I've just compiled Atril (MATE's pdf viewer) against a newer-than-repo version of Poppler to fix an issue with password protected pdfs, but the process was really dirty... I had to edit the configure.ac. Seems to me like a bug that something was pointing to the wrong definition, but nothing about it on the Github page so thinking it was my bad somewhere... anyway it works & fixed the problem :-S

I only handled one spammer today. I merely suspended him cause he was a cross site spammer and It would be simpler for me to pass it up to the CMs to nuke em all rather than pinging 7-8 mods

My /boot partition is nearly full and I get a warning every time I reboot my system. I already deleted old kernel packages (linux-headers...), actually I did that to install a newer kernel version that came with the automatic updates. After installing that new version, the partition is nearly ful...
When i do my updates, the /boot folder is always full with old stuff...
So, after a while, I can't make any updates/upgrades anymore, because the /boot folder is full.
I have to delete some stuff from /boot via sudo aptitude remove ...
I also have to remove from time to time my old headers and ...
@StefanoPalazzo Autoremove usually removes some old kernels, but not sure on what criteria it bases its decision which ones to remove and which ones to keep. The behaviour seems inconsistent or at least too complex to understand for me.
I think it removes packages that were automatically installed (i.e. as a dependency of another package) and where the corresponding package has been removed in the meanwhile
So linux-headers-9.0 is a dependency of linux-headers, then linux-headers changes and the old one isn't referenced anymore. I think.

@StefanoPalazzo well that does follow the logic of autoremove: remove packages that are no longer linked as dependencies and aren't standalone programs.

on my (simple) system autoremove removes all but the two most recent kernels (that's including the current one), updates grub and removes everything relating to the old kernel(s) from /boot /lib/modules /usr/src (the headers) and /var/lib/initramfs-tools. I've checked because I'm a clean freak ;)
@Zanna huh. I thought it kept some of the older builds. Like if I had some 3.13.x-xx and some 4.2.x-xx (or however they're numbered), it would remove the older -xx versions, but keep the major ones.

it kind of annoys me when people are overly like 'oh it's science and if you don't agree you're stupid'... I read this brilliant set of essays recently by John Berger about creationists & neo-Darwinists... that they are like 2 groups of 7 year olds who found a bunch of love letters in the attic and although they are ingenious 'the passion of the letters is beyond their competence'
like, the biosphere is overwhelmingly complicated, and our tinkerings are primitive, and the effects are unpredictable... and more importantly, who controls GM techology? profit driven corporations who don't care if people get sick or even die as long as they get make megabucks...
this guy's talking about how monsanto GM'd plants to resist their herbicide glyphosate, which has been proved to be highly carcinogenic... but they're fighting hard to be allowed to keep selling that poison
@Zanna Yes, there are extremely good socioeconomic arguments against GM foods. There just aren't any scientific ones. That doesn't mean they're benign, necessarily, only that we have absolutely no evidence that they are not benign.
@terdon sure, I agree with that. But I am passionate about the socioeconomic reasons and about science and I resent 'science' being used to suppress all objections...
@Zanna It shouldn't be, of course. Conversely, I object to people with little or no understanding of either the actual science or even the accepted view of the scientific community using "scientific" arguments to make socioeconomic points.
I feel very strongly about the socioeconomic issues surrounding the way GM foods are currently made, but I am also very, very much in favor of the technology as a tool.

@jokerdino Yes. That's one of the biggest problems about the current implementation of GM crops. But that's a socioeconomic one and not a scientific one.
However, there is absolutely no reason for this apart from greed. Scientifically speaking, it is not only possible but much simpler to have GM plants that reproduce normally.
It pretty much eliminates every other varieties from the environment. If there seems any kind of defect, we might not be able to revert back to anything.
@jokerdino Of course there are. Just none that are based on science. Apart from the valid but vague and universally applicable "we might be missing something".
@jokerdino That's just a matter of proper control. And depends on the specific modification made. GM foods are not always invasive or hardier.
They could simply be more enriched in a specific vitamin, for example. That doesn't make them any more likely to survive in the wild than wild type plants.
But we might not know in advance whether something will turn out to be invasive or wipe out other varieties... the system is too complex to predict what will happen & it's hard to safely test. I don't trust the people controlling the stuff
@Zanna True, but that's why we have to test. And no, I don't trust the people controlling it either. All I'm saying is that GM technology is not inherently bad. On the contrary, it is one of the greatest and best things ever invented and probably the only thing that can save the world from starvation.
@Zacharee1 That would depend on the generation length of the species in question but the video you're quoting didn't mean they test for 15 years. It claimed that 15 years is often how long in takes to go from idea to product. Most of that time is spent trying to get the damn thing to work, not testing.
Even if it were, if you're producing genetically modified babobab trees or secoyas or other long-lived species, 15 years is nowhere near enough time to see the effect your change will have in successive generations.
So to completely change the subject, I can't find any articles whatsoever that state IMEIs may not actually be unique. In fact, I had a mod over on the XDA forums tell me they are meant to be unique and that is enforced by the FCC. It kind of makes me worry about my IMEI matching about 4 other Galaxy devices
@terdon I love science and I love technology & I agree that GM has brought benefits & has great potential, but I don't think it is needed to save us from starvation - what we need is agroecology (sharing best practice + local knowledge + consciousness of sustainability) and... to feed less crops to livestock animals
@Zanna There's no single magic bullet. Sadly, sustainable agriculture is (afaik) nowhere near efficient enough to feed the billions on this planet. Let alone the trillions to come. And livestock animals are, after all, a far more efficient food source and closer to the "natural" human diet. If we're to be able to grow enough food not to need animal meat, we're going to need something more than the traditional approaches.
@terdon well if it's not sustainable, then it's not going to work out well hahaha. Agroecology isn't just tradition, it's about flexibility and adapting technology to local conditions oh and organic farming is lower in yield, but WAY more efficient per input of energy (& carbon emissions) there is a statistic, the accuracy of which I am uncertain, that for every one person becoming vegetarian, enough food is released onto the world market to feed 11 who are starving...
@Zanna Sorry but that statistic sounds very, very strange. Remember that to be a (healthy) vegetarian means consuming much more actual biomass. As for efficiency, again, that will depend on what you compare it to. GM crops can be orders of magnitude more efficient if done correctly.
Ahh yes it's possible GM could be more efficient, I'm comparing organic farming to industrial scale farming with pesticides etc, that pays no attention to soil health
