@Alvar Hardware questions are off-topic except for when they relate to running Ubuntu. What RAM to get has nothing to do with Ubuntu, so off-topic.
And @muru Server Fault is for questions related to server/computer management in a professional capacity. I'm sure most of the folks asking over there know what RAM to buy ;)
how do you close ports if there are not processes attached to it? I used to run an application and they're using this ports previously for some reason the application crashed but if i restart the application, i frequently need to change the port because the port is being used. But if I try to iss...
@Seth Well I thought it could be ok if you wrote it like what commands do I run to find out what memory is OK. Since that could be general. But nvm, if it's been solved. Still not sure we need a question like that...
End for the morning: "There needs to be a taggable pseudo-fs. This way you could set tag hierarchies and auto-organize your filesystem. Just think about how cool that would be. It would simplify replication too."
I accidently altered my partition table. Somehow I wiped it out completely and changed the disk label. The system has not been rebooted yet and I managed to rebuild it the way it originally was using the original structure and label however I need to re-install a new bootloader for the new MBR. I...
Related to this question:
Recently, I saw a question. While I was working on an answer, another answer popped up, of which the concept was quite the same as what I had in mind. However, the answer had a number of "fatal" issues that would make it definitely not work as it was. I stopped working...
I am writing a python program that makes use of some legacy Berkeley DB 1.85 files.
Unfortunately I am unable to install the bsddb185 Python package, either for Python version 2.x and for Python 3. What I got, using pip, is the following error message:
root@ubuntu:~# pip install bsddb185

As suggested in this tutorial I made a copy of the Motion configuration file in my home folder under ~/.motion/motion.conf . But Motion then still tries to access the config-file under /etc/motion/motion.conf . How do I fix this behaviour?
Here is what I get when I start Motion:

I've seen that in /var/lib/maas/dhcp/dhcpd.leases not all nodes in ready state do have a host block with a static entry. I added one for the IP that I need for the machine in question and run dhclient again. I hope this will stick for now, though the source for the issue remains un...

I've resolved that in this way: after to add the new environment i run these commands:

juju bootstrap -e maassvr02 --to node4.maas --debug
How can I allow the file browser, in Ubuntu 14.04, to show the time as well as the date that a file was modified?
For example, the image shows the day the files were Modified...but I cannot find an option to also show the time the files were modified.
Looking at this post. I think
in stead of
should be

When I try to save, it prompts:
Edits must be at least 6 characters; is there something else to

How can I edit only one character?
anyone know if there's a "standard" head lxc ppa? privileged containers work fine, but unprivileged containers lxc needs a patch for the newer kernels and trusty kernel is ahead of trusty lxc from repo.
not sure if i need to revert for more testing, but i got a permission error even after the upgrade, but it was a different one. i had to chmod +x ~/.local/share for things to start working
also, shouldn't the lxc utilities support -n being the first positional argument? i mean it would make sense right?
This question is because of some close votes due to EOL are wrong - I expect it is quite a lot.
This is a review of a perfectly good question - it was flagged as being EOL for being 10.04 - despte the fact that 10.04 server remain supported through April 2015.
Could the tool tip display somethi...
@Braiam I think the OP is asking for a tooltip warning. Maybe it would be more clearly interpreted that way if there was some reference to "x.y-server" to warn people that server might be OT longer than desktop.
@Mateo and tiny pinkies with sharp angular edges resembling a stylus.
@hbdgaf people VTC how they feel like, but I don't go rubber-stamping previous closevotes, but vote for the reason I consider the correct, I don't need tooltip informing me
In the need to enter the UEFI firmware setup utility while using ultra fast boot (keyboard drivers are not loaded during POST), I wish to write to the "Os Indications" efi variable. My OS is Ubuntu 14.04 kernel 3.13.0-35-generic.
OsIndications variable returns a UINT64 bitmask

@Braiam you're also not the average close-voter. i take your point, but when was the last time most of the regulars were generally classified as average?
@Seth how you believe the system will show the suggested tooltip, please humor me. — Braiam56 secs ago
@Braiam I'm really not sure what you mean there.
This isn't about asking questions, Tim is suggesting we show that tooltip when someone votes to close as EOL. Tags aren't involved at all.
I'm not saying the tooltip idea is a good idea, I'm yet to be convinced, but none of your points are making sense when compared to what Tim is suggesting.
all cases presented have somewhere the version of Ubuntu used
either in tags or in title
and tell me is not a normal behavior when you comments like this
your 2nd comment to me is a reaon why tagging a question with a release number is not always smart. An error in 13.10 that is not related to it being EOL can help a 12.04 or 14.04 user. On the other side: it is soooooooo darn handy to sort the questions on a tag like 13.10 (or Mint) and close-vote the new created ones :D — Rinzwind2 days ago
people close vote based on tags and irrelevant information all the time
