Remember , I asked you about xrandr script to test ? That was for another indicator. Wanna see it ?

do I? :D
ah why not.

11:32 AM
IT's for switching resolution
There is an appindicator for OS X
so I made its Ubuntu clone :D
well, not really a clone. I don't know their implementation
I'll probably need @Zacharee1 to make me another icon for it

Q: Startup shell script when executed shows "windows10vm.sh is already running"

xEightSixSystemsHello I've ran into a problem using a startup shell script for my windows 10 KVM-QEMU virtual machine, it shows when executed: windows10vm.sh is already running The GNU/Linux distro that I'm running is Kubuntu 15.10 and here's the startup script taken from this tutorial that I followed https:/...

@Rinzwind: I have some friends there I've lost contact with, I must find their details to make sure that they are safe.

user136984
It's very sad what has happened.

user136984
Do they not have technology there to detect coming quakes?

@ParanoidPanda Probably they do but there's probably a reason for it. Structurally unsafe for earthquake buildings, probably not enough tech watching earthquakes ( because it might not be as frequent there )

user136984
11:42 AM
Yes, I don't think anyone expected it to happen there.

typical , nobody expected Sichuan earthquake either

@Serg nathan can make you a flag :D
@ParanoidPanda we do in the whole of Europe.
In Italy and Greece they have a rather peculiar ruling: if a house is not finished they do not have to pay any (Greece) or a lots less (Italy) tax. So often houses are not built well so they can claim it is not finished :-P

damn floor boards and bed. I could move quietly without anyone noticing. But these boards just give away everything

Who are you creeping up on @Serg ?

Oli
@Serg You get the power of flight at 100k
6

11:58 AM
@Arronical ain't creeping on anybody, pretending to hide from my father. . . .parents are rather critical of my night owling habits
Welp, i hope one day I'll reach those flight powers
cuz right now, I'm crawling

i.imgur.com/UNf1rOT.png is it possible to auto-hide the top system bar? I have a small screen and space is space

@caub not possible, only can be made transparent. Switch to openbox desktop if you want more screen real estate. but it's rather minimalist

ah ok thanks
damn Unity

>.> Unity ain't that bad. . . .well. . . .at least i came to like it
wut???

Unity isn't bad .. it is just too minimal

user136984
12:13 PM
@Serg: Well, if you are really crawling, I hope you're using your phone to talk to us and lot your laptop, or worse, tower-block... :D

@ParanoidPanda yes, phone it is, so expect my spelling to suck :D

user136984
12:27 PM
Facebook has recently stopped adblockers from working properly on their site. But I just block all third-party scripts that aren't needed and that seems to do the trick! >:D

@caub If Apple does it, it must be cool, don'tcha know.
Also, no need to switch to openbox. Pretty much any other desktop environment should let you do that.

and the icon

@CodeX thanks. Zach made the icon.

Looks good

@CodeX if you have any indicators ideas or requests, let me know. Lately i like making those

12:43 PM
@Serg Sure : )
A youtube music player ..where I can paste a link of playlist and it can continue playing music (audio) ?

Mmm, could try. I've not done any web coding yet, so don't know how that would go

They have also started importing it from Poland in some places, but there is now a Russian company here actually producing it here.

Oli
Somebody needs to read the "command-line vs terminal vs shell vs ..." Q&A.

Q: What is the intent of the AskUbuntu reputation threshold to enable commenting?

Reformed GoblinHere I am, completely new to linux and I don't have any new questions to ask. But I would like clarification on existing questions. So within this system, clearly I have no means to provide any answers, so I don't have a way to participate in conversations unless I wait until I have new questions...

@Oli not me! no not me!

@anwar I will be leaving soon but I have a bit of time if you are there.

but someone actually approved the edit
so boot = dual-boot one-third confirmed

>_<
good thing there's a high requirement for suggesting tag synonyms

@caub Yeah, me too.
And hello yourself, nice to see you in a new place ;)

@caub That panel usually is for program menus that are maximized, and for appindicators. Speaking of which, I am taking requests for appindicators. MAybe there would be one that made you reconsider getting rid of that panel ? How about this one for instance github.com/SergKolo/launcher-list-indicator
@Zacharee1 have you heard Mark's song about space ?

2:56 PM
@Serg Oh hey, I don't do unity but that looks like a really useful tool! Nice one!

@terdon Yup, a lot of people found it useful and it's even been featured on webupd8 :D

Oh, is that the one that was featured? Great idea, anyway.

I actually have to give big thanks to @Seth because originally he threw me an idea for mouse profiler indicator, and then I was like . . .wait a sec, I can apply this same code to Unity launcher

seth behind all things good and bad, as usual

But the one I really want to get working is magic button. I kind of "borrowed" that idea from Byte . . . he wanted to make power key do stuff. I came up with indicator idea

Q: Accepted Netflix answer is incorrect

Jorge CastroIMO we should remove the accepted answer, the 2nd most-voted answer is clearly more correct and supported by Google/Netflix. How can I use Netflix on Ubuntu?

There's this 1 hour version of Markiplier's space, but the maker of that video just stuffed it with advertisement

3:17 PM
My gravatar is evolving.

meanwhile, my sleep deprived brain is devolving

ouch

what is your gravatar doing @dino ? can it fly yet?

It became violet/purplely.

Q: search for only installed packages using apt

Exostorusing aptitude I can make a search like aptitude search '~i bash' this seems to be an aptitude specific regex. Is it possible to do the same thing using apt or apt-cache without additional commands? apt search '~i bash' is not working.

3:23 PM
oh it's my favourite colour now ^_^

It's not supposed to change pattern like that.

you accessed from another IP address?

No, I don't think so.
It should be hashed based on my email address. Weird.

user136984
@dino: I just got used to your green one! Don't let it change again! :D

I wish I can do that.

user136984
3:34 PM
@dino: Can't you just download the previous one and set it in your SE profile?

What's the fun in that?

@dino what's it like being package maintainer ?

user136984
Well, purple doesn't really suite you... :P

@Serg lots of spam.
I am thinking of reverting back to my older username.

I have this opportunity to pick up an unmaintained project . . . but it's lots of work . . . and a bit of a step above my head

3:36 PM
Ah, in that case, better to pick a project you are very familiar with at the least. You might need to patch some bugs whenever they arise.

Yeah, there's plenty of bugs there
It's not been maintained since what . . .2012 . . . and it is under GPLv3

what package is this?

@dino launchpad.net/drawers Drawers

Interesting project

It's quite popular . . .and has been mentioned on AU a lot
But the maintainer apparently abandoned the project

3:44 PM
Are you familiar with the code base?

user136984
How do I type the Euro symbol on an English (UK) keyboard?

@dino no. I only briefly scanned source code, figured it's in python 2

user136984
It says it's here but I don't know how to access it:

user136984

I believe there are some prerequisites for becoming a package maintainer or adopting an abandoned project.

3:46 PM
@dino would it be easier to fork it ? ( assuming they have github )

@ParanoidPanda I don't know, but if you open vim, press i and then ctrl+k then type =e it will magically appear haha

@Serg yeah that might also be a good idea.
Alt + 0128 (Numspad)

@dino launchpad doesn't have no option for forking there, at least i can't see one

@Serg bzr it and then make it git.

3:51 PM
bzr ? bazar ?

yeah, bzr is the command for bazaar.
Pull the source code from here and then git init, etc.

user136984
@dino: Nothing happens when I do that.

Do you have a full keyboard?

user136984
Yes

With numbers on the right side?

user136984
3:53 PM
Yes, actually it doesn't always do nothing, sometimes it jumps to another tab and annoys me.

@ParanoidPanda just use UTF input

user136984
@Serg: How?

@ParanoidPanda have you tried RightAlt+4? Or RightAlt+E?

Ctrl+Shift+U , then type 20AC
20ac is hex for euro sign in utf

user136984
@Serg: Ah, thanks! That worked! :)

3:54 PM
has to be caps apparently

user136984
How do I get a list of all the possibilities?

$€谢G
@ParanoidPanda there's waaaaay too many UTF characters. Just google them
That's a tattoo, right there

@Serg you can't fork within Launchpad to make a new project.

@ParanoidPanda you don't because brexit and reasons
2

Brexit is the reason.

4:00 PM
always :P

Yeah. If you try, Nigel Farage appears on your doorstep and bludgeons you to death with a huge £.
7

@dino apparently not, but i can make a branch apparently
gosh there is a lot to learn

@terdon lol brings me back memories of a huge S.
@Serg yeah but bzr is awful.

@dino I was kinda thinking of that, yes :)

yeah but these kids won't know the reference of that joke.

4:01 PM
OP from 2012 came back and accepted my answer \ (O_O) / wooooo

user136984
@terdon: Have you seen his new moustache?

@ParanoidPanda Has he shaved it into a £ shape?

A: New users can't create new tags: show a singular or plural message?

Jeff Atwoodhttp://twitter.com/codinghorror/status/1165936105 Dear Next Person Who Opens a Pluralization 'Bug', I will personally come to your house and bludgeon you to death with a giant S But not you. I like you. You're nice.

user136984
@terdon: :D

user136984
You could suggest that to him.

user136984
4:03 PM
But no, not as far as I know.

user136984
He's got a funny looking face, makes me think of kippers. But that moustache is really the final straw...

@dino actually, would that be a good question for AU ? "How do I fork a Launchpad project?"

@ParanoidPanda this one?
user image

@terdon striking resemblance with charley chaplin

Um. Among other, less savory, individuals.

user136984
4:05 PM
@terdon: Oh dear... :D

user136984
Well, he's appearing at one of Trump's rallies now isn't he?

@Serg wat

user136984
@Serg: I read that as a mixture between "snuffling" and "muffin"! :D

you're bluffin

user136984
4:08 PM
Ho ho :D

And now you're huffin'

I wish you'd be shuttin'

user136984
And I'm luffin'.

@Zacharee1 10/10, best comment of de year. don't be ruffin my feathers

@edwinksl you should still ask it

4:16 PM
hello

hi

Hi

java -jar tips. jar

and in other news, i am 33 points away from command line badge, and 50 from 29k. woohoo! imma get that badge back!

anyone knows where I can learn a bit more about kernel and its modules? But from a more beginner friendly starting point? Most articles I read about the kernel are a bit advanced and I'm a little lost as where to start before getting to those

4:26 PM
eh, very dark area for me. I'd say look into Linux system programming books first.

are you fing re**ded??? i mean i knew that this website is the worst of linux. wtf, i cant ask a question that might have a common solve? "he doesnt know how to change wallpapers, but he is using debian. this is for ubuntu questions only, yes it's a similar method, but we dont care" — flat badonkadonk 6 mins ago
idiot found

I guess his avatar was a hint..

@flatbadonkadonk not only is this webpage "the worst of linux", it also has the unmitigated audacity to expect basic civility from the people using it! You are very welcome to leave now, but if you chose to stay, you will also have to be civil. — terdon ♦ 1 min ago

@IanC kernel.org :=)

I'd have recommended he ask on Unix & Linux instead but, somehow, I'd rather he didn't.

4:32 PM
and nothign regarding kernel is beginner friendly

He not only calls this website is for the worst of linux but he also uses it!

Nobody tell him it runs on Windows. Truly, the worst of Linux.

good one
ah well I got to downvote >:)

@Serg @Rinzwind I don't know, I just wanted to be more ensured of what I'm doing on some lower level tasks (installing driver modules, having another patched kernel installed, etc), maybe it doesn't require knowing much about the kernel code itself, but at least knowing better how the system works

4:38 PM
uhuuu, thanks @Rinzwind!!!

that should be a good starting point

@IanC installing is probably easy part, therefore prepackaged deb files, gou can clone some wifi modules on git. Tweaking kernel may be more complex

that last one is pretty detailled

ok, i need to pass out before i pass out
bye guys

4:39 PM
bye @Serg, see you later!
@Rinzwind, one of the things I was having doubts about was about some driver modules installation for example. Say you have a driver already installed. Then you download a new driver module, make; sudo make install; modprobe NAME. First I've no idea where the module actually is compiled to (directly to the /lib/modules/uname -r maybe?). Second, just modprobing the driver wouldn't actually make ir conflict with the currently installed?
I just hate running commands without strictly knowing what they are doing (and how to undo them if things go south :p)

@edwinksl nuke it!

with my very scary CV :D

4:54 PM
@edwinksl is that spam?

Q: How to disable java update popup “Your Java Version is out of date” on Linux OS

user186524I want to disable java update on linux os, I'm using oracle java and tried to disable update check from "Java Control Panel" but control panel doesn't have "Update" tab as windows java control panel does. Is there any other way around? thanks for help.

5:35 PM
when will I learn not to write the answer in a comment?

never everrrrrr?

hehe probably
1. person A asks for more info from OP.
2. I comment pointing out problem with script
3. person A writes blablablah I am a professional and here a 4 ways I would do what you are trying to do, but misses the original problem
4. my comment gets an upvote
5. the blablabla answer is edited to include the point from my comment
6. blablabla answer gets accepted

link to question please

oh definitely :D

5:48 PM
you are always here! (which is good)

i am always online but it doesn't mean i am actually here :P

Soon the kids will be back at school and I will be gradually back at work : / No more AU 24/7

the future of UK is in your hands
the kids need you

lol ^_^

at least you don't have to deal with senior systems engineer

5:51 PM
hehe <3

seriously though, i don't see why that was relevant to the question. i might edit out the noise hmm

I am chuckling imagining hilarious rollback
it doesn't even have to happen and it's making me laugh

o.O

that reminds me of a "party game" my mum told me about, I don't even have to play it to crack up hopelessly

i could be too confrontational for my own good... maybe i should chill

5:55 PM
@edwinksl are you me?

it's called "vegetables without teeth" - the entire concept is you have to say the name of a fruit or vegetable without showing your teeth

Just pretend Zanna is your real friend and you will be chill rightaway.

@Zanna easy game when done in a chatbox
carrot
I can even do that with roots :=)

hahahaha @Rinzwind I think that's cheating

6:11 PM
@Zanna seems like it

ah well caught, I didn't try searching earlier as I was on mobile

there are really 2 questions being asked though

yes if they were separate my comment would be the answer to #2 I guess

i hate it when people say crap like "And don't tell me that it's because i'm running 14.04 and not 16.04 because 14.04 is still the majority of ubuntu users."
that's so lame

I VTC the one I mentioned ^^^ bc OP says that /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts don't match
Yeah, it's always quite off-putting when people tell you what not to say in your answer
Oh I see it's not a question... tricky when people self-answer they can write stuff like This Is A Forum and we can't really take issue

6:22 PM
Search for 'tic tac toe' in Google.
And solitaire too.

the AI for tic tac toe is subpar lol

@dino hehe cool :)

@edwinksl Impossible level?

oh i didn't change the difficulty setting :P let's try that now
it will always be a draw
no fun

lol

6:26 PM
I am impossible at tic tac toe

Impossibly good?

hopefully
My gym got fancy new machines and you can play casual games while jogging or whatever... I am getting quite good a mah-jong haha

Zumba mah-jong sounds fun.
Except the part where I don't know either.

hahaha I think zumba mah-jong would be extremely difficult
oh you're a dino-saur again :D

yeah, I don't like gravatar messing up with the identicon.

6:43 PM
the solitaire is pretty difficult

haha I was just going to say room is silent while everyone plays solitaire

i wish there were a minesweeper though

haha me too

7:02 PM
took me 7 minutes to finish easy level solitaire :/

hehe smart... I'm stuck

my second favourite fruit

ah nice
My favourites are those I have already heard of =)
like banana and mangoes.

mmmm mango. But mango in England is rarely good :(

7:16 PM
I wonder where the good ones go because I haven't seen one in a while now.

Maybe not in season? When I was in China, May - June was mango time

yeah, good ones are worth a lot and don't generally reach the domestic market.
whether in season or not :/

and the best ones in China were from India
:(

I wonder if China makes mangoes.
apparently not. Mango is indigenous to S. Asia.
Mangifera indica
Going to bed. Don't want to read mango history anymore.

haha sweet dreams @jokerdino :)

7:27 PM
@Rinzwind lol, sudo isn't even installed or setup on debian
if you set a root password on install looks like

Q: recursively delete all files, empty directories, and directories with files of multiple names under current directory, including current directory

codyc4321I am trying to delete all *.pyc and pycache, and any other silly files languages need to run that i don't want to see. The closest I've gotten is sudo rm -rf **/*__pycache__ answer, which doesn't work deep down the path, and sudo rm -R -f {__pycache__,.*.pyc} which didn't work for pycache ...

@Zacharee1 huh, you are right
