12:00 AM
he started it, sure, but I don't think he really did much directly to influence the development of the project (like all of the Debian Developers who actually made the OS work).

I can't find the great article I read about the founding of ubuntu atm, but he was, and is, still fairly hands on. (and was more so at the beginning)
@KazWolfe I don't recall Unity starting with the idea of convergence. That came later.
Poorly executed, yes. Mark has even admitted that.

when i jumped from Gnome2 to Unity, it was an extremely jarring transition that made no sense and seemed like a step backwards.

still preferring Unity over XFCE, KDE, Gnome and LXDE

well I started using linux with 11.04, when Unity became default and gnome2 was still offered, and I tried both. Ended with Unity.

yay for not being able to customize ubuntu as per sabdfl's decision to keep the bar on the left.

12:03 AM
That's a point. I still like it mostly.

@Seth wait, have I been using Linux longer than you?? o_O I started with 8.04 or lower

@KazWolfe Different people, different tastes. I still don't understand why we're having this conversation. Like gnome2? Use MATÉ and profit.

@Zacharee1 7.04 here

MATÉ

12:05 AM
MATÉ?

@KazWolfe beat me by a year

@Seth still, for a free os, that move was kinda ... lacking ... in freedom of technology

Played too much PokÉmon?

but I got the LTS ;p

12:05 AM
Huh. Maybe they stopped writing it that way?

@KazWolfe The point of Linux may be to be able to do what you want with it, but that doesn't necessarily extend to software that runs on Linux (ahem AMD, NVIDIA, Oracle)

And I feel like a noob now, having started with 14.10...

@ByteCommander WAT

@Zacharee1 wouldn't be surprised.

@Seth They wrote it that way?
@Seth o_O

12:06 AM
@Zacharee1 I thought so.

Yup. The Unicorn.

Doesn't it inflect the proper pronunciation?
@ByteCommander newbie ;):p
we should ask @Rinzwind when he started using Linux...

Still having more rep than all three of you :P

I thought it was "Ubuntu Mate"
pronounced as spelled

nope.

12:07 AM
Ubuntu MATE is a free and open-source Linux distribution and an official derivative of Ubuntu. Its main differentiation from Ubuntu is that it uses the MATE desktop environment as its default user interface, based on GNOME 2 which was used for Ubuntu versions prior to 11.04, instead of the Unity graphical shell that is the default user interface for the Ubuntu desktop. The Ubuntu MATE project was founded by Martin Wimpress and Alan Pope and began as an unofficial derivative of Ubuntu, using an Ubuntu 14.10 base for its first release; a 14.04 LTS release followed shortly. As of February 2015, Ubuntu...

It's Ubuntu MATE, pronounced "may-tay"

It's matté?
may tay? ewwww

330 more than Seth, I just caught up with you this week :D

@ByteCommander AGH
@ByteCommander you've been much more active here than I have though

@ByteCommander Nice job!

12:09 AM
seems so.

I'm a bit of a slacker answer wise.. Especially since I became a moderator :/

and it's a confirmation that I have no life... :-/

@Seth lol, well at least you seem to be moderating
@ByteCommander yep

i gotta sprint over to 20k

new piano guys video - brb

12:09 AM
Next month it will change anyway, starting to study.

@Zacharee1 yeah

@ByteCommander gasp
@Seth you said may-tey

@Zacharee1 I know. Couldn't remember exactly. Looked it up afterward. Didn't consider it big enough to correct.

It's a huge difference though
may-tey is just disgusting :p
mah-tey makes sense

12:11 AM
Earlier that day, I found out that SuSE Linux is pronounced "suu-zah"...

@ByteCommander and you're German....

so what?

SUSE is German
How'd you pronounce it?

Yeah.

Wow, didn't know Al had such a good voice.

12:12 AM
who?

@ByteCommander haha ikr. That one caught be by surprise too.

I just would have used other "words" to describe how to pronounce it.
I'd have described it as "soo-zeh".

new album too :D:D:D:D:D

> guday ma-tay

im going to be la-me and shop at targ-ay,

you want to call it that, then put an accent on the damn relevant letters, it just makes those that say it arrogant and wanting to be all hipster and shyt, i hate hipsters.

wait, pirates of the Caribbean?!?! Ahhhhhhh. Money down the drain...

12:14 AM
Maybe I'm just pronouncing the English syllables incorrectly though.

how
this chat likes tangents lol

> The company has been known to pronounce it as "zu-zuh".
@KazWolfe the tangents are when we talk about Ubuntu
we hate those
@ByteCommander so the German pronunciation should be "tsu-tsuh"

Also, AT&T/Comcast are at it again

I hate them.
And I use both of them.
I hate them even more.

i really want to get a small loan of $1,000,000 and set up an experimental ISP in my town.
one that actually, like, cares about their customers and provides actual internet without murdering everything.
imagine this... A home ISP that comes with an SLA.

12:19 AM
@KazWolfe Trump will be happy to give you that, provided that you're his son

GUYS

though, i think there's an untapped market in pay-as-you-go home internet.

Coldplay's latest album is just $0.99 on Google Play right now!

It'll end up so much cheaper for the average user.

considering that each song is $1.29 individually...

12:20 AM
@Seth THXNOTHX I HAVE SPOTIFY PREM

@Seth wanna buy it for me?

@KazWolfe Google Survey credit ftw

@Seth flagged as highly offensive.
They banned me from that for some dumb reason :(

impulse buys ftw lol

@Seth @KazWolfe hasn't been getting surveys so he's a little envious

12:20 AM
I totally did not open Google Play to buy a coldplay album...

@Seth Time to buy that Bugatti

I've never gotten a single survey.
Not a one. Nothing.

@Zacharee1 eh, with location based surveys turned off they are few and far between.
@KazWolfe What device?

Was an LG phone.

hm.

12:22 AM
location was definitely on, worked perfectly for someone else with the exact same setup.

on your internet?

Google just decided to up and ban me because lol

@KazWolfe you can move it to the bottom in 16.04

@Zacharee1 richie :P

@Mateo yeah, it took how many years to do that?

12:23 AM
@Seth :p
@KazWolfe only 6

that's six too many. It should have been a day-zero feature.

and you always had the choice of another desktop ;)

I reiterate:
18 mins ago, by Zacharee1
@KazWolfe The point of Linux may be to be able to do what you want with it, but that doesn't necessarily extend to software that runs on Linux (ahem AMD, NVIDIA, Oracle)

@Mateo And you have a choice between dial-up and Comcast.

@KazWolfe I have a choice among dial-up, DSL and Service Electric

12:25 AM
@Zacharee1 That rule falls apart when the software is written by the same guys that wrote the same core platform.

We may also be getting Xfinity here soon (yeah it's Comcast, but cheap)

especially if they push for "free software" that you can do whatever you want with

@KazWolfe Not really.
It's software, not the OS. The rules don't have to apply to the software
it's just that you have the power to choose whether or not you actually want that software
and you can change the launcher position; it's just not easy

and now I found a new, totally cool, acapella band. youtube.com/channel/UCTFuNYrqAcsmSjgqYMvxOqw

@KazWolfe Can I haz java question ?

12:40 AM
@Serg k

@KazWolfe what's the "package blah.blah.blah " line ? What does it do ?

it defines where the current java class is to the interpreter

isn't it like namespace in C#?

i think so?

So . . . that's has to be like an actual directory path ? So if I have package murach.games; , I have to make "/home/user/murach/games" and place my class there ?

12:43 AM
yep

Got it . . . finally . . .

awww "Chatty Chupacabras" is too long for a twitter handle :(
need new ideas.

huh, what's the max chars

15
ChattyCapybaras?
hah, Ubuntu skipped C. I wonder why lol.

12:59 AM
@Seth wow they are pretty cute. i can get on board with this

@Seth you should make a bot that posts to the star board if something goes over 6 stars

nah, that would have too many false positives.
lol if I "inspect element" and increase the character limit to 18 it says the username is already taken.

heh
> There are a lot of options. You can give a look here.

Keep in mind that in the link I sent you they mainly suggest how to set the path in the current session.

However if you change the path to the suggested values in ~/.profile or ~/.bashrc (depending which one you modified) you should be fine.
answer or no?

ah well. capybara it is.
stupid twitter.
ah shoot. I put my real name in assuming it wouldn't be displayed. it is. and I can't change it.

Hello everyone :)

1:06 AM
@Seth eksdee

you can definitely change your Twittre name, Mr. White.

The twitter account.
I was thinking start with this but modify it to be more chatt-y:

Octavian DamieanI wanted to keep it simple because I just prefer simplicity in design. 512x512 200x200 This is 48x48, 44x44 and 16x16 accordingly. 16x16 just to show you how a favicon would look like. 48x48 44x44 16x16 Additional material: Inkscape SVG source - 2048x2048 Plain SVG version - 2048x20...

1:11 AM
@KazWolfe good password. using it for my gmail brb

but I dunno.

^--- treehouse

@edwinksl Well, you should ask permission from Mr. White, aka @Seth first.

taking suggestions for a background photo too
@NathanOsman DSLR's are the bomb.

That was taken with my OnePlus 3.
Lol :D

1:15 AM
@NathanOsman got any conversations from this chat/site in your mind that would make a good twitter background?
@NathanOsman >.>

yay i am first follower

@edwinksl lol, just noticed xD

@Seth what exactly are you looking for?

I'm looking for a conversation that is silly/weird/funny that shows the culture of the room.

Like a screenshot of discussion?

1:16 AM
Or at least the culture 2 years ago ;P
@NathanOsman yeah. I was looking through the discussions.

Okay, well let me think.
^--- wooden houses on a log

I think I found a good one
@ChattyCapybaras, Stack Exchange HQ
0 tweets, 1 followers, following 0 users
thoughts?
I still need a profile picture

What's the account for?

It's like Stack Overheads, but for Ask Ubuntu.

Want me to write a bot that auto tweets anything with 8+ stars?
:D

1:19 AM
Pretty sure I've discussed it with you present before?

Nope.
Not that I remember.

@NathanOsman No, because that will catch PSAs and things that aren't funny..
It will have to be manual :/
do you approve of the background though?

Lemme look.

I like it (the background).

1:20 AM
@Seth do you have a link for that image source? I think it would look better dark themed :p

@Zacharee1 needs moar bacon

@Zacharee1 how is that more... chatt-y?

I thought maybe you'd like the star theme
cause it's star oriented

I'm not home but I'll try my hand at something when I am.

@Zacharee1 FOR THE MOTHERLAND
3

1:21 AM
wat

@KazWolfe I think this will be my first tweet.

oh god what have i done
i just managed to make a twitter account ;-;

@Seth how about this: a password protected site that periodically checks for starred messages that meet a certain criteria and displays them in a list. Users with accounts can log in and click a button to select which ones to tweet. That way multiple users can be permitted to tweet without sharing passwords.

@NathanOsman I was just about to suggest something like that

on an unrelated note, the bot is doing very well. @Seth, I actually would like feedback on what i can do to make it useful and not so fun that it detracts from chat.

1:24 AM
We do something similar for 2buntu.
@Seth say no more. I'm on it.

@Seth pluralization bug xD

@Zacharee1 FOR THE... BACONLAND?

You knew that was getting a star, didn't you...

YES @KazWolfe
wat @NathanOsman

1:25 AM
we need a "many memes of AU" metapost

@KazWolfe ooh lol

@NathanOsman Awesome! Also add a manual method though. Sometimes the good ones don't get starred.
The only other feature I was going to suggest is that is tweets one automatically every x time period.

so what you're saying is i need to reverse-engineer the algorithm for deciding what to post?

@Seth will do. I'll try to have it up and running in a day or two. I'm kinda sorta on a break right now and need a short project :)
@Seth like a queue?

@NathanOsman maybe you should.. break, on your break?

1:27 AM
FOR THE MOTHERLAND

@NathanOsman yeah

yay?

@Seth not that kind of break :P

@KazWolfe I considered just tweeting "Kaz." but decided I'd save that for another day >:P

Just bekaz.

1:28 AM
@Seth i'm... honored?
@NathanOsman spec for the thing:
if poster is named "Kaz Wolfe"
    message should be discarded

@Zacharee1 for lack of anything better I will use this for the time being.
I don't disapprove of the bacon.

@Seth do you have access to the Ask Ubuntu organization on GitHub?

lol

I'd like to stick the source code there if possible.

I'm making something else

1:30 AM
@NathanOsman no.. but I know how to bug both James and Marco.

I'll ask James.

I haven't been able to get ahold of James for a bit.
Lets see.. where did I put his phone number.

Q: Trying to dual boot Ubuntu on Early 2011 MacBook Pro and Ubuntu won't boot from USB, what can I do to troubleshoot booting?

Kristian KI've got as far as partitioning the drive with room for Ubuntu and its bootloader and making a bootable USB, but now I'm stuck. I have rEFInd installed and when I restart, it correctly picks up the bootable USB and I select it. It successfully loads the screen that queries me on if I just want to...

Long ass title good god

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice askubuntu.com/posts/827658/edit

1:34 AM
@Seth I sent him a message.
I chat with him often

same. except recently.
okay so I exaggerate. It's only been 7 days.
@NathanOsman cool. He might as well just add you then.

@edwinksl do you use HTTPS for AU?

@Zacharee1 yes for my bookmark. but the https goes back to http if i visit other sites through the dropdown menu, so i usually end up in http pretty quickly

@edwinksl have you tried the script using just HTTP? HTTPS isn't included

yeah just http

1:38 AM
hmm

i saw what your script did, so i did check to make sure i was on http

@Seth he's going to do it tomorrow.

@NathanOsman great
also y u no reply to my message :(
@NathanOsman gtalk

Just got it, hang on...

@Zacharee1 anyway it is ok, i don't need a dark theme and my chrome version is weird too

1:43 AM
no kidding

rip bacon?

well I can put that in....

so I was going through the starwall... @kaz

@ByteCommander we're near the pimple on the ass of the world.
I have a feeling you're going to hate this twitter account.

oh no
am i this account?

(I probably won't tweet that, fwiw)

1:47 AM
be proud of your memehood

@edwinksl at least i can actually be useful for things sometimes

I don't have stock in Docker but I'd be nervous about it right now if I did.
Docker Hub is not doing well

@Zacharee1 wat

well I have homework so I should really get back to that.

@edwinksl exactly

@Seth oh you haven't learned how to accidentally finish it like zach does?

I like how 2011 MacBooks are "old," but 2011 PCs are considered recent

@Zacharee1 i can't see the deleted answer :(
costly mistake by OP xD askubuntu.com/questions/824643/…

@edwinksl what's the mistake ? It shows x86_64 , so it's clearly not 32 bit
Oh, I see his answer . . .

yeah
in any case
i don't know how the kernel remained 32-bit when OP claimed he/she upgraded to 64-bit 16.04? what even happened?

Well, we'll find out that

confusing, at least to me

@edwinksl I suspect that he finally realised he had a 32bit install :)

2:32 AM
seems like it
chatting on mobile is difficult :/

@edwinksl and error-prone , too

And how did you figure out your kernel is 32 bit ? somehow i am not too certain this is all correct. Can you please tell us what dpkg --print-architecture ? Also, consider doing memory test from the boot menu ( you should see an option for that ) . It's not uncommon to have broken RAM due to static electricity when touching it — Serg 3 mins ago
@Serg ^ That'd be in direct conflict with OP's answer
if the chip were fried it'd still not show the full memory under 64bit
if I'm reading right, OP clean installed 64bit and then memory displayed as expected with full 32GB
based on their answer and comments
just saying :)

a wild Thomas appears!
:)

@ThomasWard If they nuked their system already and installed 64 bit, then sure - there won't be much we can figure out now, but before it would be useful to check with dpkg.

so in class today the professor said 32bit could only address 4GB and the class agreed. But no one mentioned PAE and when I mentioned it, didn't know what it was o_O

2:38 AM
@Seth Correcting the teacher has its own issues :)

@andrew.46 Thankfully I didn't say it loudly enough for the teacher to hear ;)

@Seth you should teach the class...

@edwinksl eh, I don't know everything.
or even nearly everything.
there's a reason I'm in the class ;)
Tho I got out of Linux 101 \o/

@Seth it's rare to have a professor who keeps up with newest tech. They have curriculum and stick to it.

@Serg PAE has been out for a long time :)
and they actually just updated the curriculum to keep up with the latest version of the A+ cert.

2:41 AM
Welp, then they didn't update it well enough

no argument there.

@Seth whatchu talking about i been here in the shadows since the dawn of oblivion and shall be here long after the End of Time

suraj mandalcellI recently installed elementary OS freya over my fedora24 installation. I decided to use my older .rpm packages to reinstall in elementary using alien package converter. I converted dpkg-1.17.25-8.fc25.x86_64.rpm to deb and tried to install after few secs it ended with an error. i forgot to copy ...

no seth
you broke the chain

I waited. No one else followed.

>>> while True:

@Seth That doesn't make me quite happy. Sure, the issue isn't related to OS differences, but . . . this sets bad example

@Serg if you edit I will reopen.
I'm too busy to remove all the elementary references.

2:54 AM
@Seth sounds like you need a bot to find them

Q: How to install snap on CentOS 7?

Enze ChiCan't find any document shows how to install snap on CentOS 7. There's no document for build from source either. Does anyone here have any experience on it?

I'm clocking out from work nau
see ya guys

@KazWolfe heh

actually, seth, that bot doesn't really spit out many posts
so far it's mostly false positives (wut), but it won't be a big post impact at all.
again, i actually want to cooperate with mods to make it useful

I really don't think that feature is terribly useful. at least not in this room.
