12:03 AM
@daBoss nice.

@daBoss Driving that fast, I bet it was hairy at times. :P

12:28 AM
@Terrance lol, timelapse... it actually took me about 20 mins...

@daBoss Timelapse is fun to amaze your friends with on how fast and accurate you can drive. ;)

FR bug - on an asymmetrical multi-monitor rig, it would be nice if software updater centered on your primary screen... as in whichever one has the root menu. Things like blender stretching across monitors makes sense, but simple utilities like software updater should probably center on the primary or last remembered screen. It would be awesome if that was exposed through the Ubuntu SDK as well.

mm, what's the command to force an LTS upgrade before a point release (HWE) is released? Is it do-release-upgrade -d or -p?

@Seth try both
@Seth Or do it graphically

I'm not doing it, I don't run LTS ;)
also, trying both isn't a good idea, one will put me in an unstable situation.

12:40 AM
how so?

LTS is about stability. -p will either upgrade me to the next LTS (before the HWE) or put me on proposed, which can be unstable. -d will either upgrade me to the next LTS (before HWE) or put me on the next release, which isn't LTS.

@Seth do it graphically :p

graphically only does one or the other..

Don't you want to go to the next release?

@Seth Are you hinting that this is the behavior on latest?

12:44 AM
@hbdgaf eh? If I'm running 14.04 the update manager won't show 16.04 until 16.04.1 comes out. Been that way for a while now.

Here's an answer from @Jorge-the-robot askubuntu.com/a/125834/5768

haha, I was literally just reading that! Thanks @hbdgaf, you found it much faster than me :)

To test that the correct version is found, one can run do-release-upgrade -c. looks important and IS the answer to your question

lol someone just PM'ed me in IRC and told me "if you're the legit sethj you kick ass!" and then "wait, wrong seth, sorry" xD

boo. look in a mirror and give yourself a hug from me ;)

12:57 AM
:)
It was funny though. They were still nice.
That's the biggest reason I stuck with Ubuntu after switching to Linux. The community is freaking awesome!!

Yes. Most of the community is a testament to the patience of Job.

@RPiAwesomeness About 0 A.D.: Make sure you download it beforehand! It's over 600MB and with Launchpad being slow it takes at least 40 minutes to download over my 20MBps connection.
actually, I should probably post that on the thread itself.

I would have posted the datetime in the same format that it appears in the clock widget as opposed to the US interpretation. Just saying.

1:20 AM
I thought he did?
I've always used MM-DD-YY(YY), never YYYY-MM-DD.

I use YYYY-MM-DD with dates on my systems - makes sorting easier
but always MM-DD-YYYY in my handwriting and on papers and such

@Seth I don't even bother downloading it on my connection. I head over to packages.ubuntu.com and grab the 0ad-data package over at a coffee shop or store with free WiFi :P
Then I come home, use dpkg to install that, and then install the rest with apt-get.
Works like a charm.

1:37 AM
@NathanOsman That's a good idea ;)

Q: Resizing directories

George LI am not too familiar with how volume sizing works, but I have a VPS running Ubuntu 14.04, and I noticed the home directory is all used up. I have a 1TB drive on this machine, how can I allocate more space to /home? $ df Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on udev ...

2:11 AM
Does Kali Linux have a mobile version, or am I reading the site wrong?
Who here likes Fedora as a user-OS (not only for developers)?

@Zacharee1 I know @JourneymanGeek uses Fedora. Dunno if he considers himself a developer or not. I think @jokerdino uses it too
:(

2:36 AM
hmm
I kind of want to try it (because of the whole GNOME thing), but idk if it'll really be that good.
THERE"S NOTHING THERE AND IT DOESN"T CENTER AGHHHHH

What are the styles for the.modul-phone <div>s?
The container has display: block set, so it should occupy the full width (which it does).
@Zacharee1 I'm betting it's a 12-unit grid - each of those items only occupies 3 units. 3x3=9, so there's room for a fourth.

2:57 AM
@NathanOsman I did remove a 4th block, but I have no idea how to remove the "reference" to it
@NathanOsman I'm not very good with HTML :p
@NathanOsman you can see the source code here: techyteen.byethost7.com
right now, it doesn't have the exact stuff, but the formatting issue is still there
Halp me @NathanWan, you're my only hope :p

lol, centering with CSS...

@Mateo guh
Well I have to go to bed now, so goodnight

3:29 AM
@Mateo it's funny how that's such a joke..
and so true too xD

3:55 AM
Question...
How does the domain name "ubuci.xyz" strike everyone?
Catchy? Ugly? (Please ignore the .xyz TLD - I'm thinking in particular of the ubuci part.)
It's a shortened form of "Ubuntu CI".
Alternative suggestions also welcome.
(Sadly, "uci" is already taken.)
I could also add a dash - "ubu-ci.xyz". Probably helps with reading. But what do people think of domains with dashes?
Lol. "ubu-ci.club" is the same price :P
"ubu-ci.space" is still a reasonable price too.

I don't like ubuci, it doesn't strike me as related to anything I'd know.. Not a huge fan of dashes in domains but it does help.
is this something like travis, jenkins or circle?

Yeah, kinda like Travis, but for Click and Snappy packages.

cool.

It just needs a nice name :)

Why not something like 'snappyCI' then?

4:01 AM
But what about click packages?
I don't want to use "click" or "snappy" in the name since it does both.

just because it's in the name doesn't mean it only does that.
But sure.. hmm

I'm not 100% sold on that though, so if you can talk me out of it... :P
Is .ci a TLD? Hmm...

ooh

.ci is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Côte d'Ivoire. == Unconventional Naming == In most situation, specific registrations are done using a second level domain name. Côte d'Ivoire also makes use of a special convention with an introductory name such as chu- instead of the second level domain name. Embassies: amb-name.ci Hospitals: chu-name.ci Tourism Offices: ot-name.ci Universities: univ-name.ci Companies House: cci-name.ci City Halls: mairie-name.ci == Secondary Level Names == The following are the existing second level names. The registration services offer to add more...

oh :/

4:03 AM
Can't tell if they are open for registrations though.
The registrar for the TLD has a slow website.

@Mateo thanks.

uci.online is available but it is $9.

@NathanOsman You know, if you make it good enough you could end up on ci.ubuntu.com :P

That would be nice.

oh wait, that's already a thing :/

4:09 AM
Those are for the system images though, not apps.

yeah, I know.

And it's not a service users can use - just for developers.

yeah
snappyCI just sounds.. snappy.

I'm warming up to it...

snappyci.click :P
That's a thing and only $6.22 :P

4:24 AM
Whoah...
But $12.51 CAD for me.

that only comes out to 8.89 CAD..
plus 2.86 tax, so 11.75 I guess.

I was hoping more for an .xyz domain - they're only $1.50 :P
But I guess it's a bit early to be grabbing a domain anyway.
Mostly it's for branding.
Maybe I will go with Snappy CI.

5:03 AM
@NathanOsman They're cheap.. for a reason :/

True.
If we're talking $10, I might as well get a .com.
snappyci.com is available.

Q: unable to boot windows after installing ubuntu 10.04

AneeshI have a new HP laptop. I have deployed windows 8.1 & ubuntu 15. Recently I removed ubuntu 15 and deployed ubuntu 10.04. Installation have been completed successfully. Morning folks :)
@NathanOsman time to sleep? :D

I find your manner of expressing yourself a little too hostile and high-handed for my taste so I shall delete this question if I am able. It is not worth this... — andrew.46 2 hours ago
Think I was too harsh?

@muru o_O no?

@A.B. Thanks. :) Care to try a Windows problem?

@muru not too harsh. You just said how it is. The OP should narrow their question with telling us what exactly they plan to run from HOME ad why they don't run it from default locations.

7:22 AM
@Takkat I suppose since they haven't deleted it, they might have given it a second thought. Let's see how it goes.

that's always a good idea ;)

Yup, time to sleep.
Off to bed, yo.

Hi @edwardtorvalds o/

@@kos can you think of something on this askubuntu.com/questions/720261/… ?

kos
@edwardtorvalds /etc/bash.bashrc? Other files sourced by ~/.bashrc?
@edwardtorvalds I see only ~/.bash_aliases, so either /etc/bash.bashrc or ~/.bash_aliases

11:52 AM
@kos I thought of that too, but it must be related to uninstall of that software

kos
@edwardtorvalds Yes, since it started happening right after. Probably /etc/bash.bashrc since ~/.bash_aliases should be used for aliases.

@NathanOsman I thought you could choose your own T-shirt only at 100K???
How did you get that?

@kos so what now?

kos
@edwardtorvalds Dunno. Wanna play cards? :D

@kos haha, I mean the question, his bashrc file is clear. I think I should ask him to install that software again

kos
12:01 PM
@edwardtorvalds Well if they want to remove it maybe ask them to post /etc/bash.bashrc to see if it sources the non-existing script

Q: Do we, or do we not support wubi.exe?

mark kirbyI have been wondering this for a while and would like to get a definitive answer. We still get questions on wubi on the site, however, it is no longer developed and won't work on a modern Windows OS (8, 8.1, 10), so is it off topic or not? What got me thinking was a close vote on this question ...

12:50 PM
@NathanOsman #NitroShare paste.ubuntu.com/14486625 i had segmentation fault on my virtual box ( xubuntu 15.10 ). Somehow after the installation, i run nitroshare, it shown the icon on indicator plugin. after reboot to vbox it does not show the icon and my windows machine, show Vbox joined when i open nitroshare at vbox, and after half a minute, showes Vbox left nitroshare. i will try reinstall it.

@GeoMint you're back!

yeah :)
hello

Do you know anything about HTML/CSS?

yeah :P
i learned myself
from here: w3schools.com and i bought a book
@Zacharee1 do you need help?

@GeoMint I think :p
I can't figure this grid out and have no idea where to start

12:59 PM
ok

right now, I'm just editing every class/id I can find that relates in some way

i will be back in 5 min

Here's the site address: techyteen.byethost7.com
ok

brb

It's the second part, with the three icons and the slides below. The icons/buttons aren't centering; there used to be 4, but now there are three
OK

1:17 PM
I got it I got it!
:P

that was not five min :P
sorry
@Zacharee1 what site is that?

It's the site I'm setting up for my business (for lack of a better word)
I'm using a template, and a confusing one at that
But for me that's good because the template looks amazing and the challenge helps me learn

thats good

kos
@Zacharee1 Try to wrap the three divs into a div with margin: 0 auto

@kos I finally got it: some annoying static widths were set in a CSS file that was unformatted and not the main one
Thankfully, CSS formatters exist

1:26 PM
@kos in the output of stty -a second line, they show intr (ctrl + c) and quit (ctrl + ), what is difference between them?

:P

kos
@Zacharee1 Ah, ok

But I'm probably going to need help with other things soon

@Zacharee1 i prefer the static websites. this is mine csd.uoc.gr/~csd3261

kos
@edwardtorvalds One is SIGINT and the other is SIGQUIT

1:29 PM
@kos I mean how do they difference in their function?
I dont know sigint or sigquit :p

kos
> The SIGQUIT signal is similar to SIGINT, except that it’s controlled by a different key—the QUIT character, usually C-\—and produces a core dump when it terminates the process, just like a program error signal. You can think of this as a program error condition “detected” by the user.

@GeoMint Well I do have that here: techyteen.tk

wow, nice

kos
@edwardtorvalds Basically they are the same, but SIGQUIT produces a core dump and doesn't delete temporary files (but that's really up to the implementation)

@kos core dump == copy of program in memory?

kos
1:32 PM
@edwardtorvalds Yep

@kos where ? :D

kos
@edwardtorvalds Dunno, never used :D but I think /var/crash?
Let me look that up

@kos there is not /var/crash on arch linux

@GeoMint Do you think I should just take those Details buttons out and list their stuff underneath instead of doing that weird filter?

what

kos
1:36 PM
@edwardtorvalds I thought you were talking about Ubuntu. On Ubuntu it should be /var/crash, on Arch no idea

is it really?

@Zacharee1 your site should be clear and easy to see

So then I'll get rid of them

the detail buttons are ok

kos
@edwardtorvalds Ah no. Read this: sigquit.wordpress.com/tag/core_pattern
However I often read about /var/crash, so I think on Ubuntu it's still /var/crash.

1:39 PM
@GeoMint so the filter is fine? I kind of want to make a popup for each, so it works well on mobile too

Q: How to create a Kerberos System?

Matteo CaponiWhich is the first step to create a kerberos domain??? Which is the best o.s. to build kerberos system? I would also to know which programs i need to make it. Thank you all for the answers!

5:53 PM
@A.B. Not sure - that's not a question I've ever had to address - for the most part, caching when a backend is down is up to the individual setting it up - either a failover server or a Varnish cache, though that will likely still explode/fail if the backend is down too long

@NathanOsman How many people can 0 A.D. handle before it becomes unplayable? We're considering turning it into a full fledged event, but I'm not sure the logistics are there yet.

user139252
I think it would depend on who was serving it...

@Zacharee1 ^^ She has a point

@Zacharee1 UI tip: Don't mess with the user's cursor.

kos
@Zacharee1 ^^ I agree with Heather Brown and Thomas W. that as a user pages that change the mouse cursor are really annoying, however if you really want to do that how about a solid sharper one? If you hover on the green that one is barely visible, and it's a bit blurred.

6:43 PM
Ahh! That cursor was for the old design. I was to lazy to get rid of it right away

user139252

depends on the website. I once saw one that made the cursor into this strong of characters spelling a poem where moving the cursor expanded the poem
art trumped there ;)

I've got to issue 7 truancy notices this month

@HeatherBrown I don't answer my phone unless I'm expecting a call or I know who is calling.

I'm sure a lot of people are like that.
I should probably get voicemail set up though..

Voicemail is good.

user139252
I've left about 15 of those today.

8:18 PM
@HeatherBrown well, I put mine on complete silent all the time, so voicemail is all you will get - plus some less important calls don't bother with leaving messages

user139252
I like the "Priority" mode on Lollipop where you can make it ring for certain people

Oh dear... I am nearly falling asleep, and I don't know how that is possible after so many cups of coffee (including a large soup bowl of it)... :D

@Nathan: Out of interest, as you've had so many DDoS attacks on your server, if someone managed to hack in and edit the source of the script, how much would they be able to reach into your computer?

user139252
@ParanoidPanda 42.

9:35 PM
@HeatherBrown :D :D :D

user139252
@Fabby If you need free web-hosting... I'm available for that :P

@HeatherBrown Because the family is in on it and they don't like teachers per definition.
@HeatherBrown :-) Do you do MySQL on the server too???
Thanks, when I get the money to pay for a domain name, I'll think of you! ;-)

user139252
@Fabby Yes, MySQL is there

kos
@ParanoidPanda Bamboo would be safe.

user139252
@Fabby Money? Nah! Get a free one!

9:42 PM
@HeatherBrown mmmh...
MySQL, Domain name, ....
Mail???
How about I send you a hard drive for your work? @HeatherBrown

user139252
I can set-up a mail server, yes.

user139252
What size hard-drive?

What kind of drive would you like then?
I was thinking of buying one locally in CA and have it shipped to you... @HeatherBrown
I suspect you can't really use Vorlon technology memory cubes... ;-)

user136984
@kos: Ok, well, I guess that's all that matters really in life! ;P

kos
@ParanoidPanda Indeed it is. :D

USB works best. I can find one I like and bill you?

@Rinzwind I never want to go back to University: It was boring and you had to do stuff you hated and had to pay for the privilege!
@HeatherBrown You mean: on the pi?
Yeah, why not... It doesn't need a lot of CPU

user139252
You'll get your own separate Pi :p

@HeatherBrown Nah! I was thinking max 100€ for a HDD...
