8:00 PM
@ParanoidPanda did you follow the link lol?
@ParanoidPanda We already passed the debian import freeze, so 17.04. Unless someone backports it.

@Zanna damn i don't have enough rep to downvote that crap

user136984
@Seth: You don't think someone will backport it in?

user136984
Also, yes, I now have looked at the link.

@ParanoidPanda I suspect someone will, but I don't know for sure.

@edwinksl plasma, minimal install... had to install even the terminal emulator

8:04 PM
@Seth @ParanoidPanda here you go launchpad.net/~jonathonf/+archive/ubuntu/vim

user136984
So will they start up more constant work on Vim now that they have made this release?

user136984
@edwinksl: I wouldn't normally trust someone's random PPA.

@ParanoidPanda I don't think it ever stopped being consistent so much as they just did small bits at a time.

@ParanoidPanda jonathonf isn't a random person though

for example, on 16.04 the vim version is 7.4.1689.

8:05 PM
@ParanoidPanda but it is your call

user136984
Well, I would be more inclined to trust the safety and security of the official repositories. Even if this person is completely trustworthy, they still stand a larger chance of being hacked than the main repository does.

that's fine

user136984
I keep thinking it's the weekend for some reason at the moment! :D

user136984
Yesterday I thought it was Saturday, today I keep thinking of it as Sunday! :D

that's a rather confusing thought

user136984
8:15 PM
I think it's possible confused even more by the fact that Sundays and Tuesdays are a similar colour in my mind (CC: @ByteCommander). :D

@Zacharee1 how many incoherent things can one say in a sentence

@edwinksl 0 for them
I forgot that my answer on AMD didn't address 14.04.5 :p
Just had to go edit it with instructions for downgrading Xorg

@Zacharee1 you had it in a different answer, didn't you
you just have to copypasta it back in

@edwinksl yeah, but I just linked to Pilot's answer in that one since the downgrading was brought up by OP
I just linked to Pilot's answer

8:26 PM

mmmmm

user136984
Wow! This is amazing! I never knew anything like this were possible! :D

8:35 PM
^ this guy has no hobbies...
but it looks cool.
as if the floor would explode

@ByteCommander I'm gonna think that is the hobby
maybe no job or life, but that's a hobby

that totally qualifies as a hobby

I wonder how many days he needs to construct this all and how long it takes to tidy up all the mess afterwards, just for a few minutes video...
All those chain reactions remind me of this:

user136984
By the way, am I the only person in here who finds the Bee Gees magical?

They do not match my taste...

user136984
8:46 PM
Actually, I recently managed to scare a builder away by loudly playing lots of Bee Gees music (I didn't realise he didn't like it until he shouted and ran away)! :D

user136984
@ByteCommander: Well, I do play Iron Maiden and the Bee Gees back to back sometimes so I guess you could count me as a strange person! :D

I spent all my votes @Zacharee1 :(

your close votes ?!

yeah

8:53 PM
oh no, I'm turning into Serg !

how?

With my punctuation being all weird .

@Zacharee1 done

:p
@edwinksl thx

I have already voted

8:54 PM
Should I ping Stefano?

@Zanna you used up all your CVs? impressive

@edwinksl thanks to her, we know there's a limit on comment votes :p

@Zacharee1 huh for what. this will get closed eventually

I'm impatient :p

8:55 PM
fortunately I'm really sleepy, I'll have to bow out and escape the frustration of not being able to vote

pinging a mod would be improper here I feel, wasting 3 CVs

@Zanna only you use all yours up :p

sorry

8:55 PM
lol

@Zanna i could sell you my CVs at 1 unicorn dollar per vote

If it's still open when I wake up, it will get the first one

"sorry for moderating the site better than the rest of you" -- @Zanna :p
2

still has 41 CVs left...

hahaha I was just trying to downvote the useless answers on one question, but I can't
@Zacharee1 noooo I never said anything like that!!!

8:57 PM
@edwinksl But that's like one million dollars!
@Zanna it's true though ;p

@Zacharee1 i should have known better than to click

user136984
@ByteCommander: What do you think of Rage Against The Machine?

@Zanna I think you need to run for mod when the elections come up again. You missed them by like 2 months

@Zacharee1 naww but thanks <3

8:58 PM
@Zacharee1 I voted in the election, there's no way I would have run in that... I need like 3 years of experience to be half as helpful as our amazing mods

@Zacharee1 i approve of this

guys! blush

@Zanna @Videonauth almost made it.
And I saw that I missed him today :(

yeah but he is amazing

oh! he's here!
@Zanna doesn't mean you can't be

9:00 PM
yeah but tired just heard the pong

@ParanoidPanda Haven' heard much of them yet - at least not consciously.

@Videonauth you have work now right?

@Videonauth omg you speak

lol

sleeping now, love & pending upvotes to all...

9:01 PM
@Zacharee1 nah just more of the stress i told you about

Time for some VolBeat

@Videonauth :(
@jokerdino I read that as "gherkins," and I was a little confused

Besides, @edwinksl does more of every kind of moderation than me afaik

@Videonauth you should come back full time; see how fast you can get past my 10k :p

9:05 PM
This video is great, it's very emotional.

@Zanna If you run out of all these flags and votes, but he doesn't, how is that possible? :p

Today was exceptional, I was cleaning up, but @edwinksl is ICHIBAN voter and editor and every closed Q has his vote
You do a great job yourself @Zacharee1

lolrite

For real

I only do it when I don't see questions to answer on the first page and/or I'm avoiding work (which I'm using chat to do right now) ;P

9:08 PM
I did not know they also sing in Danish. And that this language sounds so nice. youtube.com/watch?v=TAhyZegVkhw

But seriously I am feeling like a zombie, I gotta zzzzzz

@Zanna heh i am slowing down though and i have no plans to ramp it up :p

after getting 10k, you must use all of your closevotes. it's mandatory lol

@KazWolfe yeah, no

yeah yeah.
you need to use all 50 at least once

9:09 PM
I did that at 3k I think
those many moons ago

@edwinksl that's fine, you could retire knowing you'd done your duty with honour (but please don't)

Serious question

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice Serious answer.

If Ubuntu is a developer kind of OS, built for programmers, why do we need to hit CTRL H to view .files

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice Because it's not a dev os.
It's "Linux for human beings"

9:11 PM
Lets be honest tho

also which dev would view files in nautilius

If you want dev, you install Arch

Yes, more devs use it. No, that doesn't mean it should be built only for devs.

Most linux users arent average day peeps

Ubuntu's market is user-friendliness

9:12 PM
Plus, you seem to forget that quite a few devs are actually completely technically illiterate.

@DavidCole-GrammarPolice A growing percentage of Ubuntu users are

plus, personally, i don't need to see all my hidden files.
It just causes a mess in my home folder and slows me down.

Symlinks

9:13 PM
@KazWolfe I don't wan't to....

My brother is a dev, he knows no bash, he's pinging me like "how do I find out the running kernel again?"

Plus, for almost all dot folders, i either don't actually need to go in them, or i can do what i need in the terminal much faster.
yes, occasionally using the dot in nautilus is easier, so then I use Ctrl+H.

@Zanna how do you do that btw? uname -r?

or I just use the Go command because I know exactly what dot folders I need lol
@Zacharee1 That would be one way.

@KazWolfe Isn't that a Mac feature?

9:14 PM
uname -a gives the full id string, but uname -r will give you the version itself
@Zacharee1 Nautilus has it too

huh @both

there's a place you click to manually type a path

@Zacharee1 yeah

But, @DavidCole-GrammarPolice, I just use a symlink in my ~/Games folder that points to the MC install.
Works fine for me lol

9:18 PM
 ln -s ~/.minecraft/ ~/Minecraft/

i think. i honestly can never remember if the link target or the link name comes first

same here xD

i think it's in the opposite order when using ln and ln -s

I usually just try it and most times I get an error that the link already exists - then I know I did it the wrong way round again

9:24 PM
sonofa... family member is watching netflix and murdering our pipe

target for ln -s
@ByteCommander I try it, and if my computer explodes, I know I did it wrong

I'm watching anime...
Anyone knows "Black Bullet"?

brb kicking roku off network.
time to unplug the patch cable!

Hey, I just got a gold bagde!

Q: Process 'niceness' vs. 'priority'

Byte CommanderWhen running top, I can see this (shortened) example output: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 4586 ipc-adm+ 20 0 1303900 605152 92844 S 30,6 29,3 3:52.88 firefox 3985 ipc-adm+ 20 0 258588 124508 63072 S 12,2 6,0 0:40.04 compiz 3092 ro...

9:38 PM
@KazWolfe i remember it as following what cp and mv do

user136984
10:15 PM
Well, goodnight folks! :)

@KazWolfe why you kicking the roku off?

10:51 PM
can I choose a kernel name when compiling it? I'm adventuring myself into compiling one for the first time (on a VM for safety!)
or will it always be "vmlinuz-uname -r-new"?

11:08 PM
@IanC You are after 'Local version - append to kernel release' in General setup

@TheXed 300KB connection.
I can't have Netflix at the same time as security updates

11:24 PM
@andrew.46 Thanks man! I'll look for it :)
I'm trying to go step by step to really understand what I'm doing, even though I'm doing it on a VM
just checked dependencies on ./Documentation/Changes. There are a few not installed dependencies, but I heard it is ok to not have every single one. The ones that I had, which was most of them, were up do date. I think Ubuntu already comes with every really necessary dependency for a kernel build, so it should be ok

@IanC I confess that I have not compiled a kernel under Ubuntu as grub is too hard for me :). Slackware is easier: docs.slackware.com/howtos:slackware_admin:kernelbuilding

@edwinksl ikr
@KazWolfe dem securitee updaetz

@andrew.46 I imagine it's probably easier to configure LiLo, seems like it's a more simplistic loader, but I'll try it with grub (not even sure how to install LiLo on ubuntu). I think it will show up on boot after a update-grub and some minor changes on /etc/default/grub.conf though

Have fun :)

Q: Questions about a backup server and a shell script that syncs a folder content with the back up server

user189803The questions are about a backup server, Ubuntu 14.04 is used. need a way to turn on a machine remotely via the network ( supposedly by sending a package to it's MAC adress?) need a way to shut down the same machine remotely via the network ( shutdown command?) create a script which should, at ...

11:41 PM
thanks @andrew.46 , I'll try to! :D
since I'm doing it on a VM, guess I'll have fun even if everything goes wrong haha

11:54 PM
