what i miss?
o/ @Fabby
@KazWolfe I pushed the button to launch the nukes.
Good night to you alone then...
@NathanOsman which nuke button?
Btw I've been to Canada!
i know of at least 17 you have under your control
00:00
@Fabby oh?
(got stuck at Calgary for 6 hours because of severe storms...
@KazWolfe 17? I have one button to rule them all.™
@Fabby Sounds like Calgary, all right :D
They get really crazy weather there.
I asked if I could walk on the tarmac and ignore the lighting but they wouldn't let me!!!
@Fabby hello Mr. F . . . May we talk somewhat in private on tox ?
@Fabby It's not a terribly large airport anyway.
At least not compared to Vancouver or Toronto.
00:03
:D :D :D
On phone, so sorry: @serg
And I need to sleep.
Get some rest.
And thanks for stopping in.
You know my real name, right?
@Fabby well , get some sleep then. Was nice seeing you
I probably have it in an email somewhere.
@Fabby yes, i know
00:05
Skype me firstnamelastname no spaces, dots or underscore
@Fabby Skype: serg.kolo
Delete that
I just realized that I probably haven't used Skype in over a year.
Do you have a hat on?
In your avatar on Skype
@Fabby red christmass hat , guy with beard and weird smile
and glasses
00:09
Skype request sent
added
well, going to get ready for work, graveyard shift this week
eww skype
see yall later
@Seth At the last programming job I had, that's what the company used for internal communication. And for what it's worth, the chat worked quite well.
00:16
every day.
@NathanOsman oh I used the chat for years.
now I will repeat: eww skype ;)
@Seth all chat sucks ;p
@JourneymanGeek you're not wrong ;P
I've found Telegram to be pretty great (best I've used), but it falls short in the security area, tho it is better than most.
so seth
what is a good chat solution?
I have good memories of ICQ though.
@KazWolfe What do you need it for?
let's just say general chat which is reasonably secure
groups would be a huge bonus
00:22
Do you need a desktop client or mobile only?
as would it being open. moderation is unnecessary but nice
I need to update matrix at some point...
mobile would be preferred, but desktop clients are good
@KazWolfe IRC!
@JourneymanGeek And I quote, "but IRC is ugly and for hacker nerds"
00:23
@KazWolfe clearly the person who said this is a muggle behatted hipster.
@KazWolfe ohhh, open eh? I haven't played with that too much. IRC is definitely a good contender.
that would be correct.
matrix seems interesting but is under pretty massive development
Not too hard to secure and it's light weight.
they like shiny flat UIs, akin to Apple's design principles.
@JourneymanGeek Anything else is ugly and for peasants
00:23
its got a pretty nice phone and web client, and its a open standard.
There was an SE chat clone that was pretty decent. I don't remember the name tho.
yeah that one
problem with it is there's no native auth method. Was 'easy' to set up
I have notes for that somewhere
@KazWolfe well slack works, but it's not really free.
Check out ryver and mattermost as free and OSS alternatives.
00:26
@Seth "slack is difficult and it makes no sense"
@KazWolfe may I suggest hand delivered notes?
@Seth "too slow"
@KazWolfe your friend is difficult and makes no sense.
haha, that xD
so you want open, as in anyone can join easily (like IRC)? Not like FB chat?
00:27
slack - too hard and not easy to use
irc - ugly terminal interface that is literally unusable
open inasmuch as I can mod and read/write messages
That's not really how personal communication works..
Either way, outside of slack and friends, IRC, and discord I have little other experience in the world of large group/open chat. Most of my tinkering was in the realm of 1to1/small group stuff that was closer to SMS than IRC.
Good night akl
Need sleep
night fabby!
@Seth I really need to work on Pratl.
I think it will be easier if I split it into two parts - the Django backend that powers the UI and takes care of registration, etc and a Go backend that takes care of WebSockets. The two would communicate through Redis.
00:39
That brings the app to at least four Docker containers then :D (Django UI, Postgres, Go, Redis)
@Zacharee1 i guess i have no laugh muscles, because i said it without laughing
@Serg must be more stereotypical than we thought
@Zacharee1 Challenge accepted. Challenge passed.

Q: Acceptable Questions?

JamesThere are a few things that were never quite clear. On askubuntu we can ask questions about third-party software, package installation and hardware issues. Can we also ask about software compatabilities like, "THIS_PACKAGE was installable in 14.10, why doesn't it work in 16.10 and when will we be...

01:14
Lol.
If I ever get a pet, it is so going to be a turtle.
lol
@Serg I get it you they vape
totes
I need to make it out to Colorado.
Doesn't the altitude make it hard to breathe? :D
(Not the fog, I mean the distance from sea level.)
01:17
@JourneymanGeek they vape AND do marijuana , so yeah . . .
It's not that bad, supposedly.
@Serg maybe both
I mean, i can breathe at the altitude just fine, it's the allergy that's killing me
"Mile High City" - there's your proof right there.
(amusingly I'm softly against both simply cause the fanboys annoy me)
01:18
You could move to Washington :P
I am not against either, as long as it's done with brains . . . without brains anything can go wrong
we have all that, including the fanboys ;p
From a moral point-of-view, medicinal pot isn't really much different from other painkillers. Perhaps even less addictive than some.
@NathanOsman quite literally... the fanboys annoy me
Well, there's that and yes, I agree.
01:19
Oh great, now we get into politics. We've got a room for that. ;-)
and I'm one of those folks who believe that people should be allowed to do what they want in private.
lol
my bad
HAH. You're in the wrong city @JourneymanGeek. Singapore is not known for its libertarian leanings... lol
we should sneak @JourneymanGeek in so he can vote for Gary Johnson :P
@Seth I have NO idea how it happened, honest ;p
I heard Singaporean gold medalists get paid the most
01:22
speaking of fanboys...
@Serg <pinky in mouth> 1 million dollars
@James Yeah, but at least this room is civil enough that we can all disagree and still shake hands at the end of it.
Some of the other rooms on the network, well... not so much.
annoyingly 20% goes to their swimming club (He trains in the US for dog's sake), and taxes and...
On the bright side, his military service has been defered so he can train
@NathanOsman this room is not so civil when it comes to text editors
Well, I'll still shake hands with vim users.
Well, we have the ubuntu code of conduct to guide us, more or less.
01:24
That too.
But it really all boils down to: be nice.
Personally, I'm fine with any text editor that people use. I started with nano myself, then switched to vim.
And yup . . .
@NathanOsman wait, you're an emacs user?!
GOOD HEAVENS NO.
I'd rather use cat than emacs.
phew xD
I already had one friend switch to emacs :(
01:27
lol
I've pretty much settled on nano until I have the time to learn vim.
I thought we didn't discuss religions here? ;p
I'm being waaaay too serious here, I know :P
I tried emacs once. Managed to split screen somehow, and edit a few files. But never went back to it
I also want to learn tmux when I get the chance.
01:28
same
I'm using byobu. best of both
I've heard of byobu too - is it worth learning?
it's a frontend to tmux.
it's really a wrapper script for both tmux and screen
I use it because it's super easy to do for simple things.
01:29
i use it because features: clock, ip indicator, etc
and pretty colors
and really there's just a few things to learn. F1-4 keys, splitting, scrolling, and thats it
I wanted to start a blog , maybe i should start it with byobu tutorial or something
gosh, i wish i could have a third screen. Once you have dual screen, you never wanna go back to single screen
@Serg true that
@Zacharee1 nice!
but sry, no account
01:42
i just got an account , yay
@NathanOsman I use tmux and vim and zsh. I'm about as fanatic as it gets. :P
TBH, tmux is much nicer than screen in basically everything
@RPiAwesomeness that reminds me of the other day I couldn't figure out why changes to my .bashrc weren't working.
@Seth xD I did that, except with bash aliases
You use zsh too?
yeah
@Serg yay
01:44
I like it.
I got all my favorite parts of fish, but still got to use bashisms.
It takes a little setup to get really nice, but when you do...
Especially for dev stuff, integrates nicely with git
I lose all my hair?
@Zacharee1 y u no exif data ಠ_ಠ
Anybody uses duolingo here ?
@Seth Imgur?
01:46
@NathanOsman wait, when did @James switch to zsh?
@Serg I do. Did French over the past school year, going to be doing German this year
:P
I really really like the autocompletion
@Seth I didn't know that he did.
@Zacharee1 y u imgur ಠ_ಠ
01:47
@Serg I try then forget
@NathanOsman it was a joke. and maybe a bad onbe
@Seth Imgur strips EXIF.
@Seth I could Flickr, but getting the direct link is a huge hassle
@RPiAwesomeness lovely ! I'm doing Spanish right now.
@NathanOsman I know
01:47
Haven't done any since 6 years ago
@Serg ¿me comprendes?
@Serg Nice :)
@Zacharee1 no se que tu hablas , pinche pingino :p
I decided to do German because it's a little more rare than Spanish and I have several friends who are taking it
@Seth ages ago
01:48
@Seth @James Do you guys use OhMyZsh?
@Serg ay dios mio
i've been a zsh fan for... probably 4, maybe 5 years.
<-- does
@RPiAwesomeness yup
It's getting harder to be polite to telemarketers.
Especially during supper.
01:49
@NathanOsman i stopped being polite.
@James this
@RPiAwesomeness Sprischt du Deutsch? Because I don't
"Hi. Thanks for calling me. Bug off. Call me again and the federal governmen-<they hang up>"
@NathanOsman You actually hear them out?
01:49
@Zacharee1 Leider Nein :P
Best idea I've heard: tell them "oh, you need to talk to so-and-so, one moment" and then leave the phone off the hook.
I just don't pick up the phone
I'm learning it
hahahahaha
01:49
for "your windows has a virus" ones
i give them a VM and watch
done that once or twice
@James CALL REALL MS SUPPORT NOW 1-888-NOTAFAKE
@James I've seen videos of people doing that xD
@James @Seth Wanna swap screenshots?
@RPiAwesomeness of what, our zsh?
@James I have a Windows 98 VM.
That might be fun.
>:)
@James Yeah
01:50
MS support is alright, but there's some that try to phish out your IRS info . Happened to my father couple of times
@NathanOsman there's a YTer who did some vids like that
friend: x didn't answer my messages :(
me: don't worry, siri will.
friend: I prefer cortana
me: cortana is evil
friend: only in books written by siri
me: wait, Halo was written by siri?!
that was too much fun xD
@RPiAwesomeness looks the same as mine.
01:51
But... is it legal to record the call without informing the other party?
I don't think it is up here.
That would kinda spoil it.
@RPiAwesomeness that's the same as mine too, except I stuck with the default purple background.
I like that color that. What is it?
@Seth Yeah, I've got the ARC theme installed
It is not legal @NathanOsman AFAIK
@Serg It depends on the state.
01:52
I'm in the state of Canada.
4
@serg @NathanOsman long story short, don't.
Default ARC theme, but I tweaked it a bit to make it match the titlebar to make it seem more like a single window
@NathanOsman "This call may be recorded for quality and training purposes"
And added some transparency
@NathanOsman I'm in the state of Procrastination
3
01:53
XD @Zacharee1
@RPiAwesomeness for vim, check out vim.spf13.com
I like the agnoster theme, but it takes a bunch of extra configuration
@NathanOsman I was talking to Serg ;)
@James Could I play a "this call may be recorded for archival purposes" and then some beeps, dialtones, and whatnot followed by me answering the phone?
I usually don't pick up numbers that i don't recognize
01:53
once you tweak the settings for the appropriate tabs vs spaces side you're on, it's a pretty fantastic vim setup.
@NathanOsman Not in Washington. Basically: check.
@Seth so if I call T-Mobile from WA they can't record my call for quality purposes?
@Seth Don't ruin it
They take the fun out of everything. It's my telephone. It's an unsolicited call. I should be able to do what I want with it.
I need to write another blog post & update it (For example, I no longer use a Surface), but I still do this today, more or less: blog.jamesrgifford.com/2015/09/16/working-in-the-cloud
@NathanOsman Vote Gary Johnson and change that!
01:54
Is it the same people that said I can't fly my drone in a national park? :D
:P
I'm laughing at the irony of sneaking Nathan in to vote for Gary Johnson xD
@NathanOsman US politicians get into a lot of places they shouldn't be, so maybe
@Zacharee1 T-mobile is a big company. They can get away with whatever they want
That ^
01:55
@Seth imagine Verizon though
Recording calls is like, super confusing.
"Too big to fail" == "I'll do whatever I want, so there."
@Zacharee1 I don't need to imagine it.
@Seth dun dun dun
01:56
Bottom line: talk to a lawyer.
I'm really disappointed that the TMO S7 has a locked BL
TMO says Samsung did it without asking
If it's across state lines (AKA, place your call center in a 1-party state), then federal law (1 party) applies and nobody is going to be able to get a 2-party state law to stick across state lines for the call... more or less.
Fix: Don't buy Samsung.
(I AM NOT A LAWYER)
@James so then it's legal
with inform
01:57
I hear they get paid well (lawyers).
@Seth I want my S-Pen.
And we'll just have to see about the Note 7
Cause there's no way I'm getting the N5
why would you get a Nexus 5?!
Note 5!
@RPiAwesomeness have you started down the path of tmux plugins?
lol
slowternet
01:59
@Zacharee1 Oh. N is reserved for the nexus devices ;p
Bottom line, don't pick up phone numbers that you do not recognize
