although not by much

user136984
There is going to be the first point release of 16.04 this coming Thursday, but what exactly does that mean for us already running 16.04? Will it just be like a regular update which takes us there or does anything special need to be done?

ban me!

@ParanoidPanda it's just a package upgrade

pretty sure it is just a regular update

Like every .x release

9:12 PM
@Serg hmm I wont worry .. I am just here for few days .. you will be spending your life with him .. you should worry

agh

Good grief, no !

but i am proposed-master-race xD

wut

@edwinksl how those proposed updates are working out for ya ?

9:14 PM
PROPOSED update
how to install php cli only

magic

I don't believe in magic

im tired
and when im tired i'm angry
AAA

Good to know that

Magic is just people Apple-ifying normal things

9:16 PM
@Serg so far so good. i have yet to file bugs though since my system is stable despite being on proposed

Apple-ifying ? we bring the best of hardware and software

To Mac or not to Mac, that is the question

user136984
When are ISIS attacks every going to end?

user136984
Do you think they'll just quieten down after a while like the IRA, or it will get bigger than that?

@ParanoidPanda when those funkers are exterminated like wild animals

9:20 PM
@CodeX making stupid things like 3D Touch seem like an actual feature that's exclusive to iOS

to end ISIS they need to send ground soldiers

user136984
They do, but currently the only person who'll probably do that will be Trump... And I'm not sure that's such a good idea...

yeah we at apple patent everything and its always the best

user136984
Plus, even if they are destroyed there, there will still be extremists in our countries.

it seems to be the only solution

9:21 PM
@CodeX so how do i get sweet job at Apple ?

user136984
They can never be truly defeated until they change their minds.

by sleeping outside apple's show room everyday ..you will prove us how much you like apple ..after 10 years we will give you a job

@ParanoidPanda there have been other radical groups but none of them has done this many attacks in Europe and in the US

they can be
though many innocent people will die during that process
I am thinking ..there should be rules on how much religious one can be

Its not easy to defeat ISIS until they are stop funded by some countries

9:25 PM
@CodeX perfect example of religious discrimination :P

I dont think its funded by countries anymore ..

It is :(

as ISIS is proving threat to everyone .. though individuals would be funding
its not discrimination .. if one suffers from mental issue what do we do .. they have to be cured

they have medical treatment in some middle east countries

I dont believe that

9:28 PM
Well, they sure are funded, we just don't know by whom . . . . And covered by someone. You don't set up a training camp for ISIS in the middle of some country

they were supported by countries .. including US .. but not anymore
no one likes such threat and instability
no government I mean

as I said ..It could be in past but not anymore
one of countries mentioned in the report has arrested a person on charges of funding ISIS
so if the country itself is indulge .. they wont arrest people and deport

How US C1 30 can drop its ammunition in ISIS territory rather than KURDS Strong hold ?

no idea

9:33 PM
@CodeX cover themselves up ? make a show for public ?

@Serg I dont know much about Kurds etc I never read about ISIS and the problem in that detail

user136984
Well, the vote has happened in the UK now for renewing Trident and they are going to do it... Not much help against ISIS though, more likely that ISIS get hold of the nukes...

Its good to hear that Iraq's soldier with Hezbullah Fighters are defeating them and 90% of Iraq is cleared but that's not the issue i dont know why intelligence agencies are not cooperating with each other and stopping them to make any further violence in eastern countries and USA and whole of the world

To decrease my stress level .. I avoid watching news

h3llo

9:45 PM
@Hizqeel totally agree. ISIS has become a threat to everyone, so agencies should cooperate on that. I mean, if they wanted to , they could easily make a grand operation , find those funkers and smoke them

I hereby present this for all of your consideration: isotropic.org/papers/chicken.pdf

@ByteCommander what's in german news regarding the axe attack ?

Q: Unknown runlevel on Ubuntu 14.04, services not starting on boot

ojraskI rent a VPS from a VPS company and run an Ubuntu 14.04 web server there. Recently it had to be suspended by my provider for a while. Ah, I heard that on a side note in the radio news an hour ago...
In the German news they only said something about a man with "Hieb- und Stichwaffen"...

9:50 PM
@Zacharee1 Just talked to my friend on T-mo, he said his service has gotten worse lately..

@Serg But things have gone toooo Far now as recently almost 1K people are missing from INDIA and almost nearly 500 people from Bangladesh where have they gone austerlia USA Europe middle east Asia every one wants to join them I DON'T KNOW WHY? :O

According to BBC its assumed and feared that many have joined ISIS

where? @Seth

Washington

3 people severely injured, 14 more in that train wagon who did not get injured and the attacker got shot while fleeing.

Dropped from LTE/HSPA+ to barely 3G.

9:51 PM
Does he mean 3G service or LTE? @Seth
HSPA+ is not LTE

That's what tagesschau.de said. @Serg

T-Mobile actually phased out HSPA+ (or is phasing it out) to free up the LTE bands

@Zacharee1 I know. At his house he was getting mostly LTE, and a little HSPA+ sometimes. Now he can barely get 3G there.
His house didn't move..

yay for 4g lte :D
i have 4g lte

total 17 people injured . . . . no casualties @ByteCommander ?

9:52 PM
@Seth technically, his house did move, but not in the way you mean :p

-.-

No, the 14 did not get injured, I think. Just shocked by what happened.

idk, maybe a tower got taken out for some reason?

What do you mean by casualties?

casualties == dead

9:53 PM
@Seth He didn't get a new phone, did he?

No, so far only those 3 severely injured ones. If they make it through, there are no casualties.
(according to tagesschau.de again)

ughh
I really don't feel well
I took acetaminophen and ibuprofen (safe to take together) and nada

Huh, what do you suffer from?

Q: Bash scripting [keyboard input needed]

Felipe RojasI'm new in Linux and I'm trying to make my first bash script to improve my work at college. Im working with a software called GROMACS and I'm trying to make a script to perfom a bunch of codes at the same time, but in one of the lines I need needs an input (number) from the keyboard. What can I ...

10:03 PM
no

dammit

I gave you a hint with that message

@Zacharee1

hold on, this will take a moment

read the edit history silly

10:06 PM
did I get it?

finally

yup . . . had to RTFM

took you long enough

opps

Or you could've looked at the edit history on my message
that shows it unformatted

10:07 PM
I could have . . . but i needed to figure it out for myself

sigh
but you didn't
you just looked it up :p

I RTFM'ed
like I should have in the first place

but that's not figuring it out

Can you tell me what exactly exec 3>&1 does in Bash?

10:12 PM
Redirects file descriptor 3 to the same stream as stdout

Exactly my thought, but it seems to work the other way round in this answer askubuntu.com/a/799780/367990 ?

@Serg exactly. You found out what the syntax is but you didn't figure it out

hold on, let me RTFM . . . .

you figured out how to find out though

Ah, wait
exec

10:14 PM
I would have expected that the command to do what the author wants should be the other way round...
He wants to back up the original STDOUT stream to be able to restore it later after having manipulated it.

If command is not specified, any redi‐
rections take effect in the current shell, and the return status
is 0. If there is a redirection error, the return status is 1.

man bash, section on builtins, exec

Yes, I read that in help exec.

serg is a nerd brainy

10:15 PM
But why does that invert the redirection direction?

haha I tested that one too, and I was like, wow this works but I don't get it!

Unix system V book to the resque !

@Zanna It does not really work well though. Set it up and try e.g. lsb_release -a or apt update or man bash.

> The second major use of exec is to redirect the standard input, standard output, or standard error of a script. From inside a shell script , you can use exec to redirect the input to or output from the script

aaaarrrrghhh!!!

10:19 PM
> After a command such as the following , all the input to a script is redirected to come from the file called infile: exec< infile

So far it's clear.

wait , paste uses tabs ???

> DESCRIPTION
> Write lines consisting of the sequentially corresponding lines from
> each FILE, separated by TABs, to standard output.
apparently it does
very clever, mr. steeldriver , very clever

exec 6>&1 # Link file descriptor #6 with stdout.
                    # Saves stdout.
But why does it have to be 6>&1 and not 1>&6 ??

10:26 PM
Redirect file descriptor 3 to stdout, stdout to paste command , then send stdout to file descriptor 3 , and restore it back
Basically rewire where output goes
@ByteCommander it can be any number , it just grabs first available
0,1,and 2 are standard

If I type 6>&1, I would think that it redirects stream 6 and replaces stdout (stream 1) by that and not the other way round.
I know what 0, 1 and 2 are.
Just the tldp example used 6 and I copied that.
Ugh, 79 packages to update! o.O
The following packages will be upgraded:
  bamfdaemon base-files binutils compiz compiz-core compiz-gnome compiz-plugins-default compizconfig-settings-manager
  console-setup console-setup-linux gir1.2-gst-plugins-base-1.0 gir1.2-gstreamer-1.0 gstreamer1.0-alsa gstreamer1.0-libav
  gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad-faad gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad-videoparsers gstreamer1.0-plugins-base
  gstreamer1.0-plugins-base:i386 gstreamer1.0-plugins-base-apps gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly
That looks like the whole Unity DE got rebuilt...

Can anyone recommend me a good Linux and Mac friendly printer? Because my current one requires the installation of Windows software which doesn't work well in WINE...

Do you know why we get that huge bunch of security updates now @ParanoidPanda, oh dear master of the bugs and security issues?

windows....
@ParanoidPanda Use ReactOS.

user136984
10:33 PM
@ByteCommander: I'm not aware of any security ones.

ReactOS is an open-source operating system for x86/x64 PCs intended to be binary-compatible with computer programs and device drivers made for Windows Server 2003. Development started in 1996, as a Windows 95 clone project, which was in 1998 continued as ReactOS with the incremental addition of features of later Windows versions. ReactOS has been noted as a potential open-source drop-in replacement for Windows and for its information on undocumented Windows APIs. As stated on the official website, "The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible...

user136984
There was an apache2 one today, but doesn't seem like it's in your list.

I have an old HP laser printer and an old Brother ink printer, both work flawlessly.

user136984
And they don't require the installation of some strange printer software from a CD coming with the printer?

user136984
I say strange because it doesn't work very well, and is just, well, strange... :D

10:34 PM
Ah, well. All of my updates came from xenial-updates, not xenial-security.

user136984
Everything is where you wouldn't expect it to be.

Anyway, it's a suspiciously big load.

if you hate windows, why not try ReactOS?

user136984
@ByteCommander: If you really want to know what an update is about, why don't you just check the changelog?

uses a little wine

user136984
10:35 PM
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD: Might do... Would be easier though just to find a printer that worked with my current Ubuntu installation...

No, I did not need a CD. For one I had to download a CUPS driver module IIRC, but nothing too special.

@ParanoidPanda check the website

@ParanoidPanda tl;dr

user136984
Ok, I will. :)

10:36 PM
and too many updates

:)
what does td lr mean?

user136984
@ByteCommander: Most of them are packages for the same thing meaning that they mostly all have the same changelog.

I hate MySQL.

user136984
I checked, but there didn't seem to be anything special in the upgrades, just a few bug fixes etc.

10:38 PM
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD too long; didn't read

I'm not really in need to know what changed, I was just curious because of the amount of updates I got in a day.

Oh hang on.
It was my fault.

imagine running your favorite Windows applications and drivers in an open-source environment you can trust. That's ReactOS. Not just an Open but also a Free operating system.

@NathanOsman so question : how complicated is to make deb package ?

Depends what the package is for.
If we're talking a simple Python script, it's quite easy.

yes , we're talking that

If we're talking a shared library with a bunch of dependencies, not so much.
@Serg Okay, it's pretty easy then.
You'll need changelog, compat, control, copyright, rules, and source/format at a minimum.
Some of those files consist of a single line, so it's pretty straightforward.

OK . . . What if I want to rebuild existing deb package because I changed source code of my scripto ?

Are you using debuild to generate the DEBs?

11:27 PM
I don't use anything yet

If so, you just rerun debuild. If not, you should switch to that :D
I highly recommend debuild. Super easy to use.

I'd say it's time for me. Good night all.
