@mrSuperEvening well sorry about that. Mobile is a you-know-what

yawns
someone owes me coffee
I think it's @NathanOsman who owes me coffee lol

@ThomasWard you're boring on coffee. Go vodka

@Zacharee1 can't right now.
give coffee.

sudo apt send cawfee

Maybe you guys can negotiate like Coffee + Baileys Irish Cream.

12:14 AM
thinks
mmmm, no just coffee thanks

I'm having coffee right meow

@NathanOsman Trump just said he wants to boost Nukes a few hours after Putin said he wanted boost nukes... I think they were reading our posts this morning!

@WinEunuuchs2Unix we done goofed
look at dem numbars
a few more and I'll be 1337 AF

@Serg *accidentally purges five answers*
whoopsies.

tsk tsk

12:21 AM

@NathanOsman mr. meme bot, we need your halp
@ThomasWard how's your neck to day ?

a lot better :)

Wat.
Who flew the Nathan flag?

@NathanOsman itz meme time >:)

12:25 AM
Someone hath called and I hath answered.

@NathanOsman two calls came forth
one for coffee
and one for meme bot

I shall deliver the caffeine.

@ThomasWard Now, whatever you do, don't turn your head sharply to the left to look at that evil thing behind you
/trolling

@Serg There's no evil behind me, that's just the pentagram where I summon the Dark Ones to this world.
the true evil is emerging from that portal behind you

12:27 AM
O_o

@NathanOsman E:NOTENOUGHCOFFEE

that's one helluva cup

This graph is accurate:
user image
3

@NathanOsman Not accurate enough

what is that red thing
never heard of it

12:30 AM
the "Oxygen" thing needs reduced by 50%
the "Nutritious Diet" needs to go away
adequate sleep can stay
and the parts that were just removed, "Souls of the Damned (for Nourishment)"

All that coffee is bad for you... that's why I drink beer and smoke cigarettes :p

@edwinksl That's one of the thing that often returns error 404

Sleep. What a fascinating idea. I should try it sometime.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix take it step further, drink coffee mixed with beer and smoke at the same time . . . .wait, that's what I do almost every day O_o

@Seth Linux fish puns? (Took me a few minutes but here you go):
_Orange roughy_ ...A buggy Ubuntu install.
_Haddock_ ...but now I use the menus.
_Mackernel_ : Tweaking the kernel until it compiles.
My graphics are perfect, so now I'm gonna _barracuda_ update.
_Lamp?rey_ too much work for such a simple project.

12:34 AM
My solution is lots of cofee < 12pm, lots of beer after > 4pm... in between get your oxegen.

@chaskes I think you meant @Serg but those are really good nonetheless! :D

Wow @chaskes you are the pun King... I feel like a fish out of water compared to you!

"sleep" is to "programmer" what "usability" is to "gnome desktop".
5
Oops. I said it.

@chaskes not bad, not bad at all ^_^b

@NathanOsman harsh

12:35 AM
I've said worse :D

@edwinksl but true

Thanks all. :)

I thought Unity was a fork of Gnome Desktop... No?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix well it uses GNOME components...
but I personally wouldn't call it a fork, even if that's its official description

@Zacharee1 yes I couldn't help notice the gnome sessions underneath the hood

12:36 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix it's a Compiz plugin.

@NathanOsman Budgie is GNOME (for now) and it works great

@NathanOsman Yes I couldn't help notice the CCSM jazz whatever it's called.

Yeah, it's gotten marginally better over the years.

and I noticed the udev, and the systemd and the lightdm and the greeter and the...

Ah, GNU/Linux.

12:38 AM
... anyway Ubuntu 17.04 is coming out in 7 days...so I'll see the Unity 8 stuff and snap stuff and...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix think of it this way: Unity is a jacket that compiz wears , and it looks far better on compiz than GNOME does ;)

...and I'll have lots of new bugs!!!!

@WinEunuuchs2Unix Is Unity 8 actually coming?

@Zacharee1 According to what I read yesterday you'll have two sign on's, one for unity regulary one for unity 8

hmm

12:40 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix no, the first beta is coming.

didn't they claim the same thing with 16.04?

@NathanOsman No first ALPHA is coming.

First pre-alpha!

....Alpha 1 in 7 days... Alpha 2 later... then Beta 1.

12:41 AM
Whatever it is, the final thing isn't until April.

maybe we'll even have 17.06 :D

... but won't it be fun to be the first guy on the bug train?

like 4.06 and 6.06
@WinEunuuchs2Unix just install 10 DEs. You'll get your bugs then

@WinEunuuchs2Unix woo woo — all aboard the bug train.
@Zacharee1 heck, just install two.

wow someone tossed a flashbang into the discord room xD

12:42 AM
@NathanOsman it must be 10. No more, no less

I have enough problems with one DE and 5 different tools that suspend/resume.
Zach's 10 commandments are really 10 DE's

I was trying to reference Monty Python ;P

wouldn't it be 10 is right out?
watil, 11 is right out I think

@chaskes well I think that comparison is in there
but idk
can't watch rn

@Zacharee1 The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch?

12:45 AM
C'mon, I dare someone to install 10 DE's.
Doooo eeeeet.

@ThomasWard oui monssieur

@NathanOsman buy me a $1200 hypervisor and we'll discuss.
'cause that's where it'll run :P

@NathanOsman I think I already have..
possibly

@ThomasWard AWS dude.
@Zacharee1 real ones?

@Zacharee1 5 is right out.

12:47 AM
@NathanOsman Not enough. I need somewhere to dump 50 VMs

@chaskes so that would be 12 in my case

yeah, that would work.

@ThomasWard how on earth do you have 50 VMs O_o ?

Unity, Unity 8, GNOME, MATE, LXDE, XFCE, Budgie, Kylin, GNOME Flashback, I know there's one here

and why ?

12:48 AM
teh lolz

@Serg I have over 20...
When you need to reproduce bugs, you invariably end up with lots of VMs.

i have only 10 so far
actually no, 9
Arch/ CentOS/ Deepin15/ Kylin/ SHARED_FOLDER/
bsd/ Deepin/ Deepin2/ Lubuntu/ Ubuntu Mate/

@Serg Lots of infrastructure

VM harder :D
I'm slowly moving to Docker for testing.
Then I don't need to go through installation.

I feel bad, though, I haven't been using a few of them in a while
Arch and FreeBSD for example

12:50 AM
I had a bare metal Arch install.
Then I broke it.

^^ If I had a nickel...
I'd have fifteen cents

Lol.

I'd like to install Arch and Ubuntu 17.04 on my last partition on sda... have to be extended of course with say 16 logical parttions?

LVM is what you need.

I need LVM?... no thanks bad experience with mdadm and EnhanceIO and Intel RST.

12:52 AM
I gotta come up with some project for Arch. Otherwise, it's no fun just have it sitting around

Arch isn't really all that special. Except things get updated faster.

You could set up voice recognition "Computer... ARCH"

Arch isn't Debian, I can tell you that much.

Debian is pretty large... Is it like #2 in the Linuxverse?

Yeah, it was a lot more involved. Ubuntu installation is just a breathe compared to Arch. And it took me forever and ever to figure out how to enable keyboard or touchpad or whatever it was in GUI
Why all of a sudden all images on YouTube look low-res for me ?

12:57 AM
@Serg click on that little gear and change from 144p to 1080p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix not the video, the actual YouTube logo and bell button for notifications
ok, back to normal

I can't understand why Airbus (an EU company) needs approval from USA to sell 10 billion worth of planes to Iran.

Export controls on (US) tech used in the plane.

@chaskes well those export controls would disappear overnight if Iran started talking to Russia or China on buying their planes for 10 billion instead :D
Funny how Russia can fly astronauts to space station but they can't build a jumbo jet airliner
Wow that only took 10 seconds.

1:11 AM
<<< After four months found out why LAMP is capitalized and more importantly what each letter stands for... hint it's not a shiny thing on your night table.

Well, the car is supposed to fold into a briefcase, and I have a couple of other notes I can't make here, but for anyone old enough, this is pretty cool:

1:34 AM
hi

Hey how was dinner
Did you have fish and chips :p

@WinEunuuchs2Unix evil, 'cause I consumed fifty souls.
muahahahaha

Well those 50 VM users will just call you up tomorrow asking you to restore their profiles.

they're not the VM users

meh... it's only 50 you have a long way to catch up with ME wars.

2:13 AM
My father showed me on craigslist Burroughs Calculator just now. It's amazing how 100 years ago we basically had huge boxes for calculators, while today I've a calculator that does calculus and fits in my pocket . . . daaaaaam,says a beaver

^^ huh, didn't box but is Apollo 13 slide rule scene

Oh, the logarithmic slideruler ?

yep

I've never used one of those, i only heard of it

me neither

2:28 AM
my gosh . . . computing has really stepped far quite a lot . . .

@Serg There were no calculators 100 years ago.. unless you mean an Abacus. Calculators were invented around 1974 by Texas Instruments.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix see this:
Pascal's mechanical calculator , 1700s

I would put that on par with an Abacus on wheels :D

Until what, the 70's?, computers weren't just waiting for input with stored programs ready to act on the input. Everything, program and data, had to be custom programmed. So they couldn't just use the mainframe.

And this is what I was talking about earlier, Burrough's mechanical calculator
And how convenient, it's form 1800s

2:32 AM
They also had cash registers before calculators too.

Also mechanical. Think cash registers.
But of course cash registers had more limited functions

The point is that for as long as humans existed, they were trying to invent computing devices
Computers are just another step in that direction

Right, the switch from analog/mechanical to digital/electronic was huge, but was not the invention of the calculator. Btw, through WW2 "calculator" was the job title of the person pushing the slide rules or adding machines, not the name of a device. There's a good scene in Surely You're Joking Mr Feynman describing a room full of calculators (people, mostly women) forming in effect a larger mechanical device itself since the problem was solved assembly line style.

5,000 years ago in Iraq they recorded debts and assets on clay tablets and invented what we now call double entry accounting. The counting game has been going on for a long time and our computers do it very well even if we use most of the power for music and videos.

Hehe, the trick is that those videos and music use calculations too. TCP has algorithms that predict whether your network is congested or not, and scales down or up the amount of packets transmitted
So, those youtube videos are still calculations . . . we just don't see them happening

2:44 AM
Excellent point

Not to mention all the calculations in 3D gaming that let you turn and move in a virtual world... rendered onto HD display

that too

3:03 AM
What's with the .mx site in the link in this answer? Is that legit? askubuntu.com/a/863720/117123 Roll over the 'download it here' @seth

@chaskes well that doesnt sound right
why downloading crom from an other spot as google it self

Exactly. but maybe the user was redirected there by google and it's a legit site? just not sure

but yes whois returns for both IP google as owner and tech contact

@Videonauth Nah, I think it has to do with location. The IP that responds in your case is google's servers in france. In my case it's Denver's servers
( and I know it's France because I did reverse DNS lookup just now )

3:23 AM
my locale is en_US.UTF-8

Correction - not locale as in language, location as in your IPs geolocation

ah ok :)) that makes more sense
yes i guess google directs you thorugh its own network and for load balancing serving the side from a location which is closer to me, for performance reasons/load balancing

yep
If you really want to have fun, do whois google.com
you will see stuff like this:

well how did you do the reverse dns lookup?

3:28 AM
viw browser ?

@Videonauth I have a script for that. One second, I'll paste
#!/bin/bash
export LC_ALL=C
for item
do
 domain=$(dig @8.8.8.8  -x "$item" +noall +authority +answer)
 if [ -n "$domain"  ] ;
 then
     echo "$domain"
 else
     echo "$item" result is NULL
 fi
done
basically, dig -x is all you need
Or in python, you can do something like this
$ python -c 'import socket,sys; print socket.gethostbyaddr(sys.argv[1])'  4.2.2.2
('b.resolvers.Level3.net', [], ['4.2.2.2'])
but that will probably use your system DNS, I don't know how to make it look up at specific DNS server

nice noted that

omg, truest thing ever

Me every time: "I know I made this code work, but I bloody don't remember how and have no idea what this or that function does"

fact: its gets weirder and weirde the longe the code exists, i just checked a bashs cript i made 8 months ago for something and felt exactly like that

@edwinksl haha but I'll end up at the last stop if I do that

@Zanna but you know you will end up at last stop even if you are awake, so may as well sleep

@chaskes Yeah, that's Google's mexico domain.
(only just learned this by Googling)

@Seth Thx for checking. After I pinged Serg straightened us out on what was going on. Wasn't sure it a never-mind ping would be more annoying, but proably should have

Q: How to get boys off your back?

user22683simple yet complex question : I am a girl, rather hot ( fells weird writing this down ) in a ECE class with about 85% of males. I am also very single and wish to remain so. How do I get guys off my back while not beeing a jerk, not breaking any hearts and still having friends ?

@edwinksl uh . . . totally appropriate site to post to . . .

lol

:D
yeah but i can feel the pain of this girl, since im a male and im actually happy we had about 30% girls in MINT coursesworldwide this year, for the girls its rather hard to go through without being asked constantly by hormone driven nerds :)

"This question does not appear to be about computational science within the scope defined in the help center.
If this question can be reworded to fit the rules in the help center, please edit the question."
Good luck with that...

hahaha

5:00 AM
Find a parameter $a$ quantifiying the attractiveness of 85% of your input data. Build a vector of Pairs of $a$ with a pointer to the corresponding individual. Sort them with Divide and Conquer paradigm. Use your pointer of the last member of the sorted vector. Test the anti hypothesis which is "you want to have a relation". If the thesis is rejected you can simply break up while have proven to every other member in your class that you cannot be together with him. q.e.d. — Jan Hackenberg yesterday

lol there is only an arrow missing pointin to the head
anyone of you guys familiar with sound devices on ubuntu? im struggling actually to get the audio from my tv reciever which ends up in line-in to VLC

Umm you want audio out from your TV to go to your PC mic jack?

well i have no tv im watching tv over a vido grabber card which has no audio

No idea what you're saying

so im unsing line-in for the audio and well I got the input stream on VLC working for /dev/video1 which is my reciever
but i cant find which of the audio devices is carrying line-in

5:30 AM
look into pactl or something like that. it's command-line utility for pulse audio. You should be able to switch input sink. Used it once but by now don't remember jack . . . .no pun intended

if i get into the audio settings its just saying line-in but no clue how this resolves to /dev/snd/xxxxx

what does ls /sys/class/drm/ reveal? Any likely candidates?

in windows this was in fact pretty easy to set up but well, it wouldn't be fund if its easy ya know

5:37 AM
What's the make and model of your "video grabber"?

uuuuhhhhhh something cheap, but the video grabber isnt the problem, the video feed i get to show up, but im processing the audion over the oonboard audio card
which is
Chip: Analog Devices AD1988B

You mean the video grabber doesn't have built in audio?

he has but theres the audio of my webcam ending :)
which works fine btw

what's the webcam have to do with your having no TV and using videograbber? Sounds like you're watching yourself instead of Game of Thrones...LOL

no see my setup:
video grabber video canal comes from tv reciever
video grabber audio signal comes from webcam (couldnt get skype work with the line in)
sound card line in is comming from tv reciever
and webcam video comes from the cam itself

5:43 AM
So the TV receiver has COAX out which goes to COAX in on your Video Grabber which is installed on your PC motherboard bus?

usb video grabber

ohhh... USB like WinTV thingy

this here is giving me a headache
this is the advances VLC capture device dialog

you think you have a headache?.... you know what you are talking about... my headache is mucho grande

i found out that i get the tv capture video on /dev/video1 so thats sorted but watching tv stream without sound reminds me of the early 1900 yeas where film without sound was a thing :))
i guess i have to have a try in vlc's own forum about that, i wonder why they did it this way, in windows you could simply choose the device via a drop down list
and the onboard audio card being a 7.1 isn't much if a help in this case
neither are the ubuntu sound settings

5:52 AM
Well for less than 10 bucks you can get a USB TV tuner with Remote Control: ebay.com/itm/…

the computer sees the signal
this is one of the few unsolved mysteries on my machine the second is how to get the display of my graphics tablet working which is connected to my second video card (both are nvidias)
thats the only i have to whine about using linux instead of windows
:))
guess that might even make two great and genuine questions, just have to refine it what i actually already have tried etc
