bytecommander speaking the harsh truth

Im just chatting with a friend in Ankara as it looks now the military took over the government

@Serg I had Korean bbq and kimchee stew for lunch.

@Videonauth what is happening in turkey

takeover
takeover by military
first news already rolling in german media as well

8:08 PM
oh lord yet another coup?

yep seems so
he says the military already anounced the takeover
the prime minister accepted the takeover
the news here speak of military jets and helis over the citty and about shots being fired

:31063905 (removed) ?

@chaskes woo ! i love korean bbq, especially bulgogi
my buddy is having oral surgery , wisdoms teeth removal, so I'm gonna be on my phone for couple hours, guys

bulgogi is dope

8:25 PM
Why military takeover ? @Videonauth

because erdoan sucks IMO
but nothing good comes from the use of force

true, military involvement is rarely a good thing
question. How secure is twitter app ? what are potential risks ?

the risk, and the reason why im not using it is that they wanna know my phone number

noted. Probably won't install then .

8:41 PM
thats the reason why i use facebook only in browser on my mobile and twitter same
their apps scouring all your contact list
no way thats gonna happen on my side

@ByteCommander was an irrelevant message so deleted shortly after posted

yeah, I'm not happy thay Facebook announced that you need the app to read PMs on mobile

yeah I annoy all my friends by refusing to use it

Q: Thunderbird suddenly won't let me write emails

denizI'm not sure if it's a problem with Ubuntu Mate 16.04 or a general one. I only know a few weeks ago I upgraded from Xubuntu 14.04, and so installed thunderbird from scratch, and suddenly I can't write any emails, be they new or replies. To be sure, I can download emails and read them just fine....

@Zanna i just open desktop version in my mobile browser. which is very inconvenient, but works somewhat

but now I have this awesome module to the Xposed framework called Xprivacy... idk if it would work on the facebook app, but it allows you to restrict every permission requested by every app, and feeds them fake data like blank contacts list to stop them throwing errors

hi

ih

8:56 PM
Welcome back TheXed
How's your day ? Recovered your stuff ?

I am back? Thought I was still stuck in a revolving circle...

lol

@Serg I did get all my stuff...

stuff?

@Zacharee1 long story...but it boils down to me being locked out of my car 2 days in a row in two very different situations...

8:59 PM
Well , at least that's got done.

@TheXed wut

@Zacharee1 okay day one I lock my self out of my car (my bad)

nice

day two, I laid my keys down on a filing cabinet for a while while I went and did something else, the custodians came by and waxed the classroom...,with my car keys in it...

lol

9:01 PM
@Zacharee1 that was the abridged version.
Oh so not only where my keys waxed in a classroom, but my spare keys where locked in the car from the night before.

sweet :-) but I am glad to report

@Zacharee1 here is the full store...
18 hours ago, by TheXed
Okay so it all started yesterday...

xD

9:23 PM
Do I have to turn off my phone to put a microsd card in it?
I guess not

no
SIM cards, usually

9:40 PM
So what is happening in Turkey at the moment? I understand that there is some sort of military coup?

hey ubuntu fourms is back up

@ParanoidPanda stop with your depressing news. I avoid it for a reason

@Zacharee1 if that really hapens and hes done there this is not depressing IMO this is good

lol

yeah, depends what happens, but Erdogan out is definitely good

9:43 PM
@ParanoidPanda I've following the new the past two hours and as far i can tell nothing sfe the one group claimt they have the power seized and then the other says its nothing lol

claimed*
@IanC o/

but for me it sounds more that erdoan is being done

hello!

hes talking to cnn over phone left the country in his airplane tho

felt asleep here haha

9:45 PM
calls on pblic to go out to sqres and airports
even if the milityry has put a curfew
doesnt sound much that hes in control

oh cl-netbox replied to me
6 hours ago, by cl-netbox
@Edity Thanks for your well meant advice ! :) @ByteCommander and @SeverusTux already warned me many times ... but unfortunately I enjoy it ... :D :D :D
oh dear
@cl-netbox quit before you never will
my dadda-pencil smoked and I convinced him to quit

dudes, how safe is the document reader from ubuntu?

pretty safe

In News : Turkey 'coup attempt' underway

I mean, if you have an pdf which you're not sure about the precedence, can you open it with an easy mind? haha

9:48 PM
if the document is a virus then you're very much screwed @IanC
good to have a back-up antivirus handy

I didn't open it yet, just downloaded it
but it was downloaded from a torrent, can't say it's safe

scan the document
torrents are never safe

was thinking about opening in a VM

remove it
before your computer gets fried

lol

9:49 PM
@terdon oh, instagram. thanks for reminding me.
@terdon John key said : "Our thoughts go with the victims of the france shootings"
@IanC I AM NOT JOKING. once a computer virus fried a cpu.

how did it do it?

cpu overload

@IanC more when, back in time so 1980 to 1990 you could have a virus frie the cpu by overclocking it and even reside in the clocks memory

computer wouldn't respond

user136984
SHA-1 is almost as insecure as MD5 it has been established, so is it bad to sign contents with a SHA-1 signature?

9:53 PM
@ParanoidPanda use at least 512
sha1 is deemes unsecure for aver two years already

@Videonauth @Edity, thats crazy! But very unlikely nowadays right?

most unlikely

still possible but most unlikely

cpus nowadays shut down before they overheat critically

A virus still can cause to remove your windows system files

9:55 PM
@ParanoidPanda, In 2001 there were already papers about SHA-1 hash being broken, like, the theoretical number of tries for a collision is 2⁸⁰, they could do it in 2⁶⁰ I guess

Or in linux- rm no--preserve--root -rf /

It's a good thing that's not the actual command

yes

@Edity, yeah, you would have to reinstall the OS and lose all your unbackuped data, but at least your computer would live another day

yeah

10:00 PM
so, maybe opening the pdfs in a VM? :D

yeah...

did I send a duplicate? there was a msg to retry O.o

yes.

gotta cook some food
man, I used to be a happy guy that didn't know about vulnerabilities in PDF files, can't imagine if I infected my computer before with some infected file haha

simple solution for pdf safety on linux
convert back to ghostscript and then back to pdf

10:05 PM
there are some video files too, but guess the same theory applies to them. They could have something that explored the video player vulnerability, or very unlikely?

no embedded code will survive that

ghostscript? its like postscript?

yep
or to postscript and back

  Easter Chaos

XKCD's and rm -rf / are here. Although this chatroom feels a b...

10:05 PM
for videos run them through ffmpeg

@Zacharee1 I think he will have to overclock it

just a bit

@Videonauth, I'll look for a conversor and do this them :D
ffmpeg is a player? I usually use SM Player
or a conversor?

a conversor

rm -rf /
woops
wrong chat site

10:11 PM
@Videonauth mpeg is a safe video format then? the others could have scripts?

xvid/avi can have scripts flv can have scripts ( adobe zero days, hello again ;) )
and many others but a conversion wont convert the code embedded in the videos so every format is fine
i do that here too
the deal is the convertors dont read the programmcode embeeded they only read the video data and convert this
most embedding is done in the file headers
not in the data itself

ugh chkdsk

Turkey military decided to find Pokemon

10:26 PM
Tor is Firefox?

@Videonauth, cool, I'll do it to the files then, thanks bro!
@Zacharee1 yeah, it's firefox (based on it at least)
sorry, I had to overcome my lazyness and start cooking my dinner haha

@IanC rm -rf / can brick some badly implemented UEFI mainboards beyond repair!
(^ cc @Edity)

ok

@Zacharee1 Tor is a network of servers that pass on web traffic to anonymize its users.

@ByteCommander but the GUI

10:32 PM
tor-browser is a modified version of a Firefox long-term support release.

@ByteCommander, damn, I don't really know what UEFI is (know it has to do with bootloaders) but I already know it's bad news haha
yep, but there are ways to track tor networks apparently, at least big security agencies can

> Tor Browser 6.0.2 (based on Mozilla Firefox 45.2.0)

but I don't think you're using it to commit any international crimes, so you're good haha

@IanC You can not really do that IMHO.

@ByteCommander, you mean tracking someone whos using tor?

10:35 PM
You would have to know and monitor both the entry node and the exit node of the same connection to find out who is doing something and what.

Tor says I can be tracked by maximizing the window

It can not be tracked that way, but two sites getting requests from TOR exit nodes can compare all the browser data they can fetch e.g. through request headers and JS queries. This includes window size.

too tired to understand

A site you visit can find out your browser window dimensions, right?

yeah

10:38 PM
So if you maximize tor-browser and visit site A, they can know that somebody is visiting them through TOR and they can know your browser window dimension.
If you later visit site B, they can know the same.

Q: grep redirection commands

Ron CharlestonHow to use grep to redirect input, output, and input and output at the same time. I have tried many different ways online, and nothing works. I need to know how to do it for an assignment at school

VTC as dupe

Now if site A and site B are related or exchange data or get examined by the same agency, there will be requests found from TOR browsers with a specific unusual browser window size.

yes, don't maximize tor

This can be used to make a profile of the actions a tor user (or at least a small group of tor users) made.

@ByteCommander, that makes sense, the news I read didn't say specifically how the guy was tracked, it can be a variety of 'man error' stuff and not the tor network itself

10:41 PM
They still can not correlate your window size to your real name, IP or location in any way though.

hi i am using ubuntu 16.04 by mistake i unset my PATH var
i was not login as root

@AbhiAdr Welcome!

They can just make assumptions that some specific site visits could likely have been made by the same person.

sorry it was by mistake

if it's in . profile or .bashrc , you can just reopen the shell @AbhiAdr

10:42 PM
he wasn't logged on as root and he unset his path var

close and reopen

what is default path var for non root usr

if your'e bored why not try
:P:P:P:P:

  Easter Chaos

XKCD's and rm -rf / are here. Although this chatroom feels a b...

@ByteCommander so why is Tor blowing it so much out of proportion?

@AbhiAdr default path var is in /etc/profile , do /bin/cat /etc/profile

10:44 PM
okey i will open that

@Zacharee1 blowing what ?

@ByteCommander, theoretically (emphasis on that) could someone use the tor network for purposes other than browsing through websites? say, throw some packages around?

@IanC Yes, but going into depths into the criminal uses of Tor would be infinitely long

@Serg The window size thing

@IanC you mean download or upload stuff ?

10:45 PM
(read: almost every type of cyber crime)

@Serg gasp
downloads!
AND uploads?!?

@Zacharee1 let me do some googling for ya, i had article about it once

there is profile.d folder under etc/ it's the same folder @Serg ?

@Serg, not only that, send packages unrelated to http and get answers
@ThomasW., I bet it takes some expertise to actually do it right? don't think tor creators would open their network for other activities so easily?

Q: How can you be tracked using screen resolution/monitor size in Tor?

AnuragWhenever I maximize the Tor browser, it shows a warning: Maximizing Tor Browser can allow websites to determine you monitor size, which can be used to track you... How can screen resolution or monitor size be used to track a person?

10:47 PM
@Zacharee1 that proportions were probably defined back in the time where people sat in front of 1024x786 CRT monitors...

uh

buddy just had surgery, and yet jumped on his bike and rode off somewhere

@ThomasW. Hey, the official security expert is back. :) Please correct me if I said anything wrong about tor within the past few minutes...

i can give advice but i can't stop stupid

@Serg You said something about teeth earlier, right? Did he get sedated or just a pain killer?

10:49 PM
sedated, like full anaesthesia

1 more close vote for Mint, please: askubuntu.com/q/799130/367990

@AbhiAdr here!

@ByteCommander Proof of Mint?
oh
i can't read
closed

whoa. that guy has humour to ride a bike right afterwards. or simply stupid...

@Edity i did not file PATH for non root user ?

10:50 PM
also wrong tab

*find

hmm

i mean, he is stubborn, so can't do much except tell him "don't do that". Not a fact he will listen

what do you mean by "i did not file path?"

@ThomasW. ibvwwwrojn wefoubwrefew?

10:51 PM
@ByteCommander Don't call me an expert, I know my stuff but I am not an expert heh

im sorry, not good at linux

@Zacharee1 No, the forces of Mordor do not control the lands I am residing in.

but good at windows

i am panic so i was about to write i did not find default PATH var under /etc/profile

:P

10:51 PM
also, good news people ! i was digging through my old VM shared folder, and got my qtox profile back

@ThomasW. wdouinwwrg wrgwhrguwrg...

will set up qtox tonight maybe

ANYWAYS

@Serg Good News, Everyone!

10:53 PM
what will be default PATH var values for non root ubuntu 16.04 ?

try link above

@ByteCommander I don't see anything wrong with your analyses, but monitor size on its own won't leak truly identifying information to the 'other parties' just by the monitor dimensions
patterns over years maybe can point at it
normally you'd ID someone by behavior patterns, as I understand the general process of identifying people <--> monikers
shrugs
most of that stuff I know is from watching TV shows heh

@ThomasW. Probably still more of an expert than the entire room together... Maybe.

shrugs

okey , i by mistake unset my PATH var of non root user , i will get solution from that link right txs @Edity

10:55 PM
@ThomasW. You're an amateur expert. No degrees (AFAIK?), but you know everything about it.

@AbhiAdr i think... sorry im linux noob

secret expert

@Zacharee1 I don't know everything about it, but I know a lot about a lot of things :P

@ByteCommander but does he use Tor with the default size?

10:56 PM
he who?
I usually don't, I have to admit.

he Thomas

I use it on a 42inch TV screen when I need a full screen

heh

Mostly I use TOR Browser only to watch GEMA-locked YouTube videos...

But 1080p is a really common resolution now. I feel like Tor is making it worse for the people who want to maximize

10:57 PM
but I also have used it on default size but also larger than default by resizing

Having a 1080p anyway as well.

@ByteCommander it works for videos for you? It's really slow here, even for websites

Just tell it to use a "New tor circuit for this site" oftee enough until you have a reasonably fast path.

oh
thanks

Some nodes are really slow, if nothing goes on that's the button to click.

10:59 PM
so does everyone who uses Tor become a node or is it an opt-in thing?
or is it something else?

you have to want to run a relay node to relay traffic
and you have to really want to be an exit point to run an exit node

good

run tor on your computer, you're just an entry node for localhost
