quick/wierd question (and I'd be happy to ask it on the main site if need be).

I've got a ubuntu install at work that I just upgraded. I have one package that I could have sworn was updated, but its marked as for update again. Its an old box that went from 12.04 (I think) to 14.04. Would ubuntu upgrade packages in stages? I just fixed up a load of held packages, and this wasn't one and I'm confused.

user136984
@Fabby: By the way, about that thing to do with PING flooding my router, if it would not reject them and instead just crash, is there normally something in its configuration settings which I can change so that it blocks PINGs by default? Or is it just how that router it.
You also find the github code link there in the room description.

@blade19899 and in us? aw... nope :(
still awesome though.
@A.B. see the comment? ;-)
the automatic removal has been in Ubuntu for years now and the maintainer of it still does not feel comfortable with it included in the base software. (other linuxes have auto-removal of kernels for a while now)
13:34
@KasiyA when you do edit, it gets auto approved/rejected
yeah, Ive seen people delete their current kernel before, or I've used an old kernel because the new one messed something up...
But in previous days/weeks I couldn't use that button!! Because I get the warning that I have to have a little change in body of post but now I can not see that alarm.
oh, look one of your answers @Rinzwind
33
Q: Why doesn't Ubuntu remove old kernels automatically?

Registered UserI wonder why Ubuntu won't remove the old kernels automatically. Surely nothing is perfect and things can go wrong, so in case a update doesn't work, having a backup kernel maybe great. But it would also suffice to just keep the latest kernel and the one before the latest and delete all the old...

@Mateo <3
@KasiyA it can... if you use a previous kernel and that is marked as old you got a problem.
yeah, one of my 14.10 laptops, is like 3-4 behind because of a strange screen flashing problem - manually set it to use that kernel
13:44
@Rinzwind No I don't think so!! It's not possible. Then why Ubuntu marks the current kernel as OLD while I'm using it?? She can unmark it as currently using kernel and keep it from some of problems. So is there any way to tell her to ignore the current one from deletion or manually control the old kernels?
Or no, autoremove will remove all of them except the new one?
And is it possible to change the configuration to keep the new and currently using kernel from deletion by that command?
We definitely need a (phone)app for the chat rooms here.
Ubuntu is female?? o.O"
@ByteCommander no
I did not really consider it talkative enough to be female...
who would think of that before running the command... I think that is why we just say "for advanced users only" and don't do it unless you need to
and know how to get yourself out of the mess it could make.
13:58
Did you have a test before?
14:13
@ByteCommander Oh please!.
Do try and avoid such ridiculously sexist remarks.
14:31
@terdon Really that bad? Come on! Did you see @Virusboy's bacon bra session two nights ago?

But yeah, that was a pretty bad comment.
There's enough ugly sexism in the IT world already.
woman==talkative is too common to be really bad in my opinion...

The Bacon Bra
Luckily Seth did eliminate the photos... ;)
@ByteCommander Umm, that's exactly why it's so bad.
Ah, don't be so uptight. Throw a prejudice about males in the room to keep the balance and good is.
I just really hate that kind of implicit sexism. Especially since the most talkative people I know are men, not women. So it's both sexist and wrong. As such things usually are.
14:41
but bacon bras are okay???
OK, I can't believe I'm discussing bacon bras :) but yes, they're different since they don't include an assumption about all women. You're lumping all women into a single, bad category. That's not nice. Bacon bras are just silly (though tasty).
That's how I feel anyway.
Is this ok in an answer? "Congratulations: You bought a cheap USB camera!."

But I just don't really understand why there is software specifically for ubuntu, which is advertised by trusted sources, which does harm to your machine... Why does it actually do something bad? Is it a incompatibility issue or something?
@Seth just saying i might be able to understand that vote slightly from his wording
but not unclear...

@Toroidal No, it could cause harm...

@Toroidal sure, both my netbooks and another intel board suffered extreem slowdown in the dash, so probally incompatibility, or canonicals version has an extra patch down the line... because that is what ubuntu starts with then the test and get it out to you later
