12:00 AM
and another weird Q, which is definitely not about Ubuntu at all askubuntu.com/q/885159/367990

every time you guys post "weird question" my first thought is it's one of mine :P

can't help it :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix the tube goes there? Since when?!

@Zanna I'm pretty sure I rode the tube back in 1996. Did I have to take a cab to get there though?... can't remember.

Close those questions so we can vote to delete them...

12:15 AM
good evening!

That's not the tube
I've been to that station though, from Ealing
@IanC evening :)

guh
why can't customization be easy

@Zanna having a good day so far? :)

@IanC all 18 minutes of it have been pretty good
How about you?

12:19 AM
@Zanna Well eventually the train stops and you get on the tube right?

@Zanna hahaha, forgot it's a bit late there in England :p
@Zanna it was a great day! I went with some friends I met last week to a secret spot for surfing, ended up cutting my hand, faceplanting in the sand, but it was still awesome! I almost scored a tube in a day I thought there would barely be any waves. Also I found some surfing movie yesterday that was one of my inspirations to go ahead with my dreams and plans of getting back to the coast :)

wonders how you cut your hand with sand but then realizes he's done it to himself with paper and cardboard so doesn't post the question in chat

Strange things happen... I even once managed to stick a hair in my finger - don't ask me how

there is a support I used for holding a GoPro camera on it and I cut my hand there, no deep cuts, but quite annoying ones, they have been stinging the whole day

@ByteCommander good job

12:30 AM
as for the face, at first the waves were small, so breaking in the really shallow. I dived the surfboard nose falling heads first, and there was about 2ft of water
so I literally planted my face in the sand, I could swear I broke my teeth (which were still hurting earlier), but I didn't (yay! :D)

@IanC geez, thats gotta hurt ,man. Glad youre alright though

@Serg thanks man! It's all good, ended up having some real fun :)

@ByteCommander Sticking a hair in your finger sounds like some real bad-ass Bruce Lee Kung Fu stuff.
@IanC I used to man up all the time and not use medical supplies but lately I've found Polysporin is great on cuts.

There's a guy asking me to tutor him in C, he has exam on Wednesday. He sounds really desperate and wants to meet up on Monday, but on Monday I've an exam myself in electromagnetic fields. Really don't want to give up my time, but the guy sounds desperate

20 bucks an hour :)
backport Ubuntu for Windows from Windows 10 to Windows 8.1.

12:45 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I bought some antisceptic and band aids, because I work with my hands
@Serg what exactly he needs help with?

@IanC He didn't say. Considering that this is just the beginning of the semester, they're probably doing simple stuff, like loops and recursion.

^^^ and pointers and pointers to pointers. Maybe he can signon to this chat room for mass tutoring and we can give him some.... pointers :p

@Serg did he try to follow your lessons on github?
you could give him the links, you cover most of the basic stuff there

@IanC I don't think the problem is lack of manuals / lessons / tutorials as they are in abundance. I think it's finding the right metaphors to suit the individual to help them make that "mental leap" and that "ah ha!" moment.

@IanC I still haven't told him about github.

12:52 AM
by the way, the more I start to understand C for real (which I'm still far from accomplishing, but working my way there), I see it's kind of dumb for schools to teach C as a language for people that had no previous background with programming

^^^ They should start with bash and x11 and gnome, etc.

bashs syntax would scare lots of people hahaha

@IanC Absolutely agree. C is the type of language which is used for system programming and embedded devices and there's a lot of concepts in C that only start making sense when you get to that low level

Bash sytax screws me up everytime I write something... I have to do lots of googling.

I think either some basic or scripting language would be a good start

12:54 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix X11 programming is horribly complex also. Have you ever seen X11 code in C ?

BASIC is ideal for students = Beginners All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code.
@Serg I wasn't thinking of X11 internal C code, I was thinking of how you control X11 on your machine with it's config files.

Also , bash can be an OK language, but things like word-splitting take time to learn and get used to. You cannot teach that in a semester. I've been writing bash scripts for over 2 years now, produced like 1450 answers on AU and still learning something new every time

But that might be a bad example as I haven't done any X11 stuff myself just seen it referenced lots in archwiki.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix that's not programming though. It's system administration. Programming is when you write code

@Serg that's one of the things, but I also have been talking and reading about some more technical details of C, and so many programs lack being really conforming to the standards that describes C's behavior

12:58 AM
@Serg True but I think programmers need a least a superficial understanding of system administration and the gears that make the machine work.
When I went to school they taught us about punch cards, keypunch operators and machines, tape backups and drum (washing machine) hard drives even though we never saw them.
Similarly I think they should teach about X11 GUI even if they never program in it.
It gives a greater understanding of the total environment I think.
They can also teach about hard drives and SSD's along with partitions and BIOS.

VTC (GalliumOS, not Ubuntu) askubuntu.com/q/885166/367990

Well, in that case scripting language would be better. Python or Perl would be OK. Those two can do both system programming and general purpose programming
But Perl can be PITA, because so many things depend on the context in which variable is used

I've been told they do teach Perl in University.

But each university has different programs and different requirements for each major

Remember never to read out Perl code loud... (summoning Cthulhu etc)

1:03 AM
Also , what Byte said ^

What does Perl stand for?
Perl is short for " Practical Extraction and Report Language," although it has also been called a "Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister," among other expansions.

I guess it's just a reference for Oysters?
like, the perl?

Originally it doesn't mean anything, Larry Wall, the creator of the language, didn't have any specific acronym in mind

oooh, that's how you write it! haha
they pronounce the same right?

1:05 AM
yes

I think I'll stick with the current game plan Serg helped me work out the other night... I've go Unity source code downloaded on my machine and have started going through readme files.

I also think that C might be OK as a first programming language, but very often it's not being taught properly

#include stdio.h
main ()
print "hello world"

<stdio.h>* :p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix already wrong
#include <stdio.h>
void main() {
    printf("hello world\n");
}

1:09 AM
Well it's been 15 years... memory is rusty :)

@ByteCommander yes. Although you could drop void. If you don't declare type of funciton, it defaults to int

O'rly?

But that's code-golf stuff

is that standard or compiler/version dependent?

Proper way is how you show it. Or even better, declare int datatype and return 0 on exit

1:10 AM
Can we close this as problem went away on its own? askubuntu.com/q/885108/518562

@Serg I don't know, I really love C, but I've been more and more seeing the technical sides of it and realizing how heavy a task it is to learn how to properly program in C. It's easy to make mistakes that will make a apparently correct code non-std-compliant

I don't know if it's version dependent, but at least that's behavior on gcc

and interpreting the standard is a PITA

@AndroidDev Your wish is my close vote :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix :)

1:12 AM
the thing makes some rules in C almost a philosophical discussion

At the end of the day it doesn't matter if it's int main () or void main () or main () or pink faery sprinkles main () I'll use whatever's in the code I copy and paste :)

@IanC here's the thing though: there's many dialects of C. Each microcontroller vendor has their own implementation. Linux kernel has its own stuff. BSD has its own stuff. So you're right, standard C is more philosophical than practical.

I don't really like C because you're always just an inch away from traps that make you do random memory accesses and result in buffer overflows, access violations or writing/returning garbage.

@ByteCommander that's living in the edge! :D

@ByteCommander But with C you utilize libraries that do all the grunt work error checking for you.

1:14 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix well, it kinda matters. If you want program to exit with specific exit status, int will give you chance to return -1 or error 25, but void is always 0 status

And the old C98 standard we have to learn also has horrible restrictions like that variables may always only be declared at the beginning of a block, etc

@ByteCommander dangerous, but it performs better

@WinEunuuchs2Unix there might be proper libs, but we don't use them in class...

@ByteCommander Java is the polar opposite. I have to surround everything I do with try/catch :P

@Serg That's all academic when all main () does is say "Hello World!"... if it returns false the world isn't going to end right?

1:15 AM
@AndroidDev or you declare it as throws.

@ByteCommander But then you still have to surround the method call with try/catch

@Serg yeah, but then you have an implementation specific code, which can break on another implementation or in an upgrade to that current implementation

@AndroidDev Java has it's own problems. What pisses me off about Java is the whole public/private thing, and horribly lengthy declarations

Therefore Python.

That ^

1:17 AM
I hate installing Java libraries in my web browsers... I'm always paranoid the NSA gets a portal to me.

@Serg For variables or for methods? Or both?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix You can install the JRE without installing the browser plugin

@ByteCommander I guess it was on C89 that this was not allowed, on C99 you can declare in the middle of the code

@AndroidDev You can't argue with my paranoia :p

@AndroidDev both. At some point I'll go back and revisit that stuff. I'm sure there is reason for things, but for now it doesn't make sense.

As far as I can see it should be C from sea to shining sea :)

1:19 AM
damn, my hand is on fire, freaking annoying cuts

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I wasn't arguing... after all, I tell my browser to never run Flash unless I right click and allow it. It blocks a lot of ads that way too :)

Plus ever since I've had that CS 2 class with Prof. Gurka , it all left sour taste in my mouth and I don't really wanna go to the stuff that annoyed the heck out of me

@Serg You don't have to make them super long... you can just say int i = 4; that is a legal declaration.

Although, I probably will return to it soon. I'm learning a language that is very similar to Java right now

C++ has very similar syntax to Java

1:21 AM
C++ is on my list,too. I wanna do more programming for Unity and I can do that with C++

@Serg If I start a bounty and nobody answers, do I get the points back?

:(
That's kinda dumb

but we as your friends will post an answer like A+B=C and you can accept it and give us points :D

@AndroidDev well, you're basically paying for better question visibility. It doesn't guarantee that there will be answers
436
Q: How does the bounty system work?

A. Rex What is a bounty? What is the "Featured" tab on the homepage? How can I search for questions that have a bounty attached? How do I start a bounty? When can I start a bounty? How long is the bounty period? How do I award a bounty? Can I award a bounty to my own answer? Can I award a bounty to an ...

1:23 AM
Yeah, I get it. Otherwise there would be a ton of bounty questions
Still annoying though

What happens if there's no answer after the bounty period?

If after the end of the bounty period a question has no answers, no bounty will be awarded and the question will no longer be featured.

Bounties are best understood as exchanging reputation for higher question visibility and increased answerer motivation. A bounty does not guarantee a response and is not refunded if none are received.

#include <stdio.h>

int main(){
	char c = 'c';
	if(c++ == 'c'){
		printf("c++ == c!\n");
	}
}
definitive proof that c++ is equal to c

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I was trying to come up with some programming response to that, but I can't think of any

you shouldn't be able to do c++ on a character string, only on an int.

(I think I better make clear that I'm being ironic)

1:25 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix actually, you can

haha... oh the ironyyyyyy

c is stored as 7 bit ascii. Incrementing char, produces next ascii character

@Serg the type syntax checker should catch that error of ++ on a string.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix and you can do it on a character type

This is often used on microcontroller chips if you need smaller data type than int

1:26 AM
Well I don't do PLC so I wouldn't know

char is a a byte, I think, and int is 16 bits ?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Ok I thought of a response: throw new SarcasmDetectedException();

yes int is 16 bits... but there is double int too I think.

@Serg usually int is 4 bytes, but that's implementation dependent
int just has to be at least 16 bits long

But then there's BigInt too, at least in Java

1:28 AM
Well you can always use a floating point number with no decimals and use it as a big fake int :)

$ ./a.out
int 4
char 1

@WinEunuuchs2Unix that wouldn't be a good idea I guess

on my 64 bit OS

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Well if you're going to go that approach then may as well use a double instead of a float

@WinEunuuchs2Unix PLC are also different. They use ladder/relay logic

1:29 AM
floats are known to not be very precise, and not sure about their size requirements on the standard

If it's a float with no decimal places I would hope it would be accurate

PLC code ^
This one is for Allen Bradley brand of PLC's I think. We worked on one of those

I'm so not going to look at Process Logic Controller stuff tonight ^^^^

yeah, it is. LogixPro software, so it is Allen Bradley

@Serg Win7 VM with classic theme because VBox's video driver is trash?

1:32 AM
@AndroidDev never used Win7 in VM, so I don't know

I hate to confess it but I've never used VM :(

If you don't need to work on a different OS frequently, you don't need VM
I use my VMs mainly for testing the scripts/indicators I wrote
Speaking of which, I need to reinstall my MATE VM. That thing crashed and I cannot get it back

I was thinking of using in Windows 8.1 next month when I start gaming big time so I can still hotkey over to Ubuntu. Nothing more frustrating than running Windows and wanting to do something in Linux and realizing "oh no Ubuntu isn't running I can't try that".

Yeah, that might be a good idea.
Pity I cannot use a VM at work. Would be so much easier than carrying my laptop arround

Considering doing that -^ I only have an account to follow one local group I am a part of, but the temptation to use it for other things is always there.
And Facebook's tracking cookies are everywhere.

1:39 AM
Fakebook needs cookies to make sure you are appropriately fake like the fake news else they forward your profile to NSA :)

@Seth Dang.
I wish I could do that, but I don't have a phone I'm allowed to text with, so that's the biggest way I communicate with a lot of people
Plus my Ultimate frisbee team uses it all the time

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Throw another GPU into your computer, and then you can do this: pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/…

@AndroidDev I have two GPU's in my laptop... do I throw the third GPU into the DVD caddy?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Uhmmm....................................
I was assuming you had a desktop

Maybe get a water cooled GPU and plug it into one of the USB 3 ports?
It could sit under the coffee table and warm my feet in the winter :)

1:45 AM
@RPiAwesomeness Ouch. Yeah that's hard.

What about a bitcoin mining rack?

USB3 has nowhere near the bandwidth needed for a GPU. A PCIE 3.0 x16 slot can do 8GB/sec bandwidth
Granted, most GPUs can run fine on an x8 link, but still

@ByteCommander Probably easier creating your own new bitcoin than mining that oversaturated market.

I don't know what your circumstances are @RPiAwesomeness, but TracFone is a super cheap way of getting off the ground and they support bringing your own Android and iOS devices now. (some people have gotten it to work with Windows Phones too).
$20 will get you off the ground in minutes and 90 days of service 1000 SMS for $5, data at $10 a GB. That'll get you quite a lot of messaging.

Nokia just released a retro 3552 for 50 pounds.

1:47 AM
@Seth Tmobile has some crazy good deals, if you get the specials. I have 100mins of talk, unlimited text and 5GB of 4G and then unlimited 2G for $35/mo

@AndroidDev that is a pretty good deal. I don't use my phone hardly enough to pay that much though. My bill comes out to $7 a month plus the occasional $5 to refill my SMS bucket.

I use my cell phone for data....reading websites and stack exchange app when travelling... Only get like 1 call a month and 5 texts a month.
But I still pay $40 for unlimited everything.

@Seth I'm always considering doing that, even though I like to keep touch with some people and sharing pictures once in a while of what's been going on, there are lots of things that really annoy me on facebook

You can always create your on fakebook... you can call it realbook... just need a single server for your small group of friends to start off.

Amazon EC2 Micro VPSs are free for a year
But you'd have to have the know how

1:57 AM
@AndroidDev only for very minimal usage.

I bet there is already open source stuff for facebook stuff
Data Selfie: This Free And Open Source Tool Shows How Facebook’s AI Tracks You All The Time: fossbytes.com/data-selfie-chrome-extension-facebooks-ai-track
^^^ interesting
Found it. There are 22 alternatives to facebook which are open source: alternativeto.net/software/facebook/?license=opensource
If you have an investor with a few million dollars you can become a multi-billion dollar company in no time.
Even better facebook has started an open-source push so there is even more code to draw off of thanks to them!

2:25 AM
Well, folks, my coffee is made and my desk is about to be cleared of all the trash, so I'll go and prepare for exam tomorrow. Fish me luck in the size of a duck

2:36 AM
@AndroidDev Yeah, they have absolutely 0 service where I Live soooo

TracFone also has the advantage of allowing you to get service on Verizon or AT&T, which is more than can be said for most other MVNOs.

1 hour later…
4:00 AM
@NathanOsman a question that has "Nathan" written all over it :) -- askubuntu.com/questions/885190/…

@WinEunuuchs2Unix the trains that go to Slough aren't tube trains. But yeah you can get the tube from Ealing or whatever, just have to change trains
@IanC Aww wow, that sounds pretty epic

4:18 AM
@Zanna OH my up at 4:18 am... aren't you the early bird :p
@Zanna I think that's what happened... above ground train transferring to below ground train (aka subway / tube)

1 hour later…
5:48 AM
@IanC looks like pointers on my system are hungry for some beef O.o

2 hours later…

Strict transport security and public key pinning are extremely dangerous. Learned that the hard way...

well, dangerous unless you have lots of backups and security methods.

8:08 AM
@KazWolfe Backups will not help with this.

8:20 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix nah I just woke up thirsty, went to get water and couldn't resist a peak

@blade19899 If you back up private keys and keep things renewed (and have secondary pinned keys), you're safe

Someone got challenged to a duel of boots again... xD

Q: Help with duel booting Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 and Windows 10

Ajt8000This is a multiple question kind of post. I am preparing to set up a duel boot on my computer and I want to make sure everything gets set up how I would like it. The pc currently has one 250gb ssd which has Windows 10 on it, alongside two 1tb hdd's. I have bought another ssd which I want to i...

@KazWolfe When I go to a website on my server I get a download message...
Is that also because HTST or PKP?

8:43 AM
I want to (re)install ubuntu (upgrade from 32bit install to 64bit), but keep my existing home directory untouched. I don't have a separate home partition. Is there a way to do this ?

@ByteCommander o0

@JonasCz No. You'll need to copy your home dir to somewhere else and then copy it back after installing.
I can't, off the top of my head, think of any reason why changing the bitness should affect anything in your home dir, so that will probably work fine. Unless you have any binaries in there, anyway.

9:05 AM

@KazWolfe "http2" in the listen 80...... that was dumb of me ;(

9:38 AM

maybe deserves an upvote askubuntu.com/a/885301/527764

@Zanna very decent to do it like that.

:) I thought that was the standard way

...for some decent people :)

I am trying to dive into nice python modules I am not yet familiar with, but browsing AU for questions is too tempting. I hate AU.

1:02 PM
@AndroidDev someone better mod ping them maybe

1:21 PM
Hey, has anyone here used the Ubuntu SDK to build apps for desktop?
All the documentation seems to be either about snap or building for mobile, but all I want is to build a simple application that I can use on my machine.

1:41 PM
@Zanna Huh?

@AndroidDev if CelticWarrior hasn't been in the room recently, they won't get a notification for being pinged. (Unless a mod does a super-ping)

She means better warn a mod that celtic warrior got 2k (kidding)

@JacobVlijm lol

Hello everybody ! :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix hahaha ... upvotes for my answers would be better ! :D

Hey, an eye pops up

@Serg well, no one did ... still stagnation ... not a single +1 in the last days ... :(

@JacobVlijm where ? on your phone ? :D

Yes, in the section on the right (the legendary one)

@Seth I love the new meme :D

Sorry to interrupt, I just wanted to ask again (now that there are people here) if anyone is using Ubuntu SDK for build apps for desktop.

@Arc676 Nothing to be sorry ... unfortunately I don't have any experience with the Ubuntu SDK. :)

2:04 PM
@Arc676 not using it...

Alright then. I can't find anything regarding exporting to desktop.
Anyone know any good easy-to-use, good-for-beginners ways to develop apps for Ubuntu? Not looking for anything too complicated

@Arc676 snapcraft.io might be something for you :)

Thanks, I'll look into it. I can use the QML and C++ backend I've already written, right?

@Arc676 I don't know, but there should be some information about this in the documentation. :)

@cl-netbox Alright, thanks for the tip. I'll see if I can figure it out.

2:13 PM
@Arc676 You're welcome ... unfortunately I can't do more for you (this time). :)

I like the new SO top bar. Nice and fancy.

attaches onto every living being in the room, and saps them of their bio-electrical energy as a survival tactic

<-- glad he's not much alive today thus resitant to Thomas' bio-electrical energy magic

I wondered why my foot had gone to sleep

blame it on Monday
everything sleepy still
my eyes most of all

well I am l;iterally drained - no sleep because I had to pull an all-nighter to finish a paper for class.
gonna go home after my work shift and pass out to get actual rest

2:43 PM
:(
that sucks

3:11 PM
Aha, I just found out tagging after a close vote has no effect. I thought tagging this one askubuntu.com/q/885356/72216 would turn muru's vote into actual closure (I knew I could't tag it and close myself), but it doesn't.

3:37 PM
Ah that's interesting
It now looks very well hammered indeed
You can't get much more closed than that

Hi Oleksii, as far as I can see, you never accepted an answer to your question. That could be because you never got a satisfying answer to one of your questions, but also because you are not familiar with the fact that accepting is the appropriate way to indicate an answer works for you. So, if any of the answers is what you are looking for, please consider accepting and /or voting (tick the big "V" below the up/down arrows on the left). — Jacob Vlijm 2 hours ago
^ for a question that was posted only an hour earlier?
seems a little overkill heh

Why? the other question were much, much longer ago, and I think it was pretty decently asked.

@JacobVlijm hold still for a moment... saps away @JacobVlijm's bioelectrical energy as sustenance until he can go sleep

:)
If someone got 19 answers on sometimes highly upvoted q's, you can be pretty sure he or she is not familiar with accepting.
I have got eternal thanks and honor from OP sometimes for pointing out.

4:06 PM
Totally inappropriate to ask it here, but anyone familiar with numpy?
Nah, forget it.

@JacobVlijm that python library?

Yeah, got a weird result in linspace

Ahaaa, thanks!
Haha SO, sure

Hi Thomas ! :) Nice to see you @ThomasWard ! :)

4:20 PM
saps the bioelectrical energy from @cl-netbox for sustenance
