@dessert are you Dutch
German
great, another one :p

2:27 AM
@prototype700 If you want we can continue trying to fix the mouse's apparently malformed input. However if you would rather replace/ignore the mouse one of us could write the comments up as an answer just to be done with the question

1 hour later…

Apple is thinking of acquiring Shazam?

Might be good for siri

2 hours later…
5:56 AM
Guys. Check it out: github.audio

So calming.

That is really cool.
I could listen to that for hours.

@NathanOsman Same. I could go to sleep listening to that.

I might even try that.
Heck, I could stare at it for hours.
Does the music get faster during more busy times?
I mean - I'm not expecting too many commits late Friday night :P

Now I'm curious!!
It's so. calming.

6:24 AM
so... got unifi equipment finally for real :D
i now have wifi a third of a mile from my house

Niiice.

also their DPI is scary

I have six antennas on my router and I can get WiFi outside.
Which may not sound all that impressive.
Until you realize I'm in an apartment with 30+ other APs.

7:10 AM
good morning
we have currently a snowy winter landscape out there
sadly it might not be enough to make the snow stay

I should check the temperature here.
@Seth That's a bit less... melodic to me. But certainly faster.

@NathanOsman Indeed. I think the speed is what ruins the melody. That and they're using slightly different sounds

It's dipping below zero just before sunrise.
As you can see, it's kinda cool indoors too :P

@Videonauth WE LOVE HATS! Winter Bash will begin in 3 days, 14 hours, 56 minutes, and 23 seconds.

9:18 AM
there's also one for wikipedia: listen.hatnote.com

@TheWanderer Of course another German, what did you think? Who cares for Poland nowadays…

9:47 AM
Is it really true AU doesn't have a question “How to treat filenames with spaces?” or am I missing something here?

how do you search?

use this google.de/… it is quite more accurate and complete
@dessert ^...

@Videonauth I'll stick to startpage, but that's the same thing – you're right, it gives better results. A shame… startpage.com/rvd/…
Seems true that we don't have a canonical question about it, I think I'll add one explaining the most important things. This one gets near it, but misses single quotes and the explanation what they do differently – and probably won't get found by somebody searching how to treat filenames…

10:20 AM
Hahaha, ls doesn't even display a newline in a filename properly:
$ touch "$(printf "newline\nfile")"
$ ls
newline?file  space file

4 hours later…
1:57 PM
Hello :)

2:16 PM
@dessert it's not supposed to. No filename should have a new line in it. Ever. Regardless of the environment.
not in Windows, not in Linux, not in Mac, not in ObscureOddballOSFromTheDarkAges, not anything.
any filename with such an escape character in them is invalid, and needs to have its filename sanitized before use
because it causes non-standard behavior to keep it in there.
I ran into this with a particularly nasty piece of home-grown code to handle emails and filenames got mangled because of the chaotic piece of crap that Exchange is.
so i've had to sanitize filenames ever since in my code. Which is now second nature to me, mind you, but...
same point.

I am using 16.04 LTS. But why is my linux version 4.10-0-42?
can i upgrade to a higher version?

@gansub Mind doing an apt-cache policy linux-image-generic for me?
and including the output here?

linux-image-generic:
Installed: (none)
Candidate: 4.4.0.103.108
Version table:
4.4.0.103.108 500
500 http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates/main amd64 Packages
500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-security/main amd64 Packages
4.4.0.21.22 500
500 http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages

right...

so ?

2:30 PM
@gansub in theory you can install up to 4.13.0-19 but I have no proof that it'll work proper - that's just what I see in the repositories

i see
if and when i upgrade to 18.04 will it sync ?

you can get that with sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04-edge if you want it now

why am i so behind ?

@gansub not sure. It should put you on the standard kernel for 18.04, but I'm not sure what that is off-hand at the moment
@gansub you aren't.
not really.

well may i know yours ?

2:32 PM
except that...

Q: Why don't the Ubuntu repositories have the latest versions of software?

Thomas WardWhy are packages in the official Ubuntu repositories older than the latest (upstream) versions from Debian Sid, PPAs, the authors, etc.?

^ this is relevant (kernel too)

@ThomasWard 4.14.0-17

@gansub i'm not on the edge packages, standard 4.4.0-101-generic

so you are ahead of me ?

@Videonauth could change if there's an evil
@gansub no, i'm actually behind you. I don't upgrade my kernel to have latest HWE usually, or at least, not the edge HWE kernels

well thats the kernel it upgraded today to

2:33 PM
because older hardware.

who here is using 18.04 ?

/me in a VM

@gansub nobody if they want to get support from askubuntu.com
otherwise just us people testing it in VMs or containers.

i see
so on that version of Ubuntu what is the version of linux

askubuntu.com does very limited support for the 'in development' release, at least until it is released, then we provide standard support.
@gansub 18.04? should be 4.14.0-17
at least, rightnow.

2:34 PM
so that is ahead of mine ?

Ubuntu 17.10 on proposed branch: Linux NEXUS-ONE 4.13.0-19-generic #22-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 4 11:58:07 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
not sure but i think the normal branch is at 4.13.0-16

last time i upgraded from one LTS to the next i lost my data
i had to do a reinstall from scratch hopefully the 16.04 LTS to 18.04 LTS will be smoother
i think i had a lot of PPAs
this time no PPA at all
plus no Intel compiler all gcc or gfortran

there is a reason backup programs exist :)

but i do not like PPAs

@ThomasWard why edge Thomas ?

2:41 PM
they mess up

@cl-netbox latest package version in the repos.
that's all.
i'm not using it :p

@ThomasWard sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04

i know how to upgrade my kernel thanks :p
i'm not the one who was asking how to get a newer one
that was @gansub

@gansub sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04

do you agree PPAs mess up upgrades @ThomasWard

2:44 PM
@ThomasWard I know ... just mentioned it because you suggested to install the edge (beta/dev) version to @gansub :)

@gansub considering I maintain 15 separate PPAs for separate types of software that replace standard-repository versions with updated versions that I've personally made sure work?
the answer to your question is "it depends on the ppa"
@cl-netbox let's not berate me today, i'm still waking up nor did I directly say they should use it. They asked what the newest available kernel was, I told them what's in the repos. I never explicitly said "This is going to work" :P

i think a PPA is a non standard way to change the repository

@gansub you're entitled to your opinion, but given the rules around how releases get pretty version-locked after release, it's the only way other than compiling thingsi from source to get newer versions of a given piece of software
cse in point the nginx repos
but i maintain those PPAs and the nginx package in ubuntu so...

@ThomasWard good morning Thomas ! :) have a huge mug of coffee ... sending it over the ocean :D

so i do not use QGIS which is the most popular open source GIS software because it requires a PPA

2:47 PM
@gansub that's your choice. Others might use the PPA.
yawns

i remember on 12.04 i had to use PPA for installing google-earth
and then when i upgraded to 14.04 LTS lost everything and reinstalled from disk

@Videonauth that is in stable -> 4.13.19 ... good afternoon to you ! :)

there was a guy here i forget his name but he remote trouble shooted for 3 hrs

ah ok, i never know exactly which kernel is now in stable, like i said im always on proposed

to remove that PPA.w e finally gave up

2:51 PM
@gansub because one ppa broke your system doens't mean that all PPAs are bad. That's all I'mma say on the matter, because if I want to have a nonstandard package version in my system, I usually am backporting it myself :P

@ThomasWard are you a kernel developer ?

i don't mess with the kernels. That's the one thing I leave alone.
because I usually don't need the newest Linux kernel for things

but you are a systems developer ?
i am an application developer

define 'systems developer'
i'm a professional linux systems administrator and IT Security professional/specialist.

@gansub he is the master of chaos, evil and disaster (recovery) ... :D :D :D

2:53 PM
one who makes a lot of kernel calls

@gansub i'm nto a software developer. And if I'm making kernel calls I'm not making them directly, I'm using well-developed libraries which do that for me. :P
that wasn't my initial point

right. i do that as well i.e use well developed tested libraries

my point was that messing with the kernel has its own inherent risks
this is why if I'm going to go fussing with the kernel I'm not doing it on my main system
i'mi doing it in a dedicated system so I dont' fubar things
or in VMs which won't impact the primary machine
the same goes for testing programs and such in sandboxes.
or analyzing a particularly nasty piece of malware in a sandboxed, isolated lab environment

i recently installed a heavy duty software from source one that uses a lot of external libaries including Qt
vapor.ucar.edu/internal/downloads/source-distributions is probably the toughest and hardest install from source i ever did
that Qt compile was something

you've basically just described Arch.
this is why i'm not a fan of building from source code.
at least, if I can avoid it.

2:57 PM
you probably use binaries ?
that is what Support told me - we do not support compiing from source code. use the binaries

@ThomasWard dint you want to say gentoo ?

@gansub depends on the software, and specific cases.
there are pieces of software which I compile from source, but it's rare.
and it's usually Java files that end up as JARs

well Tom it is usually very easy

@Videonauth I meant to say (‡▼益▼)
and don't call me Tom
only my girlfriend, family, and close friends can call me that.

just run ./configure then make then make check then make install
ok @ThomasWard :)

2:59 PM
... okay at this point I'm going to assume you're trolling
because I'm not that stupid.
goes to do something productive with his time rather than sit here and be trolled

nowadays installation packages have changed. many of them do not use configure
it is cmake now
no i am not trolling you
just sharing my viewpoint
it is when the build process fails finding help can be incredibly challenging

well guys , it was already a busy day for me, im going to relax a bit and watch some movies

as you say when you post a question people usually say just install the binaries

laters

ok @ThomasWard thanks for helping me with finding out the linux version. apologies if you felt that i was trolling you. i assure you i did not. just a fellow Linux/Ubuntu traveller
have a good weekend
bye

Q: Why are comments aggressively removed while still actively editing a question based on them?

Zeiss IkonI've been massaging a question related to my laptop losing ability to log in after switching between bumblebee and nvidia-prime, then back -- and while I was editing the question, all the comments (mine, as well as those of Organic Marble, who'd been trying to help me) were removed en masse. Thi...

5:16 PM
well that was fun
I just readded the System UI Tuner to LGUX
along with the Settings gear long-press to enable action
it isn't perfect, though, because I can't figure out how switch cases work in Smali, so long-pressing the gear and then letting go leaves it spinning until you long press again

Q: Display setting resetting

PanBramborI have just installed an Ubuntu 17.10 and set up my display settings as usual, (main)1680*1050 on the left, (laptop)1366*768 on the right. What happens is that display settings is seemingly at randon reset to "mirror" at 1280*720. Also, applying display settings works only half of the times, the ...

After I install the ubuntu 17.0.4, the wheel on my mouse don't work anymore
Can anyone help me out?
Funny, I even cannot find /etc/init.d/rc.local in 17.0.4..

@yode there is no Ubuntu 17.0.4, you probably mean 17.04

@dessert Sorry, that is a typo..

@yode /etc/rc.local

@ThomasWard Oh, god. Could you tell me something,How do you know it?

7:56 PM
because i've been using Linux since 2009.
and i have some nasty kernel hax in place on my system that involve certain modules that can't be loaded by systemd so need to be manually bumped to 'active' on my system as the last step in boot
which systemd can still run /etc/rc.local for some things
so blargh.

the wheel on my mouse don't work anymore on my 17.0.4. @ThomasWard
Could you help me a little?

8:08 PM
not really that's a hardware issue beyond my skillset

8:33 PM
@yode Did you see askubuntu.com/questions/17414/…? If none of the solutions work I think you should post a question about it providing hardware info.

1 hour later…
9:36 PM
@Videonauth I posted it: askubuntu.com/questions/984801/…

yep seen it :)

Q: How do I enter a file or directory name containing spaces or special characters in the terminal?

dessertI have a collection of files and directories with strange names, they contain spaces and the special characters \, *, ), ( and ?: $ ls -l -rw-rw-r-- 1 dessert dessert 23 Dec 9 12:04 ( -rw-rw-r-- 1 dessert dessert 22 Dec 9 12:04 ) -rw-rw-r-- 1 dessert dessert 12 Dec 9 12:04 * -rw-rw-r-...

I took the newline character out, that was too strange. :)

:P yes newline is strange and should be avoided at all costs
mabe you could mention that; +1 however never the less

The last codeblock totally confuses google prettify – yay!

9:58 PM
@dessert yep and i can tell you why :)
echo content >'\' # print “content” into file “\”

@Videonauth obviously it thinks the backslash escapes the single quote – that's rather poor, isn't it?

google prettify see you here escaping a ' character
yep but never the less that are simple parsers which are by far not that evolved as the shell parser itself and so on

10:21 PM
@Videonauth Thanks for trying, but I don't think we can fix that, it's either removing the syntax highlighting for the whole last code block (I vote against that) or leaving it like that.

or escaping the escape caracter which would make the line wrong :P
'\\' would fix it
but i guess that would be wrong in this case

Yes, that would be a horrible workaround. :D

10:36 PM
hey, thought y'all might want to be aware of this codein.withgoogle.com/tasks/5637753310019584
so you might want to keep a closer watch on for the next... month

@Mithrandir sorry for asking, but what exactly does one get out of this?

out of... what?

@Mithrandir out of doing what google tells people to do there

well, a possible visit to Google HQ

@dessert thanks for that question :) It's been a somewhat boring day here, so it kinda broke the monotony a little bit for me
"here" as in my location, not on the site
@Seth This is so ... Zen ! I love it !!!

10:48 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy It's a pleasure – and we have something to link to now. There are a lot of questions where quoting in fact is the only problem, of course sometimes well hidden by XY.

@dessert Yep. A lot of issues could be solved via good canonical post. I actually have one in mind, just have been putting it off for a while. Maybe will post it next week some time :)

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy ikr. It's so awesome.

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy Great! I'm currently writing one about manpages and how to access them.

Perhaps one day I'll be smart enough to write a book about Linux and shells. I once wanted to write a book on App Indicators, but that stayed as an idea only, plus I figured with Unity being cancelled there was no point in that

@SergiyKolodyazhnyy well you could do for gnome then ;)

10:55 PM
@Videonauth Maybe someday when I know enough about GNOME, and write extensions for it, and let go of resentment towards it. We'll see

Why is there no man at? Is that a bash builtin?

Nope, at is not a builtin
I have man page for it, though

@dessert huh ? man at gives me a man page

Sorry guys, wasn't installed. :P

10:59 PM
The at utility shall read commands from standard input and group them together as an at-job, to be executed at a later time. The at-job shall be executed in a separate invocation of the shell, running in a separate process group with no controlling terminal, except that the environment variables, current working directory, file creation mask, and other implementation-defined execution-time attributes in effect when the at utility is executed shall be retained and used when the at-job is executed. When the at-job is submitted, the at_job_id and scheduled time shall be written to standard error. yeah thats so cool
there is one like this for wikipedia too

According the developer, github.audio was actually inspired by hatnote

I love the visualization of the activity tho

@Videonauth Try just the Chinese Wikipedia!

@dessert what about it ?

11:19 PM
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy It's so… calm!
