@Sinoosh I think the main influence that helped me to get advanced knowledge about Ubuntu is this site here. Reading other people's answers and trying to answer questions yourself, researching what you need for it, is a great way to dive in.

Hi all :D

hi @SeverusTux :)

I gtg, laters x

bye :)
Who uses xubuntu here ? please

11:06 AM
not me

hm.. I wrote an answer , tested it on Ubuntu , but the OP asked for XFCE. I am almost sure it works but I need to make 100% sure. Could anyone help me ?

Offtopic because Xubuntu

lol
(back, my mum gave up waiting)

not kidding, flags were raised.

> About Xubuntu , this question should be asked on unix.stackexchange.com

11:09 AM
I remember

Sorry, didn't mean to do that.

wat ?

@ByteCommander I am doing like this, here is most better than teachers and books

user136984
Well, Xubuntu was on-topic last time I looked... But I assume there is some sort on going joke here or something which I don't know about. Or perhaps that Xubuntu used to be off-topic, I don't know... But if non of those things then I am most confused! :D

mee too
confused

11:12 AM
27 seconds...
nice spam ninja deletion time.

me so slow..
Guys, it was a joke about Xubuntu being OT because one of the questions asking about Xubuntu was flagged.

user136984
Phew...

user136984
I thought you'd all gone mad! :D

Ubuntu Kylin is also on topic.

11:19 AM
can someone explain this paragraph for me? its about "ls |xargs rm" and "rm ls"
The backtick solution works fine in some cases, but it breaks down in more complex
situations. The reason is that the output of the backtick-contained command is passed to
the command it precedes as if it had been typed at the shell. By contrast, when you use
xargs, it runs the command you specify (rm in these examples) once for each of the input
items

I see no backticks.
Can you link the original source please?

i write it from book
rm $(ls)
or rm ls

or rm $(ls /)

here ignore backticks

user136984
I need to get an iron disc with a reasonably large hole in the middle which isn't too heavy, could anyone advise?

11:24 AM
Nowadays and with Bash, you should generally prefer $(...) over `...`
It's easier to identify start and ending and you can properly nest it if needed.
The $(...) is called command substitution btw.
@ParanoidPanda Make one or buy one. :p
What for?

please read my question askubuntu.com/questions/831845/…

And why iron if it should be light?
Use aluminium or plastic or something else light instead.

user136984
@ByteCommander: I don't know where to buy one and I don't really have the ability to make one currently.

user136984
It needs to be iron.

user136984
Properties.

11:29 AM
@Sinoosh Good question. I haven't thought about those corner cases mentioned in the answer you got yet. I can just tell you that normally I personally use command substitution, only rarely xargs.
@ParanoidPanda why?

user136984
Because that is good for what I need.

shrug

user136984
I need to be able to turn it into an electromagnet.

Then take what you think is good for you.
Ah.

user136984
I need the hole in the middle so that I can easily wrap the wires around it.

11:31 AM
@ParanoidPanda would a ferrite bead work?
or more speccifically a torroid core?

But a disc is a strange (and ineffective?) shape for an electromagnet, isn't it?

user136984
@JourneymanGeek: I don't know a huge amount in this area, but I will look into those. Thanks! :)

user136984
@ByteCommander: Well, a different shape won't work for what I need.

user136984
I require only the edges to attract things.

11:35 AM
You know the magnetic field concentrates in the center?

user136984
@ByteCommander: Is there no way to reverse that?

user136984
Or get around it?

user136984
It is really required for my experiment.

@ParanoidPanda oorrr a washer...

user136984
11:38 AM
@ByteCommander: Could you upload that through i.stack.imgur.com (my annoying blocking system which I am seemingly unable to turn off)?

No.
Deal with it.
:P
Joke...
ARGH!

@ByteCommander I mod abused the hell out of it uploaded/edited it for you ;p

@JourneymanGeek Oh, thanks :)
My good old Win XP machine crashed

The only good win XP machine... is a dead XP machine ;p
3

It boots into a blue screen, saying its registry is damaged... ;___;
@JourneymanGeek No worries, it's a completely offline box I only use to keep some beloved old games alive.

11:41 AM
@ByteCommander time to rebuild the install?

But why does it have that registry probelm!?
No, I want to fix it.

@JourneymanGeek didn't expect a SU mod to say that :p

Just not sure how yet...

there's usually a backup registry
replacing the files with those might be a start
@edwinksl I run supported versions of windows ;p

11:42 AM
Booting in safe mode or with "last working configuration" didn't work yet.

@edwinksl even microsoft says it so why not an SU mod? >:)

It says it could not load \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
STOP error c0000218

@JourneymanGeek does SU close questions for unsupported/EOL versions of windows?
@Rinzwind true :p

@edwinksl Last time I posted a Win XP question it stayed around, so I don't think so.

11:43 AM
And I might have used a OS/2 VM for an answer once...

Let's do some DDG first...

12:07 PM
What's the problem with that?
Haven't seen what you said, but I guess it's not relevant for me anyway.

user136984
It's not a matter of great importance, just my username somewhere.

user136984
I prefer to keep these things separate though.

Q: Black screen on boot, no xorg error messages

DistjuboI recently installed bumblebee in order to use my discrete graphics card instead of the Intel integrated one. Now I'm left with a machine booting into a black screen. I unmistakeable bumblebee again but that did no good. The weird thing is that there are no errors in that log file. /var/log/Xor...

You've leaked more of your usernames than you think already...
I think I know at least 4 of them.
Not that it would matter to me.

user136984
12:22 PM
@ByteCommander: Really? Are any of the places I've mentioned them still on the site?

user136984
I mean not deleted yet.

No idea.
But your GitHub and Launchpad names are no real secret.
That freenode name has also been reused somewhere already IIRC.
However, why don't you just use one name for all related sites about the same topic (i.e. all the computer stuff). That's what I do. No need to worry about keeping them separate.

user136984
I don't think I have used the freenode one elsewhere, though it is possible, I do sometimes forget if I have used one elsewhere.

It sounded familiar to me.

user136984
The GitHub one is no real problem to me, though the LP one was a major blow to my attempts to separate accounts and myself from them.

user136984
12:28 PM
I it think it is rather popular though, so I would think that others would have used it elsewhere a lot.

Well, but LP, GH and AU are so close, I don't understand why you want to separate them. Especially LP and AU.
Btw, recovering a Windows system is a pain going straight up all the way from the butt to the forehead.
2
:32657010 That's your fault then. :(

user136984
Strange, for some reason that didn't ping me.

user136984
It is all going to be my fault eventually.

user136984
:P

Oh, and your YT account had the same name as your LP one.
Btw, the link to your LP is still on AU ^_^

user136984
12:31 PM
I know, I blame that on Google.

user136984
And I know about that too.

user136984
Though I think slightly harder to find. No?

user136984
Unless you were specifically looking for it.

And on LP you state your IRC name. Which is the same as the one we talked about above.
Was just a few clicks as I knew where to search for.
And it leads to your Ubuntu wiki site.
By the way, googling the first line of your About me also brings up all those accounts.

user136984
It does?

user136984
12:35 PM
What, my LP or my AU about me section?

user136984
Uhm... I have no idea... :D

user136984
When you say "all those accounts", does it bring up more than just my Wiki and LP accounts?

user136984
Well, I've changed that now on my Wiki page and my LP account about section so hopefully that problem should go away reasonably soon.

@ParanoidPanda would the wayback machine archive old versions of these pages?

user136984
12:39 PM
@ByteCommander: It's probably just a copycat site, I hope...

user136984
@edwinksl: It would, however I don't think that that many people would search there.

user136984
@ByteCommander: I tend to have the same IRC name across various IRC networks.

Hmm... Seems like my Windows registry is on a corrupt disc sector :-/

user136984
I just tend to use it for more official stuff and not a lot so it doesn't matter to me if they all have the same name and are less confusing for me.

I only have two names. One online and one offline. That simplifies things a lot. And occasionally I pick a random name that I discard later for things I don't want to keep permanently.

user136984
12:49 PM
I do what I do for two reasons: 1. I don't want to make it easy for people to track me down and 2. I don't want trouble to be able to follow me from one site to another.

for the first reason, what would tracking you down entail?

user136984
@edwinksl: I don't know, but you said you found things.

i found enough interesting things. well at least things that i found interesting
but i am not sure if that can be considered as tracking you down

user136984
Well, I hope that these "interesting things" weren't bad things.

i am asking because i am not sure what you mean by being tracked down
for instance real name is pretty easy to find

user136984
12:54 PM
Well, I should hope that there's nothing linking my real name to my real location or anything like that on the internet, but that's the sort of thing I'm worried about. I should hope that there is nothing like that there, certainly I'm not aware of it.

We can all watch you playing with your cute little fat hamsters though... >:D

user136984
I don't really mind about that... :D

user136984
@ByteCommander: Have you seen my latest upload from a few months ago?

user136984
He's got so much fatter since that video! :D

Not yet.
You didn't plant any trees in 2010, did you?

user136984
12:58 PM
He doesn't even fit in his wheel any more! :D

user136984
@ByteCommander: No

Oh wow.
It's like a fur ball with eyes.

user136984
:D

And now... it's scratching its ear and licking its foot? Weird animals...
gtg, seeya later.

user136984
That's what the majority of animals do! :D

user136984
1:00 PM
Ok, bye! :)

2:08 PM
@ParanoidPanda i am open to discussing with you what i found just so you can decide if you want to do something about it

user136984
@edwinksl: Uhm, well, is it something you would be worried about if you found it about you on the internet?

user136984
And is it something I can actually do something about?

@ParanoidPanda hmm, i am not sure actually. i am rather undecided about it

user136984
Could you give me a general idea of it without being too specific?

@ParanoidPanda uhh, not sure how unspecific i can be, but i have some hints of what your address might be
that said, addresses are prone to social engineering anyway, so if a determined person wants to find it, he/she will get it

user136984
2:13 PM
Right, do you think that if I knew about where this information is mentioned I would be able to get it removed?

@ParanoidPanda good question, i am not sure

user136984
Ok, do you have Tox?

no

Grrr.... Looks like I have exactly one 4kB bad sector on my 128GB hard disk, and as if Billy Gates had put a curse on me, it's exactly where my Windows registry was located.

@ParanoidPanda i wouldn't be worried about it though... it is not super sensitive personal information as far as i can tell (but i understand you might have different expectations)

2:16 PM
Luckily the last restore point is from January :-/

@ParanoidPanda and needless to say, i am not out to harm you :/

user136984
@edwinksl: Well, if you don't think I should be worried, then I think I will go with that.

@ParanoidPanda that's fine by me

user136984
:)

your biggest privacy concern probably lies with your own government rather than any specific individual...

2:30 PM
CVs done for today
going to spam some 4CVed questions in Regulators

user136984
@cl-netbox: uTox seems to be available now through the official Tox repos now so I am switching to that! :)

ooops

user136984
After I saw the qTox developers verbally insult the uTox one I had enough.

@ParanoidPanda so i should prefer utox to qtox?

user136984
@edwinksl: Yes, the qTox developers told Linux users that they won't support them any more with easy to install packages because they use basically don't use Windows. The developers there also had some argument with the core guys so they became anti them and stopped putting their packages in their repositories. They also insulted me and other users as well as freely using the f word and other such swear words. Insulting developers of 'rival' clients, and also neglecting bugs.

2:34 PM
@ParanoidPanda ok, good to know

user136984
uTox I think is the closest in terms of good interface design, it is getting a lot more popular now, and the guy who works on that is closely linked to the core too so he's more official.

user136984
You can now also get uTox from the official Tox repositories so it's easier to install.

Why everyone loves UnetBootin so much ?

@jokerdino no that definitely needs to be done! I make all kinds of foolish comments

6:40 PM
Hi

hi

whats up?

@Serg different browsers, had FF open.

Sigh . . . . It's difficult to have non-technical parents

@Serg are you trying to teach them linux things

6:49 PM
I can't explain them that I can't do anything if the network sucks

without calling them cheap? "you get what you pay for" ;P

@edwinksl no, mom's site doesn't load on Win 10 in Chrome. She thinks browser and computer is all the same and one. The computer works fine, just sites are loading slow
My mom doesn't even want to touch my computer. It took me pains to teach her how to use Chromebook, then switch to Win 10 ( because she was giving me sooooo much sh*t about skype)

@serg why does their network suck?

@TheXed Well, dad's streaming russian radio and mom's trying to get on a Russian social network ( which all of her friends use, for whatever reason ). So yeah, they're querying distant servers. Of course it's gonna be slow
At least I managed to switch my dad's radio to German server

I see..

7:09 PM
@Serg solution: move back to the Ukraine :p

@Zacharee1 then it's gonna be problem with querrying american servers XD

@Serg we have relays though
whatever they're called: the things that make it so the server is "hosted" in multiple areas

too bad all the ubuntu edition ones are sold out
