??

paranoid
don't want thumbnails on disk :p

Meh...
Thanks, btw. That was just in time.

@Zacharee1 To be exact , my major is "Electrical Engineering Technology" , which involves more practical approaches and labs to circuit analysis, but also raises a thought in some employers " oh, you're not EE major, you're something similar".

@Serg so it is applied

It is . . .

12:01 AM
@ByteCommander I wonder if you can keep your rep at intervals of 200

Surely not.

"Apply to the applied student a small application of 1,000,000 amps"

Also , it was destiny . . .I was shocked with 220 V way back when I was living in Ukraine

yum

That streak will end once people stop finding my sudo insults question that interesting.

12:02 AM
fried Serg

@Serg been there, done that...

@ByteCommander you mean "pshh"
or bzzzzzt

bzzzt.

Let's just say it was . . .a POWERful experience
But CURRENTly, I probably should get a burger

@Serg if that'll stop these "jokes"

12:04 AM
@Zacharee1 POTENTIALLY
#nailedit

the tweezers I was using had black tips afterwards, but the fuse jumped out fast enough, so I only got psychologically shocked, not electrically...
@Serg You couldn't resist the opporTUNAty, right?

@ByteCommander what were you doing sticking tweezers in electrical stuff

^ resistance . . .

OMG
GUYS
These are terrible

We've charged up this chatroom pretty well with puns

12:05 AM
I just don't have the capacity
this is battery of the mind

@Zacharee1 you've become one of us , yay

I'm drained

@Zacharee1 Dunno... I was a little kid and little kids do stupid stuff they are not supposed to do.

@ByteCommander When I was a little kid I took apart an old IBM. No shocks. Over the summer, I was poking at the CRT in an iMac G3 with a screwdriver. You can imagine how that went

Learned my lesson from that though, so it was useful.
Oy.

12:07 AM
Suffice to say, boy was I awake after that

CRT is some magnitudes above 230V though, depending on what spot you hit.

yep
I'm a regular superhero

@Zacharee1 not wearing glasses ATM, so misread that as "rectangular superhero"
hmmm, spongebob and superman crossover ?

12:11 AM
@Serg already been done

Spongebob in a Mermaid Man costume.

@Serg seems like previously declared arrays behave the same as mallocated arrays then, I thought maybe because the size of the former needs to be known at compile time, sizeof() could work, but makes sense that it doesn't
you can use the null character to mark the end of the string and just reverse the characters before the null

it makes sense because arrays are passed by reference not by value
but string already contains null character by default

not on C

a[7] is 0 - 5 is all chars, 6th value is \0
also . . . google results for C strings . . . dammit . . .

12:15 AM
most string.h functions will add the null byte (though you need to read the man pages, since on some conditions some functions will not include the null byte), but when you declare char word[7] and manipulate the chars manually you need to write the null byte explicitly
and word[7] isn't in the array boundaries
int length = 7;
char word[length];

the indexes goes from 0 to 6

> For character strings, the standard library uses the convention that strings are null-terminated: a string of n characters is represented as an array of n + 1 elements, the last of which is a "NUL" character. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_string_handling#wchar_t)

the null byte must be at word[6]

yup, that's exactly what i said here : chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/32980374#32980374

oh, my bad, thought you were trying to access word[7] because of the comment in the source code, which could coincidentaly be a null byte

that commented out code was just for testing
gaaaah, not enough time for my hamburger and coffee

12:20 AM
> Maybe not the most embarrassing thing in the world, but it was certainly funny.

When I was moving out of my apartment in China, I was feeling pretty good about going home and pretty upbeat about my Chinese skills. I’d been working on them really hard for the last year after all, and as far as I was concerned I rocked.

So I went downstairs to the office of the apartment manager, and confidently told her that I’d left my key with my roommate.

She looked really confused, but after some reiteration and pantomiming from me we got there. I was a bit dissapointed that I hadn’t been able to co

functions like strncpy for example, will include the terminating null byte in the string, but if you tried to do char word[10]; strncpy( word, "Hello World!", 10); it would not include the null byte, so you would need to explicitly add it later if you wanted to read what you copied
@Zacharee1 I heard ma in chinese can be horse or mother depending on how you pronuntiate it :p

yep
that's tonal language for you
> Here is something a friend once did when he was studying Russian.

He met a pretty, young Russian girl in San Francisco that he wanted to ask out. So he said, “Vy besplatny?” when he should have said, “Vy svobodny?” Both mean “Are you free,” but “besplatny” means free in the sense of “cost nothing.”
@Serg

12:35 AM
@Zacharee1 lol. That's Russian for you - the language where two words may be same with different meaning and shizton of grammar rules

@Serg sounds like German...

actually sounds a lot like English heh

seems to apply to all languages... except Python maybe ;-)

Ugh, at least English is easier to pick up than Russian. Learned that via helping my Chinese friends who are studying abroad in Russia

english - 1 article for all genders
portuguese - 2 articles, 1 for each gender
german - 3 articles, I'd imagine 1 for each gender and 1 for objects, but NAH, why make this language easy?
Der (maskulin), Die (Feminin), Das (Neutral)
Then you have Fraulein (lady), and instead of using Die and make it easy to deduce, they decide to use Das

12:40 AM
ja, sprachen Deutsch, nicht firshtein

I've learned german a while back, but has been a while I don't practice it, forgot many things

@Serg I think you just killed @ByteCommander with that "German"

@ByteCommander I think it's quite possible for two people nto talk exclusively in Python
@Zacharee1 ikr, I'm so pro
insults for the programmers: I'm gonna foobar the char out of you

Welp, did a fresh install of 16.10, maybe I can successfully work on here
Or not.. literally just got an "Experienced internal error" message ._.

4:27 AM
@SmokeDetector applause

4:48 AM
Atom is coming along nicely.
However, Sublime still runs circles around it in terms of performance.

5:15 AM
looks like a combination of Arch and RHEL resources gave me a solution to a problem in Ubuntu 16.10... odd situation

5:48 AM
@edwinksl it was at a RHEL talk that I got my suspend fix
and Arch wiki gave me my hibernate fix!

!!!

hmmm should I or shouldn't I install 16.10... my system is nice, everything works... but that shiny new kernel...
I was just thinking I hadn't seen you around much lately... busy these days?

indeed

yeah I'm gonna install... but what flavor?

stick to mate?

5:55 AM
I like to change around... but still a loooong way from that tag badge
and MATE is... nice. Looks good. Stays out of my way.

6:48 AM
Zesty Zapus eh? Nice... The question is, what comes after Z?
oh I just got a new thing... protect questions...

2 hours later…
8:21 AM
@ByteCommander You're all there already. Just take another one
@WinEunuuchs2Unix You wanted something?

@Zanna we probably go back to A, It's just a fun thing by our overlord.

Hmm... nobody is saying anything funny.

I did not know you wanted funny :P

@NathanOsman Awoo?

I want a replacement for Aptana :P any ideas?

8:28 AM
@Rinzwind sounds like the only way forward... rsync is right now doing my extra backups before upgrade ^_^

@Serg remind me to pull you into a private room for a nice chat.

@Rinzwind idek what that is!

@KazWolfe thanks :)

Gonna give Atom a test run :)
waits for @KazWolfe to post the wiki for Atom

8:37 AM
An atom is the smallest constituent unit of ordinary matter that has the properties of a chemical element. Every solid, liquid, gas, and plasma is composed of neutral or ionized atoms. Atoms are very small; typical sizes are around 100 pm (a ten-billionth of a meter, in the short scale). However, atoms do not have well-defined boundaries, and there are different ways to define their size that give different but close values. Atoms are small enough that attempting to predict their behavior using classical physics - as if they were billiard balls, for example - gives noticeably incorrect predictions...

Intel Atom was the brand name for a line of ultra-low-voltage IA-32 and x86-64 microprocessors by Intel Corporation. Atom was mainly used in netbooks, nettops, embedded applications ranging from health care to advanced robotics, and mobile Internet devices (MIDs). The line was originally designed in 45 nm complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology and subsequent models, codenamed Cedar, used a 32 nm process. The first generation of Atom processors are based on the Bonnell microarchitecture. On 21 December 2009, Intel announced the Pine Trail platform, including new Atom processor...

What, no cows?
Atom Heart Mother is the fifth studio album by English progressive rock band Pink Floyd. It was released by Harvest and EMI Records 2 October 1970 in the UK, and by Harvest and Capitol on 10 October 1970 in the US. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, England, and was the band's first album to reach number 1 in the UK, while it reached number 55 in the US chart, eventually going gold there. A remastered CD was released in 1994 in the UK and the United States, and again in 2011. Ron Geesin, who had already influenced and collaborated with Roger Waters, made a notable contribution to...

hey Oli :)

Atom is a domain-specific language (DSL) in Haskell, for designing real-time embedded software. == History == Originally intended as a high level hardware description language, Atom was created in early 2007 and released in open-source of April of the same year. Inspired by TRS and Bluespec, Atom compiled circuit descriptions, that were based on guarded atomic operations, or conditional term rewriting, into Verilog netlists for simulation and logic synthesis. As a hardware compiler, Atom's primary objective was to maximize the number of operations, or rules, that can execute in a given clock cycle...

Q: conflict mbr-windows and grub /boot ubuntu 16

user2282211When I switch on my computer I can see the menu from MBR from my windows 7. It shows 2 options: Windows and Ubuntu. Obviously.

@terdon Oh, that was soooo helpful :)

Well, you ask a silly question. . .:P
In all seriousness, I think the OP has two, unrelated issues: 1) grub is not installed correctly which can probably be fixed with a sudo grub-install /dev/sda and 2) there's no space in their root partition which has nothing to do with grub.

@terdon - What can you make of: In fact, I would like to use GRUB without passing through MBR?
That doesn't make any sense.
Nor is it even possible

@AndroidDev Don't assume the OP knows the right terminology. I read that as "I want to use grub without passing through the windows boot manager"
Although, strictly speaking, it is possible. GRUB can work with GPT. I doubt that's what the OP has in mind though.

11:59 AM
@terdon - Job for a dual-mod :) askubuntu.com/q/838725/518562
@terdon But then you need EFI, no?

@AndroidDev Ugh. . . If the OP chooses to repost, OK, but I see no reason to inflict that on U&L voluntarily :)
@AndroidDev AFAIK yes. My (kinda useless) point is that, strictly speaking, you could have GRUB working without an MBR.

@terdon Oh.

hi from 16.10 :)

Shoutout to all AU people here. I have forked the @WolfBot project by @KazWolfe and called it CoyoteBot. I intend to activate a CoyoteBot, but need some guidance on how to make an account for it.

@Zanna Hi from I'm too scared to upgrade :)

12:04 PM
@ParanoidPanda I was hoping it would be ____ Zebra not Zesty Zapus.
@terdon didn't know grub worked with GPT

@MarkYisri Please see @terdon about that.

@MarkYisri I like zebras :)
@AndroidDev that's cool, if it ain't broke, do not fix ;)

I have no idea. Presumably you just need to create an account and then have the bot use it. Ask Kaz, he knows since he's done it already.

Where would you put it @MarkYisri?

12:06 PM
@terdon not sure yet

@terdon Right, but if I remember correctly, you were against Kaz's bot in the meta post, so I wanted @MarkYisri to make sure you were good with it.

Possibly it could chat to and from @WolfBot
I have to go now. Just wanted to pop the idea in

@AndroidDev Well, yes, I've never seen much point to the whole bots in chat idea. But that's just my personal opinion, which I'm happy to put aside if the community wants bots.

@AndroidDev also, I didn't upgrade, I did fresh install and just brought my .bashrc and .mozilla directory with me

@Zanna Do you have a separate /home partition?

12:10 PM
@AndroidDev nah
All my stuff is in Dropbox
I made an extra backup anyway

@Zanna You trust the internet with your files?

@AndroidDev they are on my system too & backed up as well
if you mean privacy-wise, I have sensitive stuff elsewhere...

Oh geez...

Q: Can't find C: and D: disks in ubuntu 16.04

MathiCSI removed windows 10 and installed ubuntu 16.04.01. While installing I chose 2nd option (can't remember exact name but description was like erases all programs of all operating systems). Now I can't see contents of my C: and D. Can you help me. Thanks in advance.

Ouch. . .
@AndroidDev MFT?
Partition table?
MBR?

@terdon Master File Table.

12:20 PM
Yep, just found it. Thanks.

@terdon - The OP might have a chance at recovery, since NTFS stores a backup of the MFT at the end of the partition, because it is so vital.

I have no idea. The last time I was a regular user of and relatively proficient in Windows, FAT32 was still the default.

Hey anyone here who is good with nvidia stuff?

morning @ThomasWard :)

1:51 PM
Well if someone here is good with nvidia stuff can you take a look at askubuntu.com/questions/838289/… ?

2:25 PM
@Terrance Were you able to test?

Is there a reason for some of my /var/log/ log files to be emtpy?

@blade19899 Yeah. Sometimes they've not been written to since being rotated by logrotate. It's nice to have an empty ufw.log for instance.

@Zanna why is it not Zanna Zanna?

2:42 PM
Hi all :)

@Arronical Not in my situation. Does that mean that the log were not written?!?!

@edwinksl lol what is zanna as an adjective?

I am trying to paste into http://paste.ubuntu.com/ from commandline .
I tried this : 'curl --data "poster=test&syntax=text&content=hello" http://paste.ubuntu.com/' . It seems like its successfully pasting. but I can't get the resultant link.
Could someone help me here ?

@Zanna it means awesome

@edwinksl <3
@SeverusTux hmmm!! frustrating...

2:57 PM

@jokerdino is that a command ?

@jokerdino TIL ^_^

wow! . wowowowow! . This is why I love linux. "echo Hi | pastebinit -b paste.ubuntu.com" works perfect.

@AndroidDev You'll have to forgive me, I have had a massive tooth ache and it is going to be pulled today, so unfortunately I forgot what I was going to test. Refresh my memory and I'll make a note to myself to not forget.

@Terrance you where going to transfer 1000 euro to my bankaccount

@Terrance poor you :(

@Rinzwind LMAO!! ;)
@Zanna Thank you! :)

Front tooth getting extracted tonight, so I will be toothless till tomorrow when I get my new flipper to fill the gap.

I am not keen on .profile in 16.10 just blithely prepending ~/bin and ~/.local/bin to PATH without even doing if [[ -d "$HOME/bin" ]]. Seems somehow untidy to have all this stuff in my PATH that doesn't exist yet...

Haven't used 16.10 yet, so I no nothing about it.

@Terrance You were going to try my answer about installing Ubuntu in a dual-boot on a Mac: askubuntu.com/a/836209/518562

3:30 PM
@AndroidDev Ah yes, now I remember. Giving myself a note to test that out. The answer looks like there is no reason why it shouldn't work. I think you covered it pretty well, but I do want to still test it out. Thank you!

@ByteCommander - The solution to your question is... very sad. Screw MS. superuser.com/q/1134223/576098

4:08 PM
@ByteCommander If that seems to be the problem with GRUB being on the drive, is that because GRUB is on the same drive as Windows then? I have Windows on my system, but GRUB is on my Ubuntu drive and the updates have all installed fine into Windows.

4:28 PM
GUYSGUYSGUYS I NEED HELP please!

Hi guys. I've been away from Ubuntu since 14.04. stumbled across unity 8 video so I thought lets give it a try. But couldn't get it to work in virtualbox. it was failing at various stages. any special settings needed in virtualbox? or should I try again?

Is that Sivaji as your gravatar? Looks straight out of a history textbook.

5:03 PM
yes

I don't have anything to tell you about your virtualbox question but did you get any errors? What are the stages it was failing at?

> "Answer: Yes Acer Iconia One 7 comes with Android 5.0 which has a built in full support for Google Play Store..."
No, AOSP does not include the Play Store app.
This tablet may very well include the app, but it has nothing to do with "Android 5.0".

Well as far as I remember, first it failed to live boot. a few tries later it booted, then It crashed I guess when trying out. Later I installed it but must have taken hours to complete(felt weird ) Then it didn't boot. next time it went to login screen but was unusable
I guess 1.8GB ram and 10GB HDD was enough for the 32 bit version

@NathanOsman Yep. They are licensed separately. source.android.com/source/faqs.html

5:13 PM
@edwinksl I might give that a shot on one of my servers.

@NathanOsman 100% uptime hype

@edwinksl Dang, I should have just tried that. Just patched a kernel update.
But I am having an issue getting SNAP apps to work on my system

Q: Can GRUB be installed to separate drive that doesn't contain a Linux system?

Android DevAs the title says, can GRUB be installed to separate drive that doesn't contain a Linux system? For example, let's say I have two disks: sda, and sdb. Let's say the partition layout is something like this: Disk Partition Filesystem Size Contents --------------------------------...

@AndroidDev UEFI or BIOS on your motherboard?

@Terrance Edited

@AndroidDev OK. Quick answer is Yes it can be done. I will need to go get my laptop and prove it, but it has two hard drives in it and Windows and Linux separated per drive, but it worked fine.

@Terrance Make sure you read the question very carefully.

6:22 PM
@AndroidDev That's always why I like to have proof before I answer a question. I don't want to give you an answer that I have not tested myself. :)

6:44 PM
This is crazy!

@MarkYisri You wanted me?

@ByteCommander 100 upvotes in 3 days? Don't you only get so many points though for each day allowed?

@Terrance 200/day is the limit

@Terrance right

6:49 PM
@ByteCommander So you only got 600 points so far out of 1000?

500.

Ah
Better than I have ever got so far. Congrats! :D

A front has released through US Democratic media an elaborate story accusing Julian Assange of paedophillia & taking US$1million from Russia

@Terrance Q votes are +5 only.
And some got lost due to rep cap.

wtf. why is it always "o noes think of the childrens!"

6:51 PM
Released in this situation, that news can't really be taken seriously, can it?

@ByteCommander Wait, that's a question?

still. everything online is meant to squash the four evils i tihnk

75+137+105+130 = 447 points from that question (out of 500 possible without rep cap)
Where stays my Great Question gold badge though?

That's still pretty sweet though. =)

6:57 PM
@KazWolfe That's Famous Question (10k views). However, I should also get Great Question (+100 score) now.

oh my mistake i got those two confused.
i is still sleepy woof. *yawns*
