12:20 PM
hellooo
anybody here

hi there

Hi Zanna you are my favourite.....how can i make a shortcut in ubuntu
for folder
on desktop
still learning linux

what's the path to the folder?

wait
/var/www/html/laravel/ober24
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime!

haha

12:24 PM
:)
there is no simple right click and send to desktop as shortcut

ln -s /var/www/html/laravel/ober24 ~/Desktop/ober24

ok
cool
thank you
do you spend more than 10 hours per day in front of a computer @Zanna

any time... but probably there is a right click thing

yes
but she is wonderful, so it's all good.

@lewis4u I was just thinking that I spent too much time at my computer this week haha
@jokerdino <333

12:28 PM
<345

oh it could go on & on

I'm so silly.

i spend maybe even more....but anyway it would be an honor to have you as a friend beside this chat....if you have other social media profile/account

o.O

@lewis4u I am always here though
you can visit any time

12:30 PM
i know...but what when you are not
:d
:D

You should try 2 minutes later in that case.

how can i send you a message
hahahahaha
@jokerdino
LOL

Hm, that's not a joke.

i know....and that makes it more funny because it is true

haha let's say if I feel like talking I will be here

12:31 PM
just come back in 2 min
ok
Thank you anyway
you are the best

@lewis4u OK, that's actually a joke.

@jokerdino no it isn't
i must go now...farewell to you all

catch you later :) :)

bye bye

cya
@Zanna I guess it's a normal thing now.

12:36 PM
@jokerdino I guess so, but thanks for the appreciation <3
@jokerdino that's good, otherwise I will be being silly by myself

@Zanna :)

Hello.

Hi

@Zanna whats up?

@TheXed I am a troublemaker today... I make comment-answers, VTC everything unless it's in the queue in which case I vote to leave open haha
but in 16.10 I finally have multi-touch

12:50 PM
@Zanna how is that helpful?

and my dad keeps sending me nice-to-hear messages about how Linux just works...
multitouch? well I can do 2-finger scrolling scrolls gleefully through the chat

No, I meant how is being a troublemaker helpful?

it's not helpful at all, I should close the window and go away

@Zanna and any other windows that you might have open...I hear it cold outside...

heh It's not really cold for October in UK...

1:01 PM
Oh...well it is cold here...at least compared to a week ago...

where is that?

North Central IL

I like the icon

iirc it displays usage icon per partition

2:19 PM
char *VTC = "non-ubuntu";
how is this unclear ?

2:59 PM

Speaking of unclear, is this? Or is it just me not getting it? askubuntu.com/questions/442924

i don't really understand what's going on in the question

That makes two of us at least...

OP appears to have ditched avconv in favor of ffmpeg
so probably no repro?
not sure

3:10 PM
It might be possible to reproduce the problem if I could understand it!

looks like OP already gave up and abandoned the question
good luck getting OP to clarify :p

@Zanna nonrepro

mod hammer = dropped
nice, CV saved

@terdon many thanks :D

np

3:34 PM
@terdon thanks

Well, hey, that was a popular decision then :)

4:29 PM
@Zacharee1 --^

somebody is wiggling their phone or calculator next to window , and it's reflecting sunlight into my eyes
god, i wanna smash that piece of . . .technology

JAVA HAS REPL NOW?!
WOOOOOOO

what ?

@Serg It's worse for sun reflection when you're driving and the passenger does that and blinds you. :O

4:33 PM
@Terrance at least you have legitimate reason to tell the passenger to stop doing that. I'm in a public place of sorts

@Serg Good point. =)

so java is a bit more pythonic for learning eval now.

Stupidity that we call "college campus" is to make everything bright, everything open, everything uncomfortable. Administration totally has no idea what students really need - that's sleep, coffee, and maybe medication for nervous breakdowns because you've tons of homework and/or exams with a professor that is basically useless
But hey . . . how's everybody's day going otherwise ?

Elated now that we have REPL for java
this is amazing.
It's now official. Java > Python

5:07 PM
GAH
stupid network is stupid

@KazWolfe not so fast, boy
I don't see people writing shiz ton of appindicators and whatnot in Java

@Serg soz, we has repl
and we're too lazy to write app indicators
tho i might push a PR to you replacing all of your Python code with Java code :D

Nah, thanks , I'll stick with python for now
Two coughing and sneezing girls next to me . . . .great . . .

make a move! :~D

Would be better if you were between them

5:16 PM
not the type of "female charms" that I enjoy . . . besides they're not asian

i am so going to hell. and i love that.

5:31 PM
Tomorrow is Java 9 ZBB!
Woohoo!

Java.....Boo....Hiss....... HP Remote consoles get blocked due to new Java updates. :(

5:57 PM
Hello?
I'm trying to find KP_Enter or KP_Return or whatever it is called

WOOO, I'm pretty sure I've fixed the flickering menu problem in my indicator . . . I'll need to polish the code before commiting it to github, but I zink I got it

@KazWolfe here someone did it to himself: askubuntu.com/questions/839302/…

user136984
6:14 PM
In order to be able to upgrade to 16.10 I need to increase the size of the partition /boot is on. What will the name of the partition be and can I just use a LiveUSB to increase the partition size using something like GParted? And are there any other issues I should be aware of with changing the partition size? Like I heard about it potentially affecting other partitions.

@ParanoidPanda run df /boot ,what does it say ?

user136984
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2         241965 140752     88721  62% /boot

user136984
do-release-upgrade says I need to clear something like 30MB but I have removed all but the latest kernel from there so I can't really do much else without changing the partition size, can I?

user136984
And last time I asked here everyone said something different, and they all said that everyone else's methods were bad so I didn't know who to go with and I ended up not going with anyone's method, but now I don't know what to do as removing old kernels is not the solution any more because there are no more to remove.

user136984
@Serg: Any ideas?

6:18 PM
@ParanoidPanda you're absolutely certain all the old kernels are removed?

So, /dev/sda2 is your partitions of interest. Boot up live USB and increase it's size however you please.

including ones that were not removed by autoremove?

user136984
@ThomasWard: Yes, certain of it.

user136984
I manually removed all but the latest.

What df tells me is that you have

user136984
6:19 PM
@Serg: And that can't cause any trouble at all with anything else?

90850304 bytes of free space there
( that's 1024*88721 )

user136984
Well, this seems to be the contents:

user136984
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  1242701 Oct 12 16:47 abi-4.4.0-43-generic
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   189760 Oct 12 16:47 config-4.4.0-43-generic
drwx------ 6 root root     4096 Jan  1  1970 efi
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root     1024 Oct 18 20:31 grub

drwx------ 2 root root    12288 May 15 17:52 lost+found

user136984
So it seems as though there is more in there than I thought.

user136984
But I did tell it to purge all but the latest kernel and I told it specifically which packages to remove.

user136984
6:21 PM
Is there anything from there which I can safely remove? @Serg

That seems to be it . . .
Does it complain about /tmp at all or only about /boot ?

user136984
Only /boot.

why tf do people have such tiny boot partitions?
am i the only one with a good 4 GB?

user136984
Well, in future I will manually partition, but this time I used the installer's auto option...

@KazWolfe autoconfigured by system , i suppose

6:25 PM
@ParanoidPanda what about these two:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 37266052 Sep  4 18:11 initrd.img-4.4.0-34-generic.old-dkms
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 37278756 Sep  4 18:12 initrd.img-4.4.0-36-generic.old-dkms

278.8 Mb for me

also my college somehow makes amazing burritos.

user136984
@KazWolfe Yes, I was thinking about them. What are they and can I safely remove them?

@KazWolfe ikr ? There's a cafeteria where korean folks are making these amazing sausage wraps.

they look like pre-DKMS ramdisks
serg what is with your obsession with asian culture?

6:28 PM
@KazWolfe I don't know, but i love it

Q: purging old kernels fails to remove old initrd files

Christopher ScottCan't explain why... I assume it isn't safe to simply manually delete them, so some guidance would be appreciated. Here's a ls of my /boot directory (obviously, I'm running the 3.13.0-51 kernel): -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1164671 Apr 15 09:03 abi-3.13.0-51-generic -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 165762 A...

Also,new recent obsession : blond Asian girls . . .

@ParanoidPanda They look safe as long as there's no kernel tied to them.

user136984
@Serg: I haven't met any blond Asians.

^--
i've seen dyed hair, but nothing natural before.

user136984
6:29 PM
And I don't really like blonds in general anyway though.

Huyna
@_@

user136984
Well, I don't mind them as people, but I'm not attracted to them.

a nice looking blonde is better than a bad-looking brunette.
also am i the only guy who just can't stand makeup?

@KazWolfe want to say something, but . . . i think that's kind of true . . .
@KazWolfe i don't really like make up either

user136984
@KazWolfe: That is another thing I can't stand about most people, unless it is done very well, it looks awful.

6:31 PM
really well, or done really lightly.

user136984
I'd prefer it not to be there at all, but everyone else seems to disagree with me for some reason...

user136984
@KazWolfe Agreed, lightly is better though or none at all.

as in, maybe some very minor touchups and cleanups can look better than nothing, but still.
if you go all out, there's something... uncanny.

user136984
Anyway, so you think that I can just delete these .old-dkms things? Do I need to do it through DKMS or am I safe to just delete the files?

If I lose the rest of my hair, it's because I've pulled it out.
I can't figure out where this 301 is coming from...

6:32 PM
@ParanoidPanda make a backup, but i tihnk you're safe

user136984
@KazWolfe I generally prefer people's natural look.

user136984
@KazWolfe: So I can just do a sudo rm?

@ParanoidPanda i mean, i've met (and crushed on to no avail) girls that looked good without makeup, but looked even better with just very tiny minor touchups.
@ParanoidPanda yep

@KazWolfe I've bypassed the cache.
No difference.

6:34 PM
@NathanOsman 301s are still cached by the browser

I'm not using a browser.

i don't know why, but they're really sticky.

I'm making HTTP requests directly in a terminal.

oh, then...
Does wget or curl cache?
(though i've just stopped using 301s altogether. 302 works fine and i can reverse it without hell)

@KazWolfe curl shouldn't be caching.

6:36 PM
your server may be caching

Well, no homework is done, but at least I figured out my flickering indicator. yay

it had a 301 at one point, it cached it, and it's not letting go

curl -s -D - georgethedev.xyz -o /dev/null
Try it for yourself ---^

i wish i was in a programming class so that i can just accidentally do homework

Keeps issuing a 301 to http://george for some really stupid reason.

6:37 PM

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH THE REAL NATHAN OSMAN?!

You do realize WordPress is written in PHP, right?

@NathanOsman why does your domain point to george ?

The real Nathan would never use WordPress.

6:39 PM
@Serg That's what we're trying to figure out... :D

apache config?

^ maybe that

I thought that at first too but... I can attach to the container itself and issue an HTTP request to the URL and it works.
Here's what I have: Traefik (HTTP load balancer) => Apache/PHP container.
I don't think WordPress is causing the redirect, so it's either Apache or Traefik.

so... is Traefik cacheing the redirect?

user136984
@KazWolfe: Well, I deleted them, that should give me enough space (it only wanted 30 more MB). I will try the upgrade now, wish me luck! :D

6:41 PM
(Although if anyone can come up with a credible explanation for how WordPress is doing this, I'm all ears.)

break a leg!
@NathanOsman simple: wordpress is dumb
and/or a plugin is 301ing it in a weird way

@KazWolfe I have restarted and rebuilt the container - no luck.
@KazWolfe But then why does it work when I issue an HTTP request directly to the Apache/PHP container?
This is so frustrating.

@NathanOsman are you making the request to the domain name or an IP?

curl does a lookup on georgethedev.xyz and sends an HTTP request to the IP with the Host: header set.
When I had it enabled, the HTTP => HTTPS redirect was working...

so... if you're requesting from inside the container, you're querying to 45.33.X, right?
or does your hosts reflect the container as georgethedev.xyz?

6:45 PM
The container is named "george".
But its hostname is bea6b7ce3c44, apparently.

but does /etc/hosts resolve georgethedev.xyz back to 127.0.0.1?

Hmm... good question...

what happens if you ping it from within the container?

127.0.0.1	localhost
::1	localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0	ip6-localnet
ff00::0	ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1	ip6-allnodes
ff02::2	ip6-allrouters
172.18.0.10	bea6b7ce3c44
^--- /etc/hosts in the container
AHA!!!
It is the container issuing redirects.
172.18.0.11 - - [19/Oct/2016:18:47:29 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 301 214 "-" "curl/7.47.0"
^--- logs

thanks for da ip

6:48 PM
Er, that's an internal IP... :P

i know your internal IP now >:D

Yeah, and the second the container restarts you won't :D
AH00558: apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 172.18.0.10. Set the 'ServerName' directive globally to suppress this message
Interesting...

you can ignore that

I still think Apache is at fault though.

wow, that was stressful
just flashed a $500 phone
but, it was a success!

6:56 PM
Library sounds like dentist office
Whole lotta drilling
because construction . . .

@Mateo What did you flash?

the mx5 pro
bought an android one, flashed it to ubuntu
there is is next to the mx4

yawns
someone should give me an IV of coffee

can note 4 have Ubuntu Touch on it ?
@ThomasWard how about I'll give you java in vi ?

7:12 PM
won't work sorry

How to be hated by everyone in my class.
Use my internet connection to snipe the preferred research topic before anybody else can.

lol

@Mateo I thought about buying one of those but I couldn't find any in stock at the time...
@KazWolfe how to be hated by an entire school, unplug the inbound internet connection...

@TheXed same, so I just had to get the android one...

Yeah that was when I decided to get the OP2

7:27 PM
yeah, it wasn't an easy process to flash it

@ThomasWard he was using mint :(

@Anwar ANd you didn't notice the tag.
lockdown on the question is confirmed though, closed.

@ThomasWard I noticed it. but Terdon said other day, if a question can be turned into an OT, we should not close it
I disagreed with him. But tried this time to see how that works
It has just become another point.

@Anwar If someone edits it to be non mint, I'm happy to reopen.
That's why there's 'reopen' buttons.

i should get wolfbot back up

7:32 PM
@ThomasWard I would have removed the tag, but as you see, my suggestion for using gedit didn't work for them because mint removed it
or I don't know if they were using some other mint variants like mint-kde

well, it's closed. Next best thing is prune the answer, but meh
Wait you did that

I did it already :)

7:54 PM
More hacking later and I think I may have found a possible cause.
/
Host: george:80
User-Agent: curl/7.47.0
Accept: */*
X-Forwarded-For: [...]
X-Forwarded-Host: george:80
X-Forwarded-Proto: https
X-Forwarded-Server: 96a859ae92ac
Accept-Encoding: gzip
I captured that request that Traefik is passing to Apache
And sure enough, it's using the container name as the host.
So maybe WordPress is doing this.

adjust the WordPress configs.
specify a different hostname

Well, I can work around this if I can get Traefik to send a correct HTTP header.

Anyone want a easy challenge? Is that a oxymoron?

@TheXed depends on what's the challenge

@TheXed 284.23425.

8:08 PM
@Serg okay, design me a computer to be built, 1k budget.

There, did I guess the right answer?
@TheXed $1k USD?

@NathanOsman no pesos :=P
Yes USD

Lol.

@TheXed Get an HP workstation: www8.hp.com/us/en/workstations/z240.html
Their consumer desktops and laptops may be terrible but their workstations are supposed to be good.

8:09 PM
@Serg I give you a 1k budget and you give me a 500 dollar budget build :=P

@TheXed you need to save for the family ;)

@Serg no I don't

or spend the rest on yourself

@KazWolfe I am saving for the family...I have 6k to spend...

8:10 PM
don't buy a prebuilt ;-;
make your own

@NathanOsman I am not buying a prebuilt work station...

Lol, then you're on your own.
I've never built one.

@NathanOsman then you are awesome

Yowsup!

there's tons of designs on youtube, i mean . . . srszly
@ByteCommander howdy neighbor

8:12 PM
Go with an AMD CPU if you need to save money but stick to Intel if you need to run Dolphin.
^--- probably useless tip

@NathanOsman what is Dolphin?

@Serg Did tectonic movements dramatically speed up in the last hours or did the US conquer France, making us neighbours?
2

Wii emulator for PC.

8:15 PM
@ByteCommander let's just say interwebz make us all neighbors

@NathanOsman how come I have never seen this Emulator?

That's a point.

@TheXed You never looked? :D
You need a pretty beefy PC to run it well though.
And it works best with an Intel CPU for some reason.

I got myself a 3rd student it seems

So that's why I haven't used it at all. I've got an AMD CPU.

8:17 PM
but i wanna pass out , because 3 hours of sleep
fsck

You need a chat ban again?
(to be able to get some sleep)

@ByteCommander I need a college ban so i don't have to deal with classes and homework anymore

@NathanOsman I am going to see just how bad it runs on AMD...

Close Q (exact repost of the same question by the same user a few days earlier) askubuntu.com/q/839362/367990

8:35 PM
130 upvotes for the sudo insults already... I'm getting mad.

That's just ridiculous :P

i need a vacation

Does it feel like an insult because it has been upvoted so much?

Somehow.
It has over 4x as many votes as my second highest question (which was actually useful) and also already more votes than my baby-calming noise wave generator answer to Oli's question...
I would prefer to get my points on serious, useful posts instead of such "joke" posts.

Interesting.
Makes sense

8:42 PM
However, better than no points, so I shouldn't complain too much :D

My highest answer has 60 goats and is accepted . . . lags behind ByteCommander dramatically

My highest question is 8
But then again, it is my only question. ;)

highest question is 22 though

@Serg You have 2 million people reached though, twice as many as me.

WOW!
320K for me

8:43 PM
that too . . .I'd like to double my goats though
aaand somebody downvoted my perfectly valid answer

seems like that someone mixed up double-goats and downgoats...

eh . . . some people are just too afraid of extra material. I hate that. By definition downvote signifies answer is not useful. My answer provides proper solution and plus some extra. People need to learn how voting system works.

@NathanOsman well Gamecube games play...

Sure , we can go around clapping to simple and short answers , but it is kind of disappointing to see when thoughtful and detailed answers get -1

@TheXed It actually works?

8:50 PM
Yeah...but it is harder then hell to play gamecube games with a keyboard
Hmm If I could only get my xbox 360 controller to work with it...
then I can get Iso's of my wii games...
and party!

@KazWolfe georgethedev.xyz \o/
It was solved by adding the "passHostHeader = true" flag to Traefik in the configuration for that website's frontend.
