@Braiam what does it means btw?

gotta go. Have nice weekend everybody!

@Lucio thought you might get a kick out of that

@Lucio DIRECTORY="$HOME/bashing/test_$$"?
DIRECTORY="$HOME/bashing/test_$$" ; echo $DIRECTORY
/home/braiam/bashing/test_3684
@Lucio heh
@Lucio ~ doesn't expand (~ becomes /home/lucio) when used inside double quotes
➜  ~  DIRECTORY="~/bashing/test_$$" ; echo $DIRECTORY
~/bashing/test_3684
is taken as literal

Q: Static IP addressing issue in Ubuntu on BeagleBoneBlack Rev C

StringfellowI have my BBB configured to use a static IP address using the following in the file /etc/network/interfaces: allow-hotplug eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.0.0 This seems to work ok on boot, but when the ethernet cable is unplugg...

is this opinion based?

@AvinashRaj I wouldn't close it as opinion, but I would close it as bug report.

1:32 AM
@hbdgaf which text editor did you used to develop a tkinter script?

@AvinashRaj i don't use tkinter

any python scripts.

sublime works for me. people say komodo has better autocomplete. i used to use aptana studio.

I don't know how to use aptana studio..
OMG, i need to learn that.

aptana studio was okay, but it cried on really large stuff. try loading the metasploit project as an aptana ruby project.
not that netbeans did any better. so basically, better code completion means your IDE cries a lot on large projects

1:38 AM
so, in the aptana i need to open a untitled text document the i have to write some codes and then run it through external tools.

it's just a fancy text editor like anything else. i really tweaked eclipse at one point to have an embedded terminal and aptana plugin for python/ruby, but it's really not worth the time to beat it in to shape.

so you recommend aptana....
but the text are not colored..

yes it is. i don't recommend anything in particular

I can always recommend terminator + vim ;p

gedit ;p

1:53 AM
har har.
or geany, or emacs

emacs is too complicated, methinks.

shhh, don't speak of the one that shall not be named in a negative way... lest you rouse its anger ;)

heh heh.

@hbdgaf lol
WOHOOOO, Gotta trusted user privilege.

i sort of stopped trying ;) look at my rep graph from a couple of years ago >.>

1:59 AM
@AvinashRaj downvotes

lol

@Seth you just made me giggle a little
@AvinashRaj check like jan-jul 2012.

@hbdgaf Actually, it's been going up steadily.

@Seth that's quantity saturation, not effort. look at the jan to jul part i mentioned...
i was trying then ;)

Another year and you'll be there ;p
In the meantime.. I'm catching up ;)

2:03 AM
it's not important. it just is. funny graph though isn't it...

Anyone gonna complain I closed this one? (read the comments)

i wouldn't complain, but i would have duped it for future search optimization even if it's not the same question. if i were looking for something and i found that question, the other one probably has the data i need.

A quick search didn't bring a dupe to light, but you are right, there probably is one.
I should look a little harder.

Is there any question related to installing Rstudio in Ubuntu?

2:09 AM

did you already vote to delete?

yep..

weird. sometimes i can vote to delete and other times i can't... anyway.

@hbdgaf it's a recently closed question.
only 20kers can be able to delete a recently closed question which has a min of 3 downvotes.

Q: How to make a Linux Application?

algosigI want to know how is an application developed in Linux. I have no idea about what tools are used to make a linux executable application. I am using Ubuntu14.04.

2:23 AM
in other news, i made a lockpick set today. this should prove an interesting hobby, and it's relatively inexpensive to play with.

does a tag gold badge owner can be able to reopen a duplicated question?

152
A: Increase close vote weight for gold tag badge holders

Tim PostUpdate: this is now enabled everywhere! The rules are: You can instantly close as a duplicate any question that was originally asked with a tag you have a gold badge for. You can instantly reopen any question closed as a duplicate that was originally asked with a tag you have a gold badge for....

> If you get in a fight with someone over whether a question should be closed, moderators will be notified and they'll hit everyone with hammers lock everything down and tell you to go home.

I wonder if Oli has one of those sitting on his desk just to smile at every once in a while?

2:39 AM
he don't even need a dupe hammer.

that's not a dupe hammer

Already he own a big mod hammer ...

>.> I'm not sure you're getting the joke. moves along

@hbdgaf yep, a bit confusing..

The term banhammer (sometimes referred to as the banstick or banbomb) began as a satirical term for the power wielded by an administrator to ban or block users of internet forums, wikis, online games, or other internet media. The term is often used as a nickname for the actual anti-cheating software in video games that performs the banning action. == Banning == Punishment is usually a form of ban from the service, either by deleting the guilty party's account or suspending it for a period of time. In extreme cases, the person's IP address may be blocked from the server to prevent them from simply...

2:42 AM
@AvinashRaj yep, sometimes.
@hbdgaf sweet!

yeah. now i have to try out sets made from different things to see which ones i like.

@Seth so far the list of made is hacksaw blades. the list of "to makes" is windshield wipers and cheap stainless knives.
that moment when you're all "why didn't i put that code blob i wrote 5 years ago in source control somewhere"

3:06 AM
@hbdgaf plus a tennis ball, whatever random keys you can find lying around and a triangle file.
your old coke cans would be good too. and a pair of scissors ;p

@Seth no tennis ball required. if you're talking bumping, I saw an interesting demo with a bump key and a hosewasher/oring that worked out well

yeah bumping. Never tried the tennis ball, so can't comment on how it works.

tennis ball is an urban legend. it doesn't work.
also, when did cryptocity.pentest.net go down? i'm so cloning it from waybackmachine to some github django template for posterity

3:20 AM
oh, no idea.
@hbdgaf well well, learn something new every day.

I'm getting a new bike too. Someone stole the last one. I'm welding on poles to this one, so I can attach a car battery with an amp and some jumper cables. I promise when they try to steal this one, I'll get a laugh out of it.

haha, nice idea.

debating on the webcam and a motion activator for it. i might want a video of the dirtbag.
only problem there is, i have to get out of bed to knock the bike off of them with a broom.
... or wait for the battery to go dry ...

@hbdgaf you might know him even, if you live in a sketchier place.

i don't know him. the camp manager noted that someone that was here for a weekend from florida saw "two fellows that probably didn't belong given their skin tone", which is a little sad... but hey. the situation proves the point.
at least in this geographical region.
don't reply to that. no matter what you say, it will be misconstrued later. just let it go.

3:30 AM
yup. moving on.

so, python-ptrace is interesting.

I bet.

if only i could find python-pintool i would be happier... sadly, it's not a thing

right, I see a point there.
but still, they're different questions and I'm not sure they'd work well merged.

that's fair. i tend to oversimplify in favor of funneling people to the same answer.
@CharlesGreen - nice on the reg domain question

Hm. Not sure what I clicked on there. Sorry

I upvoted, but it looks like I'm the only one. I was referring to this askubuntu.com/questions/511362/…

@hbdgaf Thanks. Still no answer to this, although @chili555 had a great suggestion. I'm just exploring the chat section and all of a sudden it beeped at me - I thought I did something weird.

No, you're fine. I just look in to faces I haven't seen before and say "good job" or "WHAT WERE YOU DOING?". you got a good job, so \o/

@CharlesGreen Welcome!

Thanks all.

i know my way of saying thanks for being awesome - you belong here - is a little awkward, but i think you got it. @Seth's is easier... but from all of us: no problem/you're welcome

I need a kali live boot for a class next week
yeah that's basically it :) the command I typed. I just would need to add the options like the block size
dd is so crazy

dd isn't crazy. it's probably the most logical app in existence.

I mean it's crazy how much it can do :)

o/ @Takkat ... I'm waiting for @JourneymanGeek to see the lolpic. I think he'll appreciate it a lot

@hbdgaf it looks like JourneymanGeek's dog anyway ;)

It's a different breed, but they're both toy dogs.

the alligator won't squeak anymore I guess.

Something like that ;)
Think it's more related to dogs being territorial about their toys/bones etc than it is about the gator squeaking... like completely irrationally territorial. Either way though.

I have a computer up with wordpress, been messing around with it

1:48 PM
@Mateo i saw you posted the link earlier, but it stalled when i tried to view it. if renders now though. i'm not the largest fan of anything that runs on php, but it looks nice.

oh, I shut it down after a bit ;) that is why

i sort of want to run a thin django site off my raspi with no-ip or something. then i'll have to get another raspi to run crawls/scans from though ;)
and a third for my "replace my thermostat" project

well a "everything sounds awesome" job post came up, and that was the only thing left on the check list decided to make sure I "knew" it

well good. glad it worked out

@hbdgaf answered

@hbdgaf that would be cool, would be way better then my pentium 4 hp workstation - although it does have wake from lan s5

@Braiam good enough. i was more pleased that they found their issue was reg-domain weirdness, but somehow still wanted to ask how to determine their reg-domain than anything...

I still have a kill switch box for the internet switch and computers ;)

@Mateo that's another thing i think something like a raspi, but not a raspi would be good for. full take pcaps as a network tap at the uplink
option to disconnect the tx/rx pairs etc etc

damn, ants invaded my frutty loops!

replace them with instant grits. your ant problem will resolve

i'm not sure it's misleading. i think the user is just that stupid. it's an either or on how bad that sounds, but it's nicer than "downvote it until it bottoms out"

@JourneymanGeek that was regarding your question about what class needed kali. I don't even know why people would need a GUI to make a bootable disk now. Or maybe those .iso's are just set up for that

Q: What can be done with duplication of answer

PandyaSometimes I found out on single question One answered and after some times another answered which is very similar to 1st, say duplication of 1st answer! Which seens not RigthWay. What actions can be done against duplication? Or what to do with such answer-post?

4:41 PM
@Seth - I'll see your terminal and vim, and raise you GateOne liftoffsoftware.com/Products/GateOne

Tim
@hbdgaf do you ask on meta about a low quality user, or flag each post?

@hbdgaf oh neat!
@Tim Say you did either, what action would you expect us to take?

Tim
well 100% are (I think) pretty low quality - maybe some sort of warning?

If they continue to post low quality answers, and those get downvoted, they will get an automated warning and answer block.

Tim
okay - so do nothing?

4:54 PM
Use your votes ;)
Calling people out on meta is generally not a good idea.
You could flag them, but I doubt much would be done. The system has become pretty automated in this aspect.

Tim
okay then thanks :)

8:14 PM
o/

hmm, now I remember why I stopped running my Linux VM from Windows.

I used to run Ubuntu in Windows 8's Hyper-V.
But it was causing some really bizarre issues.

Ooh, you know what, I bet I have Hyper-V.
I was going to try VB instead of VMWare.

It should be under "Add or Remove Features".

Yup, there it is.
My VMWare one always wanted to disconnect the hard drive for some reason.. blue screening me.

8:21 PM
A couple things to note about VMWare - it absolutely will not run when Hyper-V is installed.
And the free version forbids commercial use.
(That might not be a problem for you, but it was a problem for me.)

oh.. well I need to run VMWare for some school things, so guess Hyper-V is going back in the bag.

Yeah, it's not very obvious - VMWare will just refuse to start. Apparently something Hyper-V does when Windows starts interferes with the VMWare hypervisor.

which is a ripoff :/

There is a workaround.

Consisting of?

8:25 PM
Setting up multiple boot entries for Windows.
Then you need only restart to switch between the two.
I forget the details.

that... doesn't sound like a good plan.
If I have to reboot I might as well boot into Ubuntu ;P

Right :P

8:48 PM
hi

A user, while dist-upgrading, rebooted the machine and now he can only see a black screen. Are dist-upgrade that critical that can break your machine if it doesn't finish?

sometimes.
depends what he was upgrading.
Have him check the logs @Lucio

@Seth do have any idea on this "unable to launch startxfce4 x session --- "startxfce4" not found"

He recovered the data and choose to re-install

@Kalpit could you edit your questions with more details about what went wrong and what you did you get to this point?

8:53 PM
choiced xD

@Lucio upgrades upgrade critical things, like the graphics drivers, the kernel, the display manager, etc.

i have upgraded to new version successfully 14.04 but i am not able to login in GUI mode

Did he try booting an older kernel?
@Kalpit your question says the upgrade wasn't successful.

yeah, he told me while updating. So I asked "Was it distribution update?" and he said yeah

wait, does he mean a release upgrade or a dist-upgrade?

8:55 PM
dist-upgrade thing
which is kind of the same

sorry for that
but i can see that it has upgraded to 14.04.01 and GNU/Linux 3.13.0-34-generic x86_64

@Lucio nope, not the same.

kind of :P

not at all ;)

MeNoTalkYesterday, a friend of mine who works as a purser (chief flight attendant) helped a lady with delivering her baby during a flight to Manila, Philippines while over the ocean :) I know that pregnant ladies after their 7th month (in this particular airlines) are not allowed to travel by air but sh...

And if the plane as well as the baby were just about to cross the border and each had parts of their body on both sides of two countries at the moment of birth, that would add another complexity. Still worse, if a similar thing happened at a point where three or more countires meet, that will be even more complicated. — sawa Sep 14 '12 at 6:33
Lol?

I hope?

10:19 PM
Hello!
@Seth you have an OK from me to burn the comments with fire, hell I'll even provide you the flamethrower to use. Wait on muru if you want, though. Feel free to burn mine though.

already got a confirmation from him too, so burning >:)

@Seth indeed.
@Seth how goes it though, otherwise?
(and yes, I was able to find an answer to that question :P)
(love that I know where to hunt down info :P)

lol
Well, I answered 3 questions in the last couple of days, so I'd say it goes well :D
and you?

10:42 PM
meh
busy
getting ready for college again
just busy
and revamping my network. got a pfSense firewall on the edge, and working on getting the wireless access point now
is redoing his network to be a lot more efficient with higher throughput internally, and with slightly higher externally :)

nice!

@Seth problem is I need $280 right now
can i borrow that :P
loljk
actually i'm getting a netgear Wireless AP to link with the pfSense firewall, but until that's done I'm going to configure my linksys router here to be cascaded with the pfSense firewall

lol

so then it inherits whatever pfSense says
shrugs
at least i'll have gigabit internal :P
I would VLAN this thing out the butt but I don't have the money for a managed switch right now so I'll do it by subnetting, and set things to static (except for the wireless AP)
@Seth unless you have an unused managed switch lying around you could sell to me for cheap... :P

10:58 PM
hmm, nope, no switches.

I think I have the reg unmanaged ones...

Can someone tell me why this edit is approved? Was the edited parted imported from a comment or elsewhere?

@Mateo that'd work for what i need, i can do the rest via static ranges and firewall rules
@Mateo I can get an 8port gigabit unmanaged for $75 but that's still expensive
cheaper than $108 for managed though

Ah gigabit

mhm
i can do with 10/100 but meh
doesn't matter to me :P

11:03 PM
I have a 8 10/100 I think

most of my crap is 10/100 anyways behind the switch, but the wireless AP won't be
well it might be, I dunno, but meh
as long as the firewall is gigabit i get better speeds :)

I'll check when I get home, that and I have friends that keep old hardware around

@muru It was incorporating info from (now deleted) comments.
I know the message didn't say that, but I bet Eliah checked.

@Mateo well cheap is better, I'm shelling out $250 for an enterprise access point so meh
it'll be useful for years to come though :P

@Seth thanks!

11:13 PM
@Seth any thoughts on this? askubuntu.com/q/515618/10698 it's grey-ish since it can be general in terms of how do I find out what hardware is viable, but right now it's really off topic.
@Takkat was this a normal summer day in Germany? i.stack.imgur.com/uHFec.jpg

That is great so far :)

hello!

how are you? long time not to see you

well been busy, summer job etc
my rasp PI crashed the other week after I updated it, really need to find a better storage for it...

11:29 PM
Hm, found my box of casino cards...

@Mateo don't tell me now that you don't smoke

Anyone need a ata with unlocked sip firmware?

@Mateo what's this analog telephone you speak of?!

Runs the sip type of VoIP, you need to setup a sip server then you hook up a old style phone to it

11:44 PM
or you can just use Teamspeak.
via your phone, for the lulz

Like a giant old school magic jack...

RCH has been updated! :)
Bug fixed, and the bigger surprise, a script to test the script.

@Lucio what type of search method is being used in the script?
@Lucio A SCRIPT INSIDE A SCRIPT!?!? MIND BLOWN

@Alvar there is no search actually
lol xD

@Lucio so how do you go through the files and find the strings?

11:48 PM
a simple for does it

OMG
not cool bro
recursion is the way to go
way faster

it is quite cool actually :P

can't be, not with a for loop

:)
I didn't take care of a loot of things, not only efficiency but also special characters and several other things
But I did take care of one thing, documentation and code readability.

@ThomasW. Found it, is a 8 port 10/100

11:51 PM
So it won't hurt anyone to edit and improve it, it is easy!

@Lucio is this python?

@Mateo for sale perhaps with the power adapter included?

(or for free, either or :P)

I really have no idea what it is...

11:52 PM
take a look..

@Lucio i am.. :P

:D

bash

@mateo that'd be all i'd need, i was hunting down a 5 port fast ethernet (10/100) switch on CDW to see if I can get a student discount but meh
but meh

@ThomasW. Still have my email

11:54 PM
@Lucio I normally right in PHP, and used to code in Java... so YOLO

@Mateo I think I misplaced, but you can email me it via my Launchpad page if you prefer. Or at my ubuntu.com address

sorry, what does yolo means? :/
I know what you're trying to say anyway :P

@Lucio YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

O.o

I sorta get what the code does... COOL

11:55 PM
oh I always that was megamind miss saying "hello"

@Alvar thanks!

@Lucio seriously tmp should have a better name, like output
