When I ssh into my server I log in under root or my user on the system.
However, when I checkout from my svn repos then are then owned by either root or my user, and therefore all files deployed to my server come up with a 500 error on the server with the message "UID of script is less than MIN_...
I'm building my own upstart config to exec /some/dir/script.py however I want to echo out to the command line that the service is starting up... and then respond with the process id of the service once it starts.... it seems like I would do this with the following:
pre-start script
echo 'starting script.py...'
end script
I just don't know how/where to echo out the process id once started....
Unless this is a Mono port of stackoverflow and it is running on Ubuntu server.

Likewise I want to echo stopping service - script.py... when it is being stopped.

I guess my question is: can I have an exec ANDscript tags to execute the process status command within the upstart script.conf file? Or are they either/or syntax?
and for that matter, can I have multiple exec's within one upstart conf file? for example: if I want to execute my python script and also execute upstart -v to log all upstart events related to that startup process, can I have multiples without it breaking?
Almost definitely faster than x separate installs, assuming configuration is the same on each machine (eg they're all the same or similar-enough hardware), and x>2
@OctavianDamiean or are you saying I don't need both, just put my exec into the script tag like so:

@OctavianDamiean that wouldn't be in an exec command. the above would be what my script.conf upstart file contents look like. Rather than using exec /my/dir/script.py I use script tags to do the same thing....

I'm trying to perform a sanity check in my pre-start script in my upstart conf file. I want to check if the file exists and if there are any syntax issues
The best way to check for syntax issue is to add a switch in the script - say --sane which would include all modules required and try to exit with a 0 status. If there's any issue in the python script, it'll exit immediately

Ultimately though, if you try to execute a Python script with invalid syntax it'll die
so you can just capture the exit code when you try to execute it - if it's not 0 then there was a syntax problem
That's what --sane is for. If --sane is set the script doesn't do anything, but you can capture the exit status. If it's not 0 then there's an issue don't proceed with startup.
--sane, --test, --dry-run you could use any one of those naming schemes
