00:30
@William I don't like it that much
guys I need some quick help. I'm have several processes under the parent group 'python' how can I grep this parent group for a specific python file such as 'test.py'?
lol whoever was asking the purpose of help tag
here is one

Q: Wireless help on HP Pavillion

TRAVSo I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my HP Pavillion DV6000 and my wireless will not connect. I been searching all over the Internet for answers so this is my last resort. Nobody can quite figure it out I've heard to get online and do updates but I cannot connect so I therefore cannot get online. ...

jrg
jrg
@sadmicrowave htop
@wisemonkey pretty sure thats a dupe...
@jrg oops sorry title is changed its was something like this:
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ubuntu 11.10
and thats all :P
jrg
jrg
@wisemonkey i saw lol
00:37
@jrg I need the actual process id of a specific running python child. for example:

ps -g python | grep test.py

or something should return the pid if 'test.py' is actually running. if not, then it should return blank
jrg
jrg
@sadmicrowave i see.
not sure about that...
since the process in the process tree looks like this 'python test.py' I just need someway to find if that test.py program is actually running
@jrg: I would rather ask these kinda questions over at forums or try to file a bug askubuntu doesn't really seem to solve them
@sadmicrowave: I've no idea how python works but is there something in python itself to keep track of its children?
@wisemonkey looking for that now - but i've been searching for awhile and I can't seem to find it
hmm ok I'll look as well not sure if I can differentiate garbage from useful though :P
00:41
thanks for looking!
@sadmicrowave: is this something u r looking for ?
lol just found that too, but no
okie some more looking :P
I didn't even bother reading that one
im going to say no after reading half of it
I'm back now.
@MarcoCeppi: Do we have a definite icon for package links yet?
00:51
hehe well I don't seem to help u a lot try stackoverflow chat room
@GeorgeEdison yes, Stack Exchange will be using their URL shortner so it can be updated in the future

Q: Change the software icon

Marco CeppiI've been working to resolve this software icon issue, this will likely require a large find/replace on the site. In 11.10 the software icon was revised, going forward should we use that icon for the software links? Please vote below.

So the final URL is...?
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi also, will we/SE be able to mass-edit them easily?
@GeorgeEdison No, don't use that URL
jrg
jrg
massive find-and-replace on the SQL DB would suck. :P

Q: Don't close questions where the user has requested that it not be closed

@jrg That's what's taking so long to get this all put together, I checked with them earlier and they said they're still working on a way to do this for us
-102 votes?
@GeorgeEdison SE is going to give us an s.tk domain for the image, so next time the software center icon changes we can just update the short URL and have it point to the right icon
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi ok.
@MarcoCeppi Right, that's a good idea.
00:58
I mean, python or not, the concept should remain the same. How do I grep the ps aux output for child processes under a parent group?
ps -aef | grep -i "processname" | grep -v "grep" | awk '{ print $3 }' will give you the parent of the process you "grepped"
whats the -i ?
nvm
@MarcoCeppi thank you so much, that is what I needed and it solved my problem
thank you!
one quick question though
why is the grep -v 'grep' necessary?
Oli
Oli
Because ps shows the grep command, that eliminates it
01:07
awesome!
I was looking for that earlier
thank you again
Attention everyone: you can now download Microsoft Internet Explorer 1.0.
Anyone interested?
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison I can't find the actual link...

And it won't run on anything but 95, NT3 or NT4
IE4 brings back some memories.

@Oli No, it will run on Vista / 7.
Oli
Oli
I'll believe you but their compatibility chart is wrong then
Speaking of compatibility, I wonder if IE3 supports CSS3 box-shadow
Hell, I wonder if IE3 knows what CSS is.
01:13
@Oli Duh, of course it does
Oli
Oli
1.5! That's not 1!
@Oli It supports HTML5 video, though only AVI files :P
Oli
Oli
That's like 50% bigger, better and crashy
It would be funny/strange/odd/impossible if you loaded up IE1 and it turned out they'd implemented CSS3 and they've just been stripping features away over the years
how do I follow tag?
01:16
@Oli iexplore.exe --with-css3-support
I guess subscribe...

Actually, I take that back

ahh that makes sense
but that implies anyone who is not student can have complete answer :P

I'm supposed to be at 1k rep
but I'm not
I earned 200 rep yesteraday
I even got the motarbound badge to prove it
but now I have 72 more reputation
not 200
I earned the priveleges for 1k
but i dont h1ve 1k i have 918
@William your account seems fine
Well why didn't I gain the 200 rep?
some events that cost reputation, such as deleted questions, don't have any influence on your reputation right away
I got said motarbound badge...
but the system re-calculates your rep from time to time
that's while, sometimes, a bunch of it goes missing
13:42
I didn't gain rep on deleted questions to my knowledge
jrg
jrg
@William odd, most of my votes are still there.

this is a system message from today: ScheduledController.InvalidateVotes() old rep = 1038, new rep = 908

          echo 'starting script.py...'
     end script

I just don't know how/where to echo out the process id once started....

14:05
quite often i do mass upvoting for one person. i'm not aware of this causing any problems, so this might only affect lower-rep users.
does it belong here or on Uniz and Linux?
@htorque It affects every user.
@OctavianDamiean yeah, that way i ended a day with 199 instead of 200 rep haha
@OctavianDamiean guess i'm lucky then. :P
@htorque It is not the voter that gets punished but the user that got upvoted.
Punished is the wrong word here.
@htorque you won't get penalised for causing the filter to kick in

@OctavianDamiean i checked that users reps and it stayed the same :)

Q: ubuntu upstart script execute a script.py program

I guess my question is: can I have an exec AND script tags to execute the process status command within the upstart script.conf file? Or are they either/or syntax?
Hmm good question.
and for that matter, can I have multiple exec's within one upstart conf file? for example: if I want to execute my python script and also execute upstart -v to log all upstart events related to that startup process, can I have multiples without it breaking?

Anyone ever done OEM installs of Ubuntu? Does it give you the options to preload it with stuff? (e.g, drivers, chromium, things like that)

@jrg I imagine most OEMs would either image and clone an install or remaster the CD
@sadmicrowave Well you can put those two things into a shell script.
jrg
jrg
15:08
@Oli i'm too lazy to do that for only 2-3 machines. :P
Oli
Oli
Imaging and cloning is actually really simple with something like Clonezilla.
@OctavianDamiean right, but then that loops back to my first question, being: can I have a shell script tag along with an exec command?
Oli
Oli
Almost definitely faster than x separate installs, assuming configuration is the same on each machine (eg they're all the same or similar-enough hardware), and x>2
jrg
jrg
yeah...
hm,.
i'll have to play around with that idea.
thanks.
@OctavianDamiean or are you saying I don't need both, just put my exec into the script tag like so:

    script
        python /my/dir/script.py
        upstart -v
    end script
15:12
Wait, you can't have a shell script in a exec command?
@OctavianDamiean that wouldn't be in an exec command. the above would be what my script.conf upstart file contents look like. Rather than using exec /my/dir/script.py I use script tags to do the same thing....
Well they both do two different things as far as I know.
Oh holy crap! I just realized we are talking about Upstart and not udev!!
Sorry.
Never mind.

is there a command to quickly check the sanity of a script file, to ensure there are no blatant errors?
16:59
@sadmicrowave What language?
sorry, its a python script
what I'm looking for a bash command or CLI python option
I'm trying to perform a sanity check in my pre-start script in my upstart conf file. I want to check if the file exists and if there are any syntax issues
The best way to check for syntax issue is to add a switch in the script - say --sane which would include all modules required and try to exit with a 0 status. If there's any issue in the python script, it'll exit immediately
is --sane a valid/pre-existing switch to add in the pre-start script or is that something I will have to construct?
You'll have to add it.
or wait, --sane would be added to my exec like so:

exec /my/dir/mypython.py --sane
17:04
@sadmicrowave Like that
python3 server.py --sane
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "server.py", line 8, in <module>
    import api
  File "/opt/api/api.py", line 7, in <module>
    exec("from modules.%s import Module" % i)
  File "<string>", line 1, in <module>
  File "/opt/api/modules/email.py", line 8
    not real code
                ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
Ultimately though, if you try to execute a Python script with invalid syntax it'll die
so you can just capture the exit code when you try to execute it - if it's not 0 then there was a syntax problem
i know, I'm just trying to validate the script, and potentially kill it, before I initiate a new runlevel and process
Every window that opens in Wine appears at the top left of my left screen - is there a way to fix this?
That's what --sane is for. If --sane is set the script doesn't do anything, but you can capture the exit status. If it's not 0 then there's an issue don't proceed with startup.
--sane, --test, --dry-run you could use any one of those naming schemes
Out of office reply: I'll be away from the internet this weekend. Have fun everyone!

17:22
@sadmicrowave You could try importing the script. If it imports, its syntax is fine. If it doesn't it's grotty.
But you'll have to append to the Python path or you won't be able to import it at all. That's fairly simple though:
@Oli thats true....hmmm let me look into how to do that in a shell
Oli
Oli
import sys
sys.path.append("/path/to/script/")
