6:00 PM
Used on SE to mean secondary account(s) of the same user.
@Pilot6 OK, that's a valid point. I'll see what I can do.

@terdon I checked it ... @Pilot6 got 5 DVs today ... that's not normal !

@terdon And I suspect the first upvote on the discussed answer was by the same person.

@Pilot6 I'm afraid mods have no way of knowing who voted for what.

And really I never got so many downvotes in one hour, even on one day. Specifically on highly rated posts. It is a minor issue, but there must be a way to track it somehow.

@Pilot6 The same happened to me some time ago ... :(

6:05 PM
It is not a problem for me. But this kind of a behavior is harmful.

@Pilot6 what makes you say it is irrelevant anyway? Seems relevant to me. One problem does not necessarily have the same causes every time.

@Seth Pardon?
I asked a question regarding a specific error message
It is impossible to get it on a non-UEFI

@Pilot6 apparently not..

And the poster did not get this error. He just could not run a customly built module
The post is mostly a rant that Ubuntu is crap
I bet the problem in the "bug" is a wrong kernel .config

@Pilot6 He got an error that is very, very similar and could well indicate the same problem under slightly different conditions or different kernel versions or something.

6:11 PM
Well, it looks similar, but it is irrelevant. OK, you probably do not know the issue

@Pilot6 that is outright untrue.
Nothing the least bit ranty about it.

And I seriously do not understand how "I have a similar looking error when I run my module that I reported as a but" can help anyone.
And how is it an answer?
If I report something as a bug, will an answer saying "I am having the same problem...look...a bug" will be an answer?

@Pilot6 can I see the answer/question you guys are discussing here ?

@Pilot6 "your problem us caused by bug #xxxxxxx" isn't an answer to your problem? No immediate solution, but that's because your issue is caused by a bug.
0
A: Why do I get "Required key not available" when install 3rd party kernel modules or after a kernel upgrade?

musbachAll the above answers work only for EFI/UEFI motherboards (kernel version above 4.4.x) There is a bug in Ubuntu for "normal" BIOS motherboards: BIOS motherboards cannot start unsigned modules. One gets with dmesg | tail an error like module verification failed: signature and/or required key missi...

See the previous post

6:15 PM
Just like saying "you can't" is a valid answer so is saying "it's a bug, no fix" or "it's a bug. here's workaround"

If it is an existing bug, that really is a bug, I agree. But if it is a self-reported bug, that is not actually a bug...

@Pilot6 the heck? It's even been triaged.

There is nothing in that bug report. No fix, no workaround, no no-fix. Just a wrong report.

@Serg It's called talking to yourself.
:)

@Serg It is not triaged. It is confirmed, because someone clicked " I am affected". Probably the same person. Same as voting.

6:17 PM
Ah yes... back to two accounts one IP theory.

And it is misleading.

Tim

@Pilot6 Um, no. 4 people affected and a well known bug worker triaged it.

@Seth Where do you see it triaged?

@Pilot6 wrong ping there, make sure you actually type out seth's name

6:21 PM
@Pilot6 last comment, Alberto set the importance.

@Seth No! aliases don't work with arguments. The $1 will be taken from the environment at alias definition time and all arguments to the alias when called will be simply appended.

@Seth It is not triaged. It is unassigned and confirmed.

The $1 must be removed.

@ByteCommander well that ruined the joke..

(normally the $1 should be empty unless you started your shell in a fancy way, but it's a potential danger)

6:22 PM
@Pilot6 triagers don't assign people, that's for the project to do. Triagers do their best to make sure there is enough information in the bug to fix it, it's categorized properly, and they set importance. All of which has been done.

@Seth Importance is set by definition. I am involved in bug fixing there a lot )))
I fix many kernel bugs

@Seth Sorry for nitpicking ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Pilot6 then you should know better than to outright dismiss a bug like this simply because you got a downvote on your Ask Ubuntu answer.

OK. Let's think the answer is useful. I bet the bug will be closed as Invalid in a while. )))

@Pilot6 we don't take moderation tasks based on predictions of the future.
so that's fine.

6:26 PM
@Pilot6 @Seth @terdon @cl-netbox OK, I looked at the question, and the answer. As early as April 25, the question was tagged with UEFI. The answer in question appears to be talking only about BIOS. Correct me if I'm wrong, but posting answers about A when question is really about B is kind of redundant, no ?

The moderators are not supposed to understand the difference ;-) @Serg

that's mostly true ^

@Serg Does that mean you don't post an awk answer if the post is tagged with sed?

It is a "known bug". It may be relevant. Period.

that's why editing exists.

6:28 PM
Had the question been explicitly about EFI that would have indeed been different. But just having the tag is less clear.

@terdon awk and sed can do the same.
@terdon There is explicit error message that can't appear without UEFI + the tag

@Pilot6 @Serg @Seth @terdon I think the whole downvoting thing in this topic seems to be something personal.

@cl-netbox This is a separate issue ;-)

@terdon I do, and it's perfectly fine if there's no restriction. If OP specifically says, "I'm not interested in other approaches, I only want this specific tool" , then I won't post. Additionally, if there is no restriction, the question is really related to text processing, which is a broad topic and for that suggesting to use something more appropriate is fine. In case of BIOS / EFI it might not be as easy - user is stuck with what they have

Obviously the poster wanted to draw attention to his "bug". Nothing else. And got pissed when I said that it was irrelevant

6:32 PM
@Serg Yes, but my point was that if you want to restrict answers to something specific, that should be in the question body, not in a tag. Tags are very easy to miss and shouldn't carry information that is essential to the question. They're just a way for the site to organize questions.

@Serg Anyway my question is not related to any bug. It is a specific issue. And 26k viwers prove that

If your question looses information because it was retagged, then you should edit it in.

@cl-netbox that's rather obvious, yes.

@Pilot6 Agreed with @terdon , consider editing your post - specify whether or not you want it specifically for EFI or whether it's open to BIOS as well

@Serg It does not exist on BIOS. This error appears only on UEFI.
There is no BIOS solution

6:34 PM
@Pilot6 OK, specify that in question body. I don't need to know that. Readers do.

OK

@Pilot6 What about adding this information to the question to make it more clear ?

Or just leave it as it is and walk away? Why is that not an option?
Just downvote the answer you find not helpful and get on with the rest of your day.

@terdon to prevent conflicts like that in future ?

Fair enough.

6:36 PM
OK . . . so no other suggestions as to what to call it when developer sends him/her self a feature request ?

@Pilot6 Well done ! :) 2 UVs from me for that (one for the Q and one for A) ! :)

@Serg What's the context? Where do you want to use the term?
@cl-netbox Wait, what? Don't tell me you also have a sock?

@terdon What ??? I only have this one cl-netbox account !

@terdon sumitting issues to myself on github, basically like this: github.com/SergKolo/indicator-bulletin/issues

@cl-netbox Phew! I was just wondering since you said "two" votes.
@Serg Yes, but in what context are you going to use the name you are looking for?
(and what's wrong with 'feature requests' anyway?)

6:38 PM
@terdon one for the Q and one for A ! :)

Ah!

@terdon I got your point about NAA. It is fair enough for someone not deeply involved.

@terdon In stack overflow they will post the sed answer as requested by OP but then add "but hey you can also do it this way using awk which is better".

You are not supposed to get all that differences

@terdon title for the issue/ticket/that-thing-i-don't-know-how-to-name :)
Feature Request is usually understood as coming from users

6:40 PM
@Serg Call it a reminder, if you want.

If it's coming from a dev him/her self it sounds weird

@Serg To whom?

@terdon @Pilot6 followed my suggestion and added the relevant information to his question. Also I wanted to compensate the DVs he got to make him happy again ! :)

It's still a request

@Serg Normally the developer puts that down as a "to-do".

6:41 PM
A TASK !!!
there , that's the word I was looking for !!!
Tasks are assigned
I can assign that to myself

@cl-netbox Thx.

@Pilot6 You're welcome ! :)

It is not a rep issue. Next time I will downvote silently ))) to avoid "conflicts"

Not a good idea ...

Geezums . . . See, I'm not the most expressive person. It takes forever for me to find the right words. Wait till I'm going to be proposing to my gf . . .I'll probably annoy everyone in the room, and English SE ,too, just to find all the right expressions

6:43 PM
"Please please marry me" might work :D

@cl-netbox And some other good answer got a downvote too ))) there

@Serg I thought she's Chinese.

at the same time. But only one because that guy did not comment ;-)

@terdon She is . . . But whether it is in Chinese or in English, I'll need to find a way to express my feelings and such. And I suck at that. In any language

huehuehue

6:45 PM
@Serg OK, but I wouldn't recommend asking for help on English.SE if you're gonna do it in Chinese ;)

@Serg I bet you will get duplicate downvotes too soon ;-)

@Pilot6 Yes ... the same happened to me before ... that's why I prefer the "conflict" comments ... then you can react and improve (in case it is necessary) and maybe receive an un-DV ... but personal DVs are another thing (this also happened to me).

Just write a little script for her @Serg.
while read response; do
   if [[ $response = "yes" ]]; then
      echo "YAY!";
   else
      echo "NOoooooooooooooo";
   fi;
done

Better yet @Serg an indicator that pops down a message with Yes/No options :)

6:47 PM
@cl-netbox This happens to everyone from time to time. But the "doubles" is the first time.

@terdon you forgot while IFS= read -r response

@Serg That's the easy bit ;)

@Pilot6 Well, we shall see then.

@Pilot6 This is not very nice, so I can understand you very well, DVs for good answer are annoying and sometimes a pain ... it leads to frustration.

@Serg terdon will say: "we do not know who is doing that" )))
It is very easy to track by rep
and time

6:50 PM
@Pilot6 effectively, yes, we might not know who is that, since we cannot see the history. Neither RSS nor timeline of a post shows that. It certainly can be triangulated, but it's still can be considered a guess
I remember seeing a post where a guy built a roses models with leds inside them for valentines day for his gf
I should build some kind of project like that, but with Raspberry and Python
And maybe this little new language I'm learning >:) huehuehue (shhhh, itz a zekret )

We know the time of a downvote. And we know the time of -1 in rep ;-)

@Pilot6 what about revoking the downvotes @Pilot6 got by using some "magic mod power" being inspired by our most dark evil mod @ThomasWard ? Can you do the same @terdon ? :D

@Pilot6 coincidences happen, so unless it explicitly says which post it was, we cannot know for sure. But I do wonder if moderators can investigate it under reasonable amount of suspicion

@cl-netbox It is not worth an effort.

@cl-netbox No I can't and I wouldn't even if I could. People are free to vote as they like as long as they don't break the rules (like using a second account to vote again).
But mods can't invalidate individual votes and we can't know who voted on what.

6:53 PM
@terdon Can you seriously imagine that at the same time some TWO REAL PEOPLE could downvote the question AND the answer?
I do not mean some really poor post
Like spam or link-only

@cl-netbox vox populi est

@Serg aha ... Latin ... I hated it way back in school times ... hahaha

XD
Also, in other news: I am 43k today \ o/

Congrats @Serg you work hard and deserve every point.

I thought you were much younger

6:57 PM
haha funny :p

@JacobVlijm I see you don't have AU main account but are 100 points away from 50K :)

@Pilot6 I can imagine it yes, but I need to stretch my imagination a bit. No, you're quite right that sort of thing usually indicates a problem and, as I said before, we are looking into it.
I just mean mods can't see who voted on what any more than regular users can.

@Serg CONGRATS ! :) also in other news : stagnation on cl-netbox side ! :D :D :D

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I am 83 :)

7:01 PM
@JacobVlijm plot twist : serg is a vampire from Transylvania
@cl-netbox that can be corrected

At end of story we learn @JacobVlijm and @Serg are really same person with two accounts pretending to have healthy competition writing Python scripts.
7

@terdon I see that some user has been removed and some downvotes disappeared

O.o

@Serg We'll see ... have to go now ... goodbye my friend ! :)

bye

7:04 PM
@Serg don't byte me

have a great day @cl-netbox and thanks for shooting foot advise!

@Serg Vlijm is a sharp knife for surgery in the medieval ages. We are related!

@WinEunuuchs2Unix hahaha ... thanks to you for providing humor here ! :)

@cl-netbox I'm glad my abundant of ignorance provides entertainment fodder :p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix :D

7:05 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix my socks

Goodbye everyone ... see you tomorrow :)

@cl-netbox btw I added credit to you on that question along terdon, pilot6, byte commander and zanna.

@cl-netbox see you!

@ByteCommander <<< plays the werewolf.

7:06 PM
@JacobVlijm have a nice evening Jacob ! :)

You too!

@JacobVlijm Thank you :)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix checked it ... thank you ... 2 UVs for that (1 for Q / 1 for A) ! :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yup, and @Seth is iguana who's really a dragon in disguise, while @ThomasWard is the Gandalf the Dark-One

@cl-netbox You're too kind! Thanks :)

@Serg seems not ... as of now nothing changed ... hahaha :D

7:10 PM
@Serg Can @Zanna play a role too? Perhaps as professor with pointy hat and magic wand?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix You're welcome ! :)
Now I go ... bye again ... :)

^^^ @cl-netbox should get up-votes for longest chat room good-bye in history :p

@ByteCommander Great, and I'll probably have to play the referee. And we all know who gets eaten first. . .

pointy hat eh? My hair is already pointy. I should be a unicorn...

I could play gollum (right name?) searching for lost golden ring "precious" that reveals all of bash's secrets including sed...haha
I like that Zanna the unicorn taking terdon to safety when players are angry at referee.

7:14 PM
@Zanna Nah, you're too corny for that, you'd have to be a multicorn. ba dum tss

hahahahaha

Sorry, can't leave a bad pun alone. And no, you're not corny.

7:15 PM
@terdon it's fine wipes the screen since I spat my tea at it laughing too much

Which reminds me, @Zanna what type of dip should I buy today for those Sweet Potato Chips I'm going to bake in the oven tonight?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix @Zanna can play an elf with super-speed capabilities, which is appropriate considering her editing abilities :p

@Zanna :)

@Serg Can we set the show in the new country @Seth and @NathanOsman and I created last night called "Cascadia" (Alaska+Yukon+BC+Alberta+Washington+Oregon)? We'll through Colorado into the new country to appease you.

Sure, we can do that. Or we can set everything on Mars. Totally neutral territory

7:22 PM
Mars works if we can have a portal to earth to grab new victims.

@Serg haha excellent

OK someone copy and paste this chatroom to holllywood and ask for commissions :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix mmm I like them with hummus or tahini sauce

@Zanna Thanks I'll look for them :)

7:27 PM
:p
How's your Dark Majesty doing today ?

Hey removed and @ThomasWard

gonna shop till I drop. Have a great day/night my multi-time zone friends :)

later :)

Yeah, i should probably leave chat ,too. I've exam in electromagnetic fields on monday night
Freakin' calculus, how I hate thee !!!

Hey @WinEunuuchs2Unix see you!
@Serg sitting for too long in electromagnetic fields isn' t healthy. Ask permission to do it elsewhere.

7:33 PM
Weed fields would be fun . . .too bad there's none nearby

7:50 PM
say, has anyone seen a tagged ubuntu post from U&L in a while?
huh, the feed got removed. When did that happen?

I killed the feed.

why? was there a discussion?

They kept using it as an argument for a bot in the room.

That's silly. It does something useful.
I've answered some and I know others who have too.

Hmm ok. You can put it back.

7:54 PM
Seth has made a change to the feeds posted into this room

I'm totally open to hearing reasons why people don't like it, but until then I don't see any reason to remove it :)
hm, we lost the bot that posted them before.
5 messages deleted

@jokerdino I missed that feed hahaha. But when I realised it was gone I started watching U&L instead of waiting for those posts

8:09 PM
My graphics went nuts again...
Now I have strange colorful distortions where should be window shadows.

When life drives you nuts, make nutella! Or peanut butter, or something.

Does not look really nutty... more like yogurt with rainbow sprinkles
guess I need a reboot, it's like that since waking from suspend.
@Seth Besides, I have to nitpick again that peanuts are not real nuts but legumes.

oh yum peanut butter <3

Besides, did you know that peanut butter is allowed to contain up to 30 insect fragments per 100g?
And if not, would you still eat it?
It may also contain one rodent hair per 100g.

I'm not going to stop eating it just because of that. What do you expect? Absolute perfection?

8:20 PM
Sure.

I did not know that, but I did know that some mould that grows on badly-stored peanuts produces carcinogenic toxins. And yeah, I'm still eating it because damn it's good

Of course not, but if you get made aware of it, it still feels... yucky.

so why are you telling us?
XD

I never ate peanut butter anyway because I don't like peanuts in general, but hey
Rebooting and hoping that my graphics work still/again after that

@ByteCommander shrug. It's not like peanut butter is the only thing.
@Zanna I'm assuming you don't eat the yucky store stuff with hydrogenated oils and sugars?

8:24 PM
when I was a kid I couldn't stand to be in the same room as someone eating peanut butter, I thought the smell was so horrible. My parents offered me all the different nuts to try and I was disgusted by them all. But now I love all kinds and eat them every day
@Seth I only buy the kind made from 100% peanuts or just peanuts and salt

:D
I'm actually not much of a nut person myself. I like cashews and almonds, and I tolerate peanuts themselves, but that's about it. Oh, and of course pistachios.

but I get these vegan subscription boxes and they send me some interesting stuff, peanut butter with cocoa powder or maple syrup... I've got one here with... let me look... hmm peanuts, raisins and salt, all organic. I need to try this...
pistachios are so great. I thought they were too delicious to be healthy, but I found out they are an excellent source of vitamin E and some other things

@Zanna that sounds awesome!

People call me a nut case. Mostly for eating a lot of them.

hah ikr! I will open it when I finish the amazing coconut jam I have got at the moment. The subscription boxes are so much fun :)

8:36 PM
I personally like walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds etc, (and cashews, but they aren't real nuts either IIRC), but I'm not a big fan of most others... And I detest peanuts, especially the roasted and salted ones.
I was wrong, cashews are indeed real nuts...
Not that anyone would care though

aren't bananas berries?
I don't mind whether cashews are really nuts or not, as long as I am allowed to eat them

can't imagine that, but let's ask the all-knowing duck...
o.O you were right...
The banana is an edible fruit – botanically a berry – produced by several kinds of large herbaceous flowering plants in the genus Musa. In some countries, bananas used for cooking may be called plantains, in contrast to dessert bananas. The fruit is variable in size, color and firmness, but is usually elongated and curved, with soft flesh rich in starch covered with a rind which may be green, yellow, red, purple, or brown when ripe. The fruits grow in clusters hanging from the top of the plant. Almost all modern edible parthenocarpic (seedless) bananas come from two wild species – Musa acuminata...
TIL
And banana plants are actually not even trees but herbs...
Mad world

lol
strawberries aren't berries either
and I think raspberries are something different

/shrug
I should go back to studying maths.... If it just wasn't that awful...
And once again I'm noticing that I probably heavily overuse the ellipsis (...) to end a sentence...
Because why only use one period when you can have 3?

8:54 PM
@Zacharee1 they are drupes
iirc
blueberries, comfortingly, are berries.
@ByteCommander I do it as well, I like to think it's because I'm still considering the issue, but more likely it reflects my absentmindedness

Should I exercise my gold powers and close this one ? askubuntu.com/q/885119/295286
I think those are pretty much duplicates
Eh,the title of the dupe target is effectively what they ask about. I'll just close it

seems fine to me to close it

I will immediately undo everything you do

@JacobVlijm yay, we have another thing to fight over , lol >:)

nice derpwolf poetry

:)
I've got a headache from coughing. Got the flu...
...so much for my holiday.

yeah, i usually get sick during spring/winter breaks, so i know how it is

10:08 PM
16.10 has no gcc by default ?!
@JacobVlijm bah! rubbish :(
get well soon

@Zanna all ubuntus come with gcc by default. Lubuntu doesnt since i know i had to install build-essential package
maybe things changed ?

This is both sad and extremely cool at the same time.

so my coworker today left with one of the previous coworkers . . .slightly wondering if theyre in relationship or not
and mostly wondering because they seem to have a.good age gap. The guy looks like he is in 40s while the girl is like 20s

@Zanna @Serg thanks! Going to sleep... see you!

i persobally dont mind age gap. My first love was signigicantly older than me.
@JacobVlijm Good night

10:20 PM
@JacobVlijm See you
@Zanna epic failure... the baking sheet I just bought is one inch too wide to fit in my apartment sized oven :(... No Sweet Potato Chips tonight!

Cut it?

It's pretty thick metal. I'd have to take it to work and use an angle grinder on it.

You had me convinced at "metal". I was thinking of paper.

It would basically take off the handles and make an even sized lip all around the pan.
I think I'll just exchange it tomorrow for a smaller size though :)
...tomorrow I'll take a measuring tape though...haha
Hmmm... Just need to post five more questions in AU until my next silver badge. I think I'll make it on LibreOffice Calc. I'm tired of "BASH"'ing my head against the wall like most of the questions so far.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix get a water jet :P

10:30 PM
Water jet to cut the metal pan?... sounds like fun :p
Hey you guys I just loaded up the "Project M audio visualizer" today it looks pretty good and works out of the box with no configuration. Bonus it's in Ubuntu's PPA already.

Q: Creating a PHP web app to manage KVM

John GredlerFor a project in class, I have been working on building a PHP-based web application that will allow for simple management of a KVM virtualization system. I already have it so that a custom VM can be created based on parameters given in the web app, but now I want to be able to view active VMs fro...

10:56 PM
@Serg nah it wasn't installed :O
@WinEunuuchs2Unix awww no!

Yup... bugs in bash and bugs in the kitchen with baking sheets :p
I posted an answer on a bounty. But have no clue how to setup grub boot with MAAS: askubuntu.com/questions/880965/…

I have no idea

Finally we both know nothing about something! :)
Anyway I find bounties hard to resist.... like a pirate searching for buried treasure or something.

good
that's what they are for, to attract people

Almost your bedtime young lady?

11:05 PM
it would be terrible if nobody tried to get bounties

Yes that would be horrible indeed!

past already, but, curses, this thing is still compiling

What language are you compiling in?

C
maybe C++
as well

Awww my old favorite... I have a million lines of code but haven't touched it in 15 years.

11:09 PM
yes I see it is
I haven't written the code sadly

Did somebody mention bounties and C ?

Mine is pretty much stale DOS / Novell Network text based stuff. Although I hope to start porting over to LAMP soon and maybe selling it again in five years.
Haa we wish it was C... it was with MAAS (Metal as a Service).

Oh . . . meh

Congrats on the Ctrl+R clipboard bounty BTW :)
It's a shame the OP never signed on to give feed back though.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Thanks. The answer turned out a quite enjoyable project, and quite useful too. I didn't realize how useful clipboard managers can be until I've written this one myself. I'm still adding features to it and I've a whole list that I want to implement

@Serg That's wonderful. Nothing more enjoyable than writing something for someone else you get to use yourself :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix exactly. And that seems to be a common theme. I've been using most of my indicators regularly. Some people just have great ideas. I cannot generate ideas myself. For instance, I've spend half the morning thinking what could i write for my next project

@Serg I know the feeling. I have to think up 5 questions in AU to get my next silver badge and I can only come up with 1 a week on average.
Then I end up answering the question myself the next day sometimes...haha
My next will be in LibreOffice with a right-click macro I've been wanting to create for months now.

hmmm sleep time :)

@Serg What about that idea of monitoring a /tmp/variable someone has setup in bash (or where ever) and throwing it up in the indicator bar for them along with an optional icon?
@Zanna Sweet "Potato" dreams @Zanna :)
oopsie double ping :(

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Oh, that one ? Yeah, that's actually good. I might add that to the project I've been planning to start for a while

If you want names how about "Systray portal"?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix hehe & I'm gonna make banana souffle pancakes for breakfast, I can dream of those too :D

mmmm... yummy... it's only an 8 hour plane ride to london I can be there for breakfast!
from edmonton we get to fly over the arctic circle as a short-cut.

that's awesome
I remember flying over Labrador on the way to New York City

yeah...except scenery sucks everything is white LOL
I've never been to Labrador but have been to Quebec and Newfoundland which borders it.
