3:00 AM
that's why i want feedback for useful features! :P

things that would be useful might be a way to quickly recall canonical questions.
i.e. !!/blackscreen returns the blackscreen question.

i only know what I want in a bot, not everyone else, and they're the important ones.

@KazWolfe look at ubottu in IRC for some more ideas.

I can implement something like that, though, if you want to be able to set certain questions to triggerwords

3:01 AM
Like !!/q blackscreen

yeah, that might be useful.

that would probably be pretty easy to implement, so brb doing it

and with that I'm signing off. good night folks.
(8 AM classes are a pain)

:p

hi
how to make my ubuntu clean like as i installed at first?

lol, wrong Serg

unfortunately SO isn't super friendly

3:45 AM
AU is really the only friendly site I've come across...
i've tried to return the favor...

i think the bar for a good SO question is quite high, and that comes as a surprise to the lazy questioners
of course the question is crystal-clear in their heads but when written down in text, the question is a steaming pile of crap

well... i should probably sprint to 20k

4:04 AM
godwin's law, lel

@Zanna Afternoon :)

hey

o/

good gfortran answer :D

I pride myself on posting good answers.
or, i try to post them at least.

i still think telegram is better

I registered a long time ago and it's still unavailable.
They must be rolling it out in segments.
Also, I have 940 hours of uptime on my phone now.
That's over one month.

@andrew.46 afternoon, I'm not here, taking the day off, I was just responding to this very nice comment askubuntu.com/questions/826862/… but I see @Anwar is here and he's supposed to be taking a day off too

4:32 AM
Still doesn't hold a candle to my server though.
nathan@sf:~$ uptime
 00:32:13 up 630 days,  5:35,  3 users,  load average: 0.07, 0.03, 0.05

@NathanOsman update ur kernel

Shhh!
I think I get a prize for 2 years of uptime.
:D
And no, this server isn't hosting any user data. It's basically a file server and game server.
Nothing important much on it.

4:48 AM
evening!

@NathanOsman giff ip and someone here will make sure it goes down :)

@edwinksl 127.33.186.21

Afternoon @IanC

@edwinksl the address is 127.0.0.1
Have at it :D

@NathanOsman Bad Nathan! Bad!
You don't make it obvious!

4:53 AM
@andrew.46 well, it's afternoon somewhere :p

@KazWolfe Gotcha. Wink.
Ahem.
This is the hostname for the server: kittens.vcap.me
Or if you are so inclined, bacon.vcap.me.

@edwinksl saw that. funny: BSOD ---> in ubuntu .--------> black screen of death
lol

heh

5:11 AM
@terdon I'd like to move it, move it, to U&L, U&L : askubuntu.com/q/827690/295286

Q: Linux on cb3-111 (Acer Chromebook)

DilanSo I've been trying to boot/dual boot my Chromebook into Linux and nothing works! I have seen so may different videos on it and followed so many different web tutorials, but nothing seems to work! I have tried and successfully run ubuntu and Xfce through the Chromebook terminal ie: https://www.li...

gah I hate acer chromebooks

@edwinksl standard is high, but percentage of elitist users is also high. AU has many more users that will chew down the step by step answer for the user, and don't expect everyone to be a pro at any programming language already
@JamesTobin why so ?

no BIOS
no CMOS setup

meh, are these something your average joe cares about ? nope.
hence they're simple and usable

5:16 AM
Chrome OS though.... GAH if they were locked down with a better OS maybe but Chrome OS sucks bad!

eh, minimalism
There's always an option to install Ubuntu tho

not EZ tho
too locked down]

I've installed it, so if i figured it out, then I'd say it's average difficulty

well see if you can get that question solved then lol

OP already figured it out. You have to remove a write-protect screw, then it will install

5:32 AM
write-protect... screw?

yup, chromebooks literally have a screw inside motherboard. You remove it, and then you can write to disk. Of course you need to put it into developer mode first. So there's hardware lock ( although not very good one ) and software lock
Originally, i installed Ubuntu on the Chromebook i bought for my mom
but then went back to Chrome OS, because simplicity

i heard of write protect jumpers but not screws

trying remix os on my hp

well . . . .if you unscrew that screw you can screw with chromebooks however much you like

6:26 AM
@Serg How do they do updates?

@NathanOsman good question. I'd assume the root account can do that

@Serg So why the need to remove the screw then? Can't you just gain root?
...and then write to the disk?

@NathanOsman Hmmm, at least according to this: reddit.com/r/GalliumOS/comments/4agl8f/… The write protect screw removal is necessary if you want to have custom bios.
OS installation itself only requires developer mode
Meh, I still removed it on mine before installing Ubuntu . . . Doesn't hurt

it could be a signing enforcement screw?
like, you remove the screw and the BIOS disables signature stuff?

wouldn't know - I don't play with BIOS that much

6:37 AM
just guesses rn

@Seth I started with Xenix :=D 1st Linux was Suse 4.6 and then Ubuntu.

I wanna get one one of them Chromebooks for myself. Really didn't have any money , but now that I'm back no the job, i hope i'll save up lil'somthin'

oh @NathanOsman, I'm so happy right now.

The other one belongs to my father now, so no installation of any Linux there

Costco sells six-packs of real maple syrup rn

6:39 AM
I'll have to try maple syrup at some point. Never tried it

@Rinzwind wow old school

@KazWolfe lol.

@KazWolfe i went wtf on my first ever trip to costco
it is rather wtf to people who has never seen SO MUCH STUFF in a single place

chromebooks are cool for maybe screwing around, but it can't really be a real fulltime PC... (Even with Linux)
i'd rather just get a crapton of Pis and do weird stuff with them.

@edwinksl wait until you visit IKEA or a Walmart supercenter :P

6:42 AM
or a costco in LA.
Thing's bigger than your average datacenter.

you guys know where to find me during a zombie apocalypse

I used raspberry for interfacing with a microcontroller dev board. Wanna get back to that project at some point, cuz i haven't touched it since
@edwinksl no, move to Canada
seriously

@edwinksl yeah! the best part is zombies can't get in without a membership card!

@KazWolfe lel true
@Serg good point actually

Mat Pat over at Game Theorist channel did research on the best place to stay during zombie apocalypse and it tuened out to be Canada, specifically the lake area

6:44 AM
(goal zero is a badass company actually. shame their crap is so expensive :()

@edwinksl I also had to use TOS before Xenix. Thoroughbred Operating System (interpreter for BASIC)

actually you want a really safe place?
Any colo datacenter. I'm not joking.
Or, hell, any datacenter, period.

I know you're not kidding.
Those are very well guarded places.

if it's a big company like OVH, those things are gonna be impenetrable and so much backup power...

6:47 AM
Well, you can't grow crops in data center, can you ?

Well, and a nuclear power plant.

Then... prison?

Those are well guarded and loaded with auxiliary power.

@NathanOsman Ehh, too unstable. Well-guarded, yeah, but if you don't maintain a plant, problems happen.

Mars. in theory you can grow food there

6:48 AM
99% of the time I bet nothing happens.

potatos for daya
potatos for days

Anything overheats and the reactor will SCRAM.

that is true.
you could just probably force a scram the second you get there.
And actually, you're gonna have a lot of water.
And if you have anyone smart with you, your nuke doubles as a desal plant.

As long as the pumps keep working during cooldown, you're okay.

typical night choice: homework or sleep ?

6:50 AM
Bonus points for luring the zombies into the cooling pool.
@Serg sleep... and then get up early.

get up early isn't optional - I've class at 8 am, get up at like 5:30

so, we have:

- Datacenter (good for everyone, but no crop space)
- Prison (hard to navigate, maintain, plenty of crop space though)
- Nuclear plant (Great if you have a smart person, lots of protection, water..., but *very* rare)
- Canada (Upside: Cold, Downside: Cold)

And Canada
Add it to the list

Cheyenne mountain?

What about food supplies in the mountains ?

6:52 AM
fun fact. i live no more than 30 miles from a nuclear plant.

Cool.

and a datacenter.
and a prison.

Three Mile Island?
:P

california
and the plant is getting decomissioned soon, so...

Cali-fo-nya, knows how to parteh

6:53 AM
no worries about SCRAMing...

All our electricity is hydroelectric.
But we do have datacenters.

prisons?

I'm not sure.
I'm not aware of any nearby.
But then again, I've never had a need to look :P

or a missile silo.

not sure if we have time to get to canada though

6:56 AM
that's another good place.

Nah, nothing that cool.

you can drop by my backyard nuclear plant.

@edwinksl Yeah, that wall you guys are building... might be a problem...

but that isn't for canada!

not to the north though...
and even so... WE HAVE TUNNELS LOL
actually i know a couple nuclear engineers over at the local plant. i can always talk them into staying there if there's a zombie outbreak.
nuclear engineers = free power

6:59 AM
what are the odds of US nuking itself in the event of a zombie apocalypse

We actually had someone dig a tunnel under our border and it went undetected for about 8 months.
I know you guys have lots of tunnels on your southern border.
But one up north here is unheard of.

hmmm.
another benefit to nuclear plants.
cooling towers. they generate steam
steam indicates life to not-stupid people.

@KazWolfe as we learn in the walking dead, the most dangerous thing is other humans
might not want to attract too much attention from other humans

again, nuclear plant.
you can advertise yourselves at a nuclear plant because nothing can get in without you letting it in

power is covered but i am not sure about food and water

7:04 AM
@KazWolfe nuclear plants might not be a good idea , since if it's really a zombie appocalypse, people be bitten and be dead there, and there will be ain't no-one to run them power plants,ergo they will go kaboom.
Also, what ed said

@Serg nuclear plants have so many failsafes that it isn't even funny.

I'm not too sure how failsafe are those failsafes , plus radiation, bro

unless a lot of catastrophes, they're gonna shut down relatively cleanly.

@Serg if i am not wrong, nuclear plants are basically automated and human intervention is only required in extreme circumstances
and tons of failsafes like kaz said

@Serg fun fact: I've visited my local nuclear plant. Apparently some of the engineers lean right on the core wall. No side effects.

7:05 AM
Anybody have suggestion for cool techy wallpapers ? If it's server racks , that's even better

@edwinksl Water isn't a problem, actually.
a nuclear plant means water is relatively nearby because cooling.
You can safely drink the reactor discharge steam, it's actually probably safer than the water going in
by proxy, food isn't an issue. You have a decent amount of water so you can just get crops in.
Plants typically have a decent amount of open space outside.
one year at a nuclear plant is no more radioactive than eating 2500 bananas in that same year, @Serg (i mean, unless you go for swims in the reactor bay)
tl;dr nuclear plants are the ultimate anti-zombie location, ever.

still wouldn't wanna, zen-Q very mush

plus, those places are heavily armed.
@Serg fine, you can go get eaten then.

@KazWolfe ...and they always have plenty of robotics inside.

so what nuke plants are we shortlisting here

@NathanOsman error 404 : OOPSbuntu , page not found

@edwinksl anything near a lake or ocean.
and the NSA is now watching this chat very closely.

@Serg This, maybe?
:D

that is in my wallpaper rotation

7:16 AM
(It's late and I can't brain at the moment.)

@KazWolfe surely they are also interested in figuring out how to survive a zombie apocalypse that i consider imminent

@edwinksl do you have the zombie serum or something?

no

That could work. AskUbuntu is is all about orange though . . . well, orange and white to be precise

Hello, people!

Amal S. KuriakoseI've installed Lubuntu today and noticed that the performance of it on my computer even after that distro being so lightweight is a bit heavy on my system. There's joke somewhere there about LUBEbuntu . . . .

@Serg and you made it.
damnit now i want to see a lubuntu remix.
> I would not advise using an authorised key unless you are very careful in the keeping of that key
wat.

"you shouldnt use security unless you secure that security"
yup, totally makez zens

7:27 AM

full comment:
It's not really security through obscurity if you need to use alternative ports as security is not your constraint, the resource (port number) is. I would advise the use of denyhosts or fail2ban. I would not advise using an authorised key unless you are very careful in the keeping of that key, don't leave it on a school computer. I always have a honeypot on 22 for the bots to find anyway and limit the windows these ports are open. — mckenzm 3 hours ago

Q: How to find duplicate photos that fetched from photo gallery in IOS objective c?

Harry Saggui am working on cleaner app. I am fetching photos from photo galley and want to find duplicate images. any help ?

user is banned from SO from the looks of it D:

8:01 AM
@Rinzwind yeah, oh well, too bad for OP i guess

getting question-banned on any SE site is hard deliberate work.

sure is
I assume a Q like ^^^ is locked on SO for a lack of showing effort?
And that can get you banned quickly _O-
ask 10 of those rapidly ... :P

given what i see in SO, it will be downvoted to -10 before it even gets closed :p

Putting so much effort into lack of effort seems counter-intuitive ;)

not to mention an extremely popular tag like objective c

8:04 AM
true D: D:
pity we can't test it @edwinksl

@Rinzwind you can spectate the new questions queue for a popular tag and watch the show :D
i see that sometimes for say python and java
and wow, when it rains, it pours

title: "how can I fix this errror"
body: "This is a system test on downvoting. please downvote this".
and then wait for it to get closed :+)

risky test

not really
the hard part is finding a n00b to post it >:-D

8:08 AM
Technically , development on Ubuntu is on-topic here

@Serg not for IOS

@Rinzwind yup, but he didn't say he's developing for iOS, did he ?

@edwinksl and impossible too. Even a linepart has infinite points.
@Serg "How to find duplicate photos that fetched from photo gallery in IOS objective c?" He didn't?

i interpreted the question as being about writing an iOS app in Objective C

me too(?) was I wrong?

8:10 AM
Aha, I see.

@Serg ooooooh now we demand an apology >:-D
@edwinksl "All path to show different- different colors." there are not enough colors in the world for this _O-

@Rinzwind apology for what ? doing my part of being AU community member ? >:) I don't usually apologize . . .
( jokes of course )
My dog is semi-barking in her sleep, so adorablu :3

@Serg for assuming me and @edwinksl where wrong :=D

@Rinzwind heh, although probably paths in google maps are specifically roads, so there is a finite (but still very large) number of paths between two points :D

@Rinzwind You assumed I assumed that you and @edwinksl assumed what you didn't assume, but in reality , I assumed something else

8:14 AM
We will take that as an apology @Serg >:-D

无语...

speechless? >:-D

that steam question is very confusing ._.

sure is :P

@Rinzwind yeah it does now, but i don't think there is a super easy solution...

there is! I posted it >:)
@Muru but I hate wine >:)
heheheh +2 on that >:)

now OP has to figure out how to install/use virtualbox :p

@Rinzwind :D
That's the setup I use though. Campus network restrictions force me to use Tor for signing in, but I can use iptables to get Steam to download stuff using my the regular campus network, which is fast. Things I can't do on Windows.
And it's one more data point for the Steam people to pick up on (the hardware survey always picks up on the fact that I'm using Wine)

added :=)
oh but you play from wine too? he wants to copy it over to windows :P
@muru there I mentioned your name :=D

8:49 AM
Sigh. Down the rabbit hole goes that user

sure is

@edwinksl that's illegal in Holland and probably the whole of the EU.
Australia: illegal too
oh man. 1 dude in there made a blogpost on it and posted in the thread...
His server died from the load _O-
"Nope. You can turn Secure Boot off on the Lenovo Yoga models that this affects.

They have the SSD in some strange "RAID" mode where Linux can't see or be installed to it, and neither can Windows unless you add some drivers to your Windows installer media. They removed AHCI mode from the BIOS. Then they wrote additional code so if you try to toggle it to AHCI mode with an EFI variable from EFIshell, it immediately sets itself back to RAID.

For the last 11 months, they were silent on why this machine was configured this way. The only reason we know why now is because Lenovo answered my Bes

Q: Remix OS running in Virtual Box under Ubuntu, how to share files?

FiksdalI have a Remix OS virtual machine. The host is Ubuntu. How can I share files between the guest and the host? The best thing would be to have a shared folder if it's possible. I am currently using AirDroid, but it's quite slow, and it's not really a shared folder it's more like sending files. I...

@Rinzwind yeah i can't see how this is legal anywhere

@edwinksl in Mexixo someone started a lawsuit :=)

10:43 AM
Sigh . . . A guy tells me that my answer will fail at trailing or leading whitespace , while his answer fails in the exactly same case.
Oh, the irony

@Serg heh, where?

trailing whitespace wasn't even required
Also . . .I'm pissed because i failed to fall asleep
i have exam today in afternoon
Actually . . . it won't fail . . .if there's leading whitespace. Because strip() function removes it

@Serg No it doesn't. Cuonglm's answer doesn't make any assumptions about what the first and last characters are. It will also work for lines whose first and last characters are spaces. Yours will fail since those are removed by the strip(). That's the point he's making.
Also, syntax error:
$ python -c 'import sys; print "\n".join([l.strip() for l in sys.stdin if len(l)>1 and l.strip()[0]==l.strip()[-1]])' < file
  File "<string>", line 1
    import sys; print "\n".join([l.strip() for l in sys.stdin if len(l)>1 and l.strip()[0]==l.strip()[-1]])
                         ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
Ah, python2

11:02 AM
Ah, so I misunderstood the guy aparently

@Serg English isn't his native language.

Neither is mine
His first comment was ' 121'

Yes, but you live in the US and use it every day. Your English is far better than his.
@Serg Yeah, I saw that now. Bad example.
And, of course, here comes POSIXman with the best solution:
1
A: grep command to display all lines that begins and ends with same character

Stéphane Chazelasgrep -xe '\(.\).*\1' -e . Example: $ printf '%s\n' il y était cet été | grep -xe '\(.\).*\1' -e . y été -x is for exact match (match on the whole line). \1 being a back-reference to the character captured in \(.\). We add a -e . to take care of the special case of a line containing on singl...

lol posixman

11:17 AM
@terdon ehm being american does not make his english better than a non-american >:-D

@Rinzwind ? Speaking a language every day makes you better at it. Nationality has nothing to do with anything.

@terdon made an edit, now it should work with any char
I didn't know strip() removes whitespaces, I thought it only removes newlines
welp, now i do that explicitly

Yep, cool

Learning something out of each answer

@terdon americans don't speak english :=)

11:27 AM
Yeah, they speak American English
Also, they speak slang

@Rinzwind At least they speak a better approximation of it than the English.

there is only 1 english. and that's the one the queen speaks >:)
and we can start a war over it. throw some tea in a harbour. light up some houses.
if you want

I haven't slept whole night and have exam this afternoon. I've no energy for that, bro

@Rinzwind I'd rather not argue with bigotry :P

:D
I dont discriminate on gender or race >:-D
everyone is equal to me.

11:33 AM
@terdon is there a way to ban someone from site for like, weeks and weeks ? Cuz I need to get some sleep man . . . and homework . . .

@Serg change your password to a random string of chars and log out? :P

@Rinzwind i wish it was easy as [ site.logout() for site in serg.sites() ]
i might have a heart attack today because I'll be over caffeinated

@Serg Sure. How long do you want to be banned for?

oh lord . . . till December probably. . . . .
maybe January

@Serg Be careful what you ask for. As a respected member in good standing, I am inclined to grant your request. That would mean suspending your account for a few months. Do you really, really want that?

11:42 AM
@terdon not yet, I'll need to think. if this continues then sure

@Serg Dude. Just stop spending so much time here.
I can kick you out of chat if you like.

@terdon You can't kick me out of youtube though :)
I'll just leave and try to stay off for a while.
I don't know how well it's going to work out
