Yeah, that's another one. The one that kept biting me was el cubata. The barman at my favorite bar simply wouldn't serve me until I learned to ask for un cubata. Bastard. He became a good friend though :)
I never actually learned Spanish formally, so I don't know much (anything) about its grammar. My spoken Spanish is usually good enough to pass for native, but the lack of formal training will show in this sort of thing. Let me know if you find an example, I'd be interested to learn.
@Zacharee1 There's something similar in french. Male nouns starting with a vowel sounds have a demonstrative pronoun that sounds like the pronoun for female nouns because the latter doesn't end in a vowel itself as opposed to the male demonstrative pronoun.
@Zacharee1 Yeah, that's often the case. I had to study English as a foreign language in school, despite being a native speaker, and this has given me a far better grasp of the grammar than I would have had otherwise.
@DavidFoerster Yeah, but they don't actually change pronouns. It's just that the vowel is elided so le becomes l'.

@NathanOsman Canonical also back-ports a few patches from newer releases (like many distributors) and adds a few things (mostly kernel modules) that they find useful but which aren't in the mainline kernel. Aufs is or was an example for that as well as a bunch of out-of-tree drivers to support proprietary notebook stuff.
@Anwar Yes, the default kernel mainline flags are supposed to cover a much wider range of platforms and include a much smaller set of kernel modules for device drivers than Canonical's kernel configuration.
Canonical's aim is to provide more suitable defaults for a wide range of popular desktop and notebook systems.
Canonical also enables some kernel tracing features that they use in their user-space tools.
@Anwar Until not long ago you could still build and run Linux on an original Intel 386 machine with the default main-line kernel configuration. That support is now completely removed (no flag to re-enable it).
Now you need a platform that supports at least Intel 586, I believe.
So, Canonical gets rid of features that are irrelevant for the vast majority of its potential user base and enables or adds features that it deems relevant for them.
Canonical's (and other distributors') kernels usually lag behind the mainline kernel development due to their release schedule. As such they have fewer drivers available but often more drivers enabled to be shipped without a kernel recompilation.
@DavidFoerster hmm... I used to use a Wimax modem for which 64 bit driver was rare. And in kernel 4.. series they dropped the driver for 32bit also. Forced me to switch arch
The other important advantage of Canonical's kernel is that they tested it thoroughly to work together with the other packages shipped in the same release and especially with their certified hardware.
@Anwar Then the driver was probably just in "staging". Normally drivers aren't dropped that quickly.
Staging drivers are dropped when Linus thinks their quality is not up to his standards (without a perceivable effort for improvement on the side of the maintainers) or if there's no maintainer for them.

Basically, we are celebrating our beloved moderator Oli. It's not his birthday, as since rumors suggest, but rather the anniversary of his becoming an Ubuntu member. Or to put it another...
@Anwar: If you look at all the linux-image-* packages built from the linux source package you'll find that there are many variants for 1) different platforms within the same architecture and 2) tuning for different use cases.
@NathanOsman I think they were dropped because Linux now has a feature that allows the system to run tickless in most situations where ticks aren't needed and that is considered stable and compatible with most device drivers since a while.
There was also a lowlatency kernel variant that probably became obsolete for the same tick frequency reason. Now you can just tweak up the frequency for a more responsive system since the scheduler usually skips them anyway.
@Anwar I'd do the same. If you're missing support for a device that's supported in a more recent kernel branch there's a good chance of a Git repository to pop up with a back-port of that module for older kernels.
By the way, I'm running a custom build of linux-generic-lts-xenial with most of the driver modules stripped out and enabled xz compression for the kernel and its modules.
I spent about 3 or 4 hours to go through the kernel configuration (at least the relevant parts for my hardware) and research settings that I didn't understand.
But that's a one-time thing
Now it's down to git fetch && git rebase && ./my-kernel-build-script.sh && sudo dpkg -i.
