Q: Ubuntu repo mirror from a specific time

EricI am helping a group that uses a time-locked Ubuntu 12.04.5 distribution underneath their internally developed software (specific support libraries, extensive QA work, etc). I have been tasked with assembling a locked local repository based on the files that they are already using. Obviously the...

Q: Mono Nuget Assembly Error in Linux

Samuel QuansahMy questions is about the microsoft mono package and using it with NuGet. Long story short, I'm hoping I can have a working .NET Engine for a couple of games I wanted to install that requires this. @TheWanderer I've got noscript installed. YouTube is not trusted by default.
:P :P :P
and stackoverfiow isn't neither. Hah!

@Fabby the new noscript for ff quantum is bad
Use uMatrix
Also, good morning :)

@ByteCommander it's different.
Good morning to you too.

you lot are late :=)

Just back from dentist.

why late? Hi Rinzy

7:44 AM
I have been working for 2 hours already
/s/working/lurking,g
or something similar :=)

same here ... working for years now... still no end in sight
Hi all

Heyo
Lurking for an hour already as well

Yeah - why talk if lurk is possible too :D :D :D

Sprechen ist silbern, schweigen ist golden

takky!

7:53 AM
Spreken is zilver, zwijgen is goud.
Better now? >:-)

zilver :=)

Kut! Ik kan zelfs geen Nederlands meer schrijven!
Hi Terdon! What would the expressione be in Greek?

La parole est d’argent, le silence est d’or
:-)
@Fabby Omilía eínai asími, i siopí eínai chrysós
>:)

Actually, you're right, it's "le silence". Just haven't hear that word spoken by the French for > 10 years... 0:-)

:D

7:58 AM
el siléncio

@Fabby I know it as: Sprechen ist Silber, Schweigen ist Gold.

Usually "Reden ist Silber", I'd say

It's the Swiss German version.

oh right

@ByteCommander so in German German it woud be:
Reden ist Silber, Schweigen ist Gold ?

7:59 AM
yup

@Fabby *Schweigen
exactly :)

Swiss German is easy to understand, just hard to speak.

silentium est aureum

Talar är silver tystnad är guld :=)
Japanese are funny. In Japan it is "Say nothing is a flower" :X

8:08 AM
I hate Amy
Been trying to get pass her for 2 weeks now :=)

@Rinzwind yeah, those geese are truly nasty

Amy is more a spider :=)

@Rinzwind a flower can say much without making any sound. The Japanese expression is less silly than the one about a lump of metal

8:58 AM
Hey, since yesterday my 17.10 Machine just gets stuck during boot.
Any has the same problem?

no... what package upgrades arrived? can you boot an older kernel or in recovery?

Recovery works but older kernels don't seem to help
It just stops booting and is 100% unresponsive to anything

what about fixing packages in recovery? I don't know the menu very well because... my keyboard doesn't work in recovery XD

Tried that
I have isntalled new updates and fscked
The last message I get is
`[ OK ] Started User Manager for UID 130`

(if you put any newlines in a chat message, it kills all the formatting , unless you indent the whole thing)
I guess whatever happens after starting user manager is broken...
there was an upgrade to libpam-modules but shrug idk
I guess you should write a question on the site with all this info?
might be a bug...

wow... how can you tell... so little information

Looks like a problem with gdm3
You should be able to get a shell login on a TTY
(press Ctrl+Alt+F1, enter username and password when asked)
I had that in a few VMs too, but I can't remember if and how I solved it
IIRC I just nuked the VM...
possibly a graphics driver problem

I can't use the tty
It is completeley frozen
I had thought of that
@Zanna It's very little information but the timeframe and problem fits

we probably need some more info to begin answering that question, either from OP or elsewhere...

(Pressed enter before finishing the text )
What can I add to help?

9:21 AM
@Fabby both is hard, apparently even for Swiss people: youtube.com/watch?v=QOwITNazUKg ;)

No isn't related

@ByteCommander On 18.04 tty'S are only created by demand, can't tell you where you went wrong, maybe its related with gdm running under wayland

that Started User Manager comes quite late in the boot process I think? After that in my syslog I have
/var/log/syslog.1-Apr 18 07:45:56 toaster systemd[1]: Stopped User Manager for UID 112.

@Videonauth 17.10

you can try setting gdm3 to x11 mode

I don't have the problem any more

change #WaylandEnable=false to WaylandEnable=false to activate x11 mode on gdm3
can somehow as well set a special amount of tty's being pre started
per default they set it to zero
so if you request a tty it is created this very moment
F1 is the login window whatever you do, F2 is your desktop if you're logged in, F3 to F7 are tty's.

@Videonauth is this 17.10 or 18.04 you're talking about?

@dessert both
I even wrote an answer a couple of moths ago
and @ponsky covered a lot of topics around gnome3 too
99,99% apply to 18.04 too
only thing I did was, I installed vanilla gnome instead of canonical's off spin

A: How to turn off Ubuntu 17.10's GUI (GDM)?

VideonauthTo stop it: sudo systemctl gdm stop To disable it completely: sudo systemctl gdm disable To start it: sudo systemctl gdm start and to re-enable it: sudo systemctl gdm enable To see the actually running services systemctl --state running

A: How do I switch between console mode and GUI in 17.10?

VideonauthThe actual used tty consoles have changed around with the introduction of Wayland and 17.10. Now tty1 always contains the login screen, and tty2 contains your actual loaded session. So use Ctrl+Alt+F3 up to Ctrl+Alt+F7 for getting to an actual unused tty and use Ctrl+Alt+F2 to go back to GUI. F...

(shameless self promotion, I know just wanted to point out that we have already lots of answers which apply for 18.04, we have a high wave of duplicates incomming when 18.04 is out officially)

9:56 AM
no shame in that, but the second answer you linked above seem to link this change to wayland, which 18.04 doesn't use by default…

Oh, new kernel just flowing in
er it uses wayland for gdm3
the file i posted up there is unchanged
and waylandEnable=False is commented out
I'm on 18.04 and not changed that yet
had no need to

that's confusing oO

on 17.10 i did run on x11 mode and do not see any differences in behavior
your desktop is x11 by default but not your login manager

ah, ok – I didn't think this would make any sense, obviously it does ;)

this is why you have your login manager at tty 1
always
you can log in different sessions if you whish to do so
they would slowly fill up the tty's
but to be honest as log it is only the login managr running wayland im fine with it, the login manager does not need to run screencapture capabilities
but the desktop does, for example running OBS etc

10:03 AM
@Videonauth exactly what I thought, I agree it's a good thing

to be honest unless a month ago where i had to reinstall i had 17.10 and it was stable as heck
18.04 had some issues for me sadly
at first steam was not working out of the box
but that is solved now
the latest updates made 18.04 far more stable

10:21 AM
Interestingly I got to the login screen now bot now it's completely frozen again ....

buggy driver I would say :/

Hmmm
And I booted in Xorg now
Any Ideas what I coudl try?
Or more what else

if you boot with initctl_debug and no_console_suspend parameters, you might get a hint as to what is happening when the system hangs

Do they get their own line or are these kernel options?

kernel options
they go where quiet splash was
I guess you already removed those...

@TheWanderer You awake?
@Zanna You awake?

yes...

Whew!
Having some difficulties with DNS in Ubuntu (running on Windows now)
can you do a :
nmcli device show wlp2s0
(or whatever the network connection is you're currently using)
and post the output here, please? @Zanna

which parts of that information are sensitive? XD

GENERAL.HWADDR:
Actually, I only need:
IP4.ROUTE[1]: dst = 169.254.0.0/16, nh = 0.0.0.0, mt = 1000
(as that's the one that looks suspicious in my set-up)

IP4.ROUTE[1]: dst = 169.254.0.0/16, nh = 0.0.0.0, mt = 1000

5:17 PM
Urgh, so that's not it then...
back to square 1
Thanks!

sorry :/

Never be sorry about anything that you didn't cause personally!

(So unless you remoted into my machine and screwed up something to spite me, *don't apologize! :D)
@terdon do you know a bit about networking and have 5 minutes?

@Fabby Not really. I mean, try me, but networking is certainly not an area I am knowledgeable about. Probably a good deal less so than you are.

I'm not getting name resolution on Ubuntu (running on Windows now)

local or remote?

5:23 PM
executing nmcli device show wlp2s0 gives
and I get:
nslookup

Default server: 1.1.1.1
Address: 1.1.1.1#53

@terdon (which answers your question)

It does indeed. OK, that's weird.

so although I've set the DNS servers manually, not working...

It does eventually, right? I mean, your 1st attempt shows it failing, but the same nslookup later works.

(removed as it contains sensitive stuff)
that's because in nslookup I have to set the server manually too!

Ah, only when using 1.1.1.1. and not with 8
I see

5:26 PM
it doesn't take it from the config!

Yeah, sorry, I'm not the right person to ask about this sort of thing.

Just weird... OK, question time

well, I just wanted to point out that this one is NAA as well.

@Fabby you typed “still” twice in the question

7:15 PM
so I feel a bit miffed that a downvote from the other user on my better NAA answer than his has been deleted.
(probably after a downvote from said user, as there is no good answer)
But: I will bow to the wisdom of the mod! @JourneymanGeek

@Fabby but I can still still ping 1.1.1.1

@ThomasWard I'd prefer herbs as I don't use salt!

well at least it was just salt and not diamond powered firebombs

@Fabby it's just too short for an edit suggestion ;P

@dessert Corrected.

@ThomasWard You want to go into an explosives smiting battle with a Chemist???

@Fabby ah, so you're the one who put the thermite on the "Orbital Weapons Control Panel" and rigged it to go off when I got close.

eh, thermite is one of the easiest things...
we made that at school

@ByteCommander [Esc][:][q][!] always works.
@ThomasWard :D :D :D
(also: what ByteCommander said: thermite is easy)

i know it's easy :P

7:32 PM
Nitrocellulose is easy too, but the ingrediantes are a bit harder to get.
TNT is average, Nitroglycerine is a bit more difficult.

(unrelated, did you know the Hindenburg disaster was a result of the thermite-like mix in its coating/paint combined with the hydrogen used to keep it afloat all being set off by some type of spark or heat or fire)

Hmm, wasn't that what table tennis balls and old film rolls were made of?

I'm typing and it dissapears

(the nitrocellulose)

@ThomasWard yup.
@ByteCommander yup

7:39 PM
I remember how we set some table tennis balls aflame in Chemistry class as demonstration.
Was far less spectacular than we hoped, though :P

@Fabby nice!

It was an answer on Ask Ubuntu that helped me:
I needed to do a sudo dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf and that was it!

@dessert Can you star my SU question here above? Everyone should know about it here!

Thanks!

you mean dessert!

@dessert :D

@cl-netbox: guess what? I lost my NVRAM today because I did a BIOS update. Boot-repair could not repair it, but booting in rEFInd from USB and dropping into an EFI shell allowed me to quickly do a bcfg boot add 3 fs1:\EFI\EFI/refind/refind_x64.efi "rEFInd Boot Manager" and a bcfg boot mv 4 0

sounds like sorcery

Windows Boot Manager and grub are both still completely separate!
@ByteCommander UEFI is a bitch if you've used BIOS for 30 years.

even if just 10 years
