What the OP says is true for me too... I've tried the other settings. I can make a shortcut for mate-screenshot -w which grabs the window in focus, but setting one for mate screenshot -a does nothing

no... it's not installed in mate, because mate has mate-screenshot. Hitting prt sc makes a screenshot, no problem
 
oh for me it worked without installing ..strange
 
By the way with gnome-screenshot you can just do shift+prt_scrn shortcut. That works the same as gnome-screenshot -a
 
it's the command to select an area... which works fine when you type the command - the pointer changes to a crosshair, and you grab your selection
but it refuses to be set as a shortcut

I'm not that concerned about having the shortcut myself - if I really want to grab a selection, I will type the command (in fact I made an alias for it already)
I just think it's really interesting that it doesn't work!

I tried setting my alias instead of the full command as shortcut, and now instead of nothing at all, I get a popup "error running ([alias]) which is linked to ([key combination)]"
 
there are also web browser extensions to take screenshot .. but then it will be limited to web browser only

@KazWolfe He is on 16.04 LTS, upgrading to 16.10 which is a development release is not a good idea, and second - upgrading just because one small thingy doesn't work is a last - resort solutoin

It's technically deprecated, like apt-get but nobody really cares
and apt is awesome. Definitely better than pacman and rpm, imo

Better than rpm and pacman - agreed. But doesn't mean its ideal. What I like about snaps and docker containers is that there's no dependency issues

@Serg: Oh, ordering is very easy! At least in Japanese, you just say something like this "いなりをさんことおちゃおください".
 
@chaskes memorization isn't the big issue for me. I suck at reading most menu entries, because they're mostly chars i don't recognize
 
that's part of what I mean. word, char, tone, meaning are all part of one whole
plus it's often hand-written, which I can't read well at all

I've been thinking about buying an authentic Kimono. Though all the ones so far I've tried to buy have been for women! It's just they look so nice, and I want them, but they keep getting me into embarrassing situations in Japanese clothes shops... :D

Interesting bug - if i highlight a tab in chromium , the launcher returns from fullscreen mode. . . . What i mean is, i have virtual box in second monitor, in full screen . . . .and launcher pops up from beneath it, if i highlight any tab on my laptop's internal monitor
