12:00 AM
@NathanOsman gimme your phone now

Had to take that one through a fence.

@NathanOsman you are good at photography!

Lol.

@NathanOsman that just adds to it

@NathanOsman what are we looking at?

12:01 AM
@Zacharee1 mr hates the OP3 :P

@Zacharee1 Have a lenovo, reflashed bios to get rid of crapware, and i have a headphone jack.
All good

The end of the dam.

@KazWolfe lol
@NathanOsman damn dams...

also... laptops with GPSes in them are so nice

@edwinksl this is a duplicate answer, with much less detail askubuntu.com/review/low-quality-posts/620219
look out for those
@KazWolfe Edward Snowden doesn't think so :p

12:03 AM
@Zacharee1 well, i can turn mine off completely.

@KazWolfe can you though

and physically remove the chip or the GPS antenna
so... i can.
in fact, it has a hardware killswitch.
i hit that thing and the chip doesn't even receive power :D

Ubuntu SUX for multitasking

:p @KazWolfe

gah I am copying and my browser will quit responding and I cant open a terminal

12:04 AM
@JamesTobin does better than iOS

@Zacharee1 fine, whatever

@Zacharee1 confirmed by multimeter

@Zacharee1 even my windows 8.1 does better than that

Better shot of downstream.

12:04 AM
@edwinksl I'm just alerting you to it

@JamesTobin this is why TTYs exist.

@KazWolfe someone's too serious

@NathanOsman great photo!

And alt+f2 xkill

:p
@NathanOsman starhog

12:05 AM
@Zacharee1 you're talking to the guy who puts a TTL port in every single router he buys.

Nathan and the Starhoggers
@KazWolfe fun...

eh, it's useful for when i brick them.

@KazWolfe wont it slow it down if I have 2 x sessions running at once?

Plug in my TTL -> USB and re-flash
@JamesTobin no...

@Zacharee1 it is annoying. people make small mistakes all the time and you don't have to point them all out unless it is actually a problem

12:06 AM
also, wow, the new local coffee shop is really good but really expensive.

@edwinksl I'm just trying to help you out. Sorry :(

@Zacharee1 Did I also mention that my hard drive bay is my CD slot and I have a quick-release mechanism on it?

O_O

@Zacharee1 i do know how to review things and i do click through to the question and check if i find a need to. i didn't do that on this occasion, that's it.

but yes. i do like my hardware killswitch for airplane mode.

12:09 AM
@KazWolfe wow.. I'd think so

instant faraday cage
@JamesTobin having multiple terminal sessons open won't do anything because the inactive ones will just sleep until you head back to them.
that is, unless you're running something

Wait until I get home and show you the good pictures :D

i'd still like something to wipe my TPM chip on the fly, but i dunno if that's possible.

@KazWolfe We have Paranoid Panda and then we have you, Burn-it-to-the-ground-upon-command Panda

well, that doesn't mean i'd ever use it.
but i do like instant burn-everything-to-ash.
speaking of burn-it-to-the-ground, can someone please kill NAT?
It's stupid, a waste of effort, and it's delaying IPv6.

12:15 AM
It still has a place.
Virtualization.

but really.
we should just push IPv6 globally. It's going to work.
Give a /32 to each ISP, and let them go wild.
That gives each ISP a total of 4,294,967,296 /64s. One for each customer, and we're golden.

That would at least eliminate the need for DSlite.

well. here goes nothing. I'm install the anniversary update.

DSlite?
@Seth wat

dual stack lite

12:21 AM
and provided there are a metric ton in 2000::/3...
I think we can even give each ISP TWO /32s

@KazWolfe and then just use IPv4 for local stuff? Makes sense

DSlite means my ISP shares the same IPv4 address on a load of clients.

cause then we could also open up the rest of IPv4 to LAN
@ByteCommander how

But each has their own IPv6 address.

No, use IPv6 for local too
@Zacharee1 NAT.

12:22 AM

@KazWolfe nooooooononononono

It's like ho wyour router works.

notice menu logo too

@Zacharee1 why not?

and...

12:23 AM
no local IPv6
They are impossible to remember

Yes pls local ipv6.
That's why there's something called hostnames @Zacharee1

@Seth oh i can finally download allo. HYPE

@JamesTobin flagged as offensive

12:23 AM
@edwinksl It's not great :(

@Zacharee1 counterflagged

@Zacharee1 it's xubuntu idiot

@Zacharee1 you got it too?

windows 3.1 theme ;D

@edwinksl downloaded from APKMirror

12:24 AM
@edwinksl :D

@JamesTobin wow OK
that one I might actually flag...

Yeah, give each ISP two /32 addresses. That's enough for one /64 for each person in the world.

shuddup @seth is right here moron

well then.

@Seth

12:24 AM
its xubuntu

and... deletion.
and kick.

@Zacharee1 heh. i was just stupidly waiting for it to appear on my google play

did he get the boot?

he got the boot.

@edwinksl the SMS is stupid (why can't it use my number, it's Google), apparently it doesn't even sync across devices if it's the same phone number, some other stuff

12:25 AM
But if ISPs actually tried, we'd probably get 99% IPv6 coverage by the end of 2017.

They released it today to keep the "coming summer 2016" but it's not finished as an app

what for?

Hell, I have my own /48. It's trivial to give ISPs a /32.

posting a picture of an xubuntu theme eh?

well, I'm off for tonight. seeya

12:26 AM
BIOS has 1052 votes now :P

@KazWolfe that'd be nice. I still like my IPv4 local addresses though. Hostnames are annoying and not always supported
@JamesTobin for calling me an idiot and a moron

@Zacharee1 6to4 translation is weird.

@insert_name_here it's still going?

yeah cuz you want to flag my xubuntu screenshots

But hostnames are pretty well supported on most modern systems.
Hence, why they exist :D

12:27 AM
no, doesn't look like it's still going
idk when bios got the extra vote

@JamesTobin even if it wasn't a joke (which it was, very obviously so I think) you don't call someone a moron
@KazWolfe I mean, let's just give ourselves the choice for IPv4/6 locally

I mean, I have very memorable IPv6 addresses, but my actual IPv6 subnet is tiny and easy to remember lol.
Even so, I just use hostnames

didnt know people were extra touchy here. sry

it takes two to tango. If this dance is still happening when I come back I won't be very happy. Zach maybe use more smilies in your joke. James you have 0 excuses for calling people names. Ever.

But if I want to actually create the hostname for my router (for example), I have to find the IPv6 address

12:28 AM
No.

hostnames literally never work for me

Your router can handle all that with intelligent DNS

@KazWolfe how do I connect to my router in the first place?

@Zacharee1 same way as always

but if I don't have IPv4....

12:29 AM
Your router makes note of the hostname you're connecting from, and places it in your local DNS

@Zacharee1 i only have one device... oops

Ugh. I just realized I don't have completely up to date backups. To YOLO install Windows update or not..

@edwinksl it's more annoying if you switch devices, as in upgrade

so for example, my hostname is WolfStorm and my IPv4 is 30.112.91.55 My IPv6 is <really long thing>

@Zacharee1 right, which i might actually do soonish. good point

12:30 AM
@KazWolfe but how do I connect to the router INTERFACE in the first place?

I can connect to my device over IPv4 or 6 with WolfStorm.home.me
@Zacharee1 for me it's router.home.me

@edwinksl the point is, they need to finish it. I love the idea, but the lead dev is apparently not great

Ugh. Hostnames.

or i just use [2001:db8::1]

Default hostnames make literally no sense on Cisco routers and home printers

12:31 AM
If you keep IPv4/IPv6 locally, you can use DS and hostnames, or fall back to IPv4 if you don't want to use hostnames.

I WANT TO FALL BACK TO IPV4!! :p

I think I might finally switch away from unity.

That's what I've been saying!

That, and you can manually force hostnames with your DHCP server.

I'm tired of dealing with compiz glitches.

12:32 AM
Still, hostnames are the right way to go in this case...

@KazWolfe look at this fricking hostname for my router router06da81

@Zacharee1 that's why you change it lol

@Serg GNOME 3 FTW
@KazWolfe but how am I to change it if I can't remember the IPv6 address string because it's so long?

@Zacharee1 eww, gnome3.

LXDE FTW :P

12:33 AM
@Seth Gedit as an IDE FTW

@Zacharee1 The router doesn't have a long IPv6 string.
And you just copy/paste from the Gateway field :P

@KazWolfe my router isn't my DHCP server

Your router is typically going to be at ::1 on your local IPv6 subnet.

I'm thinking Kubuntu and then install i3 or something.

@Zacharee1 lel did you just ping serg

12:34 AM
still, you can use the gateway field to get the router IPv6

@Seth do XFCE. It's nice
@edwinksl lolwuthowdididothat
@KazWolfe I'm not so sure that my router is my gateway (directly)

I confuse them too :P

my network is weird

what is your network
some weird hybrid enterprise thing?

@KazWolfe it's a DSL connection + Cable connection into a Cisco Enterprise router. The DHCP server is a Server 2008 machine, the DNS server is the same. idk if there's anything in between the router and the rest of the network. The router has a static IP, the DHCP/DNS server has a static IP. Random machines in the house (like my MC server) have static IPs

12:36 AM
either way, this is a solvable issue, as your local router will typically be assigned ::1 in your /64
@Zacharee1 why the hell do you have that setup.

Ask my dad
To be fair, we've gone through like 5 routers before finally getting a load splitter

what the hell are you doing on your connection?!

We have a surprisingly large home network
I think we're close to filling our 254.x subnet

i still think you can run all of it on a single soho router.

Probably

12:38 AM
WHY DO YOU HAVE TWO HUNDRED SOMETHING DEVICES ;-;

but Ciscos are a nightmare to configure, since there are no docs
@KazWolfe lolz. Don't ask me
Actually, lemme run an IP scan thru VPN

I worked at a damn school that didn't have 200 devices.
at worst we never broke more than 100 devices on a /24, full load.

idk
It might have gone down
I think we did some cleaning
We also have 3 WAPs so...
Stone walls

@KazWolfe why do I get this?
gah

@JamesTobin why do you get what
@Zacharee1 ...

12:40 AM
james@james-hp:~/Desktop/qb64$ ./setup_lnx.sh
bash: ./setup_lnx.sh: /bin/bash^M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory
@KazWolfe forgot you cant use ctrl+c to copy from terminal

@JamesTobin use nano and re-write the #! line to just say: #!/bin/bash. Erase what it currently has.

@KazWolfe OK, 34. We've done cleanup. But these are only permanent devices. I have 3 I bring with me, my sister has three, my dad has a few more

I feel like your network is overly complicated and is way too more than what you need.

@KazWolfe I do want to redo it

34 PERMANENT DEVICES?!

12:41 AM
@KazWolfe that is what it already says

Is every appliance in your house wifi enabled?

We have LAN

Erase and replace anyways.

#!/bin/bash

We have three WAPs because there's a stone wall between a few rooms because of extensions done to the original building

12:42 AM
@KazWolfe doesn't solve the problem

one of the WAPs doesn't work well, so we need one to replace it

okay, that leaves 31.

@Zacharee1 true enough.

@KazWolfe lemme try to list them..

also, are you assigning static IPs on the DHCP side or the machine side?

12:43 AM
@KazWolfe both for the ones we need
we reserve the addresses and then assign them on the machine

@Zacharee1 Just do it on the server side for the MAC.
It's more efficient and more reliable.

@KazWolfe we have machines that replace the originals sometimes that need to be on the same IPs

xterm same error @KazWolfe

Then, change the MAC.

@KazWolfe ?

12:44 AM
@JamesTobin Erase the entire line and type it in.

@KazWolfe I DID

You completely removed the line, and the line after it?

not the line after it

I assume your script looks like this:
#!/bin/bash

do_something

I have used this script on other distros
@KazWolfe no there is no MT line between
MT = empty :D

12:45 AM
@KazWolfe I think just excluding the IP from DHCP is enough and much easier

#!/bin/bash
#QB64 Installer -- Shell Script -- Matt Kilgore 2013
#Version 4 -- April 4, 2013
#Compiles:
# GL : .978
# SDL: .954

@Zacharee1 trust me, it's actually more reliable to assign by DHCP

@KazWolfe should I insert a new MT line?

Yeah, add one. See what happens.

gah
@KazWolfe same error

12:46 AM
do this:
dos2unix <script name>
18
Q: What is the ^M character called?

MasiTexPad is creating it. I know that it is under some deadkey. I just cannot remember it is name. The blue character: I just want to mass remove them from my document. How can you type it?

installing...

@Zacharee1 It may seem counter-intuitive, but the reason for DHCP-side assignment is because you never have to guess if an IP is reserved or not. I mean, sure, you could scan the network or consult a notebook, but having it centrally is better.
Plus, if you ever want to change your subnet/whatever, you can push the changes right from the DHCP server without having to reconfigure devices manually.

@KazWolfe we also have a DHCP range and then a static range

And, it's fully cross-platform, so if your MAC is in the DHCP list, the same IP will be given no matter what OS you run.

@KazWolfe the perl -p -i -e "s/\r//g" command in that topic worked :)

12:49 AM
Static assignment on the DHCP server is better just because you get to control it from a single centralized place, which is much better in enterprise environments where it's too much work to actually manually go to every machine.
Sure, in a home network it doesn't matter, but on a real network, it's indispensable. Best-practice, if you will.

@KazWolfe not everything has static
only a few

And, you can assign IPs to things that don't support static IP (hullo, roku)

my Roku does static

mine doesn't.
Either way, it's still best-practice to assign static IPs from the DHCP side.
i mean, YMMV, but I find that having this centralized location for management is so helpful.

gah now it is causing a similar ^M error from inside the .sh file
dumb xubuntu :(

12:52 AM
that's not xubuntu
that's script encoding.

the script works on other distros
official qb64 installer

it's definitely better (for me at least) to change IPs from a central location than it is to go around to every device and change static routes.

OK, so here goes:

4KServer - Windows 2008 server in shop building for a data center
5KServer - The DHCP/DNS server (these may be backwards)
shopcam - a camera in the shop building to record the CNC machine
Rostock - the 3D printer controller
NAS11 - A backup drive
JETDIRECT - Printer
WF-7510 - another printer
HP9500 - another printer
switchc543eb - some Cisco smart switch
ZMSI - moi
USIS-HP-ASBURY - a work computer in need of repair
kindle - sister's Kindle
192.168.254.118 - something from Sony, idk

what the hell.
that is... excessive at best.
gimme $40/hr and travel costs and I'll come out and redo that right for you lol

lol
You have to use Windows Server 2008 though

12:55 AM
i can do that

which was obtained ahem legally ahem

first off, that is way too many switches. Second, switches should be placed on a management network not in your main subnet.
You have a Cisco router. Use VLAN tagging.

Actually, no, that was the Server 2003 machines which both committed suicide
2008 was fine
@KazWolfe We have two buildings, a 19th century house and stone walls. We need these switches

no you don't.
not that many.

We have 3 definite switches

12:57 AM
sure, one or two maybe, but not that many. At all. I'd assume you have CAT wiring somewhere, so just put them all to a central switch somewhere.
And for the love of god use VLANs.

VLANs? Why

Switches go on their own management/backbone network.
Devices go on their own real network.

This is a home network
we don't want to separate stuff
@KazWolfe here's why we have the switches. The office has LAN. There's one line running from the office to my room and one running to my dad's. There are two lines running to the shop for 2Gb connection.
oops

You still should separate switches on a home network.
Again, best-practice.

and I will continue, but running out of edit time
