@JourneymanGeek yes I agree it is not appropriate, I will refrain

@JourneymanGeek good thing we don't speak much in Tamil. :D

I was writing an answer but steeldriver answered it with a comment hehehe

@Zanna link me up in the other room so we can take care of them rightaway

Wow! This is sooo coool. I love the way they teach things here , checkout gitreal.codeschool.com/levels/1

Hello ! :)

1:11 PM
@cl-netbox Hi :D

@SeverusTux Hi !:) Something new from the water dispute ?

@jokerdino OK... seems it is already getting me into trouble

Everything is back to normal (not completely).

Yes, writing comments.

@SeverusTux I am glad to hear this ! :)

1:13 PM
And I have exams tomorrow :( .

@SeverusTux You will succeed with 100 out of 100 ... I am sure about that ! :)

hahaha..
Thanks :)

you will be fine @SeverusTux ^_^
what are your exams in?

@SeverusTux Nevertheless : good luck ! :)

OperatingSystems (morning) , Database Management Systems (afternoon)

1:16 PM
Hi @jokerdino @Zanna ! :)

hi

Hello :)

want to install ubuntu which version is stable
i already have version 14

16.04

@SeverusTux arch or ubuntu ? ... or windows ? :D

1:17 PM
the exact is #define DISKNAME Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS "Trusty Tahr" - Beta amd64

@cl-netbox hiya

@cl-netbox Windows ?? Never

@Sandro Hi ! :) The latest stable edition is 16.04 LTS ! :)

ok

1:26 PM
@cl-netbox hi how you doing?

@Zanna I'm fine ! I was busy exploring how LXD system containers are working in ubuntu - they are blazingly fast ! What about you ? How are you doing ? :)

@cl-netbox I'm doing good thanks ^_^

@Zanna Nice to read this ! :)

Why are LXD containers so fast?

Are they fast in comparison to other VMs, or in comparison to a regular Ubuntu installation?

1:39 PM
@Zanna No idea ... but Canonical has done a brilliant job providing us with this (kinda) virtualization solution ! Here you can find some general information -> ubuntu.com/cloud/lxd ... and here is a lot of comprehensive documentation -> insights.ubuntu.com/2016/03/14/the-lxd-2-0-story-prologue

oh thanks :)

@Zanna Guess what ? boot time : 1 (ONE) second !!! :)

whoosh!

lxd is just repackaging lxc
so... you're running off the same kernel, and most hardware isn't virtualised
So, lower overhead, stuff like memory is shared very efficiently

@Zanna For a quick test : lxc init ubuntu:16.04/amd64 <your-container-name> | lxc start <your-container-name> | lxc exec <your-container-name> bash | apt update | apt upgrade | reboot ... now look at your watch ... after 1 second execute lxc exec <your-container-name> bash again - et voilá ... ! :)

1:48 PM
You're limited to linuxes...
but that's fine for this crowd ;)

@JourneymanGeek hahaha ... Hi ! :)

Another thing is in some cases container based virtualsation is badly done, so security is a bit naff
lxd is "ok" I think

@JourneymanGeek limited ? you mean NOT limited to Windows ? :D :D :D

Hi @Anwar

Hello @Anwar ! :)

1:50 PM
hi :)

@cl-netbox there's other FOSS oses ;p
I think in the hierachy of virtualisation...

@JourneymanGeek yeah ... I know ... :D
@JourneymanGeek Well, I think KVM is one of the best solutions. :)

docker's aimed at processes and services , though you could use it to package and deploy a set of them. lxc is 'lower level' - its nice for seperating roles, and maybe servers. VMware and virtualbox are for running whole OSes on workstations when they're dissimilar. Its even lower
KVM is in a wierd place. Its a proper hypervisor, ala hyper-v and esx but it runs alongside a full blown OS
oh and xen and.. that other one
but I'm not super familiar with them

Citrix?

@JourneymanGeek qemu / libvirt are out-performing those well know solutions like vbox ... so I switched completely ... until now I don't look back or miss anything.

1:55 PM
@cl-netbox also runs on very little.
I've been toying with rebuilding my setup around ovirt

@JourneymanGeek Hey nice ! :)

but it makes a lot of sense to rebuild my whole setup first

@JourneymanGeek That indeed is true ... :)

(Backups, new home server, test taking down the web server dedi, data backups...)
to make it more complicated I run both mysql and postgres ._.

2:09 PM
@JourneymanGeek oh, yes, there's some work to do then ... can't you run postgresql just as a single server or do you need mysql for a special application ?

@cl-netbox mysql for wordpress, postgres for ttrss
postgres is a LOT easier to backup and restore. Has a very sane command for it

2:24 PM
too quick!

3:08 PM
hi
is there anybody

sort of here

:D
i want to install xampp-linux64
donwloaded the file
and now when run the .run file
it's gives me an error which says
need root access

run with sudo

it's on my ntfs disk
how to target it
in windows i used

what's the path?

3:11 PM

new volume!
sorry

haha it's in /media I guess

program
it's program
in windows it was drive G i gusss

idk... are you talking about in the file browser?

yes
i compeletely know to ubuntu
want to start to learn
it

copy the path using gparted

3:15 PM
so in the file browser, what else do you see in the directory with it?

i think u don't get what i mean, i want to run a file on my disk

you should be able to right click on the file, btw, and select "open as administrator" or something like that

usjng sudo

I know, I'm trying to work out the path to it so I can tell you what to type in the terminal
but in the GUI you can right click on the program and select to open with elevated privileges
I never use the file browser myself, and I'm using MATE, so mine is maybe a bit different

find an easy ways
he he
right click on the folder and choose open in terminal lol
and this is the path
:/media/computer/program/Ubuntu software$

3:20 PM
what's the fille name?
now you can just do sudo ./filename

great thanks
now im in installing process

@Zanna You know you're not getting rep right? ;)
Karma rep maybe!

@Arronical lol I'm getting the real rep :)
@Sandro :)

@Zanna u are amazing
5

@Zanna I'm just cranky because I'm writing documents, it's incredible how that erases my tolerance levels, there's also a man downstairs using an electric saw! >_<

3:31 PM
@Arronical oops am I irritating you further? Apologies if so
booooo to electric saws and all who wield them at inopportune times...

@Zanna Not at all. Providing a role model of helpful kindness.
askubuntu.com/questions/824414/need-ifconfig-help this is the same person that wanted to number paragraphs with the cat command

they accepted my answer today!
I spent all my votes
who starred that! @Sandro I'm not amazing, that was just normal :)

hello from kdeconnect!
typing this on my phone, but sending through the computer. supes awesome.
@terdon one of my friends was writing a script to convert python with braces to proper python. I wonder if he ever finished it..

Heh

lets just say he is a C guy.

4:17 PM
@Seth Let's just say he's an OCD guy :P

haha

4:34 PM
vote to close as no-repro

@Anwar I'll upvote your answer to the libpango question when I have some votes tomorrow!

OP left the site 5 minutes before my answer.
I have still 5 votes. I think, I should keep them for some awesome answer I'll see today

@anwar you commented on an answer but im pretty sure i didnt downvote it just commented on it

@Videonauth oh! That's why they say, don't comment under a downvoted answer. They think you're the downvoter :P
i'm removing it

rule of thumb, if an answer i valid, dont downvote, if you can add contructional critique do it as an comment :p
I rarely downvote

4:41 PM
Downvote should be considered a good practice to keep the site healthy

@Videonauth hey, haven't seen you in a while.

@chaskes yeah im very busy here at home and in stress/distress but ill send you more in an email these days

@Videonauth Ok, please do. hang in there.

@Videonauth hugs-if-wanted

I was about to remove Lion Guy from my friend list but I canceled it.

4:43 PM
@Zanna are always welcome :) hugs to save the world :))

:) they save me @Videonauth :)

@Videonauth Hey, sorry to hear you're having a hard time!
But please downvote! Downvotes are at least as important as upvotes.

@terdon I know but still if its somethinf really bad i downvote but normal answers which are still seemingly legit i dont downvote

Probably more so. They help stop people from using wrong solutins and they give an incentive to the authors to improve their answers. People who don't downvote hurt the site much more than people who don't upvote. If you're only going to cast one type of vote, then downvote and forget upvotes.
@Videonauth I would strongly urge you to reconsider. That doesn't help anyone. The person who posted the mediocre answer doesn't improve, the person who asked doesn't get a good answer and some poor sod might try it and think that's the best way.

4:57 PM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 does it repeat old chat messages said by others anywhere?

Of course, I say all this from my high modhorse and then notice that I've only ever cast 204 downvotes. . .
Damn.
Still, that's 204 bad posts voted down.

@terdon Still now i got a comment from anwar who thought i downvoted a good answer, this is what this all is about

@ByteCommander Yes (It's seems like a copycat bot to me!) :D

i dunno how many DVs i cast cant find it on the page

@Videonauth I'm removing that :)

4:58 PM
@Videonauth It's on your profile, scroll down. You have 92

well thats not bad for my time here :)

@terdon what to do with 1 rep users? downvoting won't stop them :)

I have 431 DVs

OMG!

but i get that point, and @anwar 1 rep users wont be stopped right but enough dv and they have done their last answer/question
and its an indicator for others which answer may be valid and functional

5:00 PM
yes
797 DV

@Videonauth I think you should probably ignore me. After going all high and mighty and "protect the site" and all that crap on you, it turns out that only 6.5% of my votes were downvote and, of yours, 7.7% were.
Sigh. I should follow my own advice, I guess.

@terdon nevermind i know what point you wanted to make and its right

I still stand by what I wrote, I just thought I was a better example of it :)

As the elder ones say, "Do as I say, not as I do"

5:04 PM
I see a dinosaur in the CV queue, going above & beyond the call of duty...

user136984
@terdon: That is a good song! :)

How many posts a dinosaur can review per day?

Same as normal dinosaurs.

@ParanoidPanda That it is :)

Ah. Televangelists. Can't beat 'em.
What a concept.

close as dupe - askubuntu.com/questions/824331/… acknowledged by OP

5:06 PM
@terdon 12k :P

Hm, I have a lot of downvotes relative to my total votes.

@Seth Your downvotes? You have 1.2K which is pretty good.

damn misread it -.-
that's what I meant :p

@jokerdino 56.3%!
There we go, this is jokerdino, be like jokerdino.

And Eric beats us all to ground.

5:09 PM
whoa
I knew he voted a lot, but I thought it was upvotes :/

he reviewed a LOT

that moment when there are 15 flags, you clear one, and there are 19 flags -.-

Like "once I had a problem. I decided to use regex. Now I have two problems"

hahaha

Works with Java as well ;)

5:12 PM
you should have quoted it
used all my votes and all my close votes
time for a walk!

Amit Sen GuptaSorry guys I know it is a Linux forum but please help me! That first sentence... and then he asks a Windows question. >_<

@Anwar I guess you can post an answer that works in Ubuntu if you have one...

close (off topic) please ^^

Done
Oh no wait

user136984
@Anwar: But officially they are off-topic and should be closed as such. I also wouldn't encourage them by answering, but that's up to you.

I used all my votes
I am useless!

5:39 PM
I have no clue on their problem. so, not thinking of answering that Q
Post deleted by OP!

user136984
Strange, I can see deleted posts in search results...

user136984
But can't tell the difference until I actually go to them.

That is by design, I think?

AU search?

user136984
I don't think so, I'm sure there was a thing about that a while ago where they stopped letting people with 10k+ from seeing deleted questions in search results.

5:48 PM
@Anwar problem solved!
@ParanoidPanda apparently it didn't work?

user136984
@Zanna: Well, it did to a degree, the option in the square brackets no longer works (or at least it shouldn't I don't remember what it is to test it), but seemingly it doesn't filter them out nor differentiate them in the normal search.

user136984
Maybe it just takes a bit of time though to see that something has been deleted and needs to be removed from the search results.

boo!

Waahh

user136984
Also, this is really great music! :)

user136984

I need 4 rep for 1300 XD

@ParanoidPanda ^\s*$ would fit. Not sure about what special regex dialect Java has thouhg.

user136984
@DavidCole-GrammarPolice: And I need 5 to go to 13,400! ;D

Imma go biking

Nearly finished a project upgrade of mine which has been taking almost half a year now to complete!

user136984
Which feels good because I will finally have my application working in the way I want it to to best benefit its users because currently the released version is quite limited and basic.

Can anyone quickly check the default content of /etc/shells on 16.04 please?

Gmail failing to load for anyone else?

huh! I am finishing my vote today. which answer should I vote? :)

user136984
@NathanOsman: Seems to be working fine over here.

6:25 PM
Odd, it is getting stuck for me.

@NathanOsman loaded here

Just hangs there.
Ah, Shift+F5 fixed it.
Must have been a cache issue.

user136984
@NathanOsman: And now we can all email you! ;P

user136984
Though of course I'd be too paranoid to email anyone.

lol

6:27 PM
I've pasted it here before.
Nothing new.

user136984
So, who will be upgrading to 16.10 when it is released in a month exactly from now?

user136984
(When I say "upgrading", I also mean fresh installs.)

September patch update. <3 nexus
@ParanoidPanda probably me.

@edwinksl whoa

I hear they're changing the name.
Nexus => Pixel.

6:30 PM
I don't remember when I fresh installed.

I want it called pixie.

@Zacharee1 flag worked!

@NathanOsman yeah

Pixie is my backup username ^_^

I don't like it.

6:31 PM
don't worry, pixies are imaginary too.

They're also "theming" the pixel's version of Android.

Q: Did ABC News briefly report that Hillary Clinton had died in the hospital, and did ABC confirm it on the phone with Infowars?

FiksdalI'm obviously not asking whether the story itself is correct, I'm asking whether ABC News briefly reported it or whether it's a series of hoaxes. I saw this alleged screenshot on Reddit just now. It has 1800 upvotes and 623 comments. However, it comes from Twitter where it's retweeted 507 times ...

Q: Is Michelle Obama a transgender woman?

user32176Many of my friends claim that the wife of Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, is a transgender woman. In 2014, comedian Joan Rivers made the claim in a street interview: Rivers: You know Michelle is a tranny. Reporter: I'm sorry? She's a what? Rivers: A transgender. We all know this. A...

7:17 PM
@Seth yeah my colleague was telling me all about it yesterday

7:34 PM
@Zanna argh, i want to edit my comment actually. i gonna delete it and rewrite it :p
i will just add another one i guess

I will delete mine if you want

nah, it is ok :p

I don't mind
We gotta defend snakey

hehe it is ok, i clarified what i had in mind
i know that i myself will find defining the alias to be more confusing than helpful
otherwise, i would totes have done it since i don't use python 2 myself unless i have no choice

I didn't mean to contradict you, I'm sorry if it looks like that
Please tell me what I should do

7:49 PM
@Zanna nothing. your comment was great and i should have been clearer :p

I was just trying to clarify that it was not unsafe

yeah i understand, nobody should think aliases are unsafe

Your comment was great... I get carried away and talk rubbish when people threaten to kill python or start chmodding stuff

well those are both bad things generally
<-- jumps in with no context

Yeah
Too many questions are I killed python and everything broke or I did chmod -R something and my system is FUBAR

7:52 PM
yup

maybe i should suggest OP to use arch where python is actually python 3 there ;P

that question makes 0 sense whatsoever O_O

Hehe good idea, that will get them out of our hair

@Zanna apparently a barebones arch install doesn't include python 2 i think
but i guess you will eventually still have to install it as a dependency

python was installed when I installed a DE

7:58 PM
which DE did you pick?

user136984
@Seth Great news! When will it be available for Ubuntu and what's new? :)
