@ThomasWard Whiny software developers… always crying when you break their self-assembled tools. ;-P

@ThomasWard That was what I did until a few weeks ago ... then I changed to keeping the newest and the one before ... to be on a "little bit" safer side ! :)

Nobody will give me a Taco, I have been on the great taco hunt for 3 days now :-(

@TheXed Such shy creatures. What type of camouflage and ammunition do you use to hunt them?

I use a flour tortilla for camouflage and shredded Mexican blend cheese ammunition...

there's your problem - you're using crap ammo :P
it's not even real mexican cheese types ammo :P

4:07 PM
What do you recommend then?

not hunting tacos

@ThomasWard I refuse to quit

y'know
the other thing is the tacos could be hunting you
in which case everyone is doomed :p

4:27 PM
Hola.

Oh...the hunter becomes the hunted scenario...
Either way, one day I will run into a taco and I will eat a taco...

@NathanOsman Hi ! :)

Well, as long as I can at least smell it.

4:47 PM
@TheXed My flatmate's friend is a Mexican cook. For the recent dia de los muertes he opened a pop-up taqueria. That was amazing.

muertos

I am jealous...

muertes is deaths :p

@Zacharee1: good to know. i don't know any spanish. just enough latin and french to understand a bunch of it.

@Zacharee1 it is day of the dead....a celebration of their ancestors that have come before them...

4:56 PM
@TheXed sí, pero se llama "Día de los muertos" y no "Día de los muertes"

That was all the Spanish I know...well that and el bano...

His point is that it's the day of the dead (los muertos) and not the day of the deaths (las muertes)

Oddly enough, that's a phrase with the two most common exceptions to the gender word ending rule: el dia and la muerte.

shudder

5:02 PM
I like el agua
because it's a feminine word, with a masculine pronoun, but it's still feminine

Yeah, that's another one. The one that kept biting me was el cubata. The barman at my favorite bar simply wouldn't serve me until I learned to ask for un cubata. Bastard. He became a good friend though :)

it's so funny though how some words have their genders or articles switched just because they sound better that way

Like?
@Zacharee1 No, hang on, say what? Agua isn't feminine!

Holy crap! I never knew!
That WTF is it doing with a masculine pronoun?

5:07 PM
it sounds better
la agua sounds weird

Ah! No, OK, yes
It's the contraction or whatever it's called. Fair enough.
Hadn't realized it was actually female though. Thanks!

I think there are some words though that actually do change gender

I never actually learned Spanish formally, so I don't know much (anything) about its grammar. My spoken Spanish is usually good enough to pass for native, but the lack of formal training will show in this sort of thing. Let me know if you find an example, I'd be interested to learn.

We're learning so much grammar in Spanish that I think 75% of my English grammar knowledge is from Spanish class

Gender changing words, gender changing people, whats next gender changing animals?

5:16 PM
@TheXed have you heard of snails?

what about them?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword in answer: Search and download audio-only from youtube by Sandara Paty on askubuntu.com

if they were to have gender identities, they'd be changing all the time

I see...

5:18 PM
@Zacharee1 There's something similar in french. Male nouns starting with a vowel sounds have a demonstrative pronoun that sounds like the pronoun for female nouns because the latter doesn't end in a vowel itself as opposed to the male demonstrative pronoun.

o_O
I think I get what you mean... :p

@Zacharee1 Yeah, that's often the case. I had to study English as a foreign language in school, despite being a native speaker, and this has given me a far better grasp of the grammar than I would have had otherwise.
@DavidFoerster Yeah, but they don't actually change pronouns. It's just that the vowel is elided so le becomes l'.

@terdon I don't mean articles but the demonstrative adjectives "ce"/"cet" and "cette".

Ah, right. And that's precisely what you wrote so I should have realized that instead of rushing to show off my linguistic chops. Sigh.

I'm really hoping there's actually an issue with the keep aligned option here and OP didn't just neglect to right click askubuntu.com/questions/848286/…
@terdon tsk tsk tsk

Hey, by the way @DavidFoerster, I keep forgetting to ask you. Is your name normally spelled Förster and, if so, do you happen to be related to a Daniel Förster?

He said no the other time.

@terdon No and and I don't know anyone with that name.
My half-cousin's name is "Daniela" though.

@jokerdino Oh. So I don't keep forgetting to ask, I keep forgetting I asked? Damn. getting old.
Sorry David and thanks!

5:31 PM
For me, ö looks like :O just turned.
Mar 6 at 22:05, by David Foerster
And my name is actually spelled "Foerster" btw. That's not just an artefact of transliteration to basic Latin.
No one asked him.

@jokerdino means ä looks like :a just turned ? :D :D :D Hi ! :)

lol, I am simply talking about the :O smiley.

@jokerdino Oh, good. Feel a bit better about myself now.
At least I'm not a forgetfull, self-aware, pretentious know-it-all.

Hi @terdon ! :)

@terdon I think you are though

5:34 PM
Hey Cl!
@Zacharee1 I plead the 5th. Or is it the 2nd? Damn.

lol

@terdon getting older doesn't have downsides only ... ! :)

No, indeed it doesn't. I do not miss the hormonal insanity of my teens, nor the existential angst of my 20ies, thank you.

Every age has some advantages and (of course) some disadvantages ... so everybody should take it as it is ... and there is nothing special to worry about ! :)

@terdon You're invoking the right of the American people to maintain an armed militia?

5:41 PM
@NathanOsman script is ded

@DavidFoerster why shouldn't he? if he is an American person then that is his right

@DavidFoerster I forget.
@TheXed Well, I hold both an American passport and a deep aversion to guns so no, thank you. :)
I was making a joke about being forgetful.

@TheXed I'm aware of that but why would he be invoking it in that context?

Oh..I see now...

I probably should have put a ":D" smiley behind that question. :-D

5:44 PM
@Zacharee1 I'm aware of that.

EEEEEK

I was waiting for a response...
:)

@terdon Isn't my paraphrased citation just the rather uncontroversial narrower interpretation of the 2nd amendment?

Folks, today is Oli day!

@NathanOsman: What does that mean?

Q: A happy Oli♦ day!

hexafractionToday is November 11, so that means... Oli♦ day! Many of us have changed our gravatars to be Oli♦: and last year, it was even better. If you browse t...

@DavidFoerster Yes, as far as I know. It's something or other about the right to arm bears.

It means, change your gravatar
(Stupid autocorrect...)

why are you averted to firearms?

Well, somebody's jealous.
@TheXed Because I don't like machines that are designed for killing things.

5:47 PM
Isn't that what Taco Bell is?

Y'all haven't changed your gravatars yet.
I am disappoint.

@NathanOsman yes you are correct, you are dissapoint...

@terdon Did you say "armed bears"?

:)

5:51 PM
Aren't those fuckers scary enough already?
And you have even have tree climbing variants of them over there.

Nope. About as intimidating as Smoky the Bear.

Yeah, cute and cuddly:
Those claws are only to reach into holes and extract worms.

hi
Is there any real solution to the problem of 'not resuming from sleep'

Hey @Anwar ! :) Good evening ! :)

5:54 PM
@NathanOsman so like this?

@cl-netbox good evening

@DavidFoerster yeah, pretty much.

@Anwar yes there is ... ask @Serg ! :) He solves it with a huge mug of coffee - mixed with a half bottle of vodka ! : :D :D :D

really! o_O

@Anwar yes ! ... really ! :D

5:56 PM
and what's the main difference between mainline kernel and regular one? Someone said updating to mainline kernel solved it

Ubuntu probably changes a few flags.

@Anwar Did they "update" to a more recent kernel branch or did they just switch to the vanilla kernel of the same branch?

@DavidFoerster I think they installed mainline kernel
@NathanOsman thanks. Any advantages of using them?

@NathanOsman Canonical also back-ports a few patches from newer releases (like many distributors) and adds a few things (mostly kernel modules) that they find useful but which aren't in the mainline kernel. Aufs is or was an example for that as well as a bunch of out-of-tree drivers to support proprietary notebook stuff.
@Anwar Yes, the default kernel mainline flags are supposed to cover a much wider range of platforms and include a much smaller set of kernel modules for device drivers than Canonical's kernel configuration.
Canonical's aim is to provide more suitable defaults for a wide range of popular desktop and notebook systems.

@DavidFoerster much wider range of platforms?
I can then try Yakkety's kernel i think..

6:03 PM
@Anwar I think so. They have flags enabled that you wouldn't need on a reasonably modern desktop system.

but an amd64 build is only for amd64 platforms. isn't it?

yes
but that's a compiler setting not a kernel configuration setting

what other platforms can be covered for example?

Canonical also enables some kernel tracing features that they use in their user-space tools.
@Anwar Until not long ago you could still build and run Linux on an original Intel 386 machine with the default main-line kernel configuration. That support is now completely removed (no flag to re-enable it).
Now you need a platform that supports at least Intel 586, I believe.

they are considered same platforms i guess...

6:08 PM
There's a bunch of other stuff in the kernel for backwards compatibility with systems that are over 10 years old.

You meant those as wider range of platforms?

@Anwar I'd say they're part of the same platform family, namely i386. But that name is historical.
@Anwar That and some other features that aren't necessarily tied to a particular platform.

hmm....

So, Canonical gets rid of features that are irrelevant for the vast majority of its potential user base and enables or adds features that it deems relevant for them.

hmm

6:12 PM
I presume they base that on statistics about the hardware of the systems on which Ubuntu is installed.
I'm not aware that there's any such thing available for the mainline kernel.
So the mainline kernel developers are more conservative on top of having a wider target group.

So, the advantage of using Ubuntu kernel is these can contain drivers for latest hardwares?

@DavidFoerster right, I forgot about aufs.

@Anwar: That's probably one of the more notable advantages (to users) to some extent.

Thanks. got it. I thought same
@DavidFoerster are you familiar with aufs things? can you see if this makes sense? askubuntu.com/a/421697/61218

Canonical's (and other distributors') kernels usually lag behind the mainline kernel development due to their release schedule. As such they have fewer drivers available but often more drivers enabled to be shipped without a kernel recompilation.

6:18 PM
@DavidFoerster hmm... I used to use a Wimax modem for which 64 bit driver was rare. And in kernel 4.. series they dropped the driver for 32bit also. Forced me to switch arch

The other important advantage of Canonical's kernel is that they tested it thoroughly to work together with the other packages shipped in the same release and especially with their certified hardware.
@Anwar Then the driver was probably just in "staging". Normally drivers aren't dropped that quickly.

@DavidFoerster yes. it was in staging for some years. and it shipped as compiled driver

Staging drivers are dropped when Linus thinks their quality is not up to his standards (without a perceivable effort for improvement on the side of the maintainers) or if there's no maintainer for them.

I read the reason. They said the quality is not good and it seems it was also unmaintained

exactly

6:22 PM
I had instruction and source for compilation for 32bit but never dared to try. It's painful

@Anwar I'm not really familiar with aufs. I played around with it once out of curiosity but that was long ago.

@DavidFoerster ok :)

Meta post incoming...

what is these linux-image-hwe-edge kernels?

wut

6:23 PM
I'm surprised that there are still WiMax providers around. I though that was a dying technology.
In Germany the licenses for that radio frequency spectrum are about to be revoked for lack of use.

@DavidFoerster Exactly. It's dying here also. But we're not in good sync with most developed countries

@Anwar hwe... Hardware enablement, maybe.

The IEEE working group for WiMax, 802.16, was dissolved in 2014 for lack of interest.

@NathanOsman probably.... I found them in canonical-kernel-ppa. Don't know how useful would those be

@Anwar If you know the name of the driver you can search for the corresponding .ko file in the kernel package (and its extra package).

6:27 PM
@DavidFoerster I tried finding ... it wasn't there and it was officially declared.
the name was bcm_wimax

Yeah, Broadcom is known for not providing or maintaining good Linux drivers.

Q: Happy Oli Day 2016!

Nathan OsmanIn case you are wondering what this is all about, I'll direct you to this related question: A happy Oli♦ day! Basically, we are celebrating our beloved moderator Oli. It's not his birthday, as since rumors suggest, but rather the anniversary of his becoming an Ubuntu member. Or to put it another...

There were go.

6:32 PM
Remember that Oli day only happens on a leap year?!

Uh... it is a leap year.

@jokerdino technically, this is a leap year

@NathanOsman Was it a tradition?

@Anwar: If you look at all the linux-image-* packages built from the linux source package you'll find that there are many variants for 1) different platforms within the same architecture and 2) tuning for different use cases.

it's just that the coming February isn't

6:33 PM
@Anwar it has been.

@Anwar : Here you find more information -> wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack :)

Just pointing it out that we last had our Oli day on 2012.

There used to be linux-image-server packages with less device driver support and a lower scheduler "tick" frequency.

@DavidFoerster what happened to those?

@jokerdino I wasn't active at that time I think
I remember en event though...everyone changing the gravatar
@cl-netbox Thanks. I read that page.

6:35 PM
@NathanOsman I think they were dropped because Linux now has a feature that allows the system to run tickless in most situations where ticks aren't needed and that is considered stable and compatible with most device drivers since a while.

Ah.
And I suppose anyone who knows they don't need all the drivers is smart enough to compile the kernel themselves.

Also, storage, main memory and internet bandwidth became so cheap that the relatively larger kernels and kernel packages ceased to be an issue.
Exactly.

There was also a lowlatency kernel variant that probably became obsolete for the same tick frequency reason. Now you can just tweak up the frequency for a more responsive system since the scheduler usually skips them anyway.

@Rinzwind a few hours to go, but this is what it is going to look like (name will be different). Works better now then I ever assumed :)

6:41 PM
OK. I'm installing linux-image-lts-yakkety

^that's awesome

@Anwar Thanks :)

@JacobVlijm :)

@Anwar I'd do the same. If you're missing support for a device that's supported in a more recent kernel branch there's a good chance of a Git repository to pop up with a back-port of that module for older kernels.

6:46 PM
@DavidFoerster hmm... I am installing linux-generic-hwe... instead

By the way, I'm running a custom build of linux-generic-lts-xenial with most of the driver modules stripped out and enabled xz compression for the kernel and its modules.

ah. Great! How much it needed to be built?

@Rinzwind Fun but not free. And the OSS ext2fs extensions i don't think work with win10

counterargument: software on windows does not need to be free >:)

i did include your comment into the answer in case anyone prunes comments.
Though I doubt they will pay for a solution if they can just use say an external USB air something cheaper

6:50 PM
:D
sure but hey it IS windows :+)

@Anwar What do you mean? preparation? raw build time?

@DavidFoerster build time

About 10–15 minutes on my system, but I have an old dual-core Intel Core2.

and total time?

I spent about 3 or 4 hours to go through the kernel configuration (at least the relevant parts for my hardware) and research settings that I didn't understand.
But that's a one-time thing
Now it's down to git fetch && git rebase && ./my-kernel-build-script.sh && sudo dpkg -i.

6:54 PM
Very Nice!

That usually takes about 20–25 minutes or so because dkms needs to rebuild the Nvidia graphics driver module for the new kernel.
It would be more for additional dkms modules.
But I only have nvidia (very big) and vhba (quite small).

need to restart to check resuming...

I remember that the virtualbox module also took a few minutes to build back when i still had it.

7:19 PM
American game shows are mind-numbingly stupid.

The majority of TV is mind-numbingly stupid.
And that's coming from a country with a well funded public television system.
… that could be so much better if it didn't try to compete in the race to the bottom with private TV channels.
Every few years they want more money to "stay competitive" with private TV.
… even though the whole point of public TV is that it doesn't have to compete with anyone.

Start with that.

@NathanOsman How do I get the gui for it?

For the network manager?

9:14 PM
@NathanOsman Yeah

Unfortunately, I'll not sure. I don't use XFCE very often.

@NathanOsman Is there a way to install a gtk version of network manager?

I'm not sure. That's a good question.

ok
Should I use WICD instead?

That's definitely an option.
My experiences with WICD have been both good and bad.

Can I use multiple interfaces @ the same time in WICD?

@SQuirel I wish I could remember...
I think so.
But I'm not sure.

It reloads the page?
Oooooooooh.
So that's why the tool is mod-only.

But although after that I got Oli's icon in my footer bar, in chat I still saw my standard icon. Needed another manual F5.
