Goals for 2017, double my rep

other goals for 2017: double other peoples rep by voting more

Agreed ^

@Seth you can start with 208574! :D

Although we probably should vote within reason. I don't want shog bring me down to 21k again

@KazWolfe you only have 644 votes?

4:14 AM
yeah i do.
i need to vote more.

Moar inducators, moar scriptz,moar stuffs

@Serg WolfScript?

@KazWolfe weren't you going to make that ? Python and Java crossbreed ?

@Serg i can always use help
y'know, having never designed a language before.

Neither have I designed any language.

Q: Learning to write a compiler

AntonPreferred languages: C/C++, Java, and Ruby. I am looking for some helpful books/tutorials on how to write your own compiler simply for educational purposes. I am most familiar with C/C++, Java, and Ruby, so I prefer resources that involve one of those three, but any good resource is acceptable.

well... crap.

Let's just say , I am still a giant n00b. I passed C with A on 3rd try say 1.5 years ago. Learned bash/ksh and python. In fact, how long it's been since i've started learning python ? Like less than a year ?
sure i coded way back in middle school in Turbo Pascal , but . . . I remember diddle jack from that time, and never made anything practical with it
Also took Visual Basic like 3-4 years ago. It was pain, I remember. Nobody could complete the final project except for couple folks

god, visual basic.
don't mention that sin in this chat ever again.

Yeah, for whatever reason it's a requirement for our Electrical Engineering program

@KazWolfe I've got thousands of lines of Visual Basic code.

not to mention Visual Basic for Applications

Visual Basic should be killed with a stake to the heart.
And then the face.
And the neck. And the gut.
Until all of Visual Basic is an unidentifiable corpse full of stake holes.

Perhaps... but in the mean time VBA has billions if not trillions of dollars of human investment.
OK not a trillion but you get my drift

Visual basic had one advantage to be honest it was easy to get a GUI programm running with very little efford

4:38 AM
GUI sucks, which is the appeal of BASH

@Videonauth Yeah, but the quality of the applications was terrible.
Trust me - I did lots of VBA programming.

...in Excel.
@KazWolfe Lol.

i didnt say i liked it just pointed out that this WYSIWYg approach was one advantage

@NathanOsman I did a bar-coded order tracking system in Excel using VBA... it was brilliant if I don't mind saying so (which I don't)

4:41 AM
Fair enough - it did have to be done whether I liked it or not :D

i wrote a barcode inventory tracking system in excel with just COUNTIFS

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Everytime I finished a VBA script, I handled it with kid gloves. I didn't want to touch anything for fear of destroying a working script.
@KazWolfe Lo.....l?

@NathanOsman you should see the database at my old place of employment.
all in Access and VBA.

@NathanOsman macros...

Oh /facepalm...

4:43 AM
I have them a replacement system with MySQL and a custom-made frontend...

@KazWolfe That's a huge step forward.

First the Executive Director wanted access to Engineering Mode because i stupidly left the button in the ALPHA BUILD.
Well, I had to give it to her. She wiped the entire test DB clean.
When I finally told her that engineering mode = break things, she relented.
Then, a board member complained because she didn't know SQL. And she wanted Access back.
So I was forced to tear down everything and redo the Access database hell.
Literally all the other employees complained though, because everyone who actually used the database were involved with the creation of the database.
Their response: "I don't want to learn a new platform, and the old one worked just fine"

Gah.

"worked just fine" = 45 seconds to find a single member.

When I went to mainframe school they said response time should be < .75 seconds.

4:46 AM
45 seconds O_o

together, the board member and the ED (while the system still existed) wiped about 80 tables (including three of the production tables!) from engineering mode.
And of course, it was "my fault" because I left a "dangerous button" that "deleted data without regard" in a menu that only I was supposed to have access to!
And that they forced me to give them!

Welcome to the world of politics.

UPDATE: As of this morning we have lost DNS and Gerrit is now offline - with little doubt as a reaction to our blog post yesterday. Goodbye
:(

I was so proud of that DB engine.

Who is Gerrit? and hy should we care?

4:49 AM
It was made specifically for them, with the employees that used it making every single important design choice!

I've been overly proud of my software creations too.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix gerritcodereview.com
oh, then of course the ED wanted to "make my own queries"
i pointed out the SQL console I made for them...
"I don't want to write code and use a command line!"
"Well, [ED], that's the only way you can make custom queries. Or you can ask me to include a query in the selection menu."
"Oh... well, can you just create like an interface so I can make my own query?"

Sounds like a fun job.
I feel your pain.

"No. I can't give you all the capability that raw SQL provides, which is capability I'm sure you'll ask for. SQL is literally one of the easiest languages. Here's a page that will teach you basic SQL in 30 minutes"

My office PC is running Office 97 on Windows XP.
@KazWolfe You could create a separate MySQL user that can do nothing but query.

4:53 AM
"I don't have time to read that" She proceeds to waste 4 hours on Facebook
4
@NathanOsman That's what it was. She didn't want to write code.

Lame.

You should write a paper "Computers were invented for her to waste 4 hours a day"

She'd maybe "make" six queries. It would be so easy to add them to a dropdown menu.
And allow her to change parameters. But no, she wanted full customization without a SQL console.

Use a RegEx then to match the query against one of them to give the illusion of "custom SQL" then :D

another alien movie?

4:54 AM
@NathanOsman nononono. she wanted an Access-like GUI to make queries.

Wat.

yep.

Access is... well... ouch.

Access is nice, but it has one major bug.
It allows users to store data in it.

I wonder if it's improved any since Access 97.
Since that's the last version I've used.

4:55 AM
Access with a MySQL backend is pretty cool.

Oh? It can do that now?

yep.

Oh, let me guess. ODBC.

there is nothing better than SAP but guess most companies wont get it because its frickn expensive

yep.

4:57 AM
We also have an expensive ERP application but that's another story.

But I can't even fathom her choices. Had I listened to her "design ideas," the system would be impossible for employees to use.
yaknow, the people who actually use the system day-to-day, the people who I spent countless hours in design meetings with? Asking their feedback every single step?

I'm tossing around the idea of expanding Numbles to do more ERP tasks like invoicing, resources, etc.
I'm getting tired of using LibreOffice to create invoices.

@NathanOsman ODBC will make you a lot of money on AS/400.

There is also Odoo.

And I told the employees "I know the big red Engineering Mode button looks fun, but DON'T PRESS IT." They were all "k." Nobody pressed it.

4:59 AM
@Videonauth You shouldn't diss SAP as being expensive but rather get a job in that niche market.

COBOL here we come.

Except for the ED and board member. Who promptly asked me for access, and then broke literally everything by clicking random things because "there was no help" or "there was no confirmation or warning"

@KazWolfe tsk tsk tsk - should have fuzz tested :P

I gave up and hid the button after they switched the database over to "production" and then nuked every single entry because they hit the "CLEAR DATA" button.

Common Orientated Business Object Language (Grace Hopper US military 1940 something) = COBOL @NathanOsman

5:01 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix i never had a SAP training or something because you pay horrendous sums on training courses , so almost no knowledge in it i just jknow that it is the swiss army knive for database frontends

Snack time. TTYL.
Merry Christmas, y'all.
(Or happy boxing day if the day is over.)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix by the way, it's minus 19 degrees tonight.
Whew!
I imagine you are experiencing similar temperatures.

@Videonauth You shouldn't have to pay for computer programming lessons at your age... Think Apprentice like Welding or Plumbing where they pay you $20 / hour to learn whilst you do grundge work and then after becoming skilled they pay you $100 / hour to be a journeyman.

wow where do you get those wages, here if i would worlk in my job i have a journeyman in i currently would get about 10-11 euros an hour
if i could still do it

@NathanOsman -19 is rather unusual for Fraser Valley where you live... Just yesterday Russia Today out of Moscow and Al-Jazeera out of Doha, Qatar were reporting how North Pole was 25 degrees hotter than normal proving that climate change (ie global warming) exists.

i have spend half my life as a industrial mechanic working a cnc milling machine

5:06 AM
@Videonauth CNC pays like 40 bucks an hour here in Edmonton.

well would have to compare that with the living costs etc but thats a pretty good wage

Unfotunately the Truedeau government is busy importing Syrian's for welfare that can't type english rather than CNC knowledgeable people as that will support Obama's misguided rebels who have killed 500K in Syria.

that would make brutto 6400 $ /month with average 160 hours per month

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I'm not in the Fraser valley.
I'm in Calgary.

@NathanOsman Oh right you were flying out of Vancouver and fogged in last time we talked and I wondered where you were flying to. I wanted to suggest Caribbean but now I know :)

5:11 AM
Nope. No tropical weather here :P

Anyways I'm going Boxing Day shopping to West Edmonton Mall tomorrow so I don't care what temp is as long as girls are HOT :)

name still does not check out.
also lucky you, getting to go to places where attractive girls frequent.

It's the largest mall in the world Kaz after "Mall of America".

my points still stand.

Indeed.

5:14 AM
attractive girls don't wander into my office.

I won't be outside likely. I'll do my shopping online :)

Take down the sign on your office that says "Stalkers R Us" and put up a new sign saying "Hot Girls Welcome"

we don't have one of those signs

pfft it was a joke

5:24 AM
For the love of Media.... Russia Today is still talking about "he-who-shall-not-be-named" winning the election and only California and NY giving Clinton the popular vote and she shouldn't win.... Why can't US TV just figure it out and publish answer so Russia Today can re-report it?
I don't mind getting my news about American confusion from Russia Today (rt.com) but I don't want to hear the same story for 18 days.... Eventually Americans have to figure out the election!
As far as Netenyahoo saying yesterday it doesn't matter to him if Clinton or "he-who-shall-not-be-named" was elected because either one is better than Obama he (Netenyahoo) is going to get a rude awakening.

Yaaaay, tail implementation in python is successful. Takes about 30 microseconds to get last x lines from a 2GB file
OK, enough of that for today
i probably need to lay down and chill

5:46 AM
@KazWolfe who does it have to be so tempting BRIGHT RED. AND SO ALLURINGLY PRESSABLE?

6:04 AM
@JourneymanGeek it wasn't. It was under HELP and had a password screen.

@KazWolfe hm. Then it was not a proper Big Red Doom Button

6:18 AM
@JourneymanGeek of course not.
it was meant not to be clicked by anyone but me.

what is ubuntu touch? Is that the mobile version of Ubuntu?

yes
but what is webapp-container?

I dont know what webapp-container is. the OP didnt explain, but are they hoping to get documentation from within the ubuntu touch OS on a mobile device? or are they developing software on a desktop that they intend to run on an ubuntu touch instance eventually?

@Zanna na just wanted to see if it still works and it refused to boot into XP
its a laptop from around 1990-1995
No usb etc.

Good afternoon ! :)

@Videonauth wow so old! My dad uses Win 2000 because he can't afford to buy the new version of some proprietary app he needs for work... his system is limping severely now. But he is gradually transitioning to Mint

@Videonauth it's always weird to me when people who obviously don't speak English well try to correct grammar :p

:) so im not alone with my verdict of rejecting this

@NathanOsman does the OP3 also have QC3.0 along with Dash?

Nope
or USB PD
tho its compatible with OPPO's quick charge tech VOOC I think

2:32 PM
well duh
but that's a little annoying
I know Dash Charge is nice and all, but it should at least have QC too

ah, no QC support
and yeah, you're tied to their very nice chargers

2:45 PM
question: I'm just copying a whole lot of data to an external drive, I want to check the integrity of my copy before i go on and delete/format the origin, is there a command that can do that?

hm. after copying?

yep

md5sum ?

well could take a long time, im talking about 1 TB of data in files of varying size

could just do a quick check of file/directory sizes?

2:50 PM
well i still got alot to copy anyways so i will ponder over this
It’s sad to think we’re probably gonna hear the term “Egg tray DDoS” in our lifetime. https://twitter.com/Nick_Craver/status/813381602340470785

lol
@JourneymanGeek that could work well. Even small errors will show up as a pretty big difference if they happen a few times
@Seth pls wn.nr/Xp2f7G

3:08 PM
@Videonauth do it it right to start with with something like rsync?

actually im doing cp -rvu /media/disk1/* /media/disk2/backup/
but the backup disk is an old drive i normaly have sitting in a shelf and it fails from time to time
I found out if a file is not the same as on the origin it will copy it again
so i guess when im running this command at the end again and it shows no file copying it is all right
according to smartmon-tools the disk itself is OK, i guess its the usb sata controler who keeps dying

@Zacharee1 - Can you please explain how this is POB? askubuntu.com/q/864565/518562 ?

"is it safe?"

@Zacharee1 Okay, fair enough. If I give it a better title can we re-open it?

@AndroidDev yeah

3:23 PM
@Zacharee1 What do you think would be a fitting title? Maybe, "Have the Linux kernel bugs that caused data loss when using a Samsung 850 Pro SSD been resolved?"
Ummmmmm....

Q: Have the Linux kernel bugs that caused data loss when using a Samsung 850 Pro SSD been resolved?

Android DevI just got a brand new Samsung 850 Pro SSD, and I would like to install Ubuntu 14.04 onto it. I have read some pretty ugly stories of data loss with the 850 series SSDs when using Linux due to bugs in the kernel, as well as bugs in the TRIM operation. I have done my research, but most of what I...

@muru voted to delete , left a comment

@Serg and Seth put in the last delete vote. Thanks!

anytime

@muru using a custom flag in the future would prevent this :)
VLQ is for "unsalvageable garbage", and while I think we can all agree that answer probably qualifies it is a) not obvious and b) subjective (many people say VLQ is for gibberish, not wrong answers).
Which is why I've been arguing for its removal for years now...

@Seth true, but I meant it to be handled by normal reviewers, where they could have left the usual canned comments requesting improvements

@muru ah. Well the problem is it passes pretty much all quality sanity checks :-/
A comment might have been a good idea in that case.

so, with nano, let's say I made and saved a change, and now want to delete all changes made without manually deleting every line. how can I do that?

@heather alt+u , it's the undo shortcut

so i can go back into the file, press alt+u, and it'll be fixed? okay, let me try that.

@edwinksl +70

@heather if you exited the file, it won't work

oh, darn
yeah, i exited the file
is there any other way to do it?

Undo operations in any program work for as long as the file is open by the program
Um . . .yeah, i don't think there's other way . . . sorry

no, you're good
i should've thought more about what I was doing before exiting
thanks though

@Seth I think that guy edited his /etc/network/interfaces file to get static IP address, and he can access hosts by IP address, but domains - only after restarting the networking service. It looks to me like he didn't edit things properly and needs to configure DNS servers, either via /etc/resolv.conf or some other way
Odd thing is that OP also uses br0 interface. I've never seen anything before

isnt uufix banned here as link ?

5:53 PM
@Videonauth OP provided link to image, but regardless of that, OP gave solution for Windows ( C:\ path) so it's not an answer

well i figured it yout to be an audit :p

Yay, audit passed

nice one tho i nearly would have fallen for it

6:18 PM
@Serg but what domains?

6:29 PM
@Seth I don't know, whatever OP was testing. Maybe he tried to go to google.com, but can only ping 8.8.8.8 - that's what I'm saying. Again, that's only my understanding of what's going on - I don't have clarity there either

True, so true...
