@Braiam why did you edit my post askubuntu.com/questions/139994/…

He fixed the grammar and formatting.

@HarrisRubin that is how the site works ;) we fix things.

Does someone knows a repository for use cases?
I use GitHub for code stuff but I don't know how to share designs, models and documentation between devs..

@Lucio for models, just upload an .stl

4:55 AM
Hello. I have installed Ubuntu on my usb drive as a live system using Yumi (Your Universal Multiboot Installer). I set a persistence for 3 gigs. Didn't save a thing. Help?

@MinatoNamikaze what is that?
Do you mean, upload the file used for the software that the team is using (EA, or whatever)?

5:41 AM
@Lucio What sort of models are we talking?

1 hour later…
6:43 AM
@lucio: You found our repository :)

Flipkart's SSL cert breaking for anyone else?
@AvinashRaj --^

wait

@Lucio I think that's a feature that is pretty much lacking everywhere. It would make an awesome add-on to trello, but it would also take away from the super-simmplicity of trello making it a different thing.

@MinatoNamikaze

hmm
something seems off

6:49 AM
for your's only
@MinatoNamikaze are you in exam holidays?

No :P
Comp exam tomorrow.. so using comp :P

Oli
@Rishee Just about

hey I wanted to clarify one thing
from the man page: -l Note that this does not disable the account. The user may still be able to login using another authentication token (e.g. an SSH key). To disable the account, administrators should use usermod --expiredate 1 (this set the account's expire date to Jan 2, 1970). — Levon Feb 6 at 21:43
if you go to this question and check the last comment on the answer that I posted .... is that right or wrong ... I could not find any information from Ubuntu wiki about it...? can you let me know how true is it?

8:27 AM
@Oil can you please check below question
I just asked it on forum
0
Q: How to install and configure Dynamic VLAN Server?

RisheeI have below setup: Firewall: Fortinet 240D *Core Switches are 2 one is Juniper EX 4200 & second one is EX 3300* I want to configure Dynamic VLAN Server on Ubuntu Linux 12.04.3 Kernel and CPU: Linux 3.8.0-32-generic on i686 I have confirmed with Junniper technical support that EX3300 & EX4200...

@Oli hay are you there?

Oli
@Rishee Yeah, your last ping didn't work because you didn't spell my name correctly :)

@Oli Sorry pal :) can you please check those 2 concerns that I had... plzzz

8:43 AM
Does Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty tahr have a official logo yet?

@Alvar i had used the correct code tag.

Oli
The first is true (I've been testing it). And I know nothing about VLANs except roughly what they are.

9:04 AM
@Oli Thanks for confirmingthe answer posted on first question. Do you know anyone who is on this forum, who should be able to answer that VLAN Question? I can drop him a message to look at this question then or ping him for the same... :)

@AvinashRaj you used <pre> and it looked wrong. it's better to highlight the code with the code tag it looks better ..

what's the code tag? you mean <code></code>

now click the code tag

````
^ this
you have a row extra ...
9:16 AM
Like this
can't see it in chat....
Oli
@AvinashRaj Not sure about the instance but use the Markdown formatting when you can. That's four spaces before every line for the <pre><code> equivalent. There's a button on the toolbar that lets you format a chunk of text (or Control+K will call it too)
with the pre method you get an extra line and it looks strange ..
@Oli four spaces before each line was so harder for me.But <pre> simplifies the task.
Oli
@AvinashRaj As I say, the site has javascript that simplifies this into a non-issue (actually makes it easier than using pres and makes the source easier to read too)
9:20 AM
@Oli ctrl + k does superbly.
Oli
Write the code
Highlight the code
Click the icon or press Control+K. Done.
9:49 AM
why i have to add commands askubuntu.com/questions/433591/…
Oli
@AvinashRaj I'm not sure you have to "add commands" but it wouldn't hurt to explain how you "just mount the windows partition".
@Oli Hey do you know anyone from this forum who can help me with that VLAN question?
Oli
10:25 AM
@Rishee Not explicitly. It's a fairly specialist area. If you don't get an answer organically (or through a bounty), you might have more luck in a more specialised Stack Exchange site like Server Fault or the new Network Engineering site.
again a nice question Oli :D
where?
@AvinashRaj frontpage has 1 q from Oli >:)
10:54 AM
@Oli Thanks pal :)
Q: My ubuntu background is totally black, even after opening programs such as terminal
Hans Jakob VikMy Ubuntu background is totally black when I log in. I can open the terminal, write command so that i open other programs, but I am unable to see any of it. Can somebody please help me!
12:01 PM
@AvinashRaj - thanks for that - just to say - if you see spam - shout "SPAM" and flag it. Please do not link it here since Google has a habit of linking to this sort of stuff very quickly.
its immediate if you shout "SPAM" here
Oli
@AvinashRaj Please stop deleting all your messages. It makes us (me, at least) really suspicious when I come into a room and there's just a big list of deleted stuff and it takes me a while to go through it all to make sure you're not (for example) just insulting people and deleting the message.
ohh sorry :-)
never do it again :-)
12:25 PM
shift printscreen it Oli! :=)
it's so easy to get rep on SO meta
@MinatoNamikaze Curious why people don't just make their own... AFAIK "speakers behind paintings" is not a new idea and the Raspi integration is hardly a leap.
Q: How to use Ubuntu Server with LAMP?
KartikI have installed Ubuntu Server with LAMP on a VM (in VirtualBox). Now when I boot into the server, it only shows me a terminal. I have never done networking before, so I have no idea what to do with it. So please tell me how to use it. I just want a website running on my virtual network. Details...
1:51 PM
Got my new phone!
Now to backup everything from my old one...
Where is the Q/A on AU? can't seem to find it.
Hi
What is software "rate" in software center,
Hello everybody
2:06 PM
Anyone tried that nymgo?
2:17 PM
^Her reply: Really? -_-
People booted up the computer and just sat there, unsure what to do next.
That's when we decided to label the System button "Start".
It says, "You dummy. Click here." And it sent our usability numbers through the roof, because all of a sudden, people knew what to click when they wanted to do something.
lol
@mods, if bruno needs R&R time, then this should not be featured on askubuntu. can you feature something else to make sure it is no longer part of the community bullitin? Just out of respect for Bruno. meta.askubuntu.com/questions/8672/…
What's a R&R time? I might not mind.
rest and something else :)
I don't remember
2:30 PM
Now I get it. I actually found the question out of taste myself. Too nosy. etc
Maybe we should delete it?
And I dont know how to remove it from the community bulletin.. :/
@jokerdino just feature a bunch of other things (add the 'feature' tag to them) and it will disappear automatically
@don.joey that military thing right?
Since no mod has reacted to that question, I consider the answer to be unofficial anyway
2:32 PM
rest and recuperation
Hmm, I'll let someone else handle it then?
@MinatoNamikaze makes sense
"what's wrong Ask Ubuntu?" You must be kidding
Is there anybody that has installed 14.04 unstable release?
I really like the new features that were added.
There are some really good answers in that specially the answer by rolfl http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/8333/unanswered-questions-what-to-do/8575#8575
Disclaimer: I like charts, so that's probably why I liked that answer :p
If I have two internet connections into my debian (3G + LAN), how to I check that their IP connections to the intertubes are different?
ooooh, now the screen-is-locked-please-insert-password screen looks just like the login screen.
2:58 PM
She kicked me twice
I did curl --interface eth0 checkip.dyndns.org , and got a response, but curl --interface ppp0 didn't
which means you can change songs, volume, keyboard layout and see what dates are bolded in your calendar without logging in
perhaps a little more concerningly, it means that you can open an arbitrary amount of character map windows for the user to find when they unlock their screen.
are you on Unity's or gnome-shell's place?
@jokerdino Unity
great
3:10 PM
rhythmbox shows Rhythmbox requires to install plugins to play media files of the following type: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) decoder error.
is that i had to install ubuntu restricted extras?
@AvinashRaj yep - install that package and that should resolve that error
@foss it's about 75 MB of data i need to download.Is there any possibilities to download and install the required packages for Rhythmbox only.
When rhythmbox complains - just click the install button and it should install the codec package for you
hola
Dan
should we flag old unanswered question which are now about EOL releases as off topic?
like this one for example: askubuntu.com/questions/197048/…
3:25 PM
if you delete a post that has +1 do you lose reputation
@AvinashRaj not sure about the individual package itself since I only install the restricted-extras - possibly its just this one gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3
@MarcoCeppi
@HarrisRubin yes
@MarcoCeppi should we flag EOS posts
@HarrisRubin if they are new and don't have an accepted answer already, yes
3:28 PM
@Dan this was covered by this meta that funnily enough @Marco answered ... but still awaiting the query (!) - meta.askubuntu.com/questions/6645/…
Ah, I shouuld probably go write that query
Hello death guys.
@MarcoCeppi or you are a bot.
@xiaodongjie yes?
3:35 PM
@MarcoCeppi cant you remove the questions that I flagged so i get more
@HarrisRubin you won't get more that way
@xiaodongjie there are no bots in the Ask Ubuntu chat room
@MarcoCeppi ok, then can you help me? or you are a bot.
@MarcoCeppi do you get rep for flagging
@MarcoCeppi beep boop
where is @FlackBot when you need it
3:36 PM
@xiaodongjie don't ask to ask, just ask your question
@HarrisRubin no rep
I have no idea if I can help you or not, without knowing the issue
@MarcoCeppi yes, In System settings/Printer,
Also, other people might be able to help, so just ask the question and we'll see if anyone can help
If not, there's a great site to ask questions on
with an even larger audience
@MarcoCeppi what is the "Ink/Toner Level"?
3:38 PM
@xiaodongjie that's how much ink i s in the printer as reported by your printer
@MarcoCeppi and then, Due to modify the value, I can't get any modify at print.
@xiaodongjie I don't know what that means, could you try explaining it in a different way?
@MarcoCeppi what about it?
@MarcoCeppi It's died?
@MarcoCeppi I could not get driver tarball.
@MarcoCeppi Can you help me?
@MarcoCeppi But It's not in Ubuntu repository.
@MarcoCeppi cant you just remove all posts with tag of 12.10 or earlier
@HarrisRubin what do you mean?
3:44 PM
to get rid of EOL post
@HarrisRubin I still use 12.04
Dan
12.04 is not EOL
@xiaodongjie 12.04 is not EOL
@HarrisRubin EOL? what?
Dan
3:46 PM
End Of Life (means it's no longer supported)
why does command line say 1 package not upgraded
Dan
@HarrisRubin It means you one package that can be upgraded
@Dan how
Dan
try running sudo apt-get upgrade
3:48 PM
@Dan i ran apt-get upgrade
The following packages have been kept back:
usb-modeswitch-data
Don't use apt-get upgrade, or your system is broken. In my experiences.
@xiaodongjie ?????
@HarrisRubin Why remove those posts though?
They are EOL and have noi answers\\
@HarrisRubin so? What if I'm using an older version?
3:57 PM
@terdon then you should upgfrade as it is not supported
They should be closed, not deleted
@HarrisRubin what if I have older hardware? What if this is a production system and I have 1863 users who need a specific version of some piece of software? What if I don't have time to upgrade?
still it is not supported anymore
So?
I posted this question in June 2013. We are in March 2014. Is there any solution?
Q: Fade in after inactive mode
Ionică BizăuUsing Brightness & Lock I can set the time when the computer will go to inactive mode: Turn screen off when inactive for [1 minute]. After the time set, the screen fades out and then it becomes black, completely. When I move the mouse or I press a key it turns on, again. Is there any p...
4:01 PM
That's a good reason not to install it but if you have to use it for other reasons, you're stuck with it.
@MarcoCeppi I assume you mean only those questions about older versions that have no answer right?
@IonicăBizău there are two answers on tnhat post
@HarrisRubin also, most issues are not version specific so most questions and their answers will still be applicable. Why loose useful content?
@HarrisRubin Yes, but no one contains a real solution.
Q: Why my answer is deleted?
HadiCould I know the reason of deleting my answer for this question Use terminal to translate some text? I know that there exist a similar question but that appears after I answered.. Moreover why you can't just merger the questions?! Why did you delete +4 upvoted answer?!
@IonicăBizău probably not possible, no. The fade out is presumably handled by the screensaver daemon and I don't think that supports fade in.
4:05 PM
@terdon Even I want to modify its source code and recompile it? Or maybe replacing screensaver daemon with another alternative...
I would really like such an effect...
@IonicăBizău modifying the source might be an option but I'm guessing you also need a desktop environment that supports fade in and what you're asking for is not trivial.
You can always flag your post for mod attention and ask them to migrate it to another SE site. Unix & Linux for example.
Yes, why was that deleted? I was really happy with that Q&A, great tool. It should have been closed, but not deleted!
@terdon Where is the source code of that daemon stored?
@IonicăBizău depends on which one you're using. The classic ones are xscreensaver daemon and gnome-screensaver. Not sure if Ubuntu/Unity has another one. In either case, you can either download the source with apt-get source package_name or just search for its homepage.
4:10 PM
@terdon a) the answer was an exact duplicate of an answer on the duplicate question. b) answers on dupe questions break the auto forward.
Those are the basic reasons.
@Seth it was? Ah, I thought he moved his answer there after his own post was deleted. Could you explain b)?
Oli
@terdon Duplicates without answers will automatically push people at the master question if the user comes in through Google et al.
But not if it has an answer
OK, but so do dupes with answers right?
Nope.
4:12 PM
Hang on, I'll go try this and see what you guys mean.
In any case, his answer on the dupe was posted after his answer on his own Q so it wasn't a duplicate until the original was deleted right?
@Rinzwind tsk - tsk - answered
@terdon nope. Got a flag before anything had happened
@Seth I see, thanks. I can't figure out what you mean about google and dupes though. Am I supposed to be automatically redirected to the dupe?
@terdon yes - StackExchange will resolve page links to the correct Question
remember most traffic to SE sites is via search engines
@fossfreedom So if I do a search and click on an SE post with no answers that is closed as a dupe to another, I won't see the closed one but will automatically be redirected to the dupe? Damn, been an SE fanatic for 2 years now and I've never noticed that. Thanks guys.
4:18 PM
yep - its magic!
@fossfreedom you wouldn't happen to know the meta post describing this by any chance? Searching through meta.so now and I can't find one.
(and man, your avatar takes me back...)
@terdon Danger mouse? ;)
@MinatoNamikaze yeah, used to love that show :)
@terdon I'm sure there is a better Q&A - quick google (!) found this meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/125220/…
@fossfreedom perfect, thanks. I was silly enough to search for dupe instead of duplicate
4:37 PM
Hi guys
How to create a debian package.
I have a C File.
@xiaodongjie - lots of your contributions on chat is to ask what would be perfectly valid questions on the site - why don't you do this?
oh lookie!
the Unity 8 desktop PPA! Now... without mouse and keyboard support
@badp the packages in there are super out of date
@MarcoCeppi I noticed.
@fossfreedom oh, I see.
I see.
4:57 PM
@Braiam why?
NONONONO, never change ownership of the root directory — Braiam 37 mins ago
it's not root directory.He already created 2 extra ext4 partitions.The created partitions are in read only mode.That's why we answered to change the ownership from root to $USER .
@AvinashRaj I'm not saying that...
then
@AvinashRaj the OP has a single partition at the moment which means that the answer @Braiam commented on would change the ownership of / and would either break the system or, if it doesn't open a HUGE security hole. That's what /etc/fstab options are for
5:13 PM
> After that I created two more partitions using gparted
@terdon
> I tried to edit the permissions, but its showing message like only a root user can do it.So feeling exhausted I reverted it back to single partition again.
@terdon sorry, not fully readed the question.
@AvinashRaj your answer is also wrong, that will change the ownership of files not partitions. The right way do do this is visa fstab options
i think fstab make the change permanent.
5:28 PM
@AvinashRaj exactly. Your answer changes nothing but the ownership of existing files and folders
UUID=xxxxxxxx mount point ext4 errors=remount-rw 0 1
VaraquilexASUS N550JV I need to boot to a Linux installation, however, in order to do that, I must disable "Launch CSM" option in boot menu. @AvinashRaj see my answer
wow.
@terdon is that no need to change the owner?
@AvinashRaj not of the files, no.
5:43 PM
owner is root but we can access it in rw mode
am i correct?
@AvinashRaj yes, and no. There is no owner for the partition really. rw means that you can write to it, once this is done, ownership will depend on the normal chmod/chown actions
Actually, you just need defaults (I updated). The user will be able to read/write because he has rw access to the mount point and the partition is not mounted in read-only mode.
so that you give the mount point permissions(chmod a+wrx) read,write,execute for all.
6:00 PM
@AvinashRaj exactly
go to sleep :-)
There was a command to run a command over a specific date, so the app can be on future or past
Does someone remember it?
6:55 PM
man at
No manual entry for at
@Braiam that is only to set a cron job
I'm not talking about that
dunno then, ask in UL room
Could you give me the link? I suck finding rooms
"How to run a command over a specific date?"
@Seth do you think that this title is fine?
I'm very rough with english.
7:16 PM
"How to run a command with a specific date?"
^seems better
7:36 PM
@Lucio no its not, at has nothing to do with cron. What exactly do you want to do?
Something like this?
terdon@oregano ~ $ echo "ls > ~/output.txt" | at 20:39
warning: commands will be executed using /bin/sh
man I just totally flunked the easiest review
@Lucio No, not really. I can't understand what you mean there. Got a link to the question and I can rephrase the title.
@Lucio A little better, but I don't know what you mean by "with a date". atm I'm supposing you mean "on a certain date"
errrg. I missed all of UDS again.
9:07 PM
@Seth it's recorded, fwiw
Yeah I know.. Not the same as actually being there though :(
Yes. Actually rubbing elbows with people who are smarter than you over drinks (or not if you're not old enough) is always fun.
@Mateo - I'm thinking about that ani-gif to plymouth theme now... gah for wanting to do too many little apps, but this one should be super quick and stupid simple.
@hbdgaf would be cool, thought of a name for it?
@Mateo Not really. Still want to go back to CamCastic, but I was kind of getting bored with it and needed a change. I'll go back to it soon-ish probably.
gif-a-tizer, lolstart,
9:15 PM
The demo theme conversion would be the matrixgl screensaver captured as an animated gif. Would make a neat-ish boot screen. And who DOESN'T like the matrix? right?
yeah
Gif2Plymouth is what I was thinking. I mean... it says it all.
@hbdgaf that works
I also though of "plymmer"
There was a TedTalk where some guy was trying to think out a business name and slogan. He started with Bill Bobbins makes very good shoes or something.
Then it became Bill Bobbins makes great shoes <-- because you shouldn't use superlatives. It's not very something it's just something else.
Then it became Bill Bobbins makes shoes <-- because if you were making bad shoes you shouldn't be in the shoe business.
Then it became Bill makes shoes <-- because you should be on a first name basis with your clients.
too bad something named g2p already exists
9:24 PM
heh. that's a little glib. g2p wouldn't be expressive enough. something that short is programmer terse, not user terse.
I'ld also hate to be that guy that has people saying "I got it over PEETOOPEE" but not knowing it stands for peer to peer or what that means...
so are you thinking command line, or a full select file interface?
drop target interface.
so drag and drop the gif in - done.
pretty much. two separate runs though. run, drop target builds the thing. separate command invocation for installation since it needs sudo, and that needs really linear code. one of the complaints i got about lens-toggle was that it needed root to manipulate some things, and the complaint is valid-ish.
make-theme and install-latest-generated-theme. if it makes money to invest the time, then a theme manager, but there's already an app for that, so probably not necessary. just an export to the expected theme format type of thing.
useful link for plymouth theme-ing with animations: brej.org/blog/?p=158 it's a 3-parter, but it covers everything -- mostly.
9:44 PM
@hbdgaf makes sense, put the work into what isn't out there allready
@Mateo only build things that need building. if someone else did it, let them do it right or maintain it.
@hbdgaf lol - PEETOOPEEFOURFREEEEE!?
You could so have things like this for your boot screen:
It has a transparent channel, just have it over color of choice.
@Mateo it would be this as a lolgif youtube.com/watch?v=RnKFARGbUA4
ok, unboxed it to save on annoyance ;)
