12:13 AM
evening

Good evening.

how are you guys doing tonight?

Fine. And you?

me, i'm getting a bit sleepy. . . . was working on my dynamic_mouse_speed.py script till 2 am yesterday

good, just getting back at the C learning, trying to go fast and get sooner to the more intermediate stuff :)
want to start programming sockets
but first review and relearn the fundamentals of C

12:20 AM
I should get back to C as well. As electrical-engineering student, I need it for microcontrollers and stuff like that

you guys can recommend any really really light linux distro to use as a VM?
I want to make some networking tests in virtualbox, but a regular distro usually takes up too much RAM, just wanted a distro with X-server and basic networking functionalities
to simulate at least a 3 computers LAN network

PuppyLinux is a good choice.

@IanC any distro will do , really, as long as you don't use GUI. When you wanna use light GUI , you could go with lubuntu, xubuntu, puppy linux ( i have it on USB) , freebsd with a GUI of your choice is OK. MATE is also quite OK.

this answer is so wrong i am facepalming hard askubuntu.com/a/808103/15003

Deepin is very pretty , but can be a bit laggy with gui
i think im gonna write a window-arranger script. Over time, people have been asking on AU for script to do 1/3 of a screen, 3/4 of a screen , etc. I wanna put it all into one script so that one could rearrange windows however they want

12:27 AM
cool, think I'll try puppy linux

Question : is it possible to run chrome without any DE ?

DE?

Desktop Environment

@CodeX yeah of course, how did you think people using WMs surf the interwebs? :P

@edwinksl oh .. so do you think it will save much power

12:32 AM
it will save power yeah since DE consumes resources and fewer resources consumed = lower power footprint
but not sure how much

@edwinksl hmm thanks .. will test it

sounds good

12:46 AM
just downloaded puppy linux, going to test it as soon as I finish some of the C lessons :)

1:00 AM
speaking of testing, need to fire up my MATE vm and
. . . . maybe finally edit my answer for the lks-indicator
which is overdue by weeks already
$ VBoxManage list  webcams
Video Input Devices: 1
.1 "TOSHIBA Web Camera - HD"
/dev/video0
There must be a way to expose my web-cam to virtual machines
mkay, imma go smoke and probably lie down

STAHP SMOKEZ

I think Serg is addicted to smoking. :(

what an astute observation

lol

I mean, wow, someone addicted.. to one of the most highly addictive substances?
not common

1:14 AM
I'm addicted to stackexchange it's like Jeff Atwood MindControl (Help Me!). :D

man, pointers are a simple concept, but can get really complicated

pointers?

char * zacharee1

yeah, in concept it's simple:

//Say you have a string in memory, a sequence of chars ending in '\0'

char *string[]={"String1", "String2"};

Lol

1:17 AM
this is fairly simple to understand, there's a place in memory with the chars, and you just point to the address of the first char

gets complicated when you have pointers for pointers
I mean, I can get the idea, but can't see what's truly going on in some situations

Point is.. where is your Pointer Pointing

@IanC pointers are complicated - they're like translation between C and assembly. There's concept of pointers in assembly too
Black tea seems to really help with easing down on throat and stuff , especially for heavy smokers like myself

@Serg I would say raw assembly is even beyound that since you have to create a concept of variables yourself, you just have the memory addresses and have to worry about allocation, accessing it, changing it, so you will basically have to deal with addresses all the time

1:27 AM
so your plan is to die early @Serg

but I don't think no one makes programs in raw assembly, I've seem some assemblers where you can create variables by giving them a name like in higher level languages

@CodeX no, my plan is to slowly stop smoking, but so far I'm not stopping

@Serg you might need to reprogram your unconscious mind to help you stop smoking

we are going to need a direct channel to your gf so we can tell her to tell you what to do :D

1:29 AM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 the nice thing about Stack Exchange is that it becomes so addicting it unaddicts itself after a while

@IanC lol , some professional hackers and engineers can write pure assembly programs. Or those people who deal with embedded devices. But it really is a pain in the lower body. We've been doing simple while loop in assembly on pic18 microcontroller , took us like 45 minutes

(I totally just made that word up :D)

@Seth nah, so far it hasn't unaddicted me. It actually is quite bad sometimes. Doing AU stuff instead of homework

@Serg yeah, assembly is crazy stuff, I've studied the basics of it a long time ago. You have to reinvent the wheel all the time

I didn't say it happens over night.

1:31 AM
conditionals, loops

@edwinksl hack my wechat and you'll know :p

it's all on your hands, you just have the memory and the processor to play with hehe

This is my second vtc post :) Hold up on area 51 why can you vtc at 150 reps weird?

it really depends on a processor. If it's ARM , you'll have more tools than on motorolla 68k
pic18 is also different from others since it kind of has working register

I just studied x86 ASM, shouldn't the basics be the same? Like the registers and basic memory/processor interation? thought the major change would be the interrupts (and registers size in case of different architetures)
I wish I knew where my assembly book was, guess I'd make a much better use of it today
back then I didn't understand some things like I do today (and I still feel I'm far from getting everything right)

1:37 AM
yes, register size differs, but also instructions differ. ARM has many instructions which can be treated as if then else if statements. I mean, that's why people like ARM a lot. What also differs is that 68k allows you to access memory directly, but ARM doesn't. you have to copy values into register first, then operate on things, and store back.

I didn't get the concept of area 51

@IanC honestly, i feel about the same. I regret that i didn't study programming earlier and better. I feel like i lost a lot of time in my teen years and now i am only starting to catch up
But i had no computer back then either......sad
actually , even after i got one, i didn't start right away.

@Serg Well, if it makes you feel better, I think you're a good way ahead of me :p
but it's never too late to learn
I'm diving full speed into networking protocols, reading some C coding
readed a bash book to understand linux a little better
(linux shell)

i should go into networking a bit too. It's still very shaddy area for me. But as of right now, i do lots of python

Q: How can I not default to root on the new Ubuntu on Windows?

JamesWhen I open the new bash shell on windows, I'm greeted with root@[computer_name]:/mnt/c/Windows/System32# I'd rather not login as root by default, nor would I like to start out in System32. That seems like a horrible recipe for disaster. What's the best way to default to a different user (I've...

1:44 AM
Speaking of C . . . .since i am doing a lot of desktop programming lately, maybe i could do some C code for X11 stuff. Or even Gtk

nice, I'd like to see some of those codes :)
might sound like a stupid question, but is X11 the X-Server running on ubuntu?

yes

is it responsable for the GUI and all input/output (mouse, keyboard, sound, etc)?
I get a little confused because if X11 is responsable for the GUI, where does GNOME and lightdm play? are they part of X11 or maybe used by it?

GUI and input devices. Sound can be managed by other things
lightdm is just login screen. that's all. Gnome is what makes windows pretty
if you use something very raw, like 9wm, you will see it has no decorations
just plain square window, no frame and no buttons
gnome and compiz are also responsible for workspaces
on plain desktop environment like motif or 9wm there is no workspaces. Just one desktop
I have bunch of other desktop environments and sometimes use motif or blackbox or openbox. I like the classic look and feel they give to my desktop

isn't lightdm also responsable to make the windows and GUI more pretty? Thought that's why you had to "remove" it to install GNOME. So they will basically interact with X11 to expand it?

1:58 AM
yes, they expand on basic x11 functionality
You don't have to remove lightdm to install gnome, by the way

thought they conflicted, nice to know

Gnome has its own gdm, but it's not required. i cam use either one separately from each other
You know, 10, even 5 years ago i could not image that I'd be discussing bunch of technical stuff with people in AU chat and doing bunch of scripts for moving around windows and stuff.
a lot has changed really

you took the red pill
:D

2:15 AM
Yup, i did. I sure wish it happened earlier though

how old are you?

26 as of this July
And you ?

lol, I had to check which year we are in
I'll turn 23 november
you're young dude, plenty of time to learn and become a linux guru :p

I also recently acquired the age of 26 :D

happy late birthday!

2:26 AM
Thanks.

Yeah, there's plenty to . I just tend to look back on paths too much and stuff.....And there's also the whole peer pressure and parental critique and blah blah......

pressure on what you mean? career?

2:44 AM
pretty much. All my ex classmates graduated, have jobs and families. I'm still im college and without any serious job or possessions
i know it'll come with time, it's just that the world moves much faster than i do

Q: were my ubuntu hacked?

D.webManSorry my grammar I'm from Brazil. I see my ubuntu today night and my computer name changed automatically for "localhost" my ubuntu is freshly installing.I only installing "sudo apt-get install myspell-pt-br" And I already activated my firewall. My ubuntu is 16.04.1Lts desktop. was I hacked? thank...

Somewhat funny. localhost == hacked

3:00 AM
were it?

@Serg don't worry about this stuff, just live the way you want to live. My ex classmates are probably working in chemical engineer industries, going through the expected path, and I decided to move to the coast and work mooring boats. I'm happy here
and I don't think I made a bad call, I just made MY call. So if you believe what you are doing is what you want for yourself, I don't see why care too much about those kind of stuff

3:11 AM
well, I think I advanced a good bit, next lesson "Stack and Heap allocations", I was just about to research it :p

I made my own choices too. At first when i chose electrical - engineering I was slightly miserable but i like this stuff more and more. But I really get excited by programming. That's why I spend so much time scripting on AU. I mean, I am not much of a hardware guy, more interested in software and coding. And while it can be challenging, it brings me satisfaction

then just keep doing it, what are you graduating in right now?
(gotta update the other distro, brb)

Well , I don't think I'm gonna be graduating any time soon, I think I need like 2 more years. I failed a lot of classes, so it took me long time to get back on track

3:23 AM

@NathanOsman sigh Reddit..
I forgot my debian password. CRAP
do I have to reinstall debian ;-;

How very very interesting . . . I can get order of windows in window stack . . . Hmmm, this could be very very useful for rearranging windows in specific fashion

@CodeX by the way, how's the script working ? just making sure if you're satisfied with the performance and stuff like that
@CodeX you can always hide icons, there's an option for that
command actually

@CodeX what kind of desktop are you using ? Looks familiar but can't put a finger on what exactly it is. Blackbox ?
oh, sorry, go ahead

@Serg Kde

KDE ? I thought it had start menu with K button , like start menu in windows
Does look pretty though

Kubuntu .. I customized it

3:43 AM
Ah, I see
well good job , looks really pretty. Kind of like a cross between chrome desktop and blackbox desktop

It's better than Gnome. But then again even GNUstep is better than Gnome.

I'm content with Unity so far (especially since i am on SSD and 8 GB of RAM). Unity is pretty and has enough functionality of its own. If I need something lightweight - openbox or blackbox. But that's just me.

4:03 AM
hmm I never heard about blackbox .. does it have something to do with airplane xD

:3 nope, no airplanes at all.

I like this time widget .. sync's with google calendar

and it even has weather update

yeah now that I have advertised you should switch to kubuntu xD

Mmmm, maybe not entirely . . .I'll get Kubuntu VM for sure though

4:09 AM
cool

Oh dear... Apparently I am required to have Arch Linux installed on my machine as the primary OS by the end of tomorrow for my studies... Eek... Ubuntu will have to run in my VM then for the time being...

ooh what are these studies?

user136984
@Zanna: Well, it's part of my kind of computer studies which are focusing mostly on the internal workings of Linux and the Linux kernel at the moment, I will need to compile it soon too. And Arch is likely to help me with that as it's a completely DIY OS... :D

It will be a good experience for me I think. Just scary because I don't know much about Arch! :D

Q: Ubuntu: `debdelta-upgrade` only upgrades one delta at a time

agcWith plain Debian debdelta-upgrade works correctly. It gets a list of upgradeable files, and downloads all available deltas. Or at least I think it has a similar name.

@ParanoidPanda web.archive.org. Enter URL. Travel back in time. :)

@grooveplex: Right, what's that got to do with my message about Firefox (that you replied to)?

I think it's a new feature in Firefox too. No More 404?

Is it? Where does it say that?

user136984

You mean it shows you previous versions of webpages when the webpage cannot be found? That sounds a bit odd and some might not want that...

@ParanoidPanda did you lose all your tabs when you restarted firefox?

user136984
No, why?

user136984
Did you?

I haven't restarted it yet, that's why I'm asking haha

user136984
Well, it depends on how you have it setup, but if it normally does then it should this time too.

1:26 PM
I definitely would want a 404 rather than some cached version that I might not realise is old?

agree

user136984
If you use the "Restart" button it should remember which tabs you had open.

user136984
Yes, agreed, I haven't heard anything about such a feature in Firefox...
