@fossfreedom Thanks..
@Braiam java-gnome
@fossfreedom How about
@FrankSlezak yes you can ... but in this case, I presume you are talking about that wine question. Your answer really didnt have a new angle on the dupe question. if it did I would have merged. If you can come up with something that is fundamentally additional that is not already covered in the dupe, I would be happy to merge.
Wait.. which one of you Brits was the one that didn't like Tea? Was it Oli or FOSS?
love tea ... I'm just going to make one - thanks for reminding me !
19:03
If you all haven't already downvoted the accepted answer here can you downvote it?
I know Foss likes Tea a lot
@Seth that is IMPOSSIBLE
my +20 +500 answer on that question is actually complete and works
A brit not liking tea is like a dutch person not liking cheese.

speaking of tea or coffee or drinks... someone want to lend me $3 until the checks I deposited clear, so I can buy my daily coffee?
19:04
@Rinzwind Amen to that..
@ThomasW. O_O
@Braiam I have a -$10 balance in my bank accounts, with pending $100 check deposits into each of them, so I have $180 I can't yet use.
Nov 5 at 22:59, by Oli
@Seth Can't stand the stuff. I'll take coffee and energy drinks over a cup of tea any day.
(fees're waived because the money is in the works)
Sad I know..
19:06
C O F F E E ! ! !
Suit yourself.
T e a!!!
Any idea why my delay doesn't work here @ThomasW.?
@Rinzwind tea made ... aaah - perfect.
@fossfreedom Earl Grey I presume?
19:08
too posh
I was in London last week and had LOTS and LOTS of tea :D
@Seth that's Java or C++ isnt it
whereabouts in london?
@Seth:
ai java-gnome
Couldn't find package "java-gnome". However, the following

@Seth I'm not a coder pro, ask on SO?
19:10
/me waiting for stuff to get installed
@Braiam In Debian it's libjava-gnome-java
@ThomasW. Just thought you might now.. Since I thought you knew Java.
@Seth I know enough Java to get by in a pinch, but I prefer NOT coding in Java
since Java is an evil horrible piece of crap
@fossfreedom place to stay was Crawley (80m south). Spent lots of time in center London.
/me goes to get coffee (again, 4th cup today)
@ThomasW. would probably be closed of this one stackoverflow.com/q/8987485/792066
19:12
@Braiam Probably, but I meant go over to their chat and ask in a Java channel
@Braiam No it wouldn't. Two different questions.
@ThomasW. Didn't think of that.
declares he has superior thought processes over @Seth as a result.
lol
really thinks at least 10% of the questions of AU are asked by idiots
19:15
@Mitch #Likewhore
those edits are bad, and wrong, and need to be subjected to the infinite fires of oblivion
@FrankSlezak only 10%?
@Rinzwind good point. i'm only looking at newest. doing a bit more browsing, 35% at the very least.
@fossfreedom perhaps you can poke them about that?
@FrankSlezak ?
19:17
@ThomasW. wait, he's removing the <pre> tags for ugli <code> tags?
@Mitch: A likewhore is a user on a social networking site that begs for likes, often using the "like or comment" method.
@Braiam look at markdown instead.
@Braiam markdown's easier to see what he's doing.
and yes, he's removing pre formatting i.e. CODE BLOCKS for in-line ` code ` stuff
@ThomasW. the OP rarely makes edits looking at his suggestion queue - no need to get heavy handed.
@fossfreedom it's the lack of coffee
and the lack of money to GET coffee
me - coffee = evil
@ThomasW. Imma looking at markdown by default, but "removing the space indentation to add backticks" sounds so bad...
19:19
me finished tea ... in a good mood.
foss. tea does NOTHING. try coffee.
@fossfreedom chocolate chip cookie? :)
Programmer (n): A machine that turns coffee into code.
> fixed some format
D:
Java (n): What happens when you give a programmer very strong coffee.
19:20
@Rinzwind xmas pudding next
@FrankSlezak I know what it means, but I don't think that's the case here ..
just me or chat became lively... all the rooms I'm
@mitch of course everyone will say no battery is worse. if you run outta fuel, you can call someone to bring you some.
just noticed. this is the only page i use my real name on...
Not if your cell phone battery is dead :)
... you win this round, evil twin. recedes into shadow
19:23
@FrankSlezak you can charge your phone if you have fuel :+
and if you dont have a charger?
Crank charger FTW!
Time for some darts :) bbl
i hate you all so much.
:)
19:26
...
;)
yay. username fixed.
@Seth: java -jar seth.jar
Error: Invalid or corrupt jarfile seth.jar
is a jar, right?
lel
seth.jar is a new virus, Braiam.
@Braiam Yeah..
19:27
It scrambles the last half of all text files on your hdd.

Q: is there a way to change the size of hats?

Mina MichaelI got a hat that has ears but it's too big for my head ...so is it possible to make it smaller? I think this feature is crucial if it doesn't exist.

@Seth mine bork
twitch
java -jar Downloads/notifyTest.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/gnome/gtk/Gtk
	at notifyTest.main(notifyTest.java:7)
Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.gnome.gtk.Gtk

	at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:423)
That means you don't have gtk, or its not working
19:32
Yeah, you need to specify the class location.
Hang on a sec.
/me have no freaking idea of what he's doing
Don't worry. All you need to know is how to read java errors.
Try installing the dev version of gnome, gtk, libnotify
@pacificfils hahahahaha (monotone)
java -classpath Downloads/lib/gtk-4.1.jar -jar Downloads/notifyTest.jar
Try that.
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/gnome/gtk/Gtk
19:34
@Seth what is /lib/gtk-4.1.jar? I don't have that :D
@Braiam Oh.. You need to download all the files in the Java folder I linked ;)
Exception = error
in = in
thread = app
"main" = program
"java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError" = libraries don't exist
"org/gnome" = gnome
"gtk/GTK" = gtk
not hard braiam
will you please post that in au so i can get some rep?
doesn't gtk has java libs?
not unless you install them. its in the *-dev package
> Standard Widget Toolkit for GTK+ Java library
> libswt-gtk-3-java
19:38
Just 3 files and 1 folder
try -dev packages
@Seth not found
Errg. Hang on.
-dev is your friend
There aren't any -dev packages.
19:39
okay.
it is a gtk class not found. did you include the class?
I did, but @Braiam forgot to download it.
lol
so libnotify-dev is NOT needed?
Shouldn't be needed.
I thought you were talking about libjava-gnome-java-dev though.
Let me see if I have it installed.
19:41
oh, i heard a rumor that mir is finally fixed on the Grouper.
Nope. I don't.
is the rumor true?
I think so.. Which one was the grouper?
@Braiam Any better?
nexus 7 2012 edition
Ah. Then I think so.
19:42
FINALLY.
2 days ago, by Mateo
Wow, I think they fixed the Mir glitch on the nexus 7 for Ubuntu touch
thank god.
that was soo annoying
@Seth only 5 secs
well, back to testing.
GLaDOS mode activated
@Braiam What does that mean?
19:45
that mine only spend 5 secs
Ah.
Must be a system thing then.. I still have no idea why it isn't working..
does this place have freenode?
Nope.
Why use IRC when we have this?
19:46
ubuntu integration
how the heck I edit the files?
@Braiam Guess I'll just leave that bit out of my answer.
@Braiam You only edit notifyTest.jar. Extract it with archive manager, edit the .class file.
You'll have to rebuild it if you want to run it after that though.
/me remembers why he hates java
java is great
Heh. You can't edit an object file.
but then, that's a good thing sometimes.
assumes Braiam hates Java because he loves C
Anyway, I'm out for now and I'll just leave that part out of the answer until further notice.
19:57
@pacificfils tried it out a few days ago. Seemed OK, but I think it will still crash on a screen shot

Q: How to switch from Mir to Surfaceflinger?

Caleb JonesBecause of this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/mir/+bug/1238695 Ubuntu Touch on the Google Nexus 7 (grouper), Touch randomly freezes, and flickers. It is bad enough that I cannot do anything except restart the device. I was just wondering how to workaround this, can I switch back to the "surfa...

@Seth what the heck is this?
So, "Triaged" some things are still wierd but I think the major stutter freeze seems fixed
20:23
@Braiam What are you trying to do?
Is that the .class file?
@Braiam Okay, so it's not as easy to decompile a .jar as I thought.
If you want to change it you'll have to edit it manually, creating the whole thing from scratch. (not hard..)

Q: (java websocket) server location standards

GracchusI'm writing a server on a shared development desktop that moonlights as a server. This is my first attempt at writing a linux server for someone else on a shared box. I'd like to conform to unix standards and make it as professional as possible. In what directory should the websocket server be...

@Seth /me continues to remember why he hates java so much...
20:55
why this seem like he's using flackoverstow askubuntu.com/a/396505/169736?
can anyone make sense of what is answer and what is troubleshooting here askubuntu.com/q/366032/169736? apparently the solution works
(cc @Takkat )
Good grief. No worse than C/++
mm?
21:13
@Braiam the pulseaudio bluetooth module should always load... at least it does on my systems. No idea why it doesn't appear to load there - seems to be an Xubuntu peculiarity. The answer is sort of a quarter solution only.
21:58
@Mateo awesomewauce ;)
@jrg ^^ the mugs. i managed to get eight of them.
It's normal. The how/why could be one of many things, but "that's normal" is right.
@ThomasW. The "because it's used up by system" isn't quite right...
@hbdgaf propose a revision, or edit my answer
i have to deal with security bugs in nginx today
heh. have fun with that. i'll think on how specific you really want to get to some guy on AU.
22:13
@hbdgaf the "it's normal" part is fine, but you can strike whatever ( I already have +3 there)
@hbdgaf revised though
@ThomasW. it's really about how ocd you want to be about details, how deep you want to explain, etc. it can come down to how the mobo provisions memory, how the OS indexes really large amounts of memory just in case, shared video. i'ld probs just leave it as is to avoid the more details please and ... no it's not that ... in the comments.
22:30
@hbdgaf with the newly-revised version, is that acceptable for newbies?
they'll probably ask "Why is it not usable?" then we're in for the technical description hell, but meh
jrg
jrg
@hbdgaf how much?
lines crossed sorry
jrg
jrg
hah
ok
@Mateo - $50 was the donation.
@jrg - I haven't checked to see fits/ships boxes and packing material.
jrg
jrg
@hbdgaf ok
22:32
@hbdgaf :)
@jrg burn the answer on this and force close as dupe please
@jrg should be pretty simple to do, i just got them today, so checking the boxes should happen within the week. since it's eight instead of twenty it should probably fit in one of their 14-17 boxes. if that's the case i'll probably just ping you to confirm and send it postage due on receipt if you want.
@ThomasW. i like it better. it avoids the ignorance or troll-battle that could ensue. there was one on linkedin tech support discussion group that went on for DAYS about that type of problem.
i think i finally just meme-bombed it with:
22:53
off for some l4d2 RnR. later on peeps.
@hbdgaf later
hmm .. Why do they migrate a question to AU that is not really on topic here?
1
Q: Ghostscript Segmentation fault (core dumped) where it's dumped?

HardyI'm trying to convert PDF to JPG with command: gs -dUseTrimBox -dNOPAUSE -dSAFER -dBATCH -sDEVICE=jpeg -dGraphicsAlphaBits=4 -dTextAlphaBits=4 -dFirstPage=1 -dLastPage=1 -dNumRenderingThreads=2 -sOutputFile=/fileout.jpg -dJPEGQ=80 -r188 -f filein.pdf In ubuntu 12.04 server and ghostscript ve...

He says (builded from source")
so I guess we are facing a bug?
@hbdgaf Are you running Lubuntu? :P Now we know what you look like ;)

A: How to raise user notifications in Ubuntu using java code?

SethYou can use java-gnome, a java binding for GTK and Gnome to display notify-osd notifications. You'll need to install the library first: sudo apt-get install libjava-gnome-java libjava-gnome-java-doc Here is a quick example: import org.gnome.gtk.Gtk; import org.gnome.notify.Notification; ...

@Braiam There, done --^
@Alvar That's Xubuntu :P
23:08
@Seth read it again and retracted my close vote. it's a valid question
@Seth damn, not sure what it was they are both kinda ugly lubuntu/xubuntu
@Alvar Cool :) Retracting close votes is a nice feature..
gnome flashback fan here.
@Alvar That's true I suppose.
@Alvar I know you are ;P
@Seth especially since a question tend to change after time.
@Seth haha
I wonder why my code isn't getting highlighted. Must not be any highlighting in the Java tag :(
23:10
Any idea on how I can remove ubuntu-gnome-desktop? Not sure that it's needed anymore when running flashback.. It switched out the boot screen and that stuff I want the ubuntu images back
@Seth try to copy it from paste.ubuntu.com that might work..
No, it only copies as plain text. SE uses something to add the highlighting.. I forget what it's called..
@Alvar ubuntu-gnome-desktop is just a meta package, I wouldn't remove it.
You could, but it might mess up other things.
not sure if it would mess up my flashback install..
might work if I just reinstalled the ubuntu-desktop
I want my purple boot screen back, it's grey now :S
3
A: How do I make the login screens and boot splashes match when installing different desktops?

SethYou can remove the Lubuntu splash screen in several ways. If you want to change splash screens every once in a while you can run: sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth You will be presented with a screen like the following: In this case, entering a 0 or a 1 will set the spla...

@Seth o yeah! :D
rebooting to try it out
damn didn't work, still says ubuntu gnome....
removing the logo, that must work...
23:30
What steps did you take?
just the first command
removed the logo now, gonna try again
also wasnt asked to remove the meta package :P
@Alvar That doesn't make sense.. It should work fine. Always did for me.
yay, got purple boot screen, but I got still ubuntu gnome splash before the log in screen
which makes no sence...
also get a strange error on boot, notify rfkill handler
sudo apt-get remove plymouth-theme-ubuntu-gnome-text
aha
that was also listed...
thanks seth.
I'm gonna go now, it's late. gonna write code all day tomorrow, shouldn't be sleepy then.. :)
