AAARRRRGGGHHH.
Uploading apps to the Mac app store is sheer voodoo.

What is wrong Mr osman?
Mac is crap

If you don't believe me, the answers to this question will help: stackoverflow.com/questions/5265772/…

I do believe you

Since when does Mac use IPAs?

6:52 AM
I wonder why Askubuntu is a hot place for spam questions related to Beauty

@Zacharee1 International Phonetic Alphabet?
:D

iPad/Phone/Pod App :p
The packaging format for iOS apps
besides DEBs (which are for system apps)

The process for uploading is the same.
Product -> Archive
...and then it's supposed to show up in the organizer.
But it doesn't.
And I've threatened it with everything I can think of.

try slapping it with a rainbow trout

Can someone please shoot down the ylmf-pc spam-bot!!!

6:59 AM
ylmf?

wut?
where?
who?

@blade19899 wat

It's a spambot the keeps changing IP adresses when it get blocked.
My oldest server has almost 2 million line of entries in the log files just of ylmf-pc

lol

@ByteCommander That

7:01 AM
lol

When my server crashes it's annoying to pare the log files

Aha... Not my beer.

what has python got to do with a hp printer askubuntu.com/questions/800289/hp-printer-install-fail

Also, any ideas where the crashed.log file exist :D

@Zanna please help me talk some sense into OP about system python ;)

I did comment
* smh *

10k kittens have been sacrificed

oh what's this I have two versions of? Ubuntu is so stupid!

this is orders of magnitude worse than people who install python because they don't realize ubuntu comes with python 2 and 3

7:53 AM
Also most of @JacobVlijm's 'magnifieke antwoorden' don't work without it.

sad day for jacob :(

:'(
Python is AWESOME

why would someone get rid of it?
Could @terdon please use the Off-Topic hammer? askubuntu.com/q/800346/530811

meh, don't ping terdon like that, just flag it

I've just compiled Atril (MATE's pdf viewer) against a newer-than-repo version of Poppler to fix an issue with password protected pdfs, but the process was really dirty... I had to edit the configure.ac. Seems to me like a bug that something was pointing to the wrong definition, but nothing about it on the Github page so thinking it was my bad somewhere... anyway it works & fixed the problem :-S

no harm creating an issue to ask ;)

8:07 AM
yeah I will do :)

"invalid resource directory" - what does that even mean?!?!
I am incredibly frustrated right now.

@grooveplex and everyone else, please don't ping mods for things that the community can deal with.

agreed. let terdon have a break
@Oli o/

@Zacharee1 yeah

8:54 AM
welp goodnight my fellow ubuntu geeks

muhaha the power!

@Zanna oh great
How did you go from 1k to 3k in a month?
I call hax

idk @Zacharee1 I just crouch in the long grass like a lioness and pounce on the easy questions

free time, huh?

gotta go to work now tho :)

9:14 AM
ma power.

@jokerdino and now another mod

lol
Pinging mods for things you can flag is... inefficient

@JourneymanGeek there's some spam from about an hour ago that was deleted, but I think you should nuke it

:p

9:27 AM
I only handled one spammer today. I merely suspended him cause he was a cross site spammer and It would be simpler for me to pass it up to the CMs to nuke em all rather than pinging 7-8 mods

heh

Oli
9:41 AM
@Zacharee1 My question is, what were they doing for the other 23 days?

wut

Oli
You can grind 2K in a week without bounties. It's a slog but I'm sure somebody's done it.

Rinzwind I bet
His goal is 200 a day
wait
that would only be 1400/wk, wouldn't it?

and 600 from accepts?
so 20 answers a week accepted.
Its crazy ;p

yikes

9:48 AM
you can do it zacharee

@NathanOsman script's been dead for a while

10k hype

lel

@Zacharee1 That said, if you can post one answer a day...

@JourneymanGeek that actually gets some positive repsonse
I don't get these spam things. idek what they are most of the time
Like:
> Androx Extreme Thomas Jefferson once wrote "I am a firm believer in luck, and therefore i have found the harder I work, the luckier I attain." Well, the same holds true when try to build muscle.
What?

9:51 AM
@Zacharee1 it also means you arn't scrabbling for answers to post and can put quality into it

If you're gonna spam, get the quote right
@JourneymanGeek yeah
So I think I found a glitch in the SE Chat
Put an @ in and Edity comes up
I think it's a bug with non Latin chars

Oh that's cause his nick is unspellable

ahh

not as bad as that bug where if you pinged a specific user, it would ping the whole room

so it's a feature
@JourneymanGeek I want that one back

10:08 AM
@Serg There are news regarding the axe attack in that German train last night

I really hope no one takes this as an actual tutorial youtube.com/watch?v=uv2xKllptQU

Seems like the attacker was a 17 years old Afghan IS warrior...
They found a hand-drawn IS flag in his bedroom.

Q: How do I free up more space in /boot?

user6722My /boot partition is nearly full and I get a warning every time I reboot my system. I already deleted old kernel packages (linux-headers...), actually I did that to install a newer kernel version that came with the automatic updates. After installing that new version, the partition is nearly ful...

yes?

correct answer has 23 upvotes, needlessly complicated one has 375 :\

huh
I see +9 as the second answer

10:25 AM
Is it actually true that autoremove will delete old kernels?

although my votes are all out of order

I don't have access to any system where I'm allowed to run this at the minute

@StefanoPalazzo I don't remember
lemme run some upgrades on mine

Q: I have to delete some stuff from /boot to make updates

JoergWhen i do my updates, the /boot folder is always full with old stuff... So, after a while, I can't make any updates/upgrades anymore, because the /boot folder is full. I have to delete some stuff from /boot via sudo aptitude remove ... I also have to remove from time to time my old headers and ...

Asking because of this ^

I saw that one
as the dupe message might indicate :p
@StefanoPalazzo ^

10:34 AM
@StefanoPalazzo Autoremove usually removes some old kernels, but not sure on what criteria it bases its decision which ones to remove and which ones to keep. The behaviour seems inconsistent or at least too complex to understand for me.

I think it just removes incremental updates and not different versions?
not sure

11:00 AM
7 hours

I think it removes packages that were automatically installed (i.e. as a dependency of another package) and where the corresponding package has been removed in the meanwhile
So linux-headers-9.0 is a dependency of linux-headers, then linux-headers changes and the old one isn't referenced anymore. I think.
@Zacharee1 yeah that looks good
looks like it does remove them. A couple of comments claimed otherwise.

11:22 AM
??????? "but in ubuntu I cannot select multiple files using Ctrl." askubuntu.com/questions/800434/…
@Zacharee1 ^^^

Lol
@StefanoPalazzo well that does follow the logic of autoremove: remove packages that are no longer linked as dependencies and aren't standalone programs.
So apparently VZW will go GSM in 2019
Or thereabouts

@Zacharee1 I know. right? Maybe his keyboard is broken.

And apparently introducing 5G next year, which doesn't make much sense.
@AndroidDev I inferred he could do it in Windows, but idk
Brb

Oh, the SD beat me to it :(

11:38 AM
@Rinzwind Do you have qTox?
@Fabby get online in qTox!

nope

@Rinzwind I'm searching for a Linux System Administrator course, in the Netherlands. I found some online, but not sure if they're 'good'. Can you suggest me something?
I think I asked this years ago, but forget what exactly you suggested me -_-"

I learned it all mysql :+)
But there should be one here near me.
LPI1?
@blade19899 ^

12:02 PM
@Rinzwind Thanks!!

that site has a few more :)

12:15 PM
aaand I just started @Rinzwind's journey to 200 rep today

12:39 PM
on my (simple) system autoremove removes all but the two most recent kernels (that's including the current one), updates grub and removes everything relating to the old kernel(s) from /boot /lib/modules /usr/src (the headers) and /var/lib/initramfs-tools. I've checked because I'm a clean freak ;)

12:53 PM
@Zanna huh. I thought it kept some of the older builds. Like if I had some 3.13.x-xx and some 4.2.x-xx (or however they're numbered), it would remove the older -xx versions, but keep the major ones.
The title on that video is (purposely) misleading btw
5 hours

Oh maybe :) I can't test that atm
5 hours?

doomsday

it kind of annoys me when people are overly like 'oh it's science and if you don't agree you're stupid'... I read this brilliant set of essays recently by John Berger about creationists & neo-Darwinists... that they are like 2 groups of 7 year olds who found a bunch of love letters in the attic and although they are ingenious 'the passion of the letters is beyond their competence'

wut

like, the biosphere is overwhelmingly complicated, and our tinkerings are primitive, and the effects are unpredictable... and more importantly, who controls GM techology? profit driven corporations who don't care if people get sick or even die as long as they get make megabucks...
this guy's talking about how monsanto GM'd plants to resist their herbicide glyphosate, which has been proved to be highly carcinogenic... but they're fighting hard to be allowed to keep selling that poison

1:04 PM
That video explains all that

And where do you see the relation to Creationists here? o.O

@Zanna Yes, there are extremely good socioeconomic arguments against GM foods. There just aren't any scientific ones. That doesn't mean they're benign, necessarily, only that we have absolutely no evidence that they are not benign.

Huh, what is this??? answers.onstartups.com
Looks like Stack Exchange, but can it be?

I think it was a SE v1.0 site at one point of time.

@ByteCommander I see a 404 error. Are you looking for startups.stackexchange.com?

1:09 PM
later came back to SE when we moved to v2.0 and then discontinued or something.

@terdon sure, I agree with that. But I am passionate about the socioeconomic reasons and about science and I resent 'science' being used to suppress all objections...

@terdon I saw that link above in an answer on writers.se
I wondered what it is, official SE site or a scraper.

@Zanna It shouldn't be, of course. Conversely, I object to people with little or no understanding of either the actual science or even the accepted view of the scientific community using "scientific" arguments to make socioeconomic points.

Startup Businessanswers.onstartups.com

I feel very strongly about the socioeconomic issues surrounding the way GM foods are currently made, but I am also very, very much in favor of the technology as a tool.

1:11 PM
@ByteCommander no special realtion to creationists, it's a quote, but the point of it is that the interconnected systems of ecology are really complicated, and people insisting they understand them is suspect

Oh, @Zanna I was in no way implying that you're one of those people, by the way. I just realized my next to last comment might have been interpreted that way.

sure, what about GM bacteria making insulin? that's awesome life saving tech

Q: lxsession-logout vs lxde-logout

user180394I'm new with lxde, I installed it on ubuntu 14.04 using sudo apt-get install lxde. But the problem I have is that I want to logout without a prompt. I've read some articles about this and they suggested one of these: lxsession-logout or lxde-logout. But they cannot be used to logout without a pro...

Yep.

not at all :)

Q: Is answers.onstartups.com a "Stack Overflow site"?

AshI saw answers.onstartups.com pop up after a Google search. I want to verify that it does actually belong to the Stack Overflow family of sites, and that it isn't some kind of cheap impostor. Can anyone confirm?

One of my favorites was a banana which carries malaria drugs. Instead of getting peo-ple to buy from big pharma every month, have them plant a tree in their village!

one problem about getting GM rice varieties in our country is that the seeds have to be supplied by the companies after every season.

that sounds great (I really hate big pharma)

Hmm. I think it was malaria but I'm not sure. May have been something else, but the principle stands.

yeah that's the worst problem
monsanto want to patent genes

1:14 PM
@jokerdino Yes. That's one of the biggest problems about the current implementation of GM crops. But that's a socioeconomic one and not a scientific one.

@jokerdino Aha, thanks.

most farmers here reserve a percent of their yield for next year but GM seeds can't be done that way.

Yep. Bastards.

yeah, that's super evil
(genetic) information wants to be free ;)

However, there is absolutely no reason for this apart from greed. Scientifically speaking, it is not only possible but much simpler to have GM plants that reproduce normally.

1:16 PM
There are actually very many reasons for opposing it and some of them are super valid in their perspective.

yep^ yep^^

It pretty much eliminates every other varieties from the environment. If there seems any kind of defect, we might not be able to revert back to anything.

@jokerdino Of course there are. Just none that are based on science. Apart from the valid but vague and universally applicable "we might be missing something".
@jokerdino That's just a matter of proper control. And depends on the specific modification made. GM foods are not always invasive or hardier.
They could simply be more enriched in a specific vitamin, for example. That doesn't make them any more likely to survive in the wild than wild type plants.

do you remember the case of trans fat and cis fats?

Oh dear. What about them?

1:19 PM
I can't remember the details of it but the artificially created fat caused some terrible health issues.

@jokerdino Perhaps, but what does that have to do with GM?

But we might not know in advance whether something will turn out to be invasive or wipe out other varieties... the system is too complex to predict what will happen & it's hard to safely test. I don't trust the people controlling the stuff

Those are created by certain methods of food processing as I recall. Nothing to do with GM.

It doesn't have to do specifically with GM. You alter things and you say they won't cause problems but some of them do and that will cause doubts.

@Zanna True, but that's why we have to test. And no, I don't trust the people controlling it either. All I'm saying is that GM technology is not inherently bad. On the contrary, it is one of the greatest and best things ever invented and probably the only thing that can save the world from starvation.

1:21 PM
@Zanna If the process takes 15 years, like the video says, I'm going to guess they grow the plants to see what happens before anything

That it is being misused is not an argument against the technology any more than napalm can be used as an argument against "domesticating" fire.
@Zacharee1 well, actually, since we're talking big business here, they often rush to market without enough testing. That's one of the big problems.

@terdon 15 years doesn't seem rushed. Is it? o_O

@Zacharee1 That would depend on the generation length of the species in question but the video you're quoting didn't mean they test for 15 years. It claimed that 15 years is often how long in takes to go from idea to product. Most of that time is spent trying to get the damn thing to work, not testing.

@terdon ah

Even if it were, if you're producing genetically modified babobab trees or secoyas or other long-lived species, 15 years is nowhere near enough time to see the effect your change will have in successive generations.

1:25 PM
So to completely change the subject, I can't find any articles whatsoever that state IMEIs may not actually be unique. In fact, I had a mod over on the XDA forums tell me they are meant to be unique and that is enforced by the FCC. It kind of makes me worry about my IMEI matching about 4 other Galaxy devices

Sadly, research is increasingly being funded by for-profit organizations that have more interest in speed than safety.

babobab lol
you have one too many B's
(grr, I hate it that the apostrophe there is correct)

I completely agree. Systemd is much better than systemV init
or were you talking about something else :)))

@StefanoPalazzo uhhhhh
hi...
yeah
um
:p

@terdon I love science and I love technology & I agree that GM has brought benefits & has great potential, but I don't think it is needed to save us from starvation - what we need is agroecology (sharing best practice + local knowledge + consciousness of sustainability) and... to feed less crops to livestock animals
oops has the topic changed? sorry... :)

1:27 PM
All switch to vegetables!

@Zanna the problem is that's never going to change. This is like a workaround for one of Microsoft's annoying "fixes" that breaks everything

Anyway, do anyone know of a way to make me prepare schedules for every day in Android?

And apparently it has helped (again according to that video)
@jokerdino like calendar reminders?
or alarms?
be more specific

@Zacharee1 no, like 'Things to do today'

@Zanna There's no single magic bullet. Sadly, sustainable agriculture is (afaik) nowhere near efficient enough to feed the billions on this planet. Let alone the trillions to come. And livestock animals are, after all, a far more efficient food source and closer to the "natural" human diet. If we're to be able to grow enough food not to need animal meat, we're going to need something more than the traditional approaches.

1:29 PM
I want it to make me prepare a diary of sorts in the morning.

that sounds really useful @jokerdino ... isn't there an app??

Google calendar?

@jokerdino S Planner if it's on the Play Store
if it exists
I think it oes

Actually, it doesn't have to make me fix timings.

S-* apps are Samsung-only, I thought

1:30 PM
I want something like the Tomboy's Note of the day feature.

@BharadwajRaju S Health is on the Play Store (obviously without sensor functionality)
@jokerdino I would try Google Calendar
The What's New list says Goals were just added

offline do?

yes

Never used Google Calendar outside of Man City fixtures.

1:31 PM
@jokerdino Apparently Tomboy is available for Android: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.tomdroid. And it's FOSS: launchpad.net/tomdroid

@BharadwajRaju that interface though, yuck

let me try tomdroid

@Zacharee1 That is Android-native UI
(Screenshot was taken on old version, 4 or something)

@BharadwajRaju you haven't used Android in like 3 or 4 years, have you?

nope
I had one but my phone was ancient

1:33 PM
@terdon well if it's not sustainable, then it's not going to work out well hahaha. Agroecology isn't just tradition, it's about flexibility and adapting technology to local conditions
oh and organic farming is lower in yield, but WAY more efficient per input of energy (& carbon emissions)
there is a statistic, the accuracy of which I am uncertain, that for every one person becoming vegetarian, enough food is released onto the world market to feed 11 who are starving...

Because even Holo (4.0-4.4.4) looked better than that
@jokerdino you're not @BharadwajRaju

@Zacharee1 I recognize it as either android of 4.x version, or Samsung's custom UI. I have used Marshmallow.
Love Material design

@Zanna is that because it takes more to feed cattle than human?

It required Android 1.6 and up, so that design could be from Android 1.6
(it's not though)

@Zanna Sorry but that statistic sounds very, very strange. Remember that to be a (healthy) vegetarian means consuming much more actual biomass. As for efficiency, again, that will depend on what you compare it to. GM crops can be orders of magnitude more efficient if done correctly.

1:35 PM
@Zacharee1 It's Samsung and their horrid custom UI

it's probably 2.3, which was a really popular version for some reason
@BharadwajRaju I have a Samsung. It just looks like KitKat

@jokerdino it's the length of the food chain. only about 10% of the energy can be passed from one level to the next

TouchWiz, to be clear

@Zacharee1 Mine looks like that (but with a blue accent).
At any rate, it uses native widgets

@Zanna I think that might be exaggerated, but I did see a video on how everyone becoming vegetarian could actually end up being helpful
@BharadwajRaju what makes me think it's older is the 3D look of the top bar. Even Samsung's stuff isn't 3D anymore

1:37 PM
hmm, not liking Tomdroid.

Ahh yes it's possible GM could be more efficient, I'm comparing organic farming to industrial scale farming with pesticides etc, that pays no attention to soil health

Mine is :(

yet it still somehow looks like KitKat, even though Nougat is about to be released

I tried RTM but the features I would like are under paid.

@Zanna remember that organic farming is also using GMOs, if we want to be technical about it

1:38 PM
@Zanna shoot, your agenda is showing.

> RTM

Forgot an F :)

@jokerdino root, get Lucky Patcher, emulate InApp purchases, prevent profit

@BharadwajRaju remember the milk

wut

Ah I see
@jokerdino How was tomdroid?

1:39 PM
Tehble

@Zacharee1 RTM = remember the milk
an app

I figured it out :P

I think I want a todo manager with recurring tasks

@jokerdino just do GCal
Or use the Clock app to set an alarm with a note

Could someone running Unity confirm that this answer is irrelevant to Unity and only refers to Windows please?

1:40 PM
GCal reminders are probable better though

@terdon As someone who remembers Windows, yes

@terdon that's Windows for sure

Unity's top panel is still at the top, IIRC

@BharadwajRaju That just means it applies to Windows though. I want to be sure it doesn't also apply to unity.

It does not

1:41 PM
"Remind me to read newspaper" daily.

On GCal?

Yeah

Cool, thanks

@terdon Such concepts of 'Power plans' are Win-only
Answer deleted, I see

I think my cat @HackToHell would have a splendid solution.

1:42 PM
what

HackToHell: hkgjhdfhgjkdkfsghlh

@HackToHell do you know of a task manager for Android which can do recurring tasks?

> my cat
o_O

@jokerdino check out Tasker

@Videonauth not in that way

1:44 PM
looks interesting
wait 200 bucks

@jokerdino it's $3 o_O
or is this rupees or whatever?

@Zacharee1 jokerdino (and me) are Indian, which means Rs. 199.99

so much money

@jokerdino Aptoide?

1:46 PM
@jokerdino there's llama
that's not as good as tasker tho
tasker is the big daddy ^_^

going to try llama and if needed, smuggle some money for tasker

what do i do with tasker, running a clean up process, switching my phone from wlan to mobile internet as soon it looses the wlan access and switching back (probing all 5 minutes) to wlan as soon im back in range, turning off sound at night etc

I dont even know if I want to automate things.
All I really wanted was to have a todo list which supported recurring tasks.

You need root for most of the operations, if that helps your decision

I can't handle root.

1:48 PM
@jokerdino just use Google Calendar. You can set the reminder to be daily

@jokerdino Try SwiP
FOSS Tasker clone
@jokerdino You can, think of it as sudo :P

Q: Damage by chown command at /

FoufoutosI was careless for just a second and managed to type (being logged as root): chown foobar /* chown foobar /*/* What is the possible extend of the damage, and how can I revert it?

this again? ^

What again?

chowning or rming root

1:56 PM
How can you change owner of root? Or rm it? (As if it was a file)
or /root ?

root as in /
and how does one carelessly type those two commands in?
like, what was the plan?

Additional space: sudo chown -R 123 / home/bharadwaj/
such things happen
