@terdon My favorite ones are the <Super>+<Number> to open/switch to apps in the launcher. I also use Alt+Tab a bit, but that's standard in almost every DE. Alt+` allows you to switch between windows of the same app as well. The HUD (alt) is also useful sometimes.

If you hold down <Super> it'll show them all to you ;)

@Seth hmm, OK, very different use styles :) Super is broken on my VM (99% sure that's not Unity's fault), I tend to configure specific shortcuts for specific apps anyway and like to keep my own cause I've been using them for years (but tat is a good feature) and Alt breaks Alt+click to move/resize which again, I'm too used to to abandon :)

Oh well, guess I'll go and figure out why super fails. Is it mapped to Alt or WInd by default?

I know in Ubuntu it's mapped pretty low down, so it usually doesn't work well in VMs.

Hmm. exec should just run it in bash (afaik) so you should just be able to export VARIABLE=value && /path/to/executable but I haven't tested it.

@Rinzwind I've edited things that don't quite meet my (usually ridiculously specific) standards. The answers are usually still answering the bulk of the problem though. In the case we're talking about here, the problem really has next to nothing to do with filename matching and everything to do with adding text on the fifth line. I think an op-edit here would be fine. It's not like they'd be changing the core of the answer.

hi guys. I am trying to get ubuntu back to work on my dual boot laptop and I am looking for some help please

this laptop has 2 disks with 500 gb each

windows 8.1 is installed in it, along with a non-working version of Ubuntu 12.10

I tried booting Ubuntu from the livecd and repairing it, but not only did it not work (i.e. it didn't boot from the disk), but it also messed up with windows

Windows is now working back though

well, I'll finish my question and see where I get the fastest answer ;)

so I have it organized like this:

/dev/sda/ and /dev/sdb/

on sda i have sda1 (fat32, labeled win recovery environment); sda2 (ntfs, win8 loader); sda5 (ext4, linux-secure-remix 12.10)

on sdb I have sdb1 and sdb2, both not labeled

oh, and there is also sda6 (labeled as swap)

so I am guessing upon reinstallation, I should choose format and reinstall ubuntu over sda5 right? do you think this will mess up with Win8?

should I just install it over sdb?
