Does anyone remember when AMD promised to support GCN 1.0 cards with their new driver by the end of the year?

Year is almost over...

they didn't say which year :p

"by the end of the year" implies the current year.

not legally

5:30 PM
Don't say that. Stop making excuses for them :P

:D

My R9 270X has waited long enough.

lolol

sup?

the close vote queue

5:31 PM
lol

Ubuntu shouldn't have jumped X11 versions if they weren't ready to hold AMD's feet over the fire with driver support.

didn't a lot of Linux versions change?

@Zacharee1 you mean distributions?

yes

Could you imagine living in a country where you are not allowed to leave?

5:35 PM
wat

@TheXed you live in America.
They won't let you out?
@Zacharee1 may be interested to know that.

@NathanOsman lol...I was thinking more about North Korea...

Oh.
What is with people using emoji in email subjects (which is really just Unicode)?

Oh and even more then that, if you do attempt to leave and they catch you they label you a traitor and your life becomes even more miserable...

But communism is awesome! (not)

Seth principle: "OP will respond back with (half the info requested) / (info given in your comment/answer)"
amend that to include "wrong format".

So you need to ask for twice as much info as you need? :D

I can't even change the default language to Korean...
and they might do a better job at this:
If they stopped threatening the rest of the world with nuclear weapons...

lol
"Trust us, we love peace, but.. Nukes..."

5:56 PM
Seems like every nation that's been invaded didn't have nukes. On the other hand every nation with nukes has never been invaded.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix suspicion of having nukes was a good excuse for invasion too. Wink wink, Iraq ?

That's not true...granted we didn't have nukes at the time but in 1942 Japan launched the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. 2001, some yuppies from Afghanistan crashed 4 planes into buildings... and we threaten to invade Canada all the time...

@Serg hmm I think that was chemical or bio weapons.

@Serg The UN Weapons Inspectors were there for 10 years prior to invasion just to make sure there were no weapons of substantial defensive powers.

@Serg yeah they where looking for "Weapons of Mass Destruction" which might include Nukes, but not limited too...

6:01 PM
Lets face it US won't put 100K+ troops on ground if there is a chance they'll be massively killed.

Q: What is the connection between ans answer and its poster, none?

Jacob VlijmFor quite a while I have been asking myself what it is that makes us want to produce answers. Good answers. Sometimes answers that take a considerasble amount of time to do research, walk around with it, come to a concept. Subsequently spend hours on working things out, test, retry, finetune. A p...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix if you truly believe that then you should be invaded....UN Weapon Inspectors had access to nothing, and Dessert Storm had a real risk of chemical warfare but the coalition forced them out of Kuwait despite the risks...

8 different ways to skin same cat : askubuntu.com/a/863573/295286 \ o/

@TheXed You should talk to Hans Blix... he's pretty adament they searched the whole country.

@Serg I am pretty sure it is illegal to skin cats...

6:04 PM
According to Blair, the trigger was Iraq's failure to take a "final opportunity" to disarm itself of alleged nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons that U.S. and British officials called an immediate and intolerable threat to world peace.[27] ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_invasion_of_Iraq )
@jokerdino @TheXed @WinEunuuchs2Unix ^

@Serg which we never did find, but IMHO I think they are still buried in some under ground bunker somewhere...

@TheXed Somehow I doubt it. It's been all about oil since day one, but then again, only those who carried out these operations know

@Serg, I don't believe that...if it was all about oil we wouldn't have asked the UN for permission to invade...we take what we want, we are American.

Token ask...

Either way Saddam had to go...
The guy used Chemical Weapons on his on people for Christ Sake...

6:11 PM
But "the West" did nothing whatsoever about that at the time...

@Zanna but should have...

@TheXed Which, of course, justifies the US going in a killing them, right?

@Zanna Well, they did sell him the weapons. That's something.

His people? I don't think he considered Kurd as his people.

6:12 PM
@terdon no, just Saddam...and his cronies...

@TheXed Uhm. Okay. You might want to read up on what actually happened there and the number of civilian casualties.

while my typo is obvious a good to edit, the part of autocolor is defined not where the aliases are defined, and up to that if encluding on the wrong position

@terdon I know there was....up to 600,000...

@Serg Tony Blair is a liar working for Goldman Sachs. His wife is a lawyer. He and Jack Straw should be locked up for a long time...

I am not saying it was justified. What I am saying is other methods probably should have been used to rid the world of him.

6:14 PM
@TheXed True. Although in many ways he wasn't the worst and while we continue supporting, arming and funding worse, the moral high horse is a little lame.
More to the point, imposing your own moral rules and choice of government on another sovereign state is a very slippery slope. Who gets to choose who's "right".

@terdon I know for every Despot we rid the world of, another one pops up...

@TheXed Not pops. He is usually inserted by the very people you claim go around ridding the world of same.
It's that hypocrisy that really gets me.

I was using the term "pop" loosely...

:)
More to the point, I can't think of a single time that the removal of an oppressive head of state by external forces left the host country better off. I can think of many that left the invading country better off, but the locals?
There may well be one or two, I guess, but it certainly isn't the norm.
And yet, we still go around believing that war is a valid form of politics.

The thing is...I don't think the problem lies in the government, or the type of government,,, the real problem is, that these people turn out to be crazy ass hats they like to kill/torture/rape their own people and the people around them.

6:17 PM
@TheXed Who?

who ever is leading the government at that time...

@TheXed True. But what gives us (whoever "we" might be) the right to decide that and step in? I'm not saying it's always wrong, not by definition, but it certainly isn't always right.
The only way I can see this working is with true international support. Which most certainly wasn't the case in Iraq, Bush's newspeak about coalitions of the willing notwithstanding.

Yay, accepted answer , which brings me to 100 points today

I got 2 points today... for accepting Bytes answer on what's faster sed or tail...LOL
oh well some days can be very slow
Anyone planning on using 17.04 alpha on December 29th?

6:34 PM
Wooot.... I'm down to #6 again in hats. :-/

I'm not even trying to get hats anymore. @Zanna has broken leader board with 15 yesterday , so it's probably impossible for me to catch up

Well, Kaz the fanhatic has 17 hats...

Maybe I should run away and hide from AU for couple of days because there's drama growing again . . .
yay, snap hat. My wolf be puking rainbows soon

@ByteCommander How do you find out where you stand in hat count?

Q: Somebody posted an answer , that is modified but based on my earlier answer. How should I react?

SergThis question is related to this: What is the connection between an answer and its poster, none? What do stackexchange rules say about use and re-use of answers ? Are users restricted from answering their own question based on something another person posted earlier ?

@Seth @terdon would be interested to hear modly opinion on this
wooo, anther accept

6:43 PM
@terdon indeed
@jokerdino indeed :(

@Serg My "modly opinion" (though not, alas, my moodly appendage) is quoted in the question.

OK, time to go
See ya'll later

7:02 PM
@Serg Answered. Thought you were referring to the local one.

@Serg not hats for me today on AU, I think everyone will overtake me pretty quickly
I've got 33 hats altogether, somehow... (including dupe hats on other sites)

@Videonauth Heh, I just wanted to post that too! :D

VTCed (3 more needed)

Voted... I have some secret hat that just showed up...
Dunno what I did to get it...
[shrug]

@AskUbuntuMeta OP did not accept his version of the answer... We still don't know if OP will accept his own answer or the answer that helped him to get there.

8:14 PM
hello. guys, i really want to use ubuntu
i did the bootable usb, and when the screen is loading, it never finishes
it just freezes
tried differents usb, different programs to boot the os
also tried xubuntu - same result
tried pressing esc, alt etc. but cant get any info
is there anything i could try?

user136984
@mrSuperEvening: What version of Ubuntu are you trying to install? And what is your hardware? I assume that you have configured your BIOS as such to allow this and that it does actually boot into the LiveUSB and then 'freeze' as you say?

This debloated stock ROM is nice and fast
Definitely good enough to tide me over until CM 14.1 is ready
And there are a lot of devs who moved to this device and want to help with AOSP development

Yay, silver badge made my hat_counter += 2 and pushed my rank to #4

16.04
inter core i5 2.30ghz
intel*
8gb ram

Also, we're 44 hats behind the Super User guys in total site hat count. Let's beat them!

8:29 PM
@ByteCommander welcome to 12 hats

please guys can you help
i hate using windows
@ParanoidPanda

<_>
_^^_^^_^_^^_^__^__^__^_^

that's awesome @Edity
I need some opinions... something just came to my attention in review and I'm struggling to think clearly about it...
it links to this question askubuntu.com/questions/37629/…

8:52 PM
.
sorry random dot was just for clearing ping

the newer question is unanswered... is it a dupe? imho the post I came across in review is NAA, but I am glad the post got a bump and I think it is a helpful comment... anything we can do to fix this? close the post as a bug report or dupe it?

umm
dupe it i think

@Zanna i followed the bug report in another answer (askubuntu.com/a/37897/15003) and looks there is already a fix? bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nux/+bug/728745

great, thanks...

we can make OP of that new answer include this info and upvote their answer

9:00 PM
so 4 years elapsed, this person is still having issues... so is the bug relevant after all though?

relevant enough for someone to write a post
in 2016

this is what I was thinking...
but is it a different bug?
the last "fix released" was in 2014
in 2015 OP of new Q should not have same issue I think?

@Zanna i am tempted to close as no repro since OP didn't respond to fabby with updates

hi diamond moderator

9:09 PM
@edwinksl yeah, you have a point, it's an abandoned question

burn it then?

I would like to burn it
if the issue is still relevant, it can be asked about anew
voted no repro
but idk what community will think

at most they disagree ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

indeed :)
thanks a lot for helping me with that! as usual :D

i demand food as payment, thanks

9:20 PM
what do you fancy?

baklava

hahaha OK, I'll go get some

i set "nouveau.modeset=0" for xubuntu and it worked. however, ubuntu still gets stuck on loading screen :(
is there any other setting i could try maybe?
i googled a lot, cant find any

you could try nomodeset

what does it mean?
ok ive googled it, srr, ignore
thank you,
ill try it

9:23 PM
:) good luck...

so should i just add nomodeset?
instead of nouveau.modeset=0

user136984
@Zanna: Did you just call you sir? Or is that some acronym I don't know about? :D

I think they meant sorry

@Zanna

@mrSuperEvening yeah

9:25 PM
thank you very much
going now to try

user136984

@Zanna it's an Indian thing, for some reason.
Many of them call you "sir".

Hmm it can only be politeness :)
@Seth was just reading & upvoting your comments on meta and laughing to myself nostalgically about chat rants hahaha this place is quite therapeutic sometimes
Hmm time to sleep, early train home tomorrow :) later all

there goes site moderation

10:56 PM

user136984
Does anyone else here run Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 with GNOME 3.22 and be willing to test something under Wayland for me?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix: Boring indeed, they haven't updated the version of Unity running stably on systems for years.

user136984

Q: Why would an answer posted by a 5 year user end up in the Late Answer New User queue?

Elder GeekI just reviewed this answer. After suggesting minor improvements, my curiosity got the better of me and I checked the profile of the poster and discovered they have been a (granted mostly inactive) member for over 5 years! Is the queue misnamed? Should it be the Late Answer Low Rep queue?

11:52 PM
Don't worry Serg... I'm sure Xed will be here after supper to throw out some fish puns.
