@JorgeCastro was about time :P
@terdon because you don't pass the environment variable MENUPROXY or something
there's a way that you can do, MENUPROXY=none command to make it work
@terdon it could work, but I won't recommend it with the way ubiquity does stuff (remembers that broke his installation because installed Ubuntu and Debian /boot together and Ubuntu in a separated disk)

@Braiam yeah, Gilles answered.
@Braiam really? Cool! Would you post an answer? Mine is really not elegant.

@terdon his answer was a polite "don't do that"

@Braiam heh true, but we were discussing in U&L chat and both he and goldilocks said it should be possible.
@Braiam looks like it's UBUNTU_MENUPROXY
Yup, this works:
 UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=0 gvim

@terdon yeah, that

12:22 AM
@Braiam do you want to post an answer or should I add it to mine?

12:34 AM
@terdon nah, add it in yours since yours is accepted, also I would edit the title into something more general like "how to prevent an application from using the global menu?"

Fair enough
Done

I wanted to ask, I have an answer that now says community wiki is that normal?

Yeah, you see, you edited it so many times it became Community Wiki.

that is what I thought happened

It's in the revision history ;)

12:48 AM
I am glad it is over

I know what it's like ;)

when we can not open a chat because they do not have enough reputation is it okay to use comments or should they go some where else to get help, just asking because a lot of wireless issues end up long

no, comments is fine. Always try to integrate it into your post and flag for a mod to clean up when you're done though :)

okay, that is good
thank you

Keep up the good work!
@terdon I like it :)

1:00 AM
@Seth it is pretty, I'll give you that. Seems very unstable to me (but that may be a VM issue) but getting an "Unity experienced an internal error" type message on a Linux machine reminds me of why I left Windows 15 years ago :)

1:28 AM
@terdon It's also got the best keyboard shortcuts I've seen in any DE, but I will admit it is a bit unstable.

1:40 AM
@Seth does it? You mean out of the box? I never use them. I've been using the same basic shortcuts since the days of WindowMaker and I always set them up on any new DE I try. Some examples?

@terdon hey, if it looks like and sounds like... Might be close enough.

@Mateo :)

@terdon My favorite ones are the <Super>+<Number> to open/switch to apps in the launcher. I also use Alt+Tab a bit, but that's standard in almost every DE. Alt+` allows you to switch between windows of the same app as well. The HUD (alt) is also useful sometimes.
If you hold down <Super> it'll show them all to you ;)

@Seth hmm, OK, very different use styles :) Super is broken on my VM (99% sure that's not Unity's fault), I tend to configure specific shortcuts for specific apps anyway and like to keep my own cause I've been using them for years (but tat is a good feature) and Alt breaks Alt+click to move/resize which again, I'm too used to to abandon :)
Oh well, guess I'll go and figure out why super fails. Is it mapped to Alt or WInd by default?

The Windows key.
I know in Ubuntu it's mapped pretty low down, so it usually doesn't work well in VMs.

1:53 AM
Oh @Seth do you have any idea how one can pass an environment value in the exec call of a .desktop file?
re this:

Q: How can I launch a specific application bypassing the global menu in Unity?

memilanukSo, trying to get up to speed with LaTex in vim/gvim... problem is the beginners tutorial for vim-latexsuite assumes gvim and the gui menus. Okay, got gvim right here. Problem is, under Unity and the global app menu, the menus are truncated and don't show the keyboard shortcuts that they should f...

Hmm. exec should just run it in bash (afaik) so you should just be able to export VARIABLE=value && /path/to/executable but I haven't tested it.
or am I misunderstanding?

@Seth nope, tried that. I don't think it runs in bash, isn't the gnome shell launching those directly?
Hmm, might work if I have it run in a terminal.

@terdon exec= env VAR=val command

@Braiam Brilliant! You did it again :)

2:00 AM
Hey can someone help me?

@Braiam Awesome!
@AnnonomusPerson Don't ask to ask man ;P

I just updated Ubuntu (12.4 IIRC) and updated all of the packages. It's frozen while rebooting, stuck on my desktop background only.... not even a mouse. I haven't been on it for a bit, so laugh at me for having 480 updates....
@Seth That's like my trademark enter a chatroom line...
In the process of upgrading to 13.10, don't worry.

@AnnonomusPerson Did it reboot and drop you at a desktop or did it never quite shutdown?

@Seth Never quite shut down.

Can you get into a tty? (Ctrl+Alt+F1)

2:03 AM
I don't have time to ask a question... I might have to hard reset it when I go to bed in a hour or so.
@Seth Nope.

@Braiam any real reason why that worked but the other didn't? (export)?

@Seth the env

@AnnonomusPerson Than there isn't much you can do but a hard restart. And update more often next time ;)
@terdon ahh

@AnnonomusPerson hang on, why is your desktop background being shown in the middle of rebooting?

@Seth Yeah it's an old wubi install that I haven't messed with for ages but I'm switching...
@terdon I don't know.

2:05 AM
@Seth .desktop files are magical things, akin to unicorns ;)
@Seth ? got a Q that that answered?

Hard reset done.

@Braiam terdon sorta did. Already answered, but he was improving it.

Wait... is my Windows partion gone?!?!?

@AnnonomusPerson but is it restarting, as in it has shut down and is now booting or did it never shutdown?

@AnnonomusPerson yuck, WUBI was pretty bad :-/
@terdon It started to shutdown, but froze after everything but the desktop background disappeared.

2:07 AM
@Seth IK just don't want to loose windows yet... and don't have time to do a proper install.

@Seth OK, now I get it.

Logging in now yay.

@terdon btw, lots of comments on your answer there, can any of them be removed?

Got desktop thanks.

@terdon btw, you might find this useful.

2:08 AM
@AnnonomusPerson err... I would say only one thing: WUBI is the source of all your problems ;)

@Braiam I'll do a proper install later just wanting to get a decent OS on an old XP machine I have... XP side barley usable and I had wubi installed.
From like ten years ago... IIRC it was something with updating too why I ditched it lol :)

@Seth kill this askubuntu.com/review/close/234846 I won't waste a close vote ;)
btw, is a bug ;)
wait... that's freaking old!

done
@AnnonomusPerson I'm not sure WUBI existed 10 years ago..

@Seth I think wubi came out with Ubuntu, I remember hearing about it when Ubuntu first started to make a buzz.
nope, I'm wrong:
> Initial release April 24, 2008
According to wikipedia
Still, 6 =~ 10 if you're rounding :)

2:36 AM
@terdon that's way too round

@terdon lol.

Q: Difference between pure and impure function?

Minato NamikazeI assumed that pure functions must always have a return type(ie, must not be void) and must have the same output regardless of the state of the object and that Impure functions change the state of the object or print the state of the object. But the textbook I use states that "An accessor usuall...

@Seth and you said UL star wall was boring:

@Braiam well, it hasn't been this interesting since the troll attack.

3:15 AM
@Braiam lol.
@terdon troll attack?

@Seth You had the same guy here. Deranged tin foil hat style, liked to post his questions in stanzas using BR became very aggressive when contradicted
I think I'd flagged him here to let you guiys know but that was before you were a mod I guess.

@terdon You mean, err Utkarsh? Or someone else?
There have been a lot of trolls here lately :(

@MinatoNamikaze He already said it wasn't him.

He tended to have userNNNNN usernames and then a few offensive ones.

@Seth can you run ubuntu server without keyboard mouse or monitor just the computer

@HarrisRubin depends on the hardware. Some systems won't boot without a keyboard attached. But yes, I had a box sitting in my living room for a while

@terdon

3:49 AM
?

^^
I installed ubuntu server on a usb and when i boot i get Non-System disk or disk error

@HarrisRubin That sounds like a good question for the main site
If you add a lot more detail that is

even though it is on a 2002 pc
brb
ter
@terdon what detail

@HarrisRubin I mean you should post a question on the main site, but give details such as: the version of Ubuntu you are installing, how you installed onto the USB drive, what kind of usb drive, what tool you used to install it, what hardware you are installing on, the exact words of the error etc etc

@terdon I am trying to install ubuntu 12.04 server on my old 2002 HP 268900-999 desktop. I made a start up usb using the live disk creator in Ubuntu 13.10.
I am trying to install ubuntu 12.04 server on my old 2002 HP 268900-999 desktop. I made a start up usb using the live disk creator in Ubuntu 13.10. I set the computer to boot to USB first in the BIOS but when I boot I get a Non-System Disk Error" or "Disk Error" Appears on Black Screen. The usb works on a different computer, what am I doing wrong?

4:08 AM
@HarrisRubin I don't know. That's why I asked you to post a question on the main site. We're a Q&A site, it's what we do.
And you did, cool, thanks

you know it is a cool question which deserves a +1
which also deserves a answer
@terdon i have a usb keybaord plugged in and a mouse should i unplug that

@HarrisRubin it got it!
No answer cause I honestly can't give you one. I gave you my best suggestion as a comment. And no, mouse and keyboard should be fine

ok should i still reply to the comment

@HarrisRubin no need. The comments are there just to give you suggestions. Only reply if they are direct questions and in most cases you should reply by editing your post anyway.

i can't able to get that.

plz be careful while replying others.
you can't able to view that.

@AvinashRaj ok where

was it a question or answer

4:44 AM
Answer.

when did you answer it

i think 2 weeks before

@basketball chill out! The "2 hours ago" you see there are not the time the answer was posted but the time it was deleted.
@AvinashRaj remember that 20k rep users have the right to vote to delete downvoted answers, if that one had a negative score it might have been deleted with no mod intervening.

@terdon no,i think it has 4 upvotes.
Mod does that.I think it's because of duplicate.
@terdon it reverted back.

@AvinashRaj reverted? Undeleted?

4:58 AM
yes.

Cool then :)
And I think 20kers can delete upvoted questions as long as their current score is >=-2

thanks.
you mean answer score of +2

5:14 AM
@AvinashRaj No, I meant score <=-2, sorry. If an answer has a score of -2 or less, 20k users can delete it. At least that seems to be the case on Unix & Linux and Super User (and Biology but that's beta, it only takes 4k) where I have enough rep to do so.
-1 or lower actually

single >20k user can delete that or it needs 5 20k users to delete that post.

Not sure how many, but more than one. You have delete votes, like close votes, only there is no queue.
@AvinashRaj it takes 3:

@mods should I flag the comments on this post as unconstructive, or should we keep them, or can you guys clean the comments out. We could keep them for reference's sake, but I think several important comments were already deleted so it is hard to understand the flow. meta.askubuntu.com/questions/8646/…

@fossfreedom Am i wrong?

@don.joey - I can't face spending an hour reading all that (!) - cleaned

@fossfreedom super. thanks.
@fossfreedom I have flagged a related q (I think) on meta: meta.askubuntu.com/questions/8672/…
@fossfreedom hmm... I gave it some thought and probably I would not be a good thing to delete that question... too many people have voted for the question.

9:07 AM
@don.joey but i'm not try to insult him.Now only i have seen all the comments.If it is not good for community, then i'm ready to put close vote on that.

The question is a fair question - the position of a mod is a site matter and thus meta is appropriate

@fossfreedom @AvinashRaj Points taken. After voting to close, I thought the same thing.
close vote retracted

@AvinashRaj the meta question is a little strange itself - but rather than adding responses in comments - suggest add an answer yourself

@fossfreedom i think no need for a meta question, a simple chat would be enough for that.
@fossfreedom he deleted his comment.He says "Good,let's wait for a mod answer".

hi guys! I need some help: I have dualboot in this laptop, but Ubuntu is failing to load
I get a bunch load of errors "EXT4-fs error device sda5 ext4_iget:3877"
and ubuntu doesn't load
could someone please help me please?

suggest boot from a live cd/usb and do a filesystem check as per askubuntu.com/questions/14740/…

hi @fossfreedom, long time no see! ok ok, I'll try!
(just to make sure:)by livecd you mean a normal ubuntu installation cd right?

yep - use the "try ubuntu" option not the "install ubuntu option"

ok ok!

obviously!

I would suggest no @AvinashRaj

@fossfreedom Yup, saw your note. Tell me.

tell me what?

You seem to have asked to visit the chat room to discuss. Discuss what?

10:34 AM
hmm? You seem to be saying something about mod actions - I want to know what is the issue

What did I say about mod actions?
The issue is clearly mentioned in the question that I posted.

going in circles
what did you mean by "So it seems that some of my comments were flagged and removed. I commented that the community did right by not electing the OP referenced in the question as a moderator. With mods like these ..."

Oh ok, what I meant was that I wanted to post my previous comment again.
The previous comment (you would still have access to it!) was something like: "Good that the community didn't elect you as the mod. With mods like these..."

I'm asking lots of questions trying to understand your thoughts - so forgive me. What has the OP running for election got to do with the question you posed?

You should do some bit of research yourself: Look at the useless comments posted by the OP on the answer that I posted.

Dan
@AvinashRaj I would say yes, since you added a summary of the comments to the question

@Dan yes, i posted
because
see the revisions
i clearly mentioned
"I want to append a string " Good Morning " on the 5th line of multiple text files(file1.txt,file2.txt,file3.txt,file4.txt) using a single terminal command"
only 4 files
he answered this
command
sed -i '5s/.*/Good morning/' ~/Desktop/*
is this applies to that 4 files only?
so i put comment on his answer and added that comment to my question for better understanding.

Dan
@AvinashRaj no it doesn't

Oli
@AvinashRaj Just find the right line between demanding something of people and asking them if they could give you a better answer. Your comment seems is a little shouty.
When you start paying us for answers, you can be more demanding :)
2

oh, i added "please" on that.

10:52 AM
To add to what @Oli said, with your rep you are assumed to have a minimal understanding using which you could manipulate the arguments being passed to the program.

i can manipulate it.I put comments on that for only future readers.
> demanding something of people and asking them if they could give you a better answer.

That would be a different question, IMO.

ok sorry for that.

Dan
@AvinashRaj The thing is, his answer is understandable. This is the great part of SE that you edit the answer yourself to make it better.
all you need to do is replace the last star in this command sed -i '5s/.*/Good morning/' ~/Desktop/* with the last code he wrote file{1..4}.txt

i think it's not the job of op to edit an answer.

10:58 AM
@AvinashRaj Ill go 1 further: the OP should -never- edit an answer he did not make.

@AvinashRaj anybody including the OP can edit the answer - at least to improve it. I've done this in the past on my questions.

Oli
@devnull Just pushed an edit to separate the expansion side of things from just how sed allows multiple files.
@Rinzwind Really?

Dan
@Rinzwind I disagree, not everyone can express him/her self. We aren't all excellent at english

@Oli yes. To avoid the impression OP is pushing for an acceptable answer.

@Oli I saw that. Thanks.

Dan
11:00 AM
@Rinzwind but as long it's not changing the "meaning" of the post, then why not? You would be improving the quality of the answer

@Dan that does not imply the OP has to edit the answer ;-)

@Rinzwind I'm rather new on AU, but I'd say that your understanding of SO in general isn't quite correct.

@devnull who are you? And why can I not have my own set of rules?

@Rinzwind Feel free to have your own set of rules. Right now, you're attempting to thrust those on others.

very simple: if an answer is not to my liking I do not accept it. I do not edit the answer to make it acceptable. A wrong answer (one that has wrong instructions) to me is -not- acceptable.

Oli
11:03 AM
@Rinzwind I've edited things that don't quite meet my (usually ridiculously specific) standards. The answers are usually still answering the bulk of the problem though. In the case we're talking about here, the problem really has next to nothing to do with filename matching and everything to do with adding text on the fifth line. I think an op-edit here would be fine. It's not like they'd be changing the core of the answer.

@devnull where do I do that? I am only expressing -my- opinion in a chat box. I am not posting my opionion as a mod. nor do I express my opionion in meta
@Oli but I myself would favor an edit from someone else (ie. the owner of the answer) over an edit by the OP
THAT to me would make the answer acceptible.
(mind you: the answer gets the accepted vote; so the person answering should be the one going for that acceptible answer)

come on, is friday

@Braiam not on the whole world
oh wait

Oli
@Rinzwind Almost.

6 minutes past 12 :D

Oli
11:07 AM
In 54 minutes, it'll be Friday everywhere.

@Oli yeah just noticed it is past 12 so probably 54 minutestill we all are
lol
oh and I also do not expect anyone to follow my reasoning ;-) I aint a mod and I do not own SE >:=D Nor do I want to at the moment
All I want is 200 rep today >:) and that is not happening

@Rinzwind i also want 25 rep only. to reach 10k :-)

@AvinashRaj tsk 10k
come back when you catch Oli >:-D

oh,, where is the fastest 10k users list?

Hmmm Luis is getting closer to me :P
@AvinashRaj no idea. is there one?

11:16 AM
@Rinzwind your'e on the 2nd place in that list.
1st izx.

when I started I answered any question I knew the answer too and searched all the ones I did not know :P

i suspect both of them.Now their accounts are suspended.
i don't know why people are doing like this.
Both of them are above 3k .

11:39 AM
Hmmm ... how many times can the same person be suspended? And stood for elections as well. It seems very important to get high rep.
Of course, after last suspension a name change may have put a few on the wrong track.

Dan
Pfft I'm the fastest in earning rep! I got 2.1k in 3 years! :p

Oli
@DKBose This is not something we really want to comment on. People broke the rules, people were punished. How we handle that and how long we tolerate repeat offenders really depends on the case at hand.

is that the packages starting with lib are library packages?

Oli
@AvinashRaj In general, yes
libreoffice* being the obvious exceptions (there are probably a couple more like that)

11:59 AM
@Oli fair enough and all the best.

Avinash RajI want to get the list of installed library packages only from terminal. Is there any command for that?

but i think the files ending with .so are not library files.

see the answer ;)
And now with example

but it displays symlinks also blahblah------------> /.........//////

what you only want the 1st column?

what's the diff between libfiles and lib packages.Both are same?

I shouldn't have sad anything. Serial down voting: askubuntu.com/users/36315/blade19899?tab=reputation -__-

@Rinzwind i want something like
dpkg --get-selections | grep ^lib

Oli
@AvinashRaj What are they?
What is a library to you? What are you looking for?

@Oli
dpkg -l | awk '($1 == "ii") && ($2 ~ /^lib|lib$/)' | awk '{ print $2 }'
it will be more clear i think

Oli
12:33 PM
@AvinashRaj Well you wouldn't use a second awk, you'd just stick { print $2 } on the end. I've edited my answer.

ok
but that command works.
i'm going to give the choice to the users.
:-)

Oli
@AvinashRaj That's how.

oli may i add it on the answer.

@Oli, can you look at this. Possible serial down voting

@blade19899 wait till 3:00 and will be reversed without mod action ;)

Wait, so getting the 10K tools doesn't let me do anything more than just add flags?

hi guys. I am trying to get ubuntu back to work on my dual boot laptop and I am looking for some help please
this laptop has 2 disks with 500 gb each
windows 8.1 is installed in it, along with a non-working version of Ubuntu 12.10
I tried booting Ubuntu from the livecd and repairing it, but not only did it not work (i.e. it didn't boot from the disk), but it also messed up with windows
Windows is now working back though

@Sosi you can ask here, because this Room is empty chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/26/unix-and-linux

so I am just trying to reinstall ubuntu and replace the non-working cop
well, I'll finish my question and see where I get the fastest answer ;)
so I have it organized like this:

/dev/sda/ and /dev/sdb/
on sda i have sda1 (fat32, labeled win recovery environment); sda2 (ntfs, win8 loader); sda5 (ext4, linux-secure-remix 12.10)
