help?
The Mint site links to the Mint forums
Who's telling them to come here? >_>
@edwinksl haha you just wrote the comment I was writing
I was curious, can we have full disk LUKS encryption with 2 distros installed?
@Zanna for once i am faster :P
what are you two up to
@Zacharee1 maybe quality of help in mint forums sucks. i should check them out one day
19:51
Mint seems like a really friendly community... My dad uses Mint and he says so
Last post was today, about an hour ago
so where are these people getting the idea that Ask Ubuntu is Ask Mint?
hehe I have 4.7.1 kernel in Arch... it's like eating cakes still hot from the oven
:p
But it took you so long to setup, Ubuntu's using kernel 4.10 :p
shiny new kernel, i am jealous
19:56
hahaha
kernel is such an overused word
@edwinksl there their they're
waddya mean @Zacharee1 it only took me... erm... three days (two of which was faffing around with stupid bcm wireless card) (and I still have no DE and there's nothing in my .bashrc except `alias ls='ls --color=auto' but shhhhh)
it's OK, we just have to get used to its naming
@Zanna huehuehue
@Zanna how do you like your empty /etc/skel/.bashrc
19:59
it's a lovely blank canvas ;) hahaha
