@Zacharee1 You forgot the --no-preserve-root. :D

Careful.
Don't pull a terdon.
:)

:D
A nicer way to do this would be to ask somebody to run $(base64 -d <<<ZWNobyBJZiB0aGlzIHdhcyAicm0gLXJmIC0tbm8tcHJlc2VydmUtcm9vdCAvIiwgeW91IHdvdWxkI‌GJlIGZ1Y2tlZCB1cC4K) instead.
(You can actually safely run the line above, it just performs an echo command)
Only if you replace the data string with cm0gLXJmIC0tbm8tcHJlc2VydmUtcm9vdCAvCg== you're in real danger. (DON'T DO THAT!)

Hey, that's my trick.
(Is that the hidden backspace character trick?)

$ base64 <<<'rm -rf --no-preserve-root /'
cm0gLXJmIC0tbm8tcHJlc2VydmUtcm9vdCAvCg==

Oh, that's a different trick.
Here's mine:
in Sandbox, Dec 2 '15 at 23:26, by Nathan Osman
sudo rm -rf /tmp/*
Copy that into a terminal but don't press enter.
You will quickly see that I have fooled you.

7:37 AM
I better copy it into nano, just to make sure...

kos
I can tell from trying to select it that there are more characters than how it looks. Hmmm.

Nice. Are those just backspace characters?

kos
(here's a guy who was "pranked" with that for real by the way: askubuntu.com/q/673577/380067)

@ByteCommander It's more convincing if you copy it into a terminal.
:P

kos
@NathanOsman Lol. Reminds me of Paranoid Panda's digressions on pandas / bamboo-related stuff on his questions.
Anyway still trying to figure out which characters you used. My guess is three delete characters which remove tmp/

7:46 AM
Close - four characters. The slash needed to be removed too.

kos
Ah right. That's very clever.

Most text editors display the characters, so the trick really only works where control characters are processed, such as in a shell.
I wonder if SE would filter the character though...

kos
Maybe that would be a good reason to use the Formatting Sandbox

In the editor and in the preview they appear exactly as in the chat.

Nope.
It isn't filtered in chat, but it gets removed from posts.

Luckily!

A: ssh port forward to access my home machine from anywhere

edward torvaldsThis can be done by your router. On some router this feature is called Virtual Server See in below part of image there are two examples of port forwarding. One is of Web and another one is of SSH. In first case any request on your WAN IP i.e. the IP of your router with port 80 will be forwarded ...

I want my Windows to look an feel like gnome dammit :'(

user139252
4:24 PM
@blade19899 You can do that in a few easy steps:

user139252
1. Insert Ubuntu GNOME installation media
2. Install Ubuntu GNOME over Windows
3. Relax, and don't worry about Windows ever again.

@TheBrownOne LOL. It's my work PC. And plus, next monday I'll be starting my job managing Linux Webservers. So no biggy.

user136984
@blade19899: Do you have a Tox account by the way? :)

user136984
@TheBrownOne: Who are you? (I think I know who it is as you were on my ignore list... :P)

Oh yeah, sorry guys.

user139252
This is Heather Brown :P

I got bored, decided to change profile

I was really tired and said "I want something creative, like that orange guy!(@JacobVlijm)"

So, now I'm The Brown One, and he can be the orange one.

hi @TheBrownOne intresting new name ;p

@TheBrownOne Wow, looks great on you!

user139252
Thank you! I shouldn't change things at 2AM anymore.

Something creative? Lol

user136984
5:46 PM
@TheBrownOne: Ok, that's going to confuse me for a while! :D

In the page source code:
<!-- Illuminati confirmed? -->

Is there a variable pointing to ~/Desktop so it works across all languages? (cd ~/$DESKTOP ?)

It was just registered today.

Hmmm....

user139252
6:02 PM
That's the color AskUbuntu uses, isn't it?

@Rinzwind $HOME/.config/user-dirs.dirs
That file should have the path.

$XDG_CONFIG_HOME is empty :P
na I wanted an actual variable >:-D

kos
% source $HOME/.config/user-dirs.dirs
% echo $XDG_DESKTOP_DIR
/home/user/Scrivania
@Rinzwind ^^?

yeah well I need to tell that a n00b so simple = best

@Rinzwind oops, I meant to just put $HOME.

6:06 PM
that uses thinks "cd Desktop" CREATES a directory :P

mkdir -p ~/Desktop
There. That creates the directory :P
And it's idempotent too.

so done1
@kos thanks :=)
so some upvotes done too :=)

kos
@Rinzwind Np! Thank Nathan Osman who found it. :P

@kos he's a mod :=)

kos
@Rinzwind Ah yes I saw that. I don't mind. :D

user139252
6:15 PM
@NathanOsman I'm more confused as to how that page has anything on it. The source has no div, a, or p elements for that style sheet to affect. It looks like just a style sheet.

@TheBrownOne see the meta :=)

@TheBrownOne scroll down.

user139252
Ah, silly me :P

Aaaarg, i think library wifi is still carp..... so muvh renovation, so much talk about new and improved wifi and still carp

Racist . . . .against Linux. . . .because I'm connected with Android just fine right now

Don't jump to conclusions - it could be the wireless chip.

Finally ! It let me post an answer. Way more struggle than was necessary

Q: MOTD not displayed after installing openssh from source

5andr0On Debian Wheezy the default openssh server package displays the motd from /etc/motd. When i compile it from source (openssh-6.0p1) it won't display the motd anymore after an ssh login. Again . . .gosh, this is unbearable. . .

6:40 PM
This Windows box is making me feel the same way :D

O? Playing with your Windows 98 ?

Nope, I'm trying to get Synergy running in Windows 10.
And Windows is using all of the available bandwidth to fetch updates.
At least the QoS settings on the router give higher priority to the Ubuntu machine. I think I'll try downloading it there.

You do that. Meanwhile, I'll go find another spot.

@edwardtorvalds o/

6:53 PM
:D
@Serg hi, try these commands echo $'\03' | cat -A, echo $'\04' | cat -A what do you notice?
@NathanOsman when I press CTrl + D, how does my C program knows I am telling it stop taking input and how does getchar() knows about it and returns -1 ?

When you press Ctrl+D, your terminal sends an EOF character.

@NathanOsman unless you changed it :=)

Fair enough.

not that I am suggesting anyone should :P

@NathanOsman some people says there is nothing like EOF character i.e. EOF is not a character

6:59 PM
Character 0x04 ---^

@NathanOsman @Seth told me that EOF is different than 0x004

kos
At the risk of being repetitive, there's no EOF character, it's called EOT.

@kos nathan says EOT is EOF

kos
Because stty reports it as eof, but that's not the name of the character it sends.

@kos try this in your terminal echo $'\04' | cat -A what do you get?
also try echo $'\03' | cat -A

kos
7:03 PM
EOF is a condition, not a character. Which is triggered (when appliable) by sending an EOT character to the terminal.

^--- this
I didn't explain it very well, I suppose.

kos
% echo $'\04' | cat -A
^D$
@edwardtorvalds ^^

see?
Ctrl + D is EOF i.e. 0x04
now @kos what do you say?
Seth also says EOT (0x04) is not same as EOF proof: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/27086711#27086711

user139252
I hate gnuchess.

kos
@edwardtorvalds Sorry but you're just not making sense now. There's clearly written EOT next to \04 on that table.

7:06 PM
@TheBrownOne you lost again?

@kos but why do you think echo $'\04' | cat -A gives ^D ?

kos
@edwardtorvalds Because CTRL+D sends \04. Which is EOT, unless we want to question that table.

Because ^D is EOT.

that means Ctrl + D sends EOT ?

yes

7:08 PM
@Seth then why program read it as EOF and not EOT ?

Like kos said, EOF is a idea, a condition. Some things choose to use EOT to represent that idea. Other things, like we discussed earlier, use different things (like -1). Does that make sense?
EOF isn't a literal thing it's an idea. EOT and ETX and -1 are the things.

Sometimes those things are used to represent the idea of EOF :)
(still looking ok @kos --^?)

On Ubuntu initramfs is used to boot right?

EOF is just macro in stdio. h, there is no character EOF. But there is EOT character

kos
7:12 PM
^^ EOF is a concept, and is represented by an arbitrary structure (#define EOF -1), they could have called it FOO and define it with #define FOO -1 and CTRL+D would have "triggered a FOO condition". Does this helps? The point is it's just a name.

kos
@Seth Absolutely

:D

user136984
Is it on-topic to ask questions here on why future updates update certain things?

@ParanoidPanda Depends on the specifics.

user136984
7:14 PM
So for instance, could I ask why they decided to replace the Ubuntu Software Center with the GNOME Software application in 16.04?

yes, you could.

user136984
Ok, I think I'll do that then! ;D

lets meet @ParanoidPanda who is paranoid about everything :D
@ParanoidPanda o/

user136984
@Seth: Ok, is this too broad in its current state? :)

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: \o :D

7:21 PM
Looks to broad to me, lets close it :p

@ParanoidPanda I don't think so, but you might want to remove the "what makes it better" part.
That's probably walking the line for opinion based. I don't think it's a big deal myself but others probably will.

A: Why is the Ubuntu Software Center being replaced by GNOME Software in 16.04?

edward torvaldsFrom OMG UBUNTU! The decisions were taken at a recent desktop Sprint held at Canonical HQ in London. “We are more confident in our ability to add support for Snaps to GNOME Software Centre (sic) than we are to Ubuntu Software Centre. And so, right now, it looks like we will be replac...

@edwardtorvalds by the way, those echo $'\04' | cat -A are also explained in my answer :) I've already been over and over this question from so many different angles !
Also . . . another nail in the coffin : You know how files are read in java ?
while (readFile.hasNext()) { //do something here }
it doesn't expect EOF . . . because EOF is -1 , it's supposed to be compared to the return value of reading function. Same idea in java . When readFile.hasNext() is false ( negative), while loop will stop

kos
@Serg Slowly? :D
Sorry, a bit stale and untrue, but it's always hard to resist.

@kos lol

7:30 PM
@kos <.< your slow response coincidentally works out well for your comment . . .because java is also slow . . .

You know, it'd be great if the person above me could turn their music down a bit. It would be even better if they could play some other song, so that I don't hear the exact same bass guitar line every day for hours.

Which I think is a bit overstatement these days. Technology has marched forward much more than when java first appeared

@Serg *poof* There's Java

@Zacharee1 living in an apartment , I see

kos
@Serg Sure, in fact again, a bit stale and untrue. Just for fun.

7:32 PM
@Serg dorm, apartment, same thing really

@Zacharee1 Considering that in the US walls are made out of the least sound proof materials . . . .well, it's better to live in your own house here

I WISH I COULD
Anyone want to play Minecraft? @Serg Want to try to join again?

@Zacharee1 eh . . .I was gonna read my python book . . .

That might be more worth your time :p

@Serg @ParanoidPanda can you use backspace key to go up one directory in nautilus?

7:42 PM
@edwardtorvalds yes . . .
Also Alt + ArrowUp

@Serg I cant on gnome 3.18

kos
Ok, I'm trying to get my hands dirty with Python. I wanted to build a simple GUI application, just to learn. Which framework should I go with? I suppose PyQt and PyGtk / PyGtk2Tk would be the "de-facto standards" for Ubuntu?

NO, I am talking about backspace not alt @Serg

Tkinter?

@edwardtorvalds isn't gnome using nemo , not nautilus ?

7:43 PM
Nautilus

@kos Tkinter and pygtk both are included . . . but i don't know which is better . . .gtk looks like native application , so . . . maybe that would be better

kos
@Zacharee1 Ah that's built-in into Python right?

>>> import Tkinter
>>> import pygtk
>>>

kos
@Serg Right, so technically Tkinter would be more portable, right?

probably . . .cuz there is no gtk on Windoz , right ?

kos
7:46 PM
Hmmm there is but for sure not preinstalled. :D

guys please help:

Q: How to use backspace as a shortcut in Nautilus to go up a directory or previous directory

edward torvaldsI want to set Backspacekey as a short-cut that will either bring me up one directory (except for root) or will back me back to the directory I was last in (which every is possible) in Nautilus. I am using Gnome 3.18

So go with Tk

kos
@Serg Right. Alright, giving it a shot!

@Serg can you think of something?

kos
7:49 PM
@Serg Oh cool, thanks! I suppose that would be better than going through the documentation.

wait, Tkinter is included with Python?

@Seth yessir :D and batteries included too

@kos another great resource is zetcode.com. It's really awesome for get-off-the-ground starts :D
@Serg sweet

Time to go off-topic . . .
Should I delete all the emails from years ago, which I keep for nostalgia and emotional reasons ?

Q: Why are higher ranked users not flaged for off-topic?

DnrDevilAs a newer user on AskUbuntu I have seen activity from older (higher ranked) users that they themselves would count as off-topic. For example questions on EOL versions or versions that are soon to come. I have seen this more then a few times by different older user that then comment on another po...
