@ParanoidPanda Can you run getfacl /path/to/file and show the ouput?

@ByteCommander: ^^

Hell, everything looks right over there!
I'm starting to wonder whether there's a computer problem at all.
Show a screenshot of that folder opened in Nautilus and an ls of that folder (both on the same pic).
I can't believe this.

user136984
About that... There are quite a few personal pics in there, if I can black out the images that will be fine though...

user136984
Just GIMP it...

user136984
I just need to finish writing to someone quickly... Then I'll do it.

user136984
Why do you need a screenshot anyway? Don't you believe me?

11:33 AM
it sounds rather unusual

You can censor the thunbnails, but please leave at least enough of the file name so that we can compare which item in Nautilus belongs to which ls entry.

user136984
Ahh!!!!! They are there! They just appeared with a huge bunch of my other files! And now my other files are missing... This is not funny...

user136984
That gave me a real shock, there were much fewer files in there just 5 minutes ago...

o.OOOOO????

lol
@ParanoidPanda how many times have you hit F5?

11:35 AM
> ___ <

user136984
@Zacharee1: None... I just kept restarting the file manager...

user136984
But this really is most strange... Isn't it?

yes
reboot?

better rebuy.
That machine seems haunted.

user136984
@Zacharee1: This started yesterday, I have rebooted many times since then...

11:36 AM
hmm

this is bizarre

Stab it with a wood stick and shoot it with silver bullets after waving some garlic around it. Then put it in a bonfire.

what happens if you install another file manager?
@ByteCommander lol

i volunteer to provide said bonfire

o_O

user136984
11:37 AM
@ByteCommander: I feel like I should file a bug report somewhere just to let someone know of the issue, which package do you think best? Or maybe I should just do it under the Ubuntu GNOME project on LaunchPad...

I believe I have some spare garlic left...

user136984
@Zacharee1: I already tried Nemo, couldn't find it in there either.

hmm
try a different DE?

I'm out. This is getting too mysterious.

be brave, we are all here

11:40 AM
:P

user136984
This is the strangest thing that's happened to me in a while... I'm starting to even question my own sanity... Seriously...

user136984
I'm asking myself "Were they really there the whole time and you just didn't notice?"... But they can't of been... I checked!

user136984
Unless I'm seeing things or completely bananas, they weren't there...

If there's something strange

Who you gonna call?

If there's something weird

Q: Questions regarding Kubuntu, Xubuntu and so on

ranchoI rarely see any questions regarding Kubuntu, Xubuntu and so on. Does it mean that these operating systems are also rarely used as compared to Ubuntu?

12:07 PM
@ParanoidPanda do a SMART test on your hard drive

user136984
Yes, that's probably a good idea...

user136984
Also, do you know if there are any video editors pre-installed on Ubuntu that would allow me to shorten the length of a video?

uh
no

user136984
Do you know of any I could install?

user136984
I remember using one, but now I don't remember the name...

12:10 PM
nope

duckduckgo is your friend

Google is too :}

@ParanoidPanda is.gd/ssY3PA
@Zacharee1 Google is hardly a friend...

@ParanoidPanda avconv
hjmm
$ avconv
The program 'avconv' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt install libav-tools
NOT there by default. sorry

I'm really unsure about a title of a question I'm about to post

Does "How to make invoking ruby without arguments open a REPL?" make much sense?

sure

user136984
12:34 PM
Firefox 48 has now been released!

user136984
When do you think we will be able to upgrade to it?

there is a firefox ppa iirc

user136984
Ah! OpenShot is the video editor I am looking for I think!

user136984
@edwinksl: But only for Beta and the other stages, we have to wait for the Stable one to come from the repos, if I recall correctly.

how about snap for firefox? is there one yet?

12:39 PM
I like how that Megadrol spam led to a dead link

Megadrol? LMAO (that would mean something like 'mega dump' in Dutch)

and why are we getting to much Megadrol spam?

@ParanoidPanda never :=)

You actually click the links in spam posts? o.O

@ByteCommander if they're advertising a product, it's probably not malware

user136984
12:40 PM
Or it could be both...

Erm... Not necessarily.
(agreeing with what Panda said)

user136984
It getting me to a dead end would freak me out even more... I'd think a drive-by-download, because otherwise, what's the point?

user136984
People get ransomware from these sorts of things you know.

what is it with people and not realizing "probably" means "not definitely, but likely"?
@ParanoidPanda stupid bots that haven't been turned off

user136984
Well, you might have been lucky this time, but I wouldn't test your luck any further, if you do it with too many of them you are bound to get something.

12:45 PM
I don't do it a lot

user136984
Well, I wouldn't advise really ever doing it... I used to scan the spam links we got here with VirusTotal... Let's just say you wouldn't have wanted to go to any of them... Lots of JavaScript malware and all sorts...

AdBlock :D
and I've never had a problem
it's weird

user136984
More like you haven't ever checked.

I never get sick (besides headaches), and I never get viruses, no matter how many shady sites I go to

I didn't pass in review test with this askubuntu.com/questions/799492/…
I still think, it is less Ubuntu and more programming and as such Off-Topic

user136984
12:48 PM
@Zacharee1: Really? I could sort that out you know... >:P

no thx
@AnwarShah it's been decided somewhere somehow that Bash programming is on-topic, since Bash is such an integral part of Ubuntu
it'd probably be better on unix.se, but it's OK here

They shouldn't be using that to catch reviewers though imo

I asked a new question :) askubuntu.com/questions/806564/…

the system is automated
it just chooses stuff

and sometimes the system is wrong

12:52 PM
@grooveplex do you think it is on-topic here?

@ParanoidPanda only threats Malwarebytes found were some things I know about already

@AnwarShah yes, definitely

@AnwarShah good evening
in theory i can also use data recovery software on my seagate 2 TB disk right ?

@grooveplex i am feeling the opposite. sorry
@gansub good evening
brb

anybody used data recovery software on Seagate external hard disk?

1:03 PM

apt works on 14.04?

Yes

it shouldn't o_O
it's a 16.04 thing

Why does everyone think that?

because it was introduced in 16.04

user136984
1:08 PM
Firefox 48, please hurry up in coming to me!

Do all of you use Firefox?

no @ParanoidPanda

I use Chromium

I use Chrome

Hi there, can I ask someone's opinion on this edit? It doesn't look like an improvement to me, and I am tempted at rollbacking it: askubuntu.com/posts/804363/revisions

1:18 PM
that's not a good edit
it removes content

and it makes no sense
@AndreaLazzarotto I recommend rollback

@Zacharee1 @grooveplex thank you :)

user136984
1:28 PM
Why does OpenShot always give me a core dump when I close it?

is it version 1.x or 2.x?
if it is version 1.x it's not a bug, it's intended behavior :D

Can some approve or reject this?
Thank You! :)
:)

user136984
It's version 1.x... Version 2.x was the same for me though...

user136984
But it was really hard to use, it just didn't work at all as expected... All the buttons randomly didn't do what they did do half of the time...

user136984
But I think I finally got out of it what I wanted... I hope it just didn't destroy the video quality again...

1:34 PM
@HenryWHHackv2.0 already done
@ParanoidPanda I stopped using OpenShot after it became so fond of taking Kdenlive as inspiration that it started to crash every 60 seconds
in the meanwhile, Kdenlive developers removed all the crashing bits and now it is quite stable
basically, the situation in the past (OpenShot super stable, Kdenlive like Peter Griffin's palestinian alarm clock) was totally reversed

Tablet, come faster

Kdenlive some years ago was like: youtube.com/watch?v=X7_0NoRHOEM Now, OpenShot took its place and Kdenlive works flawlessly :)

user136984
@AndreaLazzarotto: So what would you recommend then as good stable video editor? The most I need is to cut bits out and sometimes join two tracks together. Then it's important for me to have good export video quality. But apart from that I don't need much. OpenShot is a real resource hog and really no good so I would like to find something else...

user136984
So you recommend Kdenlive then?

user136984
Can that be installed from the repositories?

user136984
1:39 PM
Actually OpenShot 2.x worked much better, and actually had the features more or less working as intended, however it did crash a lot for no reason.

@ParanoidPanda yes I recommend Kdenlive from the repos

Q: Ubuntu 16.04.1: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Vitor MazucoI just make a upload to Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04, but sometimes my PC appear this massege and My laptop break it. For I use again, I need to reboot for work. What is necessary for fix it?

user136984
God this is taking ages and really slowing down my machine... I decided to be a good citizen and report the crash, but this dump is just huge... It's slowing down everything!

it takes at least triple time to get used to rather than OpenShot (OpenShot takes 2-5 minutes to be productive, Kdenlive 6-15 minutes) but once you understand, it's very easy and it has more features or the same feature are a bit easier (better snapping, more fine-grained parameters, etcetera)

user136984
Ok, well, my life is full of things that work for everybody else, and what I have is identical, but faulty in some way or hard to use... For no apparent reason... Actually I get worried if everything seems to be running smoothly because it means the problem I will encounter is still unknown... :D

user136984
1:43 PM
Seriously, nothing I have ever used has not given me some grief.

@ParanoidPanda Don't use anything :D

user136984
Like my machine for instance, I know somebody with the exact same model and everything, theirs works fine! Mine is completely bonkers! :D

The only way to win is not to play... was it something like that?

user136984
Well, I guess at least my cakes usually turn out fine... :D

user136984
I'm not sure what happened last time... I think a mixture of oversized cake tins and the wrong sugar probably was the combination which made it all flat and burnt... :D

user136984
1:46 PM
Now I'm sort of scared of doing any baking... But it's never happened before so hopefully it will be fine again this time too.

Maybe you used Microsoft Sugar or Outlook Baking Powder

user136984
Maybe... :D

user136984
The health food shop I went to tried to convince me that I should buy their not raw cane sugar because there apparently is not such thing as raw cane sugar... Of course their version smells strange, is all stuck together, and is very expensive! Maybe that's what ruined my cake! All the other shops are willing to give me raw cane sugar! :D

user136984
So that's probably why it tasted funny. But I suspect the oversized baking trays were the main causes of the issues, otherwise I don't know.

user136984
1:50 PM
Because I found and used the wrong ones, the normal ones I use are smaller.

[ SmokeDetector ] Bad keyword with email in answer: Permission denied running perl by Andre Carneiro on askubuntu.com …

Gosh, that seems more like a post on a dating site
@ParanoidPanda coincidentally i was talking about this with some friends a few days ago, they explained that most of the nice looking can sugar is just normal sugar that gets re-"covered" to look like can sugar
and the sticky one apparently is the real one

user136984
:D

user136984
2:05 PM
@AndreaLazzarotto: Interesting... Well, I think I will buy the sugar from the normal place this time, whichever of those it turns out to be, it works! :)

user136984
Oh dear... OpenShot completely destroyed the quality yet again... And I don't want to have to do any more work installing things and trying to get them working so I think I will just install Flash so that the YouTube video editor will work for me...

user136984
Well, install it temporarily and very restrictively anyway...

Q: Edit rejected as conflicted with a subsequent edit

NuwanAs a beginner I usually answer questions very rarely as I think my knowledge not sufficient yet. So I read questions and answers as much as I can and edit questions to correct spelling and formatting to make it easy to read. One of my recent edits rejected by the Community♦ and the reason was, ...

@grooveplex which was there first though?

user136984
@AndreaLazzarotto: Wow... kdenlive sure has a lot of dependencies... Hope it works as you said...

@ParanoidPanda so does KDE :p
you're probably installing a lot of KDE's included packages as well

user136984
I guess that is probably it...

@AndreaLazzarotto: Ok... How exactly do you export the file to .MOV or anything apart from the native format?

3 days in and some are on 3k+ >:-D
who needs to be told about that? :X

@Rinzwind you're just jealous that you don't know how to cheat the system and get 1k a day :p

2:47 PM
naah I can keep up with 200 a day just fine ;)

@grooveplex That answer was there a minute earlier than mine, so you can't accuse him of plagiarism. If the downvote was yours, I'd like to ask you to rethink it.

@Zacharee1 check this out storyleak.com/…

But that's VA not KY

and you might not be a TOR developer ;) In any case my point was: it happens

2:54 PM
I guess
but this isn't that drastic a detour
probably just Amazon making sure it doesn't come in one day, since I didn't pay for that :p

I mean it happens in the USA, as long as your privacy laws can be always ignored by official agencies
anyway my link was not 100% serious, I was not stating you are being tracked by the NSA... take it as a joke :)

where's my tinfoil hat?

not available on Ubuntu... but you can use UFW :D
@ParanoidPanda userbase.kde.org/Kdenlive/Manual/Project_Menu/Render I guess this is useful

@Zacharee1 Maybe they're simply delivering some other stuff on their route as well? Or do you think they send a nearly empty car just with your little package on such a trip?

@ByteCommander ITS ALL FOR ME
but, yes, that's a good point

3:07 PM
@Serg Found a bug in powerflowindy!
Or rather a misinterpretation of the upower output.

Conversely, who knows if Amazon uses a single van for all parcels? They might as well have other express couriers covering that area while @Zacharee1's parcel could be sent together with parcels directed to both Carolinas

If the battery is fully charged to 100% but AC is still plugged in, it shows state: discharging

@Serg you around?
@ByteCommander I think that's how charging works though
once the battery reaches 100%, it stops charging
redirects power to the rest of the computer

That means however that powerflowy thinks the battery is discharging now and reads its energy-rate: value.
This has no meaning in this situation while AC is plugged in though and seems to just be an arbitrary constant.

@Zacharee1 and @ByteCommander moring

3:11 PM
yes
@ByteCommander I guess

@Serg You should probably parse the AC adapter's online value instead of the battery's state value.

but the battery is still technically discharging

Yeah, well, not really.

Q: Merge partitions between logical and extended partition

alfredopacinoI'm not sure how to merge that unallocated 5GB space with the ext4 partition (sda5). Is there is a way (without formatting the ext4 filesystem)?

3:29 PM
If you dual boot be careful ^^

My SSD has been Windoze - free since I bought it

o_O
@Serg wanna make a script?

@Zacharee1 for what ? Removing windows ?

not exactly :p

@Serg yes ..Morning .. how are you doing

3:33 PM
it might already exist too, idk
but I have this folder full of plugins for my MC server

bash not working so well in windows

@CodeX morning. Just a question , how do you slow down imwheel?

I symlink to those plugins from my server directories to save disk space and have easier organization

mpg123 doesn't work ... notify-send doesn't send notification to windows

but I have a lot of servers and a lot of plugins which I'm not sure I'm using

3:34 PM
by decreasing those values at the right end ..one sec

@Serg would you be able to make something that compares the files in that Plugins folder to a bunch of other folders and then tells me which files in the Plugins folder aren't being linked to at all?

@Zacharee1 I think it's possible, yes , we could check something like if serverA/pluginA is symlink or not to
something else

yeah
but it needs to check multiple locations to compare

ok, can we have an example ?

Well I have a plugin called Farm Protect
it exists on all my normal servers, except, I think, my Multiverse server
So if the script checked the MV server, it would see that the plugin wasn't symlinked and recommend it for deletion
but
it's still on all the other servers

3:39 PM
contains of .imwheelrc

".*"
None, Up, Button4, 4 < this is to decrease scrolling up speed
None, Down, Button5, 5 < this is to decrease scrolling down speed
Control_L, Up, Control_L|Button4
Control_L, Down, Control_L|Button5
Shift_L, Up, Shift_L|Button4
Shift_L, Down, Shift_L|Button5

So the script would have to pick a file in the plugins folder, then check BungeeCord, Main, Minigames, Multiverse, Schematics, SkyWars, Survival, and Whatever (actual name)

@CodeX so smallest speed is 1 ? i tried negative vals, doesn't work

to see if that file exists anywhere in those locations

@Serg I guess so

The locations are exactly the same, except for the name of the server, so it's always /home/Servers/SERVERNAME/public/plugins/PLUGINNAME.jar

3:40 PM
@Zacharee1 ok, let me sketch up something , brb

kk

@Zacharee1 what's the plugins folder is called ? That one is for server, right ?

there is also -k switch which should kill previous imwheel process as per document .. not sure if it works

@Serg yeah. The plugins folder is /home/Servers/PLUGINS/
and the server names I put above aren't all the folder names
