Hehe, I dont have a script for my own stupidity :p

@Serg You have a script for everything.

but yes, i do have scripts for a lot of things
Anybody wants to test it ?

I will try it out if it's not a virus LOL! :D

Nope, it is not. I dont hack :p

@Serg what about all that 1337 h4xx0r talk

12:35 AM
@Zacharee1 i've realised that i need to be discrete and keep quiet about all the l337 things i do, so yeah . . . .i don't hack :X

lel

hmm, i found idea for improving the script

@Serg y u no hack zack

@edwinksl because despite occasional annoyance, he does bring me satisfaction from annoying him with my puns

good point

12:42 AM
so I would never hack him, i do like Zach

Coming to think of it, python ( if you know how to quickly use a few tools and keep a boilerplate list of custom functions) can be very very powerful and quick tool for prototyping lots and lots of things. I did this link_windows.py script in about 2.5 hours. Bash version would probably take me half the day, even with boilerplate

this one could be kept, i don't think it's a version related issue

@Serg the problem is we can't know that unless OP upgrades
we could spend time troubleshooting and it might turn out that 16.04 fixes it
Also, you can't easily install software on EOL releases, can you? at least not updated stuff

What's gi?

1:20 AM
what?

@Serg I can't run the code because python don't know what gi is neither do I.

oops
neet to fix that

Did you meant git??

@HenryWHHackv2.0 , no import gi , this is correct
@HenryWHHackv2.0 can you give me full line that is failing for you ?
Also,are you using ubuntu ?

1:24 AM
OK , so what line is failing ?
what is the error ?

One Sec.

why in the world would you import the entirety of gi? So much namespace pollution .-.

Hey Seth! :)

@Seth because that's the only way i can shut up the warnings about version

why not just specify the version and actually solve it?

1:33 AM
@Seth how ?

@Seth this is the same thing i am doing . Did you see my script ?

no I did not.

#!/usr/bin/env python
import gi
gi.require_version('Gdk', '3.0')
gi.require_version('Gtk', '3.0')
from gi.repository import Gdk, Gtk
@Seth actually , would you volunteer to test it ?

lol seth blooper

1:38 AM
in a little bit maybe

Very well, I'll leave a link here: askubuntu.com/q/805515/295286
this fly is annoying the heck out of me

i am still not sure why gi keeps outputting practically useless error messages

Those are warnings . . . .which can be ignored . . . but unfortunately , users not familiar with that are gonna freak out "It doesn't work" , Uh, trust me buddy it works

yeah it freaks people out for no good reason, in serg we trust i guess

@HenryWHHackv2.0 What does this tell you in command line : apt-cache policy python-gi
run that ^

lol wut german football spam
that is new

@Serg Oh why didn't you said that in the code with #Run apt-cache policy python-gi to use this code?

because python-gi is supposed to be there by default
i don't remember installing python-gi
but in your case it is not there

1:48 AM
Still doesn't work. :(

@HenryWHHackv2.0 run apt-cache policy python-gi does it say None ?
if it says none, run sudo apt-get install python-gi
After installation is complete you can use the script

Is it not sudo apt install <package name>?

same
doesn't matter
@HenryWHHackv2.0 what's your Ubuntu version ?

Holly Moderators GUI programming! :O

@Serg what a day yesterday horrible
@AnwarShah and I tried to fix my dependencies
and went home defeated
I tell you defeated
brave man though

1:54 AM
@gansub welcome back. Sorry, i fell asleep yesterday.

he really tried very very hard
what i dont understand is this
why python is holding up X windows
can you explain it to me ?
@Serg can you give me the link where you show how to back up your home directory ?
i am going to do a reinstall <SIGH>
i failed
i got thwarted
i am defeated

@gansub will post in a minute.

@Serg @Zacharee1 i never like to lose

A: How to properly copy files from hard drive to USB flash drive in tty4 terminal?

Serg Plug in the device lsblk to find the device name of your usb device. Naming is /dev/sdXY. Where X is any english letter and Y is integer, typically 1. If the device was mounted, you will see the mountpoint, for example: NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT sdb 8:0 1 ...

@gansub well , it's not your problem. The PC just happens to have issues with this wireless card, that's all. Is it possible for you to get a different graphics card ?

@Serg - but how is python install holding back X windows ?
that is the part i can't figure it out

1:59 AM
@gansub i have no idea either. I personally use the python version that comes with ubuntu

heck i event to launch ubuntu forum
to get an answer
a senior Ubuntu engineer sent me questions
and suggestions
none of those worked
yesterday however some bright spots
@AnwarShah - gave his breath to make sure i got my Ubuntu installed
i mean he went out of his way for no reward
he truly exemplifies the Ubuntu spirit
make sure the community benefits
life is beyond the computer
all about human connection

@ByteCommander unless you have any other requests to improving the power-flow-indicator, i would like to tag it and release

lks = le kolo serg?

lock - key - status :p
but i like your idea

2:12 AM
i am sure subconsciously you meant le kolo serg :D

2:27 AM
@Serg you there ?

yes

when I type lsblk i do see the device mounted as sdb1
1.8 T
do i still need to do this step - udisksctl mount -b /dev/sdXY

does it tell you directory ? like /media/user/DriveA ?

@Serg NO it does NOT
so I need to mount it !

@gansub ok, so do the udisksctl step

2:30 AM
mounted on /media/root/Seagate

good, continue

udisksctl mount -b /dev/sdc1
what does this do?

it basically tells Ubuntu "hey, i need to use that disk partition, but i don't want to do a lot of work. do this for me automatically, and tell me what directory you connect to that partition "
@gansub
this is simple way. if we were to do it the other way, we'd need to do more work

but i do not have any sdc1
i have sda which is sda1 sda2 sda3
sorry sda is split into sda1 sda2 sda3
sorry sda5
@Serg

@gansub sdc1 was just example. You need to adjust to real name of your device. What did lsblk tell you ?

2:41 AM
i have sda1 sda2 sda3
should i mount sda1 ?
with that command i get an error
device /dev/sda1 is already mounted at '/'
@Serg

@gansub "/" is your internal hard drive. Tell me all sd* letters you see
is there sbd ?
sdb
sorry
sdb1

sdb1 is for seagate
it is already mounted
right
so i just need to copy now
@Serg
step 1 is plug in device
step 2 is lsblk

yes, now you can copy

step 3 is mount
step4 is copy
question @Serg

yes ?

2:48 AM
how do I know what directory I need to copy to
on the Seagate drive
from directory is my home directory

@gansub /media/root/Seagate This is the same one that you saw when you mounted the drive.
you can also make another directory on the Seagate
for example mkdir /media/root/Seagate/new_directory

can i kill the rsync and restart it ?

yes
ctrl+c

done !
i issued rsync -av /home/gansub /media/root/Seagate/gansub
two years of Ubuntu 14.04
about to bid it goodbye :(
nostalgia .....
when i first installed ubuntu for the first time on August 2014
how happy i was then

My first installation of Ubuntu was 13.04 , 2 years ago. I think it spring of 2014. Then 14.04 came out, but i waited a few months before upgrading.

yeah, i've learned a lot since that time

actually this box came with 12.04
but it was buggy
so i upgraded to 14.04 LTS
UGH it is copying my mozilla cache
what a waste of space !!!

meh, at least you will have all the bookmarks and history :)

yea
is seagate reliable @Serg?

@gansub I don't know. Never used one

3:04 AM
@Serg i was told not move seagate device when copy is happening
crazy things can happen

Yeah , it's not just seagate. I don't recommend moving any device. Doesn't matter if it's seagate or not. If you are copying something, just don't touch any drive
And by touch, i mean touching with hands or other objects

well i almost touched it
then reminded myself

I need to leave for 20 minutes, be back later

sure @Serg

3:34 AM
serg is back

@Sergman

speed is quite good @Serg
we are almost at the end
i have 200 G
it has been an hour

@NathanOsman the real question is , who let those dogs out

Lol.

@gansub impressive, i wouldn't expect 200 G to be copied that fast. Usually takes me several hours

within the form of my enamel, yup

well @Serg i do not know
but it is nearing the letter 't'
so i only got four more letters of the alphabet

hullo

yolo

3:52 AM
you only live once ?

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD No it mean's YOLO Only Live Once. :D

ok

no, it means Yellow-Orange Lion Offspring

A recursive acronym is an acronym that refers to itself. The term was first used in print in 1979 in Douglas Hofstadter's book Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, in which Hofstadter invents the acronym GOD, meaning "GOD Over Djinn", to help explain infinite series, and describes it as a recursive acronym. Other references followed, however the concept was used as early as 1968 in John Brunner's science fiction novel Stand On Zanzibar. In the story, the acronym EPT (Education for Particular Task) later morphed into "Eptification for Particular Task". Recursive acronyms typically form...

it means Yellow Orbiting Living Missile

3:56 AM
YOLO means YOLO.

yolo is life.

It can also mean, Young Ostrich Loves Oranges

@Serg I am done @
maestro !
i only have 136,970,524,981 bytes !
so only 136 gigs !

@gansub very well , now you can either shutdown or unmount the drive.

4:01 AM
speed of transfer was 38 389 695 bytes per second
is that a lot ?

38 MB/s. That's about what you'd get from a decent flash drive.

what is a flash drive ?
is my seagate 2T disk a flash drive ?

////

@gansub flash drive is another term for USB pen drive, american english

@Serg so my 2T B disk is slower than a USB pen drive

4:06 AM
@gansub I wouldn't think it's slower. Fairly decent

@Serg disk unmounted
can I unplug it now ?
is my data safe ?

yup, you can safely unplug

now i need to reinstall OS right ?
goodbye to two years
farewell to 14.04
any steps before that?

nope , i don't think so. Go ahead and reinstall

@Serg after breakfast
thanks again !

4:11 AM
@gansub you're always welcome. Sorry you're having so much trouble with this computer

@Serg in your own way you embody the spirit of Ubuntu
ready and willing so eager to help
a stranger

Well, that's what ubuntu is all about

breakfast is cookin'

@Zanna Not a big issue. I agree with the answer. but past tense of the verb confused me. May be it's because, I'm not a native English speaker
@gansub Well, I would use some other hacks to make that issue gone, including manually editing /var/lib/dpkg/status. But I didn't in your case, since the communication between us was very laggy and thought A clean install with be better anyway
I am surprised, the bounty questions aren't attracting much as it was before i left

4:58 AM
Does anyone know the real name for this vulnerability?
No wait I think I got it security.stackexchange.com/questions/108428/…. LOL!

it was in the same question you asked, right?

the comment was...

Which title is better What is happening now with the Grub backspace key security vulnerability? or What is happening now with the Grub CVE-2015-8370 vulnerability?

better for what?

5:04 AM
the post

what's the problem with current one?

I want to change the title to the really name of the vuln.

@AnwarShah good morning
about to reinstall here

@gansub morning
@HenryWHHackv2.0 don't know. use anything you want

do I just insert the CD ?
should i shutdown and then install the CD

5:07 AM
@gansub no. put the CD somewhere near the PC and it will be read by magic

:-)
ok
@Serg when I do a lsblk I see sda5 having 3.9 G
how do I find out what directory it points to ?
@AnwarShah ?

hmm
need to go

i need to backup sda5 as well

will be back

how soon ?

5:24 AM
@gansub lsblk should tell you , let me show you example
$ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda      8:0    0 111.8G  0 disk
`-sda1   8:1    0 111.8G  0 part /
sdb      8:16   0 465.8G  0 disk
|-sdb1   8:17   0     1G  0 part
|-sdb2   8:18   0   100M  0 part
|-sdb3   8:19   0   128M  0 part
|-sdb4   8:20   0  48.8G  0 part
|-sdb5   8:21   0  10.4G  0 part
`-sdb6   8:22   0 405.3G  0 part /mnt/HDD
my /dev/sdb6 is connected to /mnt/HDD directory , This means it's mounted

in my case it says sda 5 3.9G part[SWAp]

/dev/sdb5 is not connected anywhere , no directory

do i need to back it up?

@gansub that's your virtual memory. Swap is part of hard drive that is used in case your RAM is all used up. You don't need to back it up

aaaaah ok
so now @Serg
can i shutdown
i have inserted the CD into the CD drive
can i shutdown

5:26 AM
yes, you can
don't forget to remove Seagate drive

yes we can
i remoed it
s/remoed/removed/
@Serg shutdown
starting
how do i acess the CD ?
i got the grub menu now

@gansub power off access the DVD, keep hitting F8 or F12 after computer starts
sorry my firefox is lagging a lot right now

@Serg i get two options
LEGACY BOOT
and UEFI BOOT

um . . . LEGACY

under that i have two options
P0 and P4
P4: TSSTCORP DVD+-/RW

5:32 AM
no idea what that is
oh . . .
P4
, this is your dvd drive

it is flashing the ubuntu logo
and the six dots are flashing
one after the other
@Serg it is hanging

@gansub just wait, it should start . DVDs are slow

@Serg you are right
I got the INSTALL SCREEN! !!!!
install Ubuntu right ?

yes

it is asking for install third party software for graphics and wi-fi hardware
flash mp3
should I choose @Serg ?

5:41 AM
@gansub is your computer connected to internet ?

yes i just connected
by editing the connection properties

@gansub ok, choose third party software and updates. Theres two checkboxes, right ? so both

one is blanked out
i can't choose it
@Serg now I get an option

Install Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS along side Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
Erase disk and install Ubuntu

@HenryWHHackv2.0 Not everyone is always right. Post an answer if you think it can possibly help the users.
My posts have been downvoted before. But I learned from them. Got better

@Serg But the answer I was thinking about was the correct answer.
I did not post it in time.
:(

@HenryWHHackv2.0 well , if it's exactly the same as the other answer, then don't post it. If it is somewhat different, then sure , post it. OR find similar way to do the same

That has happened to me plenty of times @HenryWHHackv2.0 you will get better at deciding whether to answer or not ;)
hehe your answer to my lock keys indicator question is still waiting for update @Serg ;)
