6:00 PM
@IanC it's been a glorious day in Londres

Now here's an interesting Q:
1
Q: LibreOffice after update from 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS, Blacked Toolbar Icon Background

J.Miguel Ruiz M.With LibreOffice 5.2.0.4 after update from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS, Blacked Toolbar Icon Background When Using Breeze Theme

goood :D
I just got back from work, was called names by a dutch guy, not my fault but I did almost hit his face with a monkey fist :p

@Zanna thanks ...
I was actually trying to know that policyKit thing and answer both of your and E.K's question

apart from that, the sun is out, and tomorrow is my day off :)

6:05 PM
meh! that merging brought me a Necromancer badge!

Oh, wait, now it says removed. Never mind :)

yeah, someone woke up the green goblin already.

Oli is around here...
time to hide?...

Oli!

What is it with bad questions today???

6:07 PM
bbl. hope. see you tomorrow.. night all :)

@Anwar nighters
@AndroidDev what do you mean today?

YAY Tomas is no longer really paranoid!
Well, as much, i should say.

good, a middle ground between kadin and tomas would be nice

funny how knowledge makes you less scared

Q: ActiveX for Ubuntu

AtaullahI need to access my DVR over Internet using Firefox using www.instaon.com, but when I try to login it asks for ActiveX plug-in. Is there an alternative of ActiveX for Ubuntu?

Er... what would be a good way of dealing with this..?

activex in 2016?

6:24 PM
^
Also bad news
School admins blocked SE on their network
So no chat while at school

gg no re
i mean i could tell you a way around it but i'm lazy and your admins are idiots.

Let's see how long it takes for them to block AU :<

good practice lol
AU is SE.

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice you said SE?

6:26 PM
Yes... it is.

They blocked stackexchange.com
Not AskUbuntu.com

same servers.
this is your admins being dumb. They should block resolutions of hostnames, not hostnames themselves

Yea I know
but they don't

Can I get their email? I'd like to educate them on proper practices

6:28 PM
We can't have uneducated admins out there.

Also VPN isnt an option for me
ChromeOS, and they blocked VPN Sites

I wasn't going to suggest that.

Oh
hm
brb getting food

First off, why ChromeOS, second, why block SE, third, get your own bloody computer!

is it a school-issued chromebook?

6:30 PM
Fourth, ChromeOS has a lot of really cool tricks/glitches.

@KazWolfe You mean lack thereof?
@edwinksl My thoughts exactly.

@AndroidDev i mean both.

@KazWolfe No, I was replying to one of your earlier comments.

@AndroidDev And I replied to the comment that replied to one of my previous comments

@KazWolfe Wait, what?

6:35 PM
better?

@KazWolfe - I'm asking if you meant lack thereof here: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/32167682#32167682

I know.
I mean, it can make you both more and less scared.

@KazWolfe But in this specific the lack of knowledge would make you less scared

My two cents, Chromebooks suck
4

@RPiAwesomeness Crouton to the rescue!

6:37 PM
@AndroidDev ssssh don't reveal secrets

Seriously. Just buy a super low-end device and slap Lubuntu/Xubuntu on it. Same experience in terms of battery life, but with way better value

@KazWolfe This computer was free so :) and I mean either way it isnt a chromebook. They bought dells, then wiped the OS and installed chrome

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice o_O

ChromeOS has a lot of good school management tools.

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice That's not even possible!!!

6:38 PM
I didn't know you could install ChromeOS on a non-Chromebook device

@RPiAwesomeness HUH???

U can make chrome sticks from Chrome OS

How did they do that??

6:38 PM
@KazWolfe True
@AndroidDev Oh, believe me, if I could I would. Stupid work decided everyone has to use Chromebooks. And they are absolute crap.

gotta love the one-size-fits-all policy

Wait, I found how they did it: neverware.com/#introtext-3

@Anwar that question still needs a good answer as far as I'm concerned.

@KazWolfe ^^^

i still think chromium is better than that

6:40 PM
@RPiAwesomeness And they won't let you put crouton on it?
@RPiAwesomeness - The Chrombook Pixel has an i5 and 8GB of RAM though...
That's pretty powerful...

@AndroidDev Yup, because it's a shared machine >:(

What would you recommend for getting past this stuff? Im new to chromeOS @KazWolfe

@RPiAwesomeness Whhhaaaaaaaaaa?

I would recommend not doing anything because it's your school's computer.
And it's their internet.

6:42 PM
@AndroidDev Yup :P

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice Tether to your phone.

@AndroidDev will you stahp with the secrets?!

@RPiAwesomeness Wow. Just wow.

6:42 PM
they obviously have a reason to keep you where they want you.

Not sure if I can safely DC from the schools network

And, if this is the case, i'd recommend not trying to get around it.
Just... talk to your admins and ask them why. Explain why it's useful.
I've gotten many sites unblocked that way.

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice Hadn't though of that.

I am not joking.

6:43 PM
My admins are aids

still better to ask for permission than beg for forgiveness

If I'm lucky they won't block AskUbuntu
IF

@KazWolfe True...

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice I've been suspended in high school a few times for bypassing network blocks/restrictions.
They finally got the message and just gave me admin power though.

6:45 PM
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice I think HTTPS encrypts the URL... so maybe only use askubuntu.com ?

nah
Its got blockas
ive tried

@AndroidDev this works only for idiot firewalls

Unless they've MITM'd the connetion.
Which i don't doubt, honestly.

@KazWolfe That sounds like what his admins are :)

6:46 PM
Kaz it also might not be possible for them to setup exceptions, considering this is a server system IDK what kind of control they have

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice - Bottom line, just pull it up on only your phone, and you'll be fine.

Maybe not
They imbedded lightspeed into chrome via an extension

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice They can't MITM your 4G connection.

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice They own your phone?

6:47 PM
No however this computer is setup under the school
so no matter the wifi

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice - I'm not talking about tethering. Just pulling it up on your phone.

Oh
XDDDDDDD
Also it seems like they didn't account for other wifi networks

Ive worked in school IT.
They usually have that control, but they don't use it.

M
Interesting
WAIT

But like I said... THEY HAVE A REASON

6:49 PM
Im an awkward teenager! I can't TALK to someone
Email time

You're a teen.
You don't have rights.

They can do this and you have no recourse. Just accept it or bring your own computer

Cant really bring my own

wait, lightspeed? yeah everything's MITM'd lol

6:50 PM
Yep :(

rip your accounts

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice Then just don't mess with it.
@KazWolfe HTTPS?

@AndroidDev Used lightspeed. Yep.
Any traffic thru chrome is captured

@KazWolfe Ummmm...
That's just wrong.

Lightspeed in this case is browser-side.

Meaning they don't even need to cert.

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice Yeah, okay, then don't mess with it :)

Impossible to get past pretty much
My school is actually stupid though
They didnt disable hard wiping the laptop
So last year

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice O_O

We all installed Cruton
:>

6:53 PM
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice And then...

sigh

SOMEHOW they didn't realize

tl;dr stop messing with school infra

We got off clean, new laptops this year, so no traces

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice I see.

6:54 PM
if you need SE, ask admins to unblock it because it's useful

Ill email them

@KazWolfe Especially if he's doing a programming course...
Stack Overflow...

SO is not under SE

My programming teacher could probably convince the admins to unblock it

6:55 PM
well not under the subdomain

He's like the dad I wished I had

protip: teachers get no blocks

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice - Doing any crypto in your programming? Crypto SE is a subdomain: crypto.stackexchange.com

Hehe I know nothing without the internet, and SE above all

6:56 PM
Nah, we be doing Java

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice - Code review? codereview.stackexchange.com

Last year shudders we used... VB

:(

they're going to selectively whitelist sites

^
Maybe not actually
They're kinda lazy

6:57 PM
no, they will.
unless you have a reason to convince them to unblock all of SE

I'm definitely not here

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice - Well, all I can say is, if they have lightspeed installed, don't touch anything.
@Zacharee1 lol

yeah. just don't mess with anything

Wait, I have 10.4k chat rep?
Someone look
I'm on mobile

@Zacharee1 Yep

6:59 PM
Cooool
I can accept flags against @edwinksl now >:}

@Zacharee1 Because rep > 10k?

Chat Rep is total across the entire network

Yurp

@Zacharee1 i am totes in awe of your powers

And now I can do some special chat stuff
