ReactOS is an open-source operating system for x86/x64 PCs intended to be binary-compatible with computer programs and device drivers made for Windows Server 2003. Development started in 1996, as a Windows 95 clone project, which was in 1998 continued as ReactOS with the incremental addition of features of later Windows versions. ReactOS has been noted as a potential open-source drop-in replacement for Windows and for its information on undocumented Windows APIs. As stated on the official website, "The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible...

@terdon @Zanna Remember that question where we wondered why the original file was reported as ASCII text by file and the same file passed through sort showed as UTF-8?
Did you find an explanation already?

@ByteCommander yes I remember it well, but haven't found the explanation

But I did:

but it was the opposite - it was UTF-8 and came out ASCII

$ python3 -c 'f=open("file.txt","w");print(("A"*100+"\n")*1000+"Ö",file=f)'
$ ll file.txt
-rw-rw-r-- 1 bytecommander bytecommander 101003 Jul 15 09:24 file.txt
$ file file.txt
file.txt: ASCII text

$ python3 -c 'f=open("file.txt","w");print(("A"*100+"\n")*500+"Ö",file=f)'
$ ll file.txt
-rw-rw-r-- 1 bytecommander bytecommander 50503 Jul 15 09:25 file.txt
$ file file.txt
file.txt: UTF-8 Unicode text

which made no sense

7:28 AM
Oh, may be. Does not matter.

but I'm still curious about it!

file only inspects the first few kB (somewhere in the range of 50kB-100kB) of the file.

yeah I see what you did, the non-ASCII char is farrrrr away
good discovery!

If it finds non-ASCII characters in this part, it will report UTF-8 (if that matches instead). If the first non-ASCII character appears after this limit, file does not care.

that does explain it
and the non ASCII was sorted to the end

7:30 AM
And the sorting simply pushed the first non-ASCII character more to the end, correct.

NICE WORK!!

o_O

Funny. hidemyass proxy gives me UK google even if do Italian proxy

hidemyass?

hmmm, apparently only UK is available for free version ?

7:44 AM
@Serg there are enough real free proxies around the world, even with tunneling and the like ;) do you google fu again :)

@Videonauth Will do. I'm just exploring , slightly.

:)
sighs well talk to you guys this evening hopefully have to get ready for a doctors appointment :)

Good luck ! Hopefully doc tells you something good

8:05 AM
@Serg Hidemyass is nice, but I prefer cyberghost.
They also don't show you that many ads for themselves... At least the last time I used them.

@ByteCommander whats hidemyass?

a webproxy site.

ooooooOOOOO

@ByteCommander cyberghost.com ?

@Edity You visit their site, enter a URL you want to visit and they show you the site, redirected over their own servers to obscure your own IP and location.

8:07 AM
oh

;) had to make sure

They offer you a free US, Romanian or German server.
They also offer free real VPNs, but only Win, Mac, iOS and Android support their client application which is needed.
For Linux, you would have to use your own client and the L2TP, IPSec or PPTP protocol, but those are available for paid premium accounts only... :-/

so far i am only interested in web proxy , similar to that of hidemyass , that's all

@AndroidDev general concensus: friends do NOT let friends code in PHP @Serg

8:17 AM
Mkay, will remember that
perfect score

haha. I have a round number right now, 2500

Time to add a 5 to the end, don't you think @Serg?
;-)
I have a round 2600 on SO currently.
No other interesting numbers...

Considering that I am a rare visitor on U&L , I won't add 5 any time soon . My main goal is to get my 33k on this site back by the end of the summer

Same here, although it were only 22k...

8:24 AM
lol , not sure if the system is broken or we're that good to have such nice numbers :p

@Edity No. Please do not pray for Nice. The same answer that was given by one of the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists last year applies here:

@Serg Kali is Backtrack. BT was rebranded and Kali was born. (BT is defunct and past life)
That said there's issues with Kali Rolling - last one that worked for me was I think 2

Q: How can i restart automatically a program if it stops running on ubuntu mate?

BrnyHow can i restart automatically a program if it stops running on ubuntu mate? Is there a program for that? must i write the code? how is the easiest way? Thanks.

wondering why my links don't convert to image

Oli
12:58 PM
@CodeX Because they don't have an extension? That or because it's webp.
Or both.

Oli
That URL. It doesn't end .jpg (for example)

yeah the one I am pasting now doesnt have
how did you add that ?

Oli
That's what happens if you wang a ?asdasd=.jpg on the end.

Oli
1:06 PM
(I know it's not a jpeg, now, but that doesn't seem to matter. The browser is still treating it with its mime-type)

Oli
@CodeX Read what I wrote more carefully. You need more than .jpg
I added a querystring. You're changing the core URL.

not sure which part of query I need to change

Oli
2 mins ago, by Oli
That's what happens if you wang a ?asdasd=.jpg on the end.

but end part doesnt have any asdasd
it has "uWY_2jwnk3lNOfVgfXyiNb_2i2VDxaaA6L1d1I195HEZr1KJ2MOyjlKqyOav-exb9dTDIPKU85M=w84‌49-h4753-rw-no"

1:16 PM
@Rinzwind I wasn't the one doing the PHP coding. Wordpress was.

Oli
@CodeX Indeed it doesn't. It's as if I'm adding that whole thing.

@Oli
hmm I still didn't get it ..but thanks for trying to explain

1:48 PM
@Oli Huh, that's cool. So adding ?randomstring=jpg at the end will make it onebox?

Oli
Might need a dot in there, but essentially, yes

Hello :)

.jpg, right. Neat, good to know!
Hi!

Hi @terdon ! I have set up an ubuntu server 16.04 KVM VM and cannot ssh into it from my ubuntu 16.04 desktop - can you help me with this ? :) I tried a lot already ...

Q: Starting additional OpenVPN connection under systemd

ConfusionI have a couple of OpenVPN connections to various servers that are autostarted when I log into my laptop. Other connections, to production servers, have to be set up manually. 3:12 PM
@cl-netbox I can try, but I doubt it. I know very little about networking.
Ah, and I don't have a working VM here. So even less likely to be able to help.

eurobytes.nl just got an A+ on ssllabs: ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=eurobytes.nl
Just saying.... Bye...

3:36 PM
@terdon okay ... thanks anyway ... that is a tricky thing : port forwarding doesn't work as it should and setting up a bridged network also wasn't successful ... so maybe I find a solution accidentally. :)

@cl-netbox Port forwarding? Why? Aren't these on the same network?

@Zanna No need to delete your answer, it was correct and valid. I'd just have left it there...

oh really?
adds nothing
your answer is perfect, no need for mine

But you were faster, so there's no real reason why you would not have the right to leave it there.
Thanks for the compliment though :)

I always delete if I think my answer contributes nothing to the whole question page
ps since you are here, I get strange results using your keyboard shortcuts here askubuntu.com/a/797163/527764
without \n when I paste all spaces & newlines disappear from the text. with \n I get no spaces, but a newline every other word!

3:55 PM
@Zanna Huh? Which command are you exactly referring to?

bash -c 'printf "%b%b" $(xsel -b) $(xsel) | xsel -ib ; xsel -c'

Oh.
Indeed...
o.O
printf strangeness?
Ah, missing quotes!
Thanks for debugging @Zanna :)

any time ^_^ thanks for your much greater efforts in writing it

@terdon yes, but in KVM (other than in vbox) both use the same ip and mac address, so you have to forward another port (e.g. 8022) from the host to the guest port 22 or alternatively create a bridge, because NAT uses the same network address for host and guest. :)

@Zanna Check again please, the answer should be fixed now.

4:05 PM
@terdon This comes close -> unix.stackexchange.com/questions/124681/… ... but unfortunately doesn't work for me. :)
Hi @ByteCommander ! :) Hi @Zanna ! :)

Hi Boxy :)

Hi :)
@ByteCommander aahhh I see
yeah fixed
Maybe Panda fixed it without even thinking...

@Edity Thanks for your well meant advice ! :) @ByteCommander and @SeverusTux already warned me many times ... but unfortunately I enjoy it ... :D :D :D

I already upvoted anyway... sooo useful
aaannnd shortcut done :)

@Zanna Or he did not notice yet...

@Serg @NathanOsman - I found what looks like a ShellShock attempt in my Apache log.... paste.ubuntu.com/19514141

is there a convention that it is better for a question to have as few tags as possible?

no
Add as many relevant tags as possible.

5:16 PM
OK :) That's what I thought... I ask because here askubuntu.com/questions/798864/cant-find-path-to-vimrc-file I think Andrew added relevant tags but they got removed by a later edit

oh him. :/

[ SmokeDetector ] Blacklisted website in answer: Unable to access network err_network_changed by Rajat K Jain on askubuntu.com

@AndroidDev I didn't see anything suggesting shellshock in your paste link. You sure you provided correct one ?

The attempt to run a cgi script in the GET, I guess?

"GET /tmUnblock.cgi HTTP/1.1" 400 0 "-" "-"
@terdon GET message downloads tmUnblock.cgi to the server ?

5:20 PM
I don't really know. As I recall, shellshock would allow the execution of arbitrary code so I guessed that perhaps that's what we were looking at.
I am about as far from an expert on this as it is possible to be though, so take what I say with a mountain of salt.

Well, there's cgi script , that's all we know. There's no indication of what that cgi scrpt is

Q: How to interpret VFS usage chart

MaxI'm monitoring an old laptop running as LAMP server. I have trouble understanding this VFS usage chart (sorry can't include images yet) from monitorix (the monitoring tool I'm using). I don't understand most of the terms I find on the internet, and I don't find a graph like this explained in easy...

@terdon I Googled the line and found this: security.stackexchange.com/questions/68405/…
@Serg
I'm going to wipe this thing (there's hardly anything on it), and REALLY harden it. I'm going to block all IPs not from UK/US/CA/AU. I'm going to set up fail2ban, and bunch of other stuff.

5:47 PM
fail2ban probably will do good job, but if the botnet mafia uses proxies and tor ( which they do ) they can masquerade their IP as anything, even UK , Canada, Netherlands , etc.
@AndroidDev
So blocking specific countries is pointless

@Serg It will prevent a good chunk of malicious people.

lol, trust me - it won't
My server on Digital Ocean gets bombarded by IPs from New York
among others

Q: libobasis5.1-core is missing with apt-get

cl-rWhen I install language pack, libobasis5.1-core is missing: sudo apt-get install libobasis5.1-core ... tells that libobasis5.1-core exists in list, but not in ubuntu bases. Where I can find libobasis5.1-core ? Solution found : incompatibility between Ubuntu packs and LibreOffice ones, use...

I am facing this problem... ^
I've purged libreoffice and re-installed it by pointing it to the correct ppa...
But it still cannot locate that package...

@AndroidDev I've read that link from Security stack exchange site you posted. It says :
> tmUnblock.cgi is a binary CGI executable in some Cisco/Linksys router firmwares
It's for routers
I don't see how it is useful for attacking web servers
